Following the defeat of the Dark Wizard Voldemort at the hand of Harry Potter, life begins to return to normal. American Wizard Matt Santini awakens from a coma in Scotland, thousands of miles from his home in America. Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry has been destroyed and Matt’s the key to discovering who is behind the nefarious plot. Hermione Granger ends her relationship with Ron Weasley, as he attempts to force his way back into her life, while dating Padma Patil. Patil attacks Matt with her job as a writer for the Daily Prophet. Matt’s memories finally are unlocked, and the British Ministry of Magic clears his name, but Ron still holds a grudge against both Matt and Hermione as we begin the next chapter of the 7th Year Student.
The pair slammed to the ground and immediately slammed into a wall. Hermione yelped in pain and Matt gasped, as neither was able to bleed off the momentum of the transport. They looked around and found they had not moved extremely far; in fact, they were behind where they originally were. Matt’s eyes widened in shock as they were pressed against one another inside the clear box set up in the middle of the town square.
“Oh no…” Matt looked up to the thick green slime hovering above their heads. “I think we’re the Celebrity Guests…”
“No…” Hermione looked afraid as reporters and onlookers were gathering around the magical gunge tank.
“Oh, now this I’d pay for. Oh wait, I am!” Rita Skeeter said as she joined the growing group of press and villagers, even students from Hogwarts who were there began to gather. Rita was the first one to step up to the cauldron beside Matt and Hermione’s box and dropped a galleon in.
“That’s right! Don’t be shy, step up. Donate to help Muggleborns displaced by the war, and watch as, once we reach the right amount, the most famous Muggleborn and Brightest Witch of our Age gets the gunge!” a voice said and Padma Patil came out from behind the wall, followed by none other than Ron Weasley and finally, Pansy Parkinson.
“Yeah, c’mon you lot! Let’s see that gold! Help the Muggleborns! Watch Hermione get gunged!” Ron joined in, pumping up the crowd. “The Ministry of Magic, of course fully sanctions this and thanks you all for your generosity.” Ron said as more and more people were lining up and dropped galleons, sickles, and knuts into the large cauldron beside them.
“If he’s telling the truth, I’ll throw out my library.” Hermione scoffed.
“If this is legit, I’ll eat my school robes…” Matt said and held her close, which was not difficult in the cramped box.
“Ronald Weasley!” Hermione hissed, when Ron finally turned to face them and lowered his voice so the crowd could not hear him. “You let us out of here or so help me!” Hermione scowled.
“No way! You’re the star here!” Ron said with a derisive chuckle. “Besides, it’s not like you can get out of it.”
Hermione glared at him, drew her wand, and with a flick of her wrist silently cast ‘Alohomora’ at the door. There was a loud bang, and the box shook, knocking Hermione and Matt into the back wall of it, but the door remained sealed. Some large, thick droplets of the slime overhead dropped down and Hermione flinched away. Ron laughed.
“Knew you’d try that as soon as I said something.” Ron looked at them darkly. “You humiliated me, Hermione, let this dog injure me, then refused me, and snubbed my mum. After all we did for you. Then you turned Harry and my own sister against me! It’s time I got a little payback, don’t you think?”
“No, I don’t! None of that is true!” Hermione protested.
“You’ve cooked yourself up one hell of a delusion Ron. But it’s not the solution.” Matt said and sighed. “Look, if you let us out of here, we won’t say anything to anyone.” Matt kept his voice low.
“No, I don’t think so, you’re bringing in loads of galleons. This’ll be well worth it.” Ron said standing back and smiling smugly at his captives.
“Hermione, I don’t think we’re going to talk our way out of this one…” Matt said and as he looked around the box.
“I know!” Hermione said as she aimed her wand, just as a loud bang erupted from the cauldron. Matt grabbed onto her as the tank flashed lights and suddenly, the pair were engulfed in the thicky, lumpy, green slime. Hermione squealed and pulled close into Matt as the slime rained down on them. Matt’s arms wrapped around his girlfriend, and he closed his eyes, knowing there was no place to move to. He felt the thick ooze coat his head and run down the back of his shirt. Hermione moaned as the slime coated every inch of her bushy brown hair, slipping inside her pink blouse and staining her jeans.
Matt shifted a little but could not escape the flow as it ran down his shirt and pooled in the bottom of the tank, filling his own and Hermione’s trainers with gunge. Hermione shivered as the slime covered her from head to foot, not an inch of her seemed to be clean. Matt fared no better, not even the parts of him that his girlfriend pressed against, in an attempt to hide from the mess, were clean.
