CHAPTER 5: Friction
For one week all was well inside Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. For one week there were no confrontations between the school's most heated rivals: The Gryffindors vs. The Slytherins. Despite the rumors floating around about Blaise Zabini and Draco Malfoy, tempers surprisingly didn't erupt.
One week.
Everything came to a boil one Friday in Potions.
*****************************************
Professor Severus Snape was known for having a sick sense of humor even though he never smiled--at least his colleagues knew this. His students would have cut off their own arms in shock if someone had informed them that their creepy Potions teacher actually found things—(gasp)—amusing.
Unfortunately, it was the things that he found amusing that provided his students with hours upon hours of torture every week.
"I am going to be putting you all in groups for this potion." Snape drawled in his usual voice void with emotion. "When I call your names together, that means you two are partners."
The class, as one, stifled a groan.
"Granger and Bulstrode, Thomas and Finnegan, Patil and Parkinson, Weasley and Goyle, Longbottom and Crabbe, Potter and—." Here Snape gave an evil smirk. "Malfoy."
Harry groaned as Snape continued down the roll. Why wasn't he surprised? Draco, on the other hand, was pleased. Maybe he could try being nicer to Harry today. After all, it was already the second week in September and he had until Halloween to kill Potter.
Ron gave an angry snort from beside Harry as he collected his books to move to Goyle's lab station. "Why don't you pair Malfoy with Zabini?" Ron glared venomously at Draco. "Oh wait, that's right, he's not here because you killed him!"
The class immediately erupted into hushed whispers and gasps. Draco clenched his pale hands into fists and slowly turned around to confront Ron. "I did no such thing, Weasel, and you would do well to remember in the future not to piss me off."
"What? Are you going to kill me too?" Ron sneered. He ignored the restraining hand that Hermione lay on his shoulder. "Gonna make me disappear off the face of the bloody planet?"
"Mr. Weasley, that's enough!" Snape roared and started to stride towards them.
Draco smiled evilly. "Don't tempt me, Weasel. Don't tempt me."
Harry had had enough. "Lay off him, Malfoy."
Draco swung around to face down his nemesis. "I didn't realize that you were in this conversation, Potter, so sod off!"
"Make me." Harry snarled back; green eyes glinting.
Before the blonde could say anything, Snape had finally reached the squabbling boys. "I said enough! Ten points from Gryffindor for starting trouble in my class. Now get into your assigned groups!"
The Gryffindors grumbled angrily for Snape's unfair treatment. Even though they were used to it after six years, it never failed to infuriate them.
Harry plopped down in the seat next to Draco and studied the ingredients for their sleeping draught. "All right. Let's make this union as painless as possible. We need to get twice as much of the eye of newt. I'll go get the ingredients and write the summary if you make the potion. Deal?"
"Whatever." Malfoy snapped, still glaring across the aisle at Ron. Harry narrowed his eyes and stormed up front to get their materials. On his way back, he noticed the angry look on Dean's face and that Seamus was almost in tears. *What on earth is going on with them?* He wondered, concerned. Draco had their cauldron set up and boiling already, so Harry handed over the first ingredient to the sullen Slytherin.
Suddenly there came a knock at the door. Professor McGonagall peeked in; her sharp eyes landing on Snape. "Severus, Dumbledore needs to see you immediately in his office."
Snape scowled. "I'm in the middle of my class, Minerva. What could be so important?"
"Now, Severus. It will just be a moment." With that, the witch left abruptly.
Snape turned to his class and eyed them suspiciously. "I will only be gone a moment. Continue working on your potion and DO NOT move from this room until I get back. Is that clear?" His students nodded. Satisfied with this, Snape swept towards the door. "And try not to—kill each other."
Everyone looked pointedly at Draco and Harry.
The two rivals worked in relative silence despite the sounds of bickering going on around them from their classmates. Harry refused to let Malfoy get to him like that, so he concentrated on getting their assignment done. That worked until curiosity got the better of him. He warily eyed Malfoy and studied him for a moment. The other boy's handsome face was screwed up with the effort of stirring the potion correctly. Harry was about to chicken out and go back to polishing up their potion's summary, when the other teen spoke in his infamous drawl.
