Harry’s next private lesson with Dumbledore was Monday
night. Dumbledore informed him that
Katie was in St. Mungo’s and doing fine.
Lucius had rushed her straight to Severus who had done emergency damage
control.
Dumbledore took Harry into another memory. This one was of the day a much younger
Dumbledore visited a young Tom Riddle at the orphanage to tell him he’d been
accepted to Hogwarts. Harry was
surprised at how queer the boy was even at a young age before he knew he was a
wizard.
When they finished it was late, but Dumbledore didn’t excuse
Harry. “I know it’s late, but I have one
more memory I’d like you to see,” the elder wizard said and swirled the
contents of his pensive again.
Harry was tired, but he leaned into the bowl again. He found himself on another crowded London
street. Dumbledore was heading toward
another orphanage. The only thing that
seemed different was that Dumbledore looked older; there was more silver in his
hair.
Harry and present- day Dumbledore followed past Dumbledore
into the plain looking building. A young
woman approached Dumbledore just inside the door. “Can I help you sir?” she asked.
“Yes, I have an appointment with Mrs. Wright.”
“One moment,” the young woman said and hurried off. Moments later an older stern looking woman
approached them. She reminded Harry of
Professor McGonagall a little.
“Mr. Dumbledore?” she raised an eyebrow at him.
Dumbledore nodded.
“As you know, I’m here to speak to you about the incident.”
“Very well,” the woman sighed and she led Dumbledore to a
tiny office and motioned for him to sit.
“I’ve already spoken to several other people about this, I don’t know
why you want to hear about it again,” she said as she sat behind her desk.
“I’m sorry to bother you, but it’s a very interesting
event,” Dumbledore said. “Please tell me
what happened to the best of your memory.”
“Well,” the woman sighed, reaching into her memory, “I
remember that James and Ronald were fighting over a xylophone. James was playing with it, but Ronald kept trying
to take it from him. I heard yelling and
went to break them up, but when I got there Ronald was gone. I asked James what had happened and he told
me Ronald was gone. At the time I
thought Ronald had just left the room, but I couldn’t find him anywhere. I can’t tell you how worried I was. It was like he disappeared into thin
air. He was brought back here by some
strange looking men later that night. I
don’t know where he’d been, but he had frostbite on his toes.”
“And does Ronald remember what happened?” Dumbledore asked.
The woman shook her head.
“He can’t remember a thing, but he’s terrified of James.”
Dumbledore nodded.
“I’d imagine so. Have there been
other strange events?”
The woman nodded.
“The boy has been accused of all sorts of strange things. Laura Thomas said he turned her into a
chicken and took her candy. I would’ve
completely dismissed it as an outlandish lie, but there were feathers in her
room. Joseph Collins said James hung him
upside down in the air. James didn’t deny
it, but he said he did it because Joseph tried to hit him.”
Dumbledore listened quietly to the woman as she recounted
many strange stories. When she finished
Dumbledore stood. “I suppose I should
tell you that the real reason I came here today is because I want to adopt
James.”
The woman looked too surprised to speak. “You want to adopt him? Even after everything I just told you?”
Dumbledore nodded.
“Yes. I’ve thought long and hard
about it, and I think I can provide the best environment for him.”
“Well then, you’ll have to fill out some forms,” she said as
she started digging through a drawer.
“If you would be so kind as to start drawing up the
paperwork, I’d like to visit with the boy.”
The woman started to protest, but for some reason stopped. She stuck her head out the door and called
out, “Elaine!”
When a young blonde woman came in Ms. Wright told her to
take Dumbledore to see James.
Present-day Dumbledore turned to Harry. “I think you’ve seen enough.” He took Harry’s hand and suddenly they were
back in Dumbledore’s office. Dumbledore
sat down at his desk and gave Harry a small smile. “Do you know why I showed that to you Harry?”
Harry shook his head as he sat down.
“Do you remember in your second year when you realized that
you and Voldemort had a lot in common?”
Harry nodded. There
were a few times he’d wondered if he was going to end up being the next Dark
Lord.
“As you can see, your father has a lot in common with him as
well, but there are also differences.
