No One Comes When You Cry
Chapter 49 Thingy?
“Albus I really would prefer that she not meet with Lupin this close to the full moon.”
“Come now Severus, do you not think you are being just a tad over protective? I shall be with her when she meets with Remus, and you know as well as I do that he would not harm a hair on her head.”
“I know nothing of the sort Albus.” Severus sat in bed with his arms folded and a scowl on his face.
“Do I see the green eyed monster raising it’s ugly head Severus?” Albus’ eyes twinkled as he looked at Severus. Even knowing his Potions Master was about to blatantly deny his jealousy, Albus knew it was so.
“Do not talk stupid Albus, I am merely concerned for the safety of my wife.” ‘Of course he was jealous, she was his wife for goodness sake. She should not be meeting other wizards without him present, no matter the reason.’
“I promise to keep a close eye on her my boy.” Albus patted the Potions Master on the leg as he stood. “I believe you wife has returned, I shall leave you two alone.”
“Hello Albus, not leaving because of me are you?”
“No my dear, though I do believe Severus would prefer to have you to himself. He is recovering nicely. You have done an extraordinary thing for him Sky, it must have taken an awful lot of thought and hard work to do what you did. I would like to hear about it sometime.”
“Thanks Albus, but I wont be talking about it, ever. I’m sorry.”
“Do not be sorry Sky. Everyone has a right to privacy, but should you change your mind …”
“I wont.”
Fair enough. I shall leave you to talk with Severus.” Albus leaned to whisper in her ear. “He is a little sulky at the moment, I do hope you have something good to tell him.”
Sky kept quiet as she opened the door to the Headmaster’s office. As soon as it was closed she walked through to the bedroom.
“Hello. Do you want a cup of tea?”
“No I do not, now sit here” Severus patted the bed beside him. “and tell me what Poppy had to say.”
Sky sat down and averted her eyes, studying the floor as she wondered how to tell him.
“Something’s wrong, I can tell. What is it? What did she tell you?”
“Erm well, at first she said the baby would be due at the end of January.”
“And …?”
“Well she examined me, then she examined me again, then a third time.”
“Shit.” He moaned quietly as he sat himself up straighter and took hold of her hands. “Tell me Sky. If something is wrong, I want to know.”
“It’s not wrong exactly Severus, but it wont be January either.”
“Oh? When will it be then?”
“Poppy said it might be nearer the end of November.”
“But that’s impossible, you could not have got pregnant in time.”
“I know, it must have happened the first time we ..you know.”
“Sky, you are not making any sense.”
Sky let her words out in a rush. “Poppy said they’re going to come early. She said it’s quite normal.”
Severus let out a sigh of relief. “That’s alright then. THEY?” He suddenly shouted, his eyes widening.
“Yeah. They.”
“Bloody hell. Twins.” Severus was so glad he was already in bed. His heart drummed and his head literally swam at the thought of two babies. “B …but you can’t have two. Is she certain?”
“Don’t panic Severus, I’m not having two.” Sky told him as innocently as she could.
“He put a hand to his heart. “Do not say things you do not mean wife. You nearly gave me a heart attack.”
“Three.”
“W …what?”
“Three. Were having three. I think she called them triplets. Poppy said it’s quite unusu …Severus? Severus?” She shook his shoulder but he wouldn’t wake up.
Once again the Potions Master had fainted.
When he did come round he started giggling like a girl.
At least that was what it sounded like to Sky. “What are you giggling at?”
Severus wiped the tears from his eyes as he tried to speak between his chuckles. “I had the weirdest dream.” he told her. “I dreamt you told me we were having triplets. How ludicrous is that?“ He fell back on the pillows again in fits of laughter.
Sky didn’t find it the least bit funny. She was the one who had to carry them around as she got bigger and bigger, and she was the one who had to give birth to them.
She stood up and glared at him, her hands on her hips. “I don’t find it in the least bit funny Severus, and just to spoil your fun, it wasn’t a dream.”
Severus suddenly stopped laughing and looked at her seriously. “What do you mean it wasn’t a dream. Of course it was a dream. I should know, I was the one drea …”
“IT WAS NOT A DREAM. Get that through your head Severus. We’re having triplets. Ask Poppy if you don’t believe me.”
