LEECH
Chapter 49
Because it was late Sunday morning, quite a lot of students were milling about the halls and they all watched curiously when Hagrid burst into the school with Professor Snape’s unconscious ‘friend?’ in his arms as he ploughed through them and made for the staircases.
Among them were Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger.
“Get Dumbledore an Professor Snape.” He told the trio as he passed them.
“Harry, find Professor Dumbledore straight away and tell him what we saw, I’ll find Professor Snape.” Hermione grabbed Ron’s arm, expecting him to accompany her.
“I’ll go with Harry, you find Snape.” Ron suggested.
She rolled her eyes and fled to the dungeons, too impatient to argue with him.
Severus was just starting to feel human again. It had taken two phials of hangover cure and a strong stomach potion to get him to the stage where he could think clearly.
Now he cursed himself for getting into such a state the night before and it took him several minutes to remember why he’d gotten so drunk. When he did remember he cursed himself for a fool. A fool for allowing Kathy to get under his skin. A fool for allowing himself to let her into his psyche, his heart. A fool for caring who the hell she cavorted with.
He did not remember her returning last night, the concern for his welfare, or the cruel, biting remarks he’d shot at her.
The sudden pounding on his office door startled him and he schooled his face into an angry glare as he moved behind his desk, pulled a stack of parchments and a quill to hand and called “Come in.”
Hermione opened the door to see her Professor glaring at her and gulped. “Erm Professor, I thought you might want to know. Hagrid just ran into the castle with err I don’t… “
“For heavens sake Granger, either say what you have to say or get out and stop wasting my time.” He bellowed.
“The lady who… the one from the ball, the one who sits with you at mealtimes. I… I think she’s hurt. Or something.”
“Out!” He roared, jumping to his feet and pushing her from the room before slamming the door and stalking passed her.
“That’s alright Professor, anytime.” Hermione said to the empty corridor. “Rude man.” She muttered as she made her way back to find Harry and Ron.
“Harry and Ron were reciting every confection they could think off trying to get the gargoyle to move aside and let them onto the staircase that led to the Headmasters office. But to no avail.
Harry kicked the stone gargoyle in frustration, then swore at the pain in his toes.
“Ah Harry, Ronald, looking for me?” Albus asked when the gargoyle moved aside to let the Headmaster exit the stairs.
“Harry looked up with a pained expression. “Yeah, Hagrid just came in with that woman, I don’t know her name, but he was carrying her and seemed in an awful hurry.” Harry told him.
“Looked real sick she did, unconscious and everything.” Ron put in dramatically. “He was shouting for Madam Pomfrey all the way up the stairs.”
“He told us to come and get you.” Harry added, still grimacing with the pain in his foot.
“Thank you gentlemen. Harry, perhaps you should accompany me and get that foot seen to.”
Harry didn’t think his foot was broken or anything, but this might be a chance to find something out about the mystery woman. Giving Ron a wink, he followed the Headmaster.
“Hey, don’t you need me to… err… help you Harry, that foot looks painful.” Ron called after him.
“I’ll manage thanks Ron.” Harry called back, grinning at his friend.
Ron and Hermione were both in bad moods when they met up in the main hall. Ron complaining about Harry not letting him in on the act, and Hermione stating what an ignorant ungrateful man Professor Snape was.
Madam Pomfrey was at her wits end. Her wand wouldn’t work when she tried to cast a diagnostic spell over the unconscious woman. She tried two other wands and neither of them would give her a reading. Hagrid wasn’t helping as he prattled on about magic not working on the woman. What a ridiculous notion.
“What on earth is going on?” She demanded when Severus barged into the hospital wing and stalked over to the bed.
“Severus, do you mind. I am having enough difficulty trying to analyse what is wrong with her without you stomping in here and Hagrid twittering about magic not working on her for some reason. Though I have to admit that none of my wands are having an effect.”
“They won’t Poppy, tell me what you want me to do and I’ll do it.”