Did you notice the differences in those memories?”
Harry thought hard about it.
“You adopted my dad, but not Voldemort.”
“Oh, it’s more than that.
Your father also realized he could do things at a young age and learned
to control it, but he didn’t hurt anyone.
Young Tom Riddle did horrible things.
Your father scared the other kids, but the Greenland
incident was the worst. Ronald Cooper
was quickly located by the Ministry and he was just fine.”
“Then why did you adopt my dad?”
“Very good question Harry,” Dumbledore smiled. “First of all, I have to admit I was a little
worried. Second, the Ministry was
worried. Voldemort was already starting
trouble at that time, and your father strongly reminded them of him. I promised the Minister I would take personal
interest in him.” Harry sat quietly and
let it all sink in. “Now I think it’s
time for you to go to bed,” Dumbledore said softly.
Harry nodded and headed back to Gryffindor
Tower. No one was waiting up for him this time so he
went straight to bed. He had a lot on
his mind, but he was so tired he fell asleep the moment his head hit the
pillow.
As the first Quidditch match of the year approached things
became a little more tense. Katie Bell
was the best chaser, but she hadn’t returned from St. Mungo’s yet, and it
didn’t look like she was going to in time for the match either.
Harry put off replacing her as long as he could, but a week
and a half before the match he realized he had no choice. He really didn’t want to hold another tryout
so he picked the next best person from the original tryout; Dean Thomas.
The rest of Harry’s housemates weren’t very confident about
his choices. They thought Harry chose
Ron and Ginny because he was friends with them, and Dean because he was in
Harry’s year.
Draco was very confident however. He’d been at the try outs and knew Harry had
chosen the best players. Draco also knew
his replacement as seeker on the Slytherin team was a fifth year, who in
Draco’s opinion was a good example of why pureblood inbreeding was a bad idea.
Draco tagged along to team practice. Everyone but Ron played reasonably well. Ron’s spectacular performance was not
repeated. In fact, he was back to being
as awful as he had been the previous year.
Harry and Draco knew it was just nerves, but they couldn’t convince Ron
of that.
On the way back to Gryffindor tower one evening they ran
into Ginny snogging Dean in hallway. Ron
completely lost it and broke them up.
Harry didn’t look happy either, and Draco recognized the look on his
face.
Draco decided then and there that the hanging back and
waiting approach wasn’t working. The
wheels in his mind started turning while Harry was trying to get between Ron
and Ginny.
Ron spent the next few days in a very bad mood. He acted cold and indifferent to Hermione
which confused her because she didn’t know what she’d done. Harry and Draco knew it was because during
their fight Ginny had felt the need to point out that Harry had kissed Cho, and
Hermione had probably snogged Viktor. It
had recently become obvious to everyone but Ron and Hermione that they liked
each other.
While it upset Draco to see Harry upset, he didn’t mind that
Harry was spending a lot more time alone with him because of the problem
between his two other friends. Draco quite
happily let Harry vent his frustrations to him.
By the morning of the match Harry was desperate. There was no way Ron would be able to play in
the mood he was in. Harry had a plan
though. He put his bottle of Felix
Felicis potion in his pocket before going down for breakfast and waited until
Hermione came down to make it look like he was pouring the potion into Ron’s
drink.
As predicted, Hermione tried to tell Ron that Harry had put
something in his drink, and Ron didn’t listen.
Of course he bought into it when the weather turned out perfect for the
match and he learned that one of Slytherin’s Beaters had taken a bludger to the
head the night before during practice.
Harry’s plan worked like a charm. Ron believed he was lucky, and therefore made
incredible saves. It was a very close
game, but Gryffindor won. Hermione
confronted Harry after the game, and he told her it was all a trick. Hermione became even more upset at that, but
Ron’s confidence was boosted quite a bit when he found out his improved
performance was all him and not a potion; which was how he managed to gather up
enough courage to approach Lavender Brown at the victory party and kiss
her. Of course that only made the
situation between him and Hermione worse.

patiently waiting for Harry and Draco to get together, you’re going to love me
after the next chapter if it goes as planned.