When Severus woke again, he was in his own bed in his own bedroom at Hogwarts. He opened his eyes to see Albus and Poppy standing over him.
“What is it? Has something happened? Why are you both here?”
“We are here Severus, because your wife asked us to come and find out why you keep fainting. She tells me you have done so twice in the last half hour. Now why do you think that is?”
“I do not faint Poppy, my wife is mistaken.”
“Really Severus? Then how do explain her placing you in here without your knowledge?”
“I must have fallen asleep Albus. Where is my wife anyway? I need to speak with her.”
“I would not advise that at the moment, she is not too pleased with you and left to …what did she say Albus?”
“Sky is playing ’blast a tree’ I believe she said. Apparently it was the trees or you Severus.”
The Potions Master gulped. He’d fucked up big time, and making Sky this angry was not a good idea.
“How was I supposed to know she was being serious. I mean bloody hell Albus, triplets. Who do you know that has triplets? And stop doing that damned twinkling thing with your eyes.”
“Severus Snape.” His head spun round to a very stern looking Poppy. “Just because you don’t know of anyone who has triplets, and just because it is extremely rare in the wizarding world, does not mean it never happens, you and Sky are both testament to that. Now you really have upset Sky and I think it would be a good idea if you tried to think of a way to console her. I for one would not like to be in your shoes if she hasn’t calmed down when she returns.”
“I quite agree Poppy.” Albus stood and turned back to Severus. “Triplets. My-my. How wonderful.”
Severus sat in his bed and sulked as the Headmaster and the Medi-witched left.
He muttered every curse word he think off under his breath as he wondered how to ensure that Sky would go easy on him while still trying to get his head around the fact that he was going to be a father three times over. All in one go.
He waited until the feeling of nausea passed and threw back the covers. He could not just lay here and wait for her to come back and hex him into oblivion.
Running his fingers through his hair, Severus let out a long groan. “Why me?” He cried. His voice several octaves higher then normal. “Why me?”
Heaving his legs over the side of the bed, he tried to push himself up. Nothing happened so he tried again. After the third failed attempt he shuffled himself to the end of the bed and tried using the bedpost to pull himself up. His arms had more ‘oomph’ then his legs and he managed to pull hard enough to get into a standing position. Unfortunately, his body swung round as he stood and his legs refused to support his weight.
When Sky walked in she found him dangling naked from the bedpost for all he was worth.
“Having fun?”
“Ha. Ha. Just pass me my bloody wand so I can use it to get back on the damned bed.”
“Effy.” Sky called. “Why didn’t you just shout for her yourself? How long have you been hanging on the bedpost like that?” She demanded as the elf levitated him back onto the bed.
Severus felt humiliated. He was not going to tell her he’d been like that for almost fifteen minutes, nor was he about to let her know that it did not occur to him to call the elf for assistance. His bloody arms ached and he was still unsure what kind of a mood she was in.
“Only for a moment. You walked in just as I …”
“Your sweating, it must have been a long moment.” She told him.
“Thanks Effy.” Sky told the elf once Severus was back in bed. “Can we have a pot of tea please.”
“Yes miss.” Effy was only gone for a minute and returned with the tea tray before popping out.
“You still think it’s funny then?”
“What?” He peered sideways at her as he drank his tea.
“You know what Severus. Did Poppy explain it to you in a language you could understand.”
Severus did not like her sarcastic tone and glared at her. “I do not like your attitude. Do not speak to me in such a manner, and I did not need Poppy or anyone else to explain anything to me. Your revelation was a shock, nothing more.”
“Severus. I’ve had more shocks in the last three years then I know how to deal with. I didn’t faint or giggle when they happened.”
“I told you I did not faint, nor do I giggle. I really don’t understand how this could have happened.”
“Well I can always get Poppy to come down and explain things, like she did with me.”
“Stop being facetious. I only meant that it is very rare to have triplets in the wizarding world. How do you feel about having three babies at once?”
“I don’t know, I’m still trying to get used to having one. What about you?”
“Still in shock I think. Do you know what they are?”
“Pardon?”
“Are they all boys? Or is there a mix?”
“Oh, all boys Poppy said.”
