Draco nodded, and headed off to meet his former Potions instructor. “Ginny,” Hermione started, almost afraid to bring up this topic, “Just out of curiosity, when are your parents planning on arriving?”
Ginny looked a little bewildered. “Er, I don’t think they are going to arrive until the day of the wedding. I invited them to come to the rehearsal the night before, but Mom said something about how they have a de-Gnoming scheduled, and they can’t change it.”
She paused, and looked at Hermione miserably, tears in her eyes. “It’s just that they don’t want to come. They’ve tried to not let me know, but I can just tell. Dad’s always hated Draco’s father. With good reason I guess. I mean, I wasn’t all that fond of him either, after he gave me Tom Riddle’s diary and all. But, Voldemort’s gone, and he’s been really nice about the wedding, and everything. He seems like he is really trying to make this nice…” Her voice trailed off.
Hermione put her arm around her best friend’s shoulder. “Tell me, Ginny, do you love Draco?” Ginny nodded, so Hermione continued. “And he loves you. It sounds like your parents get along with Draco fine.” She paused. “They just don’t like his father. But don’t worry. You’re not marrying the father. You’re marrying Draco. And besides, from what I can tell, Lucius seems like he’s really trying to be nice – he was even nice to me, and I’m not his, er, favorite type of people. Don’t worry. It’ll all be fine.” Ginny nodded, and dabbed at her eyes with a tissue.

Hermione Granger. Damn. It wasn’t enough that her name kept popping up on articles in Ars Alchemia and even Modern Potions on a regular basis, or that he had to keep hearing from his fellow faculty members how she was one of the “greatest minds to come out of Hogwarts in years”. Now she was here, and she was supposed to be his appointed counterpart for the wedding. It was too bad that he had promised Albus that he would do his best to prevent bloodshed this week, because if he got the chance, he would’ve liked to have beaten Draco and Ginny for orchestrating this whole fiasco. And for partnering him with Hermione.
Gods.
And to find her curled up next to Lucius, hanging on his every word. Did she have absolutely no memory where the senior Malfoy was concerned? Clearly she had no concept of the things that Lucius used to do to women for fun. He shook his head as unwanted images again threatened to invade his mind.
For a woman praised to be so intelligent, she really could be stupid.
Damn it. Now he was going to have to talk with her, and impress upon her the type of person that Lucius Malfoy really was. He sighed. Already his ‘vacation’ was proving to be a great deal of work.

Hermione walked down to dinner with Ginny and Draco. Sitting in the living room, nursing a Scotch, Lucius’ eyes widened a fraction as the three young people entered the room. Snape, staring out the window desultorily, didn’t notice them enter.
Hermione was glad that Ginny had warned her that Lucius expected people to dress up for dinner, but that formal dress robes were not required. This gave her an opportunity to indulge in one of her hobbies. While she hated shopping, she liked to secretly dabble in creating dresses from the Muggle fashions of the 1930s, 40s and 50s. It was a passion she had picked up from her grandmother.
For this evening, she had transfigured a dress of burgundy taffeta. With a fitted bodice, a halter strap, and full skirt, accented with a platinum and diamond pendant given to her by her grandmother, she looked as though she had stepped directly out of the Muggle’s Golden Age of the Silver Screen. Needless to say, the wizarding community had not seen anything like it. Both Ginny and Draco had heartily approved of the dress when they saw it.
Lucius smiled broadly at Hermione. “Miss Granger. May I compliment you on your stunning attire? Please, let me have the honor of escorting you in to dinner.” He reached for her hand, and briefly brought her knuckles to his mouth. Snape turned around at this exchange, and glared at the back of Hermione’s head, while following them in to dinner.
Dinner itself was a somewhat stilted affair. Following tradition, dinner was being served in the smaller of the two formal dining rooms, at a table that seated 18. Lucius presided at the head of the table as he always did, noting that this was one of the few times in past several years that there were more than 2 or 3 people seated at the table. Draco and Ginny sat to one side of the table, while Hermione and Snape sat on the other side of the table.
Draco and Ginny were discussing the wedding plans, while Lucius pretended to listen.
His gaze fell upon Hermione again, sitting across the corner of the table from him. Yes. She could be most certainly interesting.
Hermione looked around the dining room, faintly amused. Clearly maintaining protocol was important here; the Ministry didn’t allow him to have large gatherings – he had had to get special permission to host the wedding – and yet he appeared to keep his manor ready to host a house party at any time. Lucius Malfoy would have made a great English sea captain, brewing tea while the ship around him was rapidly sinking, she mused.
Snape glared at the plate in front of him. What was Hermione playing at, wearing something like that? Although, part of him had to admit, he could see why Lucius had reacted the way he had; she did look devastating in that dress. And when she smiled, well… Gods he didn’t want to think about that.
The damn fool. Didn’t she realize that Lucius Malfoy was not the kind of fire that she wanted to be playing with?
Throughout dinner, Hermione had tried to make conversation with Snape, asking him about Hogwarts, asking him about his own personal research, and finally asking him about some of the articles in the latest Ars Alchemia. When she saw that she was only going to get one or two word answers out of him, she turned her attention away from the brooding man, and back to Ginny, Draco, and Lucius.
Snape sat quietly fuming. What the hell was she doing trying to talk to him about potions, when she was looking like she was trying to be part Veela?
When dinner ended, Hermione went off with Draco and Ginny, while Lucius invited Snape for a drink in the library. Snape agreed, privately thinking that the week might best be enjoyed in a continuous alcoholic haze.
Lucius handed Snape a glass, and they both sat down in wing chairs facing the fireplace in the library. Lucius pondered, “Since when have attractive young women starting becoming Potions specialists?”
“Since never,” Snape growled. “Keep your hands off the girl.”
Lucius raised an eyebrow. “What‘s eating at you? I realize that the Ministry has put all sorts of restrictions on what I can and cannot do, but I didn’t realize that appreciating an attractive woman was also on the list. Besides, I’m not dead, you know. And you have to admit Hermione looked damn good tonight. Unless,” Lucius smiled wickedly, “That part of you has just shriveled up out of disuse and disinterest.”
I don’t have to admit anything, thought Snape grimly. Damn. I’m going to have to talk to Hermione. Tonight. And then I am going to throttle her. Damn her. “Fuck off, Lucius.”
Lucius smiled; he still knew how to get to his former partner-in-crime.