"Something you find interesting, Potter?"
"What?" Harry squeaked guiltily and almost knocked over his ink pot. He looked up to find his opponent's gray eyes trained on him in amusement.
"Well, you were staring at me just now, weren't you? But then again, I don’t blame you."
"Conceited much?" Harry snapped in disgust. "I was just wondering if you--if you were--if you had anything to do with--"
"With Blaise?" Draco looked away and continued stirring the thick solution.
"Well, uh—yeah."
"Do you really think I could've done something to him? To what? Get the Prefect position?"
"Actually, yes. I think you're capable of anything, Malfoy." *Liar* Harry's mind screamed. *I don't really think you could be capable of murder, do I?*
Draco smirked. "Then you'd be right, Potter. I would do anything to get what I want. anything. You don’t want to cross me." Draco groaned inwardly. *Why did I just say that? I'm supposed to be trying to either befriend him or get into his pants! Dammit!*
Harry was furious. "So you did do something to him! Ron was right about you." He didn't notice his voice rising as he backed away from the table in disgust. "Part of me didn't believe it. I knew you were a royal arse, but I didn't really think—"
"Think what you want, Potter. I don't give a flying rat's arse, if you believe me or not!" Draco snapped back, his chest heaving. The room was riveted on the two boys locked in verbal battle. Suddenly Ron stepped up to Harry's side and smirked.
"We always knew you'd get your just desserts one day, Malfoy. When they send you away to Azkaban for murder, I hope you rot in hell!"
Draco lunged at Ron and the two hit the ground swinging. People started yelling as they knocked into several tables causing the cauldrons to shake violently. A couple of cauldrons fell over and their contents splashed on many of the students standing nearby. One by one, the students started dropping into a deep slumber as the sleeping draught took effect. Ron and Draco didn't notice as they were too busy pummeling the living daylights out of one another. Hermione grabbed her wand and tried to stupefy the two boys, but just as the words were about to leave her lips, some of the spilled potion puddled around her shoes and she was out like a light.
"I'm going to kill you!" Draco growled and wrapped his pale hands around Ron's neck. Ron struggled with him and tried to get air into his oxygen starved lungs, but the blonde Slytherin would not relent. Harry pounced on Draco's back and knocked him off of his best friend. As Ron tried to breathe, The Boy Who Lived found himself grappling violently on the floor with his arch rival. Over and over the two flipped, tables and chairs toppling over with the force of their fury.
"Get off me, Malfoy!" Harry shouted as Draco pinned him to the floor. Ron got up and grabbed hold of the blonde's robes, but Draco was like a wild man and shook him off--causing Ron to collide with a table. The blonde boy grinned maniacally at Harry; silver eyes glinting with malevolent intent. He looked positively demented and a shiver of fear trickled down Harry's spine. He managed to free one arm and swung up with all of his might. Draco howled and flew sideways onto his back. Before he could blink, Harry straddled his hips and smacked his rival's head back onto the cold stone floor.
"Bastard!" Harry hissed angrily and smacked Draco's head onto the floor again. Draco shoved one hand up and landed a brutal blow to Harry's chin. The Gryffindor rocked back with the force of the strike and almost toppled over. He managed to right himself almost immediately and was shocked when he felt a sudden hardness underneath him. *NO WAY—that can't be what I think it is.*
His momentary hesitation proved to be his downfall and Draco was soon on top again, pinning Harry roughly into floor and subtly pressing his hips down. Harry gasped and struggled against Draco, but to no avail. Shocked green eyes flew to determined gray as the blonde started to just barely grind his erection against the Gryffindor.
"Feel that, Potter?" The Slytherin snarled.
