When Harry returned to Gryffindor
Tower he told his friends what had
happened. Draco had no idea what was
wrong, and the blond was so worried he couldn’t sleep. He kept waiting for someone to come and tell
him how his godfather was doing.
During breakfast the next morning, Remus, Lucius, and James
marched into the Great Hall and up to the Staff Table. Everyone noticed James’ condition and started
whispering amongst themselves.
James stood front and center and let out a shrill whistle to
get everyone’s attention. When the room
was quiet he spoke. “It is my duty to
inform you that Professor Snape fell ill last night. He’s going to be spending a few days in the
hospital, but is expected to make a full recovery. I’m sure by now you’ve all realized why I didn’t
return this year, but given the current circumstances, Fourth years and below
will have Professor Lupin for DADA, and the rest of you will have me. Mr. Malfoy here is going to assist me. If anyone wants to send anything to Professor
Snape drop it off at his office. Thank
you.”
The table was lengthened to make room for two extra seats
and the three new teachers sat down. As
soon as they finished eating, Harry, Draco, Ron, and Hermione approached the
adults. “Is Uncle Sev okay?” Draco
blurted out.
James and Lucius ushered the kids to another room which
Harry recognized as the one he’d been sent to when he was chosen as a
Tri-Wizard Tournament Champion. “Severus
is fine,” James assured them after he closed the door behind him.
“What’s wrong with him?” Harry asked. “He just doubled over last night.”
James sat down on one of the chairs in front of the
fireplace and sighed. “I suppose we
might as well tell you. He was trying to
develop a male pregnancy potion and ended up testing it on himself. What you saw last night, Harry was the
beginning of a painful miscarriage. Dumbledore
paid us a visit in the middle of the night last night and told us they were
trying to save the baby. I can’t tell
you any more than that.”
Draco frowned. “I
want to go see him.”
“Maybe after dinner,” James answered. “Right now, you need to go to class.”
“I can’t!” Draco protested.
“I’m too worried. I won’t be able
to concentrate!”
“Try,” Lucius ordered.
“I’m sorry Draco, but we can’t let you miss class. Severus will be fine. Worst case scenario he loses the baby.”
“All right,” Draco nodded.
He didn’t like it, but hopefully he’d be able to visit his godfather
after dinner.
Severus lay in his hospital bed gazing out the window. Lyssandra had stayed up all night working on
his hormone supplement, and had finished in time for breakfast. Part of what made it so difficult was that
the strength had to be adjusted to fit what would be a normal level for him in
that stage of pregnancy. She had done it
though, and brought it to him with the instruction to take one dose every
twelve hours.
Lyssandra and the other Healers who had worked tirelessly
throughout the night were now fairly confident that Severus and the baby would
be all right. Severus wished he could be
as confident.
When lunch time came around he expected a nurse to bring him
his meal and try to get him to eat even though he wasn’t hungry. What he didn’t expect was to see Sirius Black
walk through the door, and he didn’t look happy.
“I can’t believe you used me,” Sirius growled as he set down
the tray.
Severus frowned.
Apparently Dumbledore had a big mouth.
“Why do you say I used you?”
“You lured me into bed under false pretenses. You should’ve just told me all you wanted was
to try out your potion.”
Severus clenched his jaw.
“If you’ll recall Black, you were the one who brought up the subject.”
Sirius blushed lightly and sat down. Come to think of it, it had been his
idea. “So then, what did happen, and why
didn’t you tell me?”
Severus sighed and sat up a little. “Not that you’ll believe me, but it was an
accident. When you brought out the tea I
was paying more attention to you than I was to what I was doing. I picked up the spoon I was using to stir the
potion and used it to stir my tea. I
didn’t realize what I had done until after you left. And I didn’t tell you because of what
happened last night. This pregnancy is
going to be dangerous and unpredictable.
I didn’t want to tell you, then a week later have to tell you I miscarried.”
Sirius sat back and listened. He was still hurt, but in a strange way the
man’s logic made sense. “You still
should’ve told me,” he grumbled. “I’m
not a child, I can handle it.”
Severus nodded. “I’m
sorry,” he apologized in a defeated tone.
“I should have realized… I… Can you forgive me?”
Sirius was quiet for a moment. “I think I can, provided you don’t try to
keep anything else from me.”
Severus smiled softly.
“I really am sorry. As the father
you do have the right to be involved if you wish.”
“I do wish to be,” Sirius said as he moved to sit on the
edge of the bed. “It may sound a little
corny and old fashioned, but I’d also like it if we could try to have some sort
of relationship.”
