“Severus, I’m not sure how much longer I can hold the man without hexing him to Africa.”
“You mean you haven’t already?” Snape asked in a bored tone, not bothering to look up from his potions journal.
Draco and Hermione were curled in the floor by their Master’s legs, heads in his lap enjoying their last bit of contact before they needed to leave for school. Dawn was in an hour’s time and they couldn’t stay any longer. Their absence had been noted, despite the lack of news in the Prophet, and Lucius was now spitting mad and demanding to know where his son had run off to.
“As much as I would like to, no,” McGonagall huffed and finally stepped through the floo rather than kneeling in front of it. “I’ve got just about five minutes before he storms the gate again. I thought you said the glamour could hold until the end of the year.”
Snape sighed and set the journal down. “In a normal person, it would. However, you must remember that Lucius is a talented occlumens.”
“Not to mention that he’s looking over marriage contracts,” Draco said sourly. “They’ll jog his mind past any foreboding that might have been there.”
“Quite,” Snape said. “Though I’m not sure exactly who he’ll make the contract with.”
“Parkinson,” Draco huffed. “Because the Greengrasses are now unworthy and there really isn’t anyone else who is willing to risk their very limited power on a Malfoy.”
“And after you change your standing?” McGonagall asked curiously.
Draco gave her a wicked grin. “I’ll have a dozen half-blood babies to raise with my self-made billions. I don’t give a shit who wants to be the next Mrs. Malfoy.”
“Who exactly is going to have this brood?” Hermione asked curtly.
“Who else?” he asked, waggling his eyebrows.
“I’ll not be raising a muggle football team,” she snapped.
“How do you feel about a quidditch team?” Draco purred and ducked when she swung at him.
“Enough,” Snape ordered causing them to both fall silent. “We’ll need to deal with Lucius now.”
Hermione swallowed and buried her head in Snape’s lap. “I’m not ready.”
Snape carded his hand through her wild mane. “Your new wand works beautifully, pet. I believe you to be even more efficient than you were with the old one, and more powerful as well. It is Lucius who isn’t ready for you.”
“I don’t want to duel,” Hermione said softly. “I’ve had enough bloodshed.”
“Yet you’ll march into some unknown place to hunt basilisks and wrestle dragons during nesting season,” McGonagall huffed.
“They aren’t human,” Hermione said quietly. “It will be a while before I’ll be ready to face another human. But creatures and plants, those I can do.”
“Could have fooled me,” McGonagall said with a small twinkle in her eye. “I saw the way you went after Skeeter when she was interviewing you on the grounds. And that was no timid kitten that charged after Lucius the last time he came to collect.”
Draco chuckled. “I thought you were going to eat him alive. It was hot.”
Hermione shivered and allowed him to pull her into a heated kiss. She wasn’t sure why she felt like she was touching lightening every time they kissed, but she wasn’t about to knock it. Before they could get much father, Snape pulled them apart. They looked up to see indigo flickering in the black depths. He wanted to join, but they’d run out of time.
“Come. You need to face your obstacles to move on. And it’s high time you stepped out of the shadows.”
Draco frowned. “We weren’t in the shadows. Not really.”
“So you’ve pushed her against a wall and snogged her senseless in front of your peers?” Snape asked, his voice dipping low.
“N-no,” Draco stuttered, trying to get control of his raging libido. “But we make it no secret that we’re friendly.”
“Friendly,” McGonagall huffed. “Is that what they’re calling it these days?”
Draco rolled his eyes. “Would you prefer I rip her skirt off and take her in the middle of the Great Hall for everyone to see?”
McGonagall’s eyes narrowed. “Severus.”
Snape snapped his fingers and Draco hissed in pain as swift punishment was administered for his cheek. Hermione was glad she’d kept her mouth shut. The punishment was quick and fleeting but Draco wouldn’t soon forget to mind his words around their Headmistress. She’d make sure their Master would punish them for every infraction. It was almost like being a first year again.
“Better,” McGonagall said when Draco was panting and bowing his head in submission. “Now, when can I expect you?”
“Five minutes,” Snape drawled. “After all, isn’t that when you’re expecting a break in?”
McGonagall nodded and made the floo call back to Hogwarts. “A minute later and I might actually hex him, Severus. And I do so look forward to the graduation ceremony this year.”
Snape chuckled as the flames died out. “That old coot is rubbing off on her.”
Draco huffed and stood on shaky limbs. “Not enough.”
Snape stood and kissed Draco roughly, his hands working down to caress the oversensitive mark for a few moments before he pulled away. “Watch your tongue around the woman and that won’t happen.”
Hermione stifled a snicker and earned a sharp shot of pain for her trouble. Draco smirked and stuck his tongue out at her distressed hiss and earned himself another shot of pain as well. Both teens sniffed and bowed their heads, cowed by their Master. Hermione almost laughed again. It was like a very thin slice of the heavy weight that was pressing down on her since the war had been cut away. She hadn’t been childish and petty in a lighthearted way in a very long time. It felt nice.
“I’ll give you a choice of your entrance,” Snape said after he allowed a soft fleeing smile for both of them. “Each with their own merits. You’ll need to weigh their benefits and consequences and you only have four minutes to decide.”
“Well, let’s hear them,” Draco said.
Snape nodded. “The first is the way we always enter, cloaked and in Minerva’s office. The second is to go straight to your rooms as if you never left. The third is to walk through the front door.”
“The first is out,” Hermione said quietly. “Lucius has no clue that the cloaked vampire he saw with two teens in McGonagall’s office was us. I’m confident that he doesn’t quite remember how his last visit ended but if we were to enter that way, it might jog his memory. Even if we were cloaked and never showed our faces, he’d probably figure it out.”
“Agreed,” Draco said. “And number two is also out. Lucius is ultimately more dangerous when no one is there to see him. He’s a deranged madman, but he still cares about his reputation. Besides, if we’re in our rooms, he’ll try to invoke the Malfoy name and I’d like to avoid that.”
“It won’t work,” Snape growled.
Draco nodded. “I know, but I don’t want him to know. At least, not until we’re soundly on our feet business-wise. He might damage what is left of my reputation and, well, with the vote so soon, I couldn’t repair it before then.”
“So number three,” Hermione said. “We just come waltzing into the Great Hall?”
Snape scoffed. “Of course not. You’ll come back weak and injured, which will explain your absence for the past week.”
“And what story will we have the bug tell?” Draco asked with a knowing smile.
“Why, the corruption in the Ministry of course. What other reason would a prominent war hero and the reformed Death Eater that is now pressing for dragon regulations be attacked? And after the Greengrasses made threats to you, no one could possibly want to vote against the bill.”
Draco and Hermione’s jaws dropped, agog at the true brilliance of their Master.
“You are a true Slytherin,” Hermione breathed, dropping to her knees in awe.
Draco knelt beside her. “I… how can I repay you?”
Snape smirked. “We’ll think of something… after the legislation passes and you’re free.”
“And have a multi-billion dollar exclusive contract,” Hermione murmured, reaching out to try and show her gratitude.
“Ah, ah, ah,” Snape chided, lightly batting her hand away. “We have no more time. Cloaks on.”
