Ch 49 The Burrow
“Lou you daft bat, shut up. Your coming for the holidays, you’ll staying at the Burrow until it’s time to come back here.”
Her mouth opened and closed a few times in disbelief, then she let out a loud guffaw and slapped her hand over her mouth. “I get to stay? Like Hermione, and Harry?”
He nodded, smiling at her all the time.
“Oh wow. Oh but Ron, I’m supposed to be going somewhere with the Headmaster on Thursday and I can’t back out of it, it’s too important. What am I going to do?”
“It will not be a problem Miss Black, I shall collect you from the Burrow, and return you there when our business is finished.”
Lou spun round. “Headmaster, you’d do that, for me? So I can go then, to the Burrow I mean?”
“I insist on it. You will have the opportunity to be part of a loving family Miss Black, something I believe has been sadly lacking in your life so far. Tell Mrs Weasley I shall be there after lunch on Thursday to collect you. Have a nice Christmas you two.”
Once the Headmaster had gone, Ron looked at Lou when she let out another snort. He thought at first she was laughing, then he saw the tears in her eyes and realised she was crying. He took her to one side and sat them both on the floor in a small alcove, holding her to him.
“Lou what’s wrong? Don’t you want to come?”
All she could do was nod. Of course she wanted to come, it was just a shock to discover that someone actually wanted her. Especially at Christmas.
Ron let her cry herself out before asking her again. “Lou, if you really don’t want to come home with us, no ones gonna make you.”
“I do want to Ron, more than anything the world. It was just a shock, I didn’t expect to…I thought I’d be staying here on my own.”
After supper, she knocked on the Potion Masters door and was admitted to his rooms.
“What is so urgent that you deem it necessary to interrupt one of my few free evenings Miss Black?”
He sounded displeased, but he looked at her kindly and Lou knew he wasn’t really mad at her for disturbing him.
“I wanted to tell you, Mrs Weasley invited me to spend Christmas with her family. I wanted to make sure it was okay with you.”
“And why should it not be? I was informed a while ago of her plans, I see no problem with them. As regards you and Mr Weasley however, I expect you both to curtail your activities while under the Weasley’s roof. I do not wish to hear that you two have been alone at any time during your stay there, is that understood?”
“Yes Sir, I promise. I’ll be on my best behaviour all the time I’m there. I don’t want Mrs Weasley to get annoyed and send me away.” She told him earnestly.
Lou intended to be as unobtrusive as she could at Ron’s house and help Mrs Weasley in the kitchen. That way they wouldn’t want to send her back early.
Monday morning Lou was up, showered and dressed at six am. She’d hardly slept with excitement. Her bag was packed, reduced and in her pocket. Professor Snape had allowed her to have her broomstick to take to the Burrow on condition she be careful. Now she had nothing to do but wait until it was time for breakfast.
Validus hooted and flew to sit on the bed next to her. He proudly sent her an image of the owlets taking their first flight, how he and Hedwig had watched nervously until they landed safely back in the nest, then again as they got the hang of it and flew with ease.
“Oh Validus, that’s wonderful. I’m really happy for you and Hedwig. Your babies are lovely, do they have names?”
The owl didn’t know how to tell her their names, instead he hooted loudly as he bobbed up and down.
“I take it you’ll want to stay in the owlery over Christmas then? I don’t mind. Here.” She told him, placing a small bag in his beak. “It’s spelled to enlarge and open on Christmas morning. So no pecking at it before then. There’s something in there for you, Hedwig and the babies. Happy Christmas Validus.” Lou told her owl. She opened the door into the dungeon corridor and let him out.
In the early hours, she’d managed to lower the wards on the door that connected her rooms to the Potion Masters living room, deposited a Christmas cake she’d made herself on his desk, then replaced the wards.
At ten o’clock, she was standing at the main doors with Ron and the others, eagerly awaiting the carriages that would take them to Hogsmead train station.
“Miss Black, a word if I may.” Said and ominous voice behind her.
Lou turned to see Severus’ glittering black eyes boring into her. She’d hoped to get away before he discovered the cake and realised she’d been in his rooms.
Lou followed him to the other side of the hall. “Sir?”
“How did you gain entry to my rooms?” He growled. “More to the point, I did not give you permission to do so.”
