Sansa: Dumbledore’s casket was charmed so that if he was unable to break or open it, it would break to release Mulésko dud. (She told him so when she gave it to him. Lol)
Chapter 49
“Severus he does not blame you, I know this. You did what you must, there was no other way.”
Severus barely heard Paula words of comfort as he paced the short distance afforded him near her fire, but they meant nothing to him.
She stepped forward and placed a hand on his arm.
The look of self-loathing she saw in his eyes almost caused her heart to break.
“What about Him? Has he hurt you?”
“Of course not, I am his golden boy. I have murdered one of his two biggest adversaries for him.” Severus spat the words hatefully.
“Must you return to him?”
“Yes and soon. He thinks I am testing the waters around Hogsmead.”
“Folk there are much the same as elsewhere. They are baying for your blood.”
“You think I don’t know that.” He spat, though his face softened as he looked at her. “It is best we don’t meet again, things are … complicated and will only get worse. The Ministry is falling under the Dark Lords might and soon he will have control of all wizarding England. Hogwarts included. He intends to establish me there as Headmaster and it would be best if you were gone before then. I can only continue if I know you are safe Paula.”
“I will stay hidden if that is what you want, but remember I am close, and keep me in here Severus.” Paula pressed her palm against his heart. “You still have the Mulésko dud?”
“Yes.” Severus searched her eyes for a moment or two. “I must go.”
“Wait.” She cried as he turned away. “Mook man choom teero gudlo mui.”
He turned and looked at her again, a puzzled frown on his brow.
“Let me kiss those sweet lips of thine.” She said softly.
Unable to resist, Severus pulled her into his embrace and pressed his lips to hers. He kissed her with all the depth and feeling he felt was left to him, he inhaled her, tasted her, ingrained her into his psyche, then abruptly pulled away and apparated.
He had been so lost in the kiss he did not even realise that Paula in turn, was inhaling a small part of him.
Paula and Riley did not go far away, though Severus did not know this. Instead they hid in the mountains, in a secluded valley near to where she had taken the small team of students to train. Her black box now contained two tiny ivory caskets. In the valley she was invisible to all, but close enough that she could keep abreast on what was happening.
Under disillusionment, she and Riley would ride the back streets of Hogsmead, Riley’s hooves heavily padded with moss and tied to his feet with burlap and string. Riley hated the feel of it but put up with it for Paula’s sake.
Occasionally she would keep watch on Harry, making sure he was alive and well. She wanted desperately to reveal herself at times, to let him know she was there, who she was, and assist the trio in their search for the horcrux’s, but Severus already had that covered and she thought it best not to interfere. In fact Kak had warned her not to, though she found it hard not to do so.
Still she kept a close watch whenever she could and when the Weasley boy deserted them for a time; she went to the Burrow and spoke to him.
“You took an oath to protect all Mr Weasley, yet you abandon your friend when he is at his lowest. The girl too, she misses you. They need you, both of them.”
Ron antagonised for another two days before deciding his Professor was right. He returned just in time to pull Harry from the icy pool and retrieve the Sword of Gryffindor.
“You don’t like to make things easy do you Severus?” Paula asked as they made their way from the scene.
“It is not my place to coddle them Paula, they have the sword and the horcrux is destroyed, my duty for the moment is done. What are you doing here anyway? I told you to go.”
“I will never be too far away from you Severus, someone has to protect your soul.”
“My soul is fine as it is, you should leave; get far away from this place.”
“I cannot, I too have a responsibilities. How goes it?”
“Terrible. I never wanted the position of Headmaster and the Dark Lord has seen fit to install the Carrows to keep an eye on things. On me. That stupid Longbottom seems to have rallied some group together and they are making my life a living hell.”
“Leave them be Severus. They are doing what they believe is best, they have all trained hard and will fight when the time comes.”
“Paula I cannot be seen to allow them to continue, not with the Carrows always within earshot or round the next corner. The staff are making things as difficult as they can for me, it is near impossible to get their cooperation in the slightest when it comes to disobedient students or the running of the school. They all hate me, I can see it in their eyes even when my back is turned. Not that I can blame them.”
“Sako peskero charo dikhel.
Everybody sees only his own dish Severus. Let it be seen that you intend to punish, but do not be so harsh with them.”
Severus scowled at her. “You forget Paula, I enjoy punishing them. I am a Dark wizard after all.” He said sarcastically.
“May kali i muri may gugli avela.
The darker the berry the sweeter it is Severus. Here is not dark.” She told him, her hand over his heart. “Here beats a heart of sorrow and pain, of guilt and remorse, shame and little hope for the future, a heart desperate to burst forth into the light but afraid to do so for fear that it will be swallowed by darkness. Set it free.”
Before he could reply with some scathing remark, Paula dissaperated.
“Bloody stupid woman with her bloody stupid sayings.” He muttered before wrapping his cloak around himself and apparating to Malfoy Mansion.
“Mr Moody, they plan to launch an attack on Harry when he leaves for Hogwarts after the holidays.”
“And how exactly did you come by this piece of information Miss Vance?”
“It’s Paula and it doesn’t matter how, I came only to warn you.”
“I still want to know who told you, unless of course you’ve taken over spying from that murdering scumbag Snape.”
“I have met your Dark Lord, it is unlikely he would ever allow me to infiltrate his ranks and listen in on his plans; I am merely passing on the message. That is what I am expected to do I assume, as a member of the order.”
Moody was about to say more but Kingsley Shacklebolt interrupted him.
“Yes Paula that is the kind of information we need and we thank you for it. However, you have to understand, turning up here with sensitive information like that is bound to raise questions. It is not that we do not trust you, but we do need some kind of confirmation that what you have said is true. That someone has not intentionally deceived you. Who is your informant Paula?”
“Let’s just say it is someone who cares more than you realise. Someone who is as much a pawn in this war as Harry. I can tell you no more.”
“Can’t or won’t?” Moody asked gruffly.
“Won’t Mr Moody. It would serve no purpose for you to know. You have the facts, that is enough.”
“Not for me it isn’t lass.”
“I opened your eye for you Mr Moody, pity I cannot do the same for your mind. Na may kharunde kai chi khal tut Mr Moody.”
“Oh Paula what have you done?”
“I have not cursed him Mrs Weasley if that’s what you’re thinking. Ah, it is what you think, so truly there is no trust for me here.”
“Of course there is Paula, we are all a little on edge after … well you know.”
“I know Professor MacGonagall, for me to lose kak, was to lose a father. What I told Mr Moody was ‘not to scratch what does not itch.’ All is not as it seems Professor. I must go now, please take care of Harry.”
“Where are you staying anyway. No one has seen you since… “
“I am close enough to the school and Hogsmead that I can keep abreast of what is happening. At the moment there is not much I can do to help.”
Professor MacGonagall studied the young woman for a moment. “Actually there is. Paula, might we talk in private at some time?”
“Riley spends most of his evenings at your stables, tell him when you have some free time and I will meet you.”
Paula turned and exited the kitchen of number 12 and was out the front door before anyone had chance to question her further.