Severus Snape, I have tried three wands, and if they won’t work, what makes you think yours will?”
“Do as he says Poppy. Only Severus can use magic on her. I will explain later, but whatever you do, don’t touch her.”
Poppy’s frowned at the two wizards indignantly, but she told Severus what spells to cast and was surprised when the readings appeared from the end of his wand to hover over the prone woman on the bed.
Harry stood slightly behind the Headmaster, trying to see what was happening, yet not wanting to be noticed.
“Well according to my… your readings, there is nothing wrong with her that a good long sleep and a pepper-Up potion will not cure. She is suffering from extreme exhaustion. What on earth happened to her?” Poppy asked, turning to Hagrid.
“She come ter look at the unicorn like you suggested Professor.” Hagrid said, turning to Albus. “She were doin alright until she drained it, then she got all sick like and grabbed the old elder tree. It… well it died and crumbled. Then she went back ter the unicorn, did that… thing again an the unicorn went on it’s merry way. Ony poor Kathy ere was unconscious on the ground. So I brought ‘er straight ere.”
Harry listened wide eyed. He couldn’t wait to tell Hermione and Ron about this. Hermione would go straight to the library, he knew that. They might get to know what this was all about.
“Are you saying she Leeched a blasted unicorn?” Severus turned to Hagrid, a nasty look on his face.
“At my suggestion Severus. Professor Binns and I thought it would be an ideal opportunity for her to try out the other aspect of her talent.”
“Well she’s done that all right. Look at the state of her.” Severus snarled back. “What was wrong with the blasted unicorn that it left her in this state?”
“Dunno Professor.” Hagrid admitted. “I ony know it was real sick an woulda died soon of she hadn’t done what she did.”
Harry, who’d limped over to one of the beds sat taking the shoe and sock off his injured foot and pretending to be preoccupied with it, whilst really he was trying to make sense of what the adults were saying. ‘Leeched a unicorn? What the hell was that all about? And she killed a tree?’
“Poppy seemed to suddenly notice Harry and raised an eyebrow at Albus.
Severus’ face became darker, if that was possible, when he followed the medi-witches gaze to where Harry sat, trying to look ignorant of what was going on around him.
“What is he doing here?” Severus demanded.
“Mr Potter had a… slight accident with his foot. Since I was on my way up here, I thought he may as well accompany me.” Albus told him calmly.
Severus threw the old wizard a scowl and stalked from the infirmary. Kathy was in no danger so there was no reason for him to linger.
Poppy came to examine Harry’s foot, pleased that her wand at least worked again. She spoke a healing spell over the bruised toes, then gave him a pot of suave to apply if it became painful before sending him on his way.
For the two days and one night that Kathy spent sleeping in the infirmary, Hermione was getting more and more frustrated. The only articles she could find on Leeches were in the Herbology section, and all they spoke about were the fresh and salt water type of leeches. She found one chapter on a rare Albanian river leech that grew up to four feet long and was capable of draining enough blood from a human in one feed to kill that person. There was absolutely nothing on Leeching unicorns or trees, or about witches that could change into leeches. She’d also checked the Transfiguration and Potions sections with no luck.
Severus hated the total silence that seemed to encompass the dungeons once classes were over. He missed Kathy’s presence, no matter how hard he tried to pretend otherwise. Her chatter and questions, the ever ready pot of tea, her companionship. He entered her rooms and located the drawer where she kept her gloves. He used these as an excuse to return to the hospital wing on Sunday evening, but Kathy was still sleeping. He gave Poppy the gloves and suggested she wear them before having actual physical contact with the sleeping woman and left.
Hagrid had brought him small sample of the previously sick unicorns blood, saliva, and a touch of powdered horn and hoof to analyse. Severus set up a number of tests to see if he could discover the nature of the unicorns illness.
After eliminating the more obvious diseases that could effect the equine population, he would have to wait a further three weeks to a month before the more serious infections would show up.