“Three sons.” Severus said on awe. “Three sons in one go. Are they identical?”
“What? What are you talking about?”
“With twins, they can be fraternal or paternal. Either they look the same, all sharing the same …thingy what they have in there, or they can have separate …thingy’s. Where’s Poppy? Get her down here so I can ask her.”
Sky didn’t know what he was talking about, but she opened the door and walked into the infirmary.
“Hello Sky, back again.”
“Yeah, Severus wants to know about thingy’s and I don’t know what to tell him.”
“Thingy’s. What are thingy’s?”
Sky shrugged her shoulders. “He just keeps saying thingy’s. I don’t know.”
“Severus, what on earth is all this nonsense abut thingy’s?”
“Poppy I do not wish to know about thingy’s. I merely asked if the children will be identical or not.”
“Oh I see. Well if you are asking if they share the same placenta, then yes they do. So what’s a thingy?”
Sky snorted and took Poppy to one side. I think the thingy is the placenta Poppy, we just didn’t know what it was called.”
“Thingy indeed.” Poppy muttered as she stepped back into the infirmary.
“So, thingy’s aside, now you know.”
“Would you please shut up about thingy’s.” He growled.
“Well you brought them up in the first place Severus. Anyway, how’s your arm?”
“My arm is fine thank you. It is just a shame that we won’t know whether or not he will be trying to summon me.”
“He already has. That’s why I asked Effy to bring you in here. The second time you fai …slept, I was angry and wanted something to take it out on. So I decided to torment him in the mirror. I got another wand from him by the way, anyway, he was ranting about you and me and he pressed his wand against the arm of some little tubby bald man. He kept saying your name so I guessed he was trying to get through to you, but when Effy brought you in here and nothing happened I took his wand from him again. He went loopy, he doesn‘t look very well either.”
“Really, what did you do with the wand?”
“I left it outside. It’s keeping that bouncing tree happy, there’s two of them now.”
“Two whomping willows? You changed the wand into a whomping willow?” He asked incredulously.
“If that’s what you call it, yeah. It’s quietened the first one down a lot, I don’t think it’s ever met another one before and Professor Sprout’s over the moon.”
Severus brought his hands up to his face and moaned. “Dear Gods, does this mean we shall be overrun with baby whompers now?”
“Shut up you.” She sniggered and punched his arm gently. “It’ll be dinner time soon and Albus is taking me to number twelve this afternoon. Do you want anything getting before we leave?”
“Yes.” he growled as he grabbed her and pulled her on top of him. “A pair of legs that work, you told me that my legs would not be affected and I am fed up of being stuck in bed. It would not be so bad if you were with me though.”
Sky wriggled away slightly and pulled something from her pocket. “Here, try this. It wont get you on your feet yet but it’ll help. I was wrong about your legs and I‘m sorry, but it should wear off soon.”
“It had better. Why have you given me strengthening potion?”
“Try it.”
Severus did and felt an immediate difference. “You know, I feel strong enough to …”
“Oh no you don‘t, let it do it‘s job. If you take another tonight, you might be able to walk a bit tomorrow.”
“I want to be able to do more then walk.”
Sky winked at him and wriggled of the bed.
After dinner she told him she was going to Albus’ office and then onto number twelve.
“And what am I supposed to do while you are gone?”
Sky smiled, went into the study and to her desk. She came back holding a large scroll. “I thought you might like to have a look at this, and I’ve left you my wireless on the bedside too, just in case you want some music.”
She gave him a big hug and walked through the door to Albus’ office.
When Severus opened the scroll to see what was inside he whooped. It was a new drawing. Her best yet and it showed the two of them laid side by side, playing with themselves. Needless to say, he managed to keep himself fairly well occupied while she was gone.
“You have the potion?”
“Yeah, it’s in my pocket.”
“Severus tells me it is of your own making, also that it differs from his considerably.”
“Yup, tastes better too.” Sky grinned at the Headmaster. “Shall we go?”
“Albus, Sky, I’m glad you could make it. Molly has tea ready in the kitchen.”
Sky and Albus followed Remus along the still dingy corridor of number 12 to the kitchen.
“Why is it so dark in here?”