“Are you saying you wish to court me Black?” Severus asked
with a raised eyebrow.
“In a manner of speaking, yes,” Sirius nodded. “I think we owe it to our baby. We can start with a lunch date.”
“All right then,” Severus said as he reached for a
sandwich. Suddenly he felt a whole lot
better about things, and though he’d never admit it, he was glad Dumbledore had
a big mouth.
James was thankful that he had Lucius to help him, and that
Remus was taking years four and below.
The three classes he was teaching exhausted him. He used to have more energy than he knew what
to do with, but now he could barely get through the day.
The sixth years were the most frustrating. They were still working on silent casting,
and no one had been able to do it yet.
James was very disappointed in Harry.
He’d spent most of the summer working with his son.
“Have you forgotten everything
I taught you?” he snapped one morning while Harry was trying to hex Ron.
Harry frowned, but started thinking back to his summer
lessons. “What’s the first step?” James
asked.
Harry closed his eyes and took a few deep calming
breaths. He blocked out the rest of the
room and started meditating like he’d been taught. When he opened his eyes he felt more relaxed
and centered. He aimed his wand at Ron,
and with a quick flick and an incantation spoken silently in his mind, Ron
suddenly flew up in the air and hung upside down. Harry was so shocked it had worked that his
concentration broke Ron fell with a soft thud.
“Very good,” James grinned.
“Now all you have to do is remember how you did that and do it again.”
Harry swelled with pride.
It was amazing how easy it was when he didn’t have someone yelling at
him.
At the end of the class Neville’s only accomplishment was
hexing himself. “Mr. Longbottom,” James
sighed, “I’d like to see you after dinner.”
Neville swallowed hard, expecting to be yelled at and thrown
out of class. The opposite turned out to
be true. James wanted to give him
private lessons. His first instruction
was for Neville to forget everything his grandmother had ever said to him.
Severus returned at the end of the week, but Lyssandra
wanted him to take things slowly at first.
It was decided he would take back the first and second year classes and
they would see how that went. Remus took
over fifth year classes to take some of the strain off James. They weren’t sure what they would do after
the full moon, but they’d figure something out when the time came.
Severus found that since he had started taking the hormone
supplement potion the cramping he’d been experiencing was gone and had been
replaced with typical symptoms. His
nausea was severe at first, but calmed down eventually.
Sirius moved into the castle, and Severus was thankful for
his support. Sirius assisted him like
Lucius assisted James; doing things like getting him drinks and snacks,
and helping to grade papers when Severus
didn’t feel up to it.
Dumbledore debated on whether or not to continue to allow
Hogsmede visits. In the end he decided
to allow them, as he thought the visits were good for the students He decided to step up security in the
village as well for the visits.
The first visit was set for mid-October. James woke up that morning and peered out the
window. It was going to be a cold and
rainy day. He groaned and pulled the
curtains closed. “I think I’d rather
just go back to bed.”
Lucius chuckled and started making the bed. “I couldn’t agree more, but I have to
go. Dumbledore wants as many adults as
he can get to keep the students safe.
I’d like you to come.”
James went over to the closet to pick out his robes. “Getting out of the castle wouldn’t be a bad
idea, but I’m not walking in this weather.”
“Of course not,” Lucius agreed. “I certainly don’t want you getting
sick. I like you too much.”
“Oh, so you only like me?” James raised an eyebrow.
Lucius pulled James close and kissed him tenderly. “You know better than that, brat.”
James wrapped up in his warmest cloak and they arranged for
a carriage to take them down to Hogsmede.
They wandered around and did a little shopping before heading to the
Three Broomsticks. The day turned out to
be pretty uneventful.
Most of the students didn’t stay long because of the awful
weather, so when James became tired they climbed back in the carriage to go
back to the castle. About halfway back
they came across a bunch of students surrounding a screaming girl.
They stopped the carriage and got out to investigate. The bundled up students turned out to be
Harry, Draco, Ron, and Hermione. The
other girl was the friend of the girl in trouble.
The screaming girl was Katie Bell. Lucius scooped her up and put her into the
carriage to rush her back to the castle.
James stayed behind to find out what had happened. It turned out Katie had touched a necklace
that was in a package she was carrying back to the castle.
According to her friend Leanne, Katie was acting strangely
and somehow came to have the package, which she said she was supposed to
deliver to someone. Katie had never said
who it was meant for.
James carefully wrapped up the necklace in his scarf and
carried it back. It was obviously
cursed, and he would need to study it.
They would probably never know who had sent it, or who it was meant for,
but it definitely meant they needed to be more careful.
