Chapter Five
~*~
"I can't blame you for being upset, Harry," Remus said as he watched the young man sympathetically.
Harry sighed, "I just can't believe any of this is happening to me. I mean, one second I find out my father never died, and the next second, I discover that he was married to my godfather! You know, it really sounds like none of them wanted anything to do with me."
"Harry, you know that's not true," Remus said gently.
"As far as Sirius is concerned, I know it's not true," Harry murmured. "He put his arse on the line for me so many times until Gods, Remus, I want him to be alive again."
"And he will be before you know it," Remus replied confidently.
"What do you think will happen between him and my dad?"
Remus leaned back in his chair. "Not sure to be honest. They both truly loved each other, Harry, but I do have to admit that after awhile, James became totally interested in you and therefore your mother's wellbeing. He always loved Sirius, but well "
Harry drew his knees up to his chest and looked at Remus curiously. &nbHow How do you feel about my dad being back? I mean, it sounds like he wasn't exactly nice to you after Sirius left him."
"True. He said some very hurtful things, but I also know that he was going through a lot and was under a lot of pressure. I'm not trying to make up excuses for him, but I'm willing to forgive him, of course. He's one of my closest friends, and he always will be no matter what."
Harry smiled bitterly. "You're too nice sometimes, aren't you?"
"Perhaps. Perhaps not. Look Harry, I know that all of this has come as a shock to you, but I really think that you should try to talk to your father again. He's not a bad person at all. Like I said before, a lot was going on then, and things were-"
"Totally screwed up?" Harry interrupted.
"Those weren't the exact words I was going to use, but you're on the right track," Remus replied. "I know that your dad, mum, and Sirius all loved you dearly, Harry."
Harry looked down at the floor sadly. "Maybe I was a bit harsh on him. I can't believe he was locked away for so many years. Must have been awful." Harry looked up at Remus. "Does my dad know that Sirius was in Azkaban?"
Remus ran his fingers through his hair and shrugged his shoulders. "I haven't spoken with him at all, Harry. Did he mention anything to you?"
Harry shook his head.
"Well then, there's a good chance he doesn't know."
"Bloody hell, now that is going to come as a shock to him," Harry muttered.
"I agree."
"So do you know why Sirius left?"
Remus glanced out the window and then back at Harry. "Yes, but it's not really my place to tell you or your father or anyone else."
"You want Sirius to explain?"
"I think that would be for the best, Harry."

"Remus," James said quietly as he looked up from the chair he was currently occupying. "I-"
"Don't get up, James," Remus said as he closed the door behind him. He sat down across from his friend and studied James. "You look exhausted."
James shrugged his shoulders. "I guess being locked away does that to you."
"I'm sorry you had to go through that," Remus said. "It just doesn't seem fair."
"And I'm sorry I was such a fucking bastard to you the last time I saw you," James murmured, looking at Remus with tearful hazel eyes. "You have no idea how sorry I am."
Remus leaned forward and placed a hand on James' knee. "Stop apologizing, James. A lot was going on back then, and you-"
"That's no excuse," James replied sadly.
"James, there's something I need to tell you. Well, something that Dumbledore wants me to tell you before you see Sirius again," Remus started slowly.
James looked at his friend worriedly. "What is it, Remus? Is it about where he went when he left?" James asked hopefully.
Remus shook his head. "I do know what happened, but I can't tell you, James. I really believe that Sirius should be the one to tell you about that."
"I understand. Hopefully, he'll want to talk to me," James murmured. "I made such a bloody mess of things." He looked back at Remus. "What do you have to tell me then?"
"Of course you remember that your secret keeper was Pettigrew?" Remus began.
James scowled. "Traitor. Yes, I remember. How could I possibly forget? Anyway, the bloody bastard is the one who finally freed me. I still hate him, though."
"As do I," Remus agreed. "He was never blamed for what happened, though. Sirius was."
James' eyes widened and he stared at Remus. "Sirius wasn't our secret keeper, though! How could he possibly have been blamed?"
"Did Dumbledore know Peter was your secret keeper?" Remus asked gently.
Groaning, James shook his head. "Nobody else knew. Nobody except for myself, Lily, and Peter." Nervously, he looked at Remus again. "What happened to Sirius?"
"He was sent to Azkaban without a trial," Remus answered softly.
James just stared in shock, too stunned to speak.
"Even I didn't believe him, James," Remus said, putting his face in his hands. "Dumbledore didn't, either. Nobody did. He spent twelve years there before he escaped as Padfoot. Then he spent a couple years on the run. When he died, he was still considered guilty. Had he been found, he surely would have been given the dementor's kiss."
James stood up and grabbed a nearby candlestick. He threw it across the room and watched it smash against the wall. "You didn't even believe him?" he asked dangerously. "How in the hell could you possibly think he was guilty?"
"James, I'm-"
James screamed out in frustration and started pacing the room. "Fuck, Remus! I love him so fucking much! I can't believe he had to go through that! I can't believe you of all people didn't even believe him. What in the hell were you thinking?"
"I-"
"And they didn't even give him a trial?" James screamed out again and threw a small figurine against the wall.
Remus stood up and put a hand on James' shoulder. James shook the hand away and glared at Remus.
"How does Harry know Sirius?" James asked almost desperately.
"It's a long story, but they met at the end of Harry's third year," Remus replied quietly, his amber eyes filled with unshed tears. "At first, Harry thought Sirius was guilty, but-"
"WHAT?"
"He quickly discovered the truth, as did I," Remus finished. "I'm so sorry, James. I'm so sorry that I never believed him. I should have. I just it's just that I don't know why."
James slumped down in his chair again and looked up at Remus. "Please tell me why he left me, Remus. You owe it to me now."
"I dRemuRemus asked weakly.
James stared at the wall across from him and shrugged his shoulders. "Maybe not. I guess he's the one you owe something to after the way you didn't believe him."
"Before he died, I really think we worked everything out," Remus said quietly. "That's not to say that I don't still feel extremely guilty."
"And you should," James remarked bitterly. "Please tell me why he left, Remus! It's been eating me alive for years!"
Remus looked at James sympathetically and finally broke down. "You must have known that he felt completely left out."
"But he did love Harry?"
"Of course he did. But he really was beginning to believe that you didn't love him anymore."
"That's not true!" James exclaimed.
"You'll have to explain that to him then."
"I'll do my best," James murmured tiredly. "That's the only reason he left then? Because he didn't think that I loved him?"
Remus shook his head. "There was another reason, James."
"You were the two of you together?" James asked warily.
Remus almost laughed and shook his head. "I won't deny that I felt much more towards him than simply friendship, but I never acted on anything, and he never gave me any reason to."
"Then what?"
"A while after Harry was born, do you recall him saying he didn't feel good?"
"Yeah. I always figured he was trying to get me to spend more time with him. It almost made me angry because most of the time he seemed fine, and I knew he was just trying to take me away from Lily and Harry, but I-"
"You ignorant prat!" Remus exclaimed, surprising both himself and James. "He was pregnant!"