“I know, I’m sorry. I just wanted to surprise you.”
“How many times have you been in my quarters without my permission?” He demanded.
“That was the only time, honest. I’ll never do it again.”
“I should hope not. Thank you for the cake, I shall enjoy it. Have a good Christmas Lou.” He said, giving her a brief smile and walking away.
Lou breathed a sigh of relief. She was convinced he was about to tell her she couldn’t go to the Burrow as punishment.
Smiling she ran down the steps to where Ron was holding the carriage door open, panic written on his face.
“Blimey Lou, what was that about? He looked livid.”
“It’s okay Ron, he just wanted to make sure I behaved at your house. A last minute warning.” She told him, grinning.
To Lou, it seemed as though the Hogwarts express took forever to get to Kings Cross and she could barely sit still for more than five minutes at a time during the whole journey.
When they were about halfway, Lou removed a tiny basket from her bag and placed it on the seat beside her. “I brought lunch, loads of it, s I hope you’re all hungry.” She told them, enlarging the basket and pulling out a never ending array of food she’d made herself.
When the food trolley finally arrived, Lou felt guilty because no one bought anything. They were all too full.
Mrs Weasley was waiting for them at the station. Lou hung back a ways, watching as the cheerful woman hugged Ron and Ginny, then Harry and Hermione. When Ron grabbed her hand and pulled she resisted, not wanting to intrude. Then Mrs Weasley gave her a hug like she’d given the others. “Louhi Black, you’re one of us now, so you’ll get treat the same as the rest of them. I’m glad you came.”
“Come on you lot, lets get going.”
They all followed her through the barrier onto the muggle part of the station and out onto the street. There was a single black car waiting for them. Whet everyone started climbing in, Lou whispered to Hermione. “We’ll never fit in there, not all of us.”
“You’ll be surprised what we can do Lou, come on, I want to get there and put my things away.”
To Lou’s amazement, the car seemed to stretch inside and there was room for them all to sit down without being squashed.
“How?” She asked.
“Magic.” Harry told her with a big grin. “You aint seen nothing yet.”
When Lou first caught sight of the Burrow, she thought she was imagining things. It looked like someone had added storey’s to it willy nilly, and she had no idea how it managed to stay up. “Wow!” She exclaimed.
Ron watched her nervously, afraid she would say something to belittle his modest home.
“It’s fantastic. Oh I love it.” Lou said to no one in particular as she walked across the yard. “You have chickens. Oh and pigs, what‘s their names?” She said excitedly.
“There just called pigs Lou.” Ginny told her, wondering what Lou was making a fuss about.
Lou wanted to take in everything at once, she’d never been to the countryside before and had certainly never seen live chickens or pigs. Only the ones on tv.
Ron and Harry eventually had to drag her away from the pigsty to the house.
“You think outsides cool, wait until you go inside.” Harry told her. “I was speechless first time I came here, I still find something new to amaze me every time I visit.”
Harry was right, Lou stood inside the door looking round in total amazement. She didn’t hear Harry and Ron laughing at the look on her face as she stared in wonderment at things that shouldn’t have been possible.
“Is all this real? I mean how?” She asked.
“Course it’s real.” Ron told her.
“Don’t ask how Lou, just accept.” Harry told her.
“I love it.” She said, in complete awe of the place.
Ron let out a sigh of relief. “Mum, where’s everyone sleeping?” He shouted across the room.
“That depends. Lou, can you manage the stairs? If you cant, I have a small room down here you can use, not much more than storage really but it’s big enough for a bed if you want it.”
“I don’t mind where I sleep Mrs Weasley, honest, I can manage stairs now though.”
“That’s settled then. The girls can have the twins room since it‘s bigger than Ginny‘s, I’ll put an extra bed in there. The twins can have Ginny’s room Ron and Harry, you’ll be in Ron’s room. Bill and Fleur will keep their own room.”
Lou was still trying to process what the woman said when Ginny grabbed her and hauled her over to the staircase laughing.
“You get used to it Lou.”
“How many brothers have you got Ginny?”
“Six, then there’s Harry, Hermione and you of course, oh and Fleur, Bill’s wife.”
“That’s a lot. Will we all fit?”
“Yeah, we always do.”