The shower of green goo never seemed to end, it flowed over the couple as they tried to hide from it or cover one another from the mess, but it was no use. The crowd of gathered people laughed and pointed at the famous Hermione Granger and her American boyfriend being gunged. Hermione hid her face from the crowd, her formerly bushy hair and pretty face now stained with lumps of green. She tried to hold back the tears of embarrassment but could not.
Once the flow finally stopped, Matt shook his head and wiped his eyes clear. He looked down at his shuddering and crying girlfriend and frowned. He hated what Ron had done. The jerk had managed to hurt her yet again.
“It’s ok.” Matt said in a soothing voice. He tried to tilt her chin up, but she refused to yield.
“Please…” Hermione begged. “Don’t…I’m hideous.” She moaned.
“Never.” Matt leaned down and gently kissed her. Hermione closed her eyes and leaned into the kiss. She felt horrible, sticky, wet, slimy, yet here he was trying to make her feel better about herself. It was working too. Matt did not care what state she was in; he would kiss her no matter what. She felt relieved in a way and cried new tears of appreciation.
“I love you.” Hermione said.
“I love you too.” Matt replied and the pair looked out at the crowd. “Had your fun?” Matt spat. “Enjoyed that did you, Ron? Liked tricking us into this? Did that make you feel clever, sending her a portkey?”
“What’re you on about? You both agreed!” Ron said, trying to save face to the now murmuring crowd.
“No, Ronald we didn’t!” Hermione said, now that the moment had passed, she looked angry. “Finite Incantatem!” Hermione cried and the box shook, and the door popped open.
“What’s this? You mean, you two didn’t know?” Rita asked from the front row as Matt and Hermione stepped out of the box and the other reporters and onlookers were exchanging uncomfortable glances.
“No, we didn’t! Hermione got a letter just moments before we were thrown into the tank. The letter had a portkey inside it.” Matt said. Hermione dug the small trinket out of her pocket and threw it to Rita, slime, and all.
At that moment, Cassidy came running up to the stage, Ginny, Harry, and Geroge Weasley with Angelina Johnson in tow.
“Matt, Hermione! Oh my God! What happened to you two?” Cassidy said looking shocked at the state her ex-boyfriend and his current girlfriend were in.
“Ah, well, Angelina, there would be the missing gunge tank.” Geroge said, looking incredibly annoyed.
“I told you I knew I hadn’t moved it!” Angelina Johnson said and slapped the older Weasley brother on the arm.
“Now, Ron, what in Merlin’s name are you doing here, with my gunge tank?” Geroge asked as he stepped up on stage followed by Ginny and Harry.
“Are you both alright?” Harry asked, keeping a wary distance from the couple.
“Yes, we’re uninjured, if that’s what you mean.” Hermione said, her voice was shaky. She was not about to ask why he did not rescue them; she knew he had no way of knowing they were in trouble to begin with.
“I can’t believe my so-called brother!” Ginny said and she and Harry both drew their wands.
“What do you mean, Geroge?” Ron asked, trying to sound innocent.
“What I mean is, it’s not nice to take things that aren’t yours without asking!” Geroge said and drew his own wand as Ron pulled his own out. Suddenly, Padma Patil and Pansy Parkinson were on the stage next to Ron, wands drawn.
“Now, now, that isn’t nice!” Pansy said.
“Let’s just all settle. Wouldn’t want to cause any family rifts, would we?” Padma said with an air of cruelty.
Matt raised his arm in front of Harry and Ginny. Hermione, who was next to Matt, with Geroge and Angelina to her right, did the same. Matt looked at his teacher and closest friend and shook his head. Hermione was pleading with her eyes to Geroge and Angelina to not engage.
“No…this is our fight.” Matt declared, his arm rising with his wand in hand. Hermione did the same. The couple looked at one another and nodded. There was a loud bang, and spells flew across the stage. Harry and Ginny ducked beside the gunge tank for cover. Cassidy dove off the stage as Geroge and Angelina jumped down too. The crowd of onlookers and reporters quickly cleared the area, only a few brave members of the press stayed, Rita being one, albeit ducked under a bench for cover.
Despite it being an uneven duel, Matt and Hermione had been wanting this for some time. Hatred burned in Matt’s eyes as he pressed forward on the stage, firing spells at Ron just as quickly as Ron could deflect or dodge them. Padma supported her boyfriend, and more than once Matt had to force Hermione to duck under a spell that he himself had spun out of the way. Hermione was more than happy to finally have it out with Pansy. The two had been rivals for years but this was going too far.