“Loud noises and bright lights tend to disturb Mrs Black, hence the heavy drapes on her portrait. Ah Molly, wonderful. I was hoping you would have the kettle on.”
“There’s chocolate cake too Albus. Sky how are you my love. You’re looking a little peaky, are you eating enough?”
“Yes Mrs Weasley, thank you for asking.”
“Call me Molly dear, everyone else does. Here you are.”
“Molly passed her a cup of tea and a plate with a large slab of cake on it.
“Thanks.” It was the first time Sky ever had cake or chocolate, when she bit into it she let out a loud “Mmm.” It was lovely and didn’t take her long to polish off.
“Molly promptly placed another slab in front of her. “Here you are dear. your eating for two remember.”
Sky felt her cheeks burn, she knew she’d turned red.
Remus noticed too and could not keep the slight smirk from his face. “Is there something your not telling us Sky? Like maybe your eating for more then two.”
She looked down and nodded.
“Twins.” Squealed Molly. “Oh how wonderful, just like me with Fred and George.”
“Erm no, it’s not twins Molly.” Sky told her in a small voice.
“But I thought you said that …”
“Calm down Molly, or perhaps you should sit.” Albus said.
Molly did and Remus leaned forward in his seat to listen.
“Sky is expecting triplets. Three identical boys I believe.”
“Oh my word.” Mrs Weasley exclaimed.
Remus almost choked on his chocolate cake. “Are you sure?”
Sky and Albus laughed at his question. “Erm yes, we’re sure, Poppy told me this morning. That’s why I’m so fat.”
“You are not fat dear.“ Molly told her. “Tell me, how did Severus take the news?”
Sky looked at Albus and he answered for her. “Lying down, like any man.”
Remus went into fits. “I’ll bet he did. Lying down eh, you mean he fainted Albus?”
“Twice apparently.”
Molly scowled at Remus. “I don’t know why you find it so funny. Can you honestly say you wouldn’t do the same?”
“No, I suppose not, but you have to admit Molly. The thought of Severus fainting is something that goes beyond the imagination.”
“If you’ve finished laughing at my husband Mr Lupin, I happen to have your wolfsbane in my pocket. What flavour did you say you preferred? Poop wasn’t it?”
Just because she’d got mad at Severus for fainting at the news of the babies, didn’t give other people the right to laugh at him. Albus shouldn’t have told them what happened.
Sky removed her wand and flicked it first at Remus, then at Molly. Finally she flicked it at Albus. ’There. Now none of you know.’ She thought smugly as she quickly tucked her wand away.
“He was a bit surprised.” She told Remus when the blank expression left his face. “But so was I when I found out.”
“So, what flavour?”
“Pardon?” Remus gave her a bewildered look.
“Your wolfsbane. What do you want it to taste of and have you got any with you?”
She removed the phial from her pocket and held out her hand. A glass appeared in the palm of her hand and she poured the wolfsbane into the glass. “It’s up to you, but it’ll taste horrible on it’s own.”
“Oh. Oh yes. Here, I’ve got some chocolate in my pocket. How much do you need?”
“Just a teaspoon, melted.”
“Remus stood and got himself a teaspoon, placed a square of chocolate on it and used his wand to melt it. “Now what?”
“Stir it in and drink it.”
“Remus stirred the chocolate into the glass of potion and lifted it to the light, studying it. “It doesn’t look like the potion Severus normally gives me.”
“That’s because it isn’t. Just drink it Remus, I want to observe you.”
“You want to what? Why?”
“Just drink it Remus.” Albus told him.
So Remus did. “Hey, that was nice, I mean really nice. I won’t mind taking that every month.”
“Three months.”
“Pardon?”
“Every three months. That’s how often you take it.”
“Sky, I am sorry but lycanthropy occurs every full moon. Not once every three months.”
“Yeah I know it does, but that doesn’t mean you have to take the potion every month. Four times a year. I’ve got the other three bottles with me. Just keep them somewhere dark and not too warm, they’ll be fine.”
Sky went on to explain how it was best to take the potion three days before the full moon for maximum effect. When she told him he wouldn’t go through the usual transformation he was doubtful, but she’d not lied to him about the taste, so he was willing to wait before he passed judgement.