The room was a bit cramped with three beds, but the girls giggled a lot as they climbed over each other to get at their things and put them away.
When the shout of “Dinner” hollered round the house, there was a scramble of bodies and the thundering of feet as six people tried to run down the staircase at the same time.
Lou waited till they were all out of the way before following. There were two face in the kitchen she’d never seen before, obviously the twins, and Mr Weasley who she’d met at number 12.
“Louhi, I’m so glad you came, welcome to the Weasley household.” Arthur told her.
“Thank you Mr Weasley. It’s nice of you to ask me.” She told him shyly. The twins were looking at her and she didn’t know if they’d take to her or not.
“Lowhee. What kind of a name’s that? I’m Gedge, and this is Frorg.” One of them said with a cheeky smile.
Lou couldn’t help grinning back, especially after the play on their names. “It’s Lou, not Lowhee. Anyway, Ginny warned me about you two.”
There followed good humoured complaints to their sister, who soon put the boys in their places as everyone sat at the table.
Lou was placed between Ron and one of the twins. She didn’t know which one it was, they were so much alike it was impossible to tell.
They kept her entertained though with their antics, she almost knocked Ron off his seat at one point when she was laughing so hard she fell against him.
It didn’t take her long to work out that if she didn’t dive in and grab the food while it was there, no one was going to offer it. She was told to tuck in and that was it. Lou did so happily.
Once everyone left the table, Lou set about helping Mrs Weasley clear up.
“Oh no you don’t my girl. You get yourself off with the others and have some fun. You’re a guest, guests do not help with the washing up.”
“Please Mrs Weasley, I want to, and the cooking, I want to help with that too. I bet you don’t get any time off.”
“Well no, I don’t, but that is beside the point.”
“No it isn’t. You’ve been good enough to invite me here, at least let me do something to show you how grateful I am. Anyway, you know I enjoy cooking.” Please.” She asked in a whiney voice.
Molly stood with her hands on her hips, studying the younger girl. “Does anyone ever win an argument with you?”
Lou grinned widely. “Sometimes.”
“Tell you what, for the next two days, you hang out and have fun with the others, then, and only then, I’ll give you the run of the kitchen for half a day. How does that sound?”
“A full day, every other day.”
Molly opened her mouth to protest and Lou jumped in with. “Christmas day we share the load.”
“Your on.” Molly told her without further argument.
Lou ran into the garden to find the others.
“On Wednesday it was Lou’s turn in the kitchen, she was up early to light the stove and start preparing the breakfasts. She only remembered last night to tell Molly about the headmaster coming to collect her tomorrow. Lou also liked the fact she got to call Mrs Weasley, Molly.
Before calling everyone down, Lou prepared a large tray and took it upstairs to Molly and Arthur’s room. After knocking on the door and getting a reply, she opened the door, averted her eyes and floated the tray to the bed carefully. Then she hurried back down, banging on everyone’s door as she went.
Using a mix of muggle and magic, Lou soon had them all fed and the table cleared.
Molly was overjoyed that she and her husband were served breakfast in bed, she was even more pleased when she came down to a clean kitchen.
“I could get used to this Lou, you’re spoiling me.”
“Good, then we’re even. We did okay together at number 12, so why not here?”
Lou had a couple of hours before she needed to start lunch and she went to find Ron and the others. When she saw them all in the distance on their brooms, she accio’d her own and flew off to join them, racing and dodging each other.
When she saw Hermione sat on the grass watching on her own, Lou landed and sat beside her. “You can use mine if you like.” She told her friend.
“No thanks, flying is not my thing. I rather watch.”
“Really? I love it. The first time I tried, I was stuck upside down for an hour while the broom went crazy, I loved it though.”
Hermione looked at her for a second then started laughing. “You are joking?”
“No.” Lou said, laughing with her. “I looked like a mad woman but I didn’t care, at least not until I started to feel sick. My leg kept me off balance all the time, that’s why I had so much trouble controlling it.”
“You didn’t fall of?”
“No, its got a sticking charm. Go on, try it, I have to go and start dinner anyway.” Lou told her how the sticking charm worked, told her the speed and height limiter spell, then left her to give it a try.
Molly was made to guiltily sit with her feet up while Lou made lunch. She let Molly shout them in, then made her sit in the armchair again, giving her a tray on her lap.