All the pieces finally clicked into place for Hermione, that was how Padma had been getting inside information from Hogwarts. It was Pansy. Matt had really made her angry on the train and Hermione’s rival had used school gossip and firsthand accounts to write to Padma. That was why Parkinson had been corresponding so much. She was feeding Padma half of her smear campaign information. It was time to shut her up for good.
Hermione fired off a tripping jinx at Pansy and then threw up a shield against Parkinson’s Diffindo. Apparently Parkinson was not quite as adept with non-verbal spells as Hermione was. Hermione ducked down under Matt’s arm and flicked her wand, sending Pansy flipping backwards with a yelp. There was a crunch and Parkinson rolled off the stage moaning, her wand snapped in half under body.
Ron and Matt were dueling hard, both were firing and dodging spells, but Matt was overmatched between Ron and Padma. He could not keep both at bay and still fire back. His shield charm was weakening as the couple hammered spell after spell into it. Matt’s bad leg was also giving out and Hermione stepped in. Her hand supported Matt’s own and slowly he started to rise. Then her own shield charm went up and the two began to duel in tandem.
Ron and Padma were fighting hard, Ron’s hate for Hermione and Matt poured into every spell, verbal and non-verbal. Matt’s anger at the treatment Hermione’s so-called best friend had given her over the past eight months finally had a release. He fired off spells as rapidly as he could, and then Hermione stunned Padma and she crumpled to the floor of the raised stage.
“Yield!” Matt snarled as his and Hermione’s wands pointed at Ron.
“You first!” Ron said and went to cast a spell. Which spell, no one found out as both Matt and Hermione cast a pair of spells at the same time, all three collided and rebounded. Matt was able to throw up a shield just in time. His own spell and Hermione’s bounced off as Ron’s hit him full on in the chest, the other two immediately after. Ron was launched off the side of the stage and landed on his back, unconscious.
Matt and Hermione strode to the edge of the stage and looked down at Ron.
“And stay down!” Matt shouted and grinned at Hermione. She threw her arms around her boyfriend, and he caught her, holding onto her and patting her back, still both covered in slime.
Matt held Hermione in a slimy embrace and dipped his head to kiss her. The heat of battle finally ebbing and his emotions and hers, which had all been running high, finally were given an outlet.
“Well, after that, I think, you’ve got your story, Miss, er, well, Granger, is it?” Rita said.
“Yes, it is, Miss Skeeter.” Hermione said, smiling.
“Ehm, well, I’ll come by the school, perhaps, tomorrow for that interview with Mr. …Santini was it?”
“I’ll let the Headmistress know you’ll be coming, so she doesn’t hex you off the grounds on sight.” Matt replied with a nod.
“Matt that was brilliant.” Harry said as he and Ginny stepped out from beside the gunge tank.
“Well, thank you. It was kind of a long time in coming.” Matt said as he took a breath and then snapped his wrist. His wand turned into a cane, and he leaned on it.
“That’s the first time in months I’ve seen you use that!” Ginny exclaimed. “That must have taken a lot out of you.” Matt simply nodded. Hermione slipped an arm under his other arm to support him and he bit his lip in appreciation.
“Well, hurry off there, you lot. I’ve got to take this down.” Geroge said as the others all climbed off the stage. He waved his wand, and the entire contraption collapsed down to fit inside his robe pocket. “I’ll be having a little chat with my brother as soon as he wakes up.” Geroge said as he levitated Ron’s body, Angelina doing the same for Padma.
“We better get back too; we need a shower.” Matt said looking at Hermione.
“Yeah, you do. Magic can’t clean that slime up. No ‘Scourgify’ for you two.” Cassidy said, popping out of her hiding place between the now vacant benches. “Good old-fashioned No-Maj soap and water is the only counter curse for ya.” She giggled.
“Well, come on, ‘Mione, let’s head back.” Matt said and the couple linked arms as they walked back.
“Matt?” Hermione asked as they limped along the path.
“Yeah?”
“I was thinking…perhaps…we could shower…together?” Hermione’s cheeks were pink under the green smears.
“I’d like that.” Matt said with a grin. “Plus, you said you had something to show me?”
Hermione blushed a deep red, Matt thought for a second that the slime had turned color too. He beamed at her as they walked back.