Hermione came in looking as windswept as the others, as well as looking rather pleased with herself after completing several laps of the field on Lou’s broom. “I don’t know why all brooms don’t have the same spells as that, it would make flying much safer.” She said.
Lou told her to take it for another spin after lunch while she cleared up in here.
Ron complained because he wanted Lou to come outside with them. Molly complained she felt guilty not doing anything.
“”Too bad.” Lou told them. It’s my turn in here and I’m not shifting, so there.”
Molly left to clean the bedrooms as the others went back to the field and Lou finally had the kitchen to herself.
She’d borrowed one of Mollies aprons to protect her clothes, plus a scarf to keep her hair out of the way and was happily chopping vegetables muggle style ready for the evening meal when she was grabbed from behind, lifted off her feet and held tightly against a hard chest while the owner of said chest kissed the top of her head.
She screamed blue murder and was promptly dropped on her backside.
“Bloody hell! Who are you?” Charlie asked looking down at a young woman who was definitely not his mum.
Instead of answering, Lou scrambled back on her bum until her back hit the cupboards. She stared terrified at the tall man in front of her, wondering who he was and what he was doing here.
“Charlie, your home. Lou? What is going on here?” Asked Molly when she saw the terrified girl on the floor and Charlie looking bemused.
“I thought she was you mum, she had her back to me so I grabbed her. She screamed and nearly burst my damned eardrum.”
Molly rushed to the shaking girl and put her arms around her. “It’s alright Lou, it’s Charlie, my son. He made a mistake that’s all. He’s always crept up on me like that, there’s no need to be afraid.
Molly, under oath, had been given a brief recap of what happened to Lou at school, so she knew why she’d acted the way she did.
Charlie however, thought the girl was a complete nutcase and scowled at her. “Who is she? And why is she wearing your clothes?”
“Charlie Weasley, first of all you say sorry to Lou, then you learn to show a bit of respect. Lou’s our guest and she’s helping me by doing the cooking today, at her own insistence I might add. That is why she’s wearing my apron. Why don’t you go put your things away.”
“No Molly please. I was stupid to react like that, really. Mr ..Mr Charlie, I’m sorry. You just gave me a fright.” She told him.
Charlie had to laugh at what she called him. “Fair enough, I suppose it was a bit of a shock. I’m sorry too.” He told her, offering his hand.
Lou took his hand and shook it.
“Ah, muggleborn like our Hermione.”
“For your information Charlie, Lou isn’t a muggleborn, not that it makes any difference.”
“I know that mum, but not many purebloods know to shake hands.” “You half and half then?”
“No Sir, I’m just what I am, no more, no less.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” He asked, laughing again.
Lou turned away to carry on with the veg while molly sat Charlie at the table and told him Lou’s full name.
He let out a long, low whistle. “Wow, so Sirius was your dad? So who’s your mum?” He asked Lou.
“Her name was Orvokki.” Lou told him.
“Was? You mean …? I see, I’m sorry Lou, I didn’t realise.”
“It’s alright, I never knew them anyway. Molly is it alright if I go see the others for a bit?”
Molly knew Lou wanted a bit of time on her own and let her go. Then she turned on Charlie.
“You have no idea what that poor girls been through Charlie, try to show a bit more sensitivity. Poor Harry’s background is like a bunch of roses compared to hers, and she’s got worse to come, so go easy on her. If you want to know any more, you’ll have to wait for the next Order meeting at new year. Her mothers name was Nilsen by the way, in case you’re wondering.”
“Fair enough, but why is she here?”
“Same reason as Harry, she’s also Ron’s girlfriend so keep off her. I saw you looking when she left the room Charlie Weasley.”
“Your joking. Our ickle Ronikins has got himself a stunner? How did he manage that?”
“By being gentle and considerate that’s how.” Molly told him.
She loved her sons, but she knew them well and Charlie was a ladies man through and through. He liked to charm them and move on to the next one before the woman had chance to get attached to him.
Lou hid herself in the garden for a while. ’Lou Black, that man probably thinks you’re a head case. Why did I scream like that? Because I was scared that’s why. Please don’t let it always be like this.’ She thought. Lou headed back to the house, she couldn’t hide out here all day and the dinner still needed seeing to.