Harry shoved against the body pinning him down onto the floor, but Draco was like an immovable rock. He felt the other boy's hardness rubbing against—against is OWN? What the fuck? *I'm not enjoying this. I'm not. I'm NOT gay!* To his horror, Draco continued to move just barely against him, but still managed to make it look as if he was fighting. *Didn't everyone know? Couldn't they SEE what was actually going on?* Harry thought wildly as his traitorous body continued it's mind boggling betrayal. The two boys continued to writhe against each other--a tangle of robes, legs and arms--and Harry found himself wanting more—wanting to wrap his legs around his nemesis and just thrust, thrust, thrust—
"What are you—doing, Malfoy?" Harry panted; feeling slightly lightheaded against this particular attack. He continued to wrestle Draco hoping that what they were actually doing wouldn't be discovered by the rest of their screaming classmates--those who were still awake that is.
"Fighting you, Potter. I thought that much was obvious."
"You call this fighting?" Harry groaned against his will and bucked up slightly under Draco. "I'd call it fucking."
Draco leaned down and whispered in Harry's ear, "With us—is there really a difference?"
"WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON IN HERE?!"
Everyone froze.
Professor Snape stood in the doorway, hands clenched in unbridled rage. He surveyed the scene before him. The whole room was in complete disarray. Tables were knocked onto their sides; chairs were toppled over. Cauldrons were either bubbling over or lying upside down--their contents all over the floor. Puddles of sleeping draught lay over most of the furniture and the unfortunate few that were snoring away on the floor. Ron was just coming to after being shoved into the corner of a nearby table by Malfoy. He rubbed the fast swelling knot on the side of his head and hissed in pain. Harry and Draco were on the floor in what appeared to be a fight, and both boys were extremely flushed. Snape glared at them and tried to control his temper. It was taking all of his will power, and then some, not to hex every last one of the little hellions.
"Who—is responsible for this?"
The students were not fooled by the calm way Snape was speaking. They knew he was about to erupt. Several students pointed reluctantly at Ron, Draco and Harry.
"Mr. Malfoy, Mr. Potter and Mr. Weasley—head to Dumbledore’s office."
"But--"
"No buts, Mr. Weasley. I am not in the mood for your lies. Just do as I say." He glared at Draco and Harry. "Mr. Malfoy, would you kindly get off of Mr. Potter?"
Reluctantly, Draco stood up and shifted awkwardly. Thank Merlin for robes. He still had a little problem that needed to be taken care of. Harry stood up much more slowly and blushed bright red. He had never been more embarrassed.
"What about our belongings? Do you want us to take--"
"What I want, Mr. Potter, is for all three of you to march your sorry arses over to the Headmaster's office. I want you out of my sight! Now GO!"
They didn't need to be told again. Snape looked mad enough to kill. The three boys hurriedly gathered up their school bags and books. As Harry zipped up his bag, he noticed that Pansy Parkinson was staring at him suspiciously. He froze. She couldn't know, could she? He was distracted by the sight of Hermione curled up on the ground fast asleep; her wand still in her hand. Moving towards her, he was stopped by a heavy hand on his shoulder.
"When I give you an order, Mr. Potter, I expect you to follow it!" Snape hissed into his face. "I will take care of the sleeping students. Now get going! The password is 'ice mice'. I will be there after I clean up your mess!"
Harry didn't bother explaining that it was hardly all his fault, he just hurried towards the door and followed Ron and Draco out.
*********************************************
"This is all your fault, Malfoy!" Ron snapped as the three boys trudged towards Dumbledore's office. Draco was in front striding effortlessly as usual. It seemed as if awkwardness was just not in his nature. The blonde gave Ron a cool look that immediately quelled all further taunts.
"Shut. Up. Weasley. Or I will make you shut up."
Ron hesitated, then wisely shut up.
Draco glanced back at Harry and gave him a knowing smirk. "It's amazing what you find out about your enemies, Potter. For instance, I would never have guessed that you liked it rough."
Harry flushed a deep red and gave the Slytherin a warning glare. "Sod off, Malfoy." *Oh. My. God. Please, Merlin, do not let him say anything else.*
Ron, meanwhile, was looking between the two of them curiously. "What's he on about, Harry?"
Still a bit pink around his ears, Harry swept by Draco and stormed down the hall. "Who knows, Ron? I don't speak fluent ‘asshole'." Ron hurried after his angry friend--Draco's laughter reverberating around them.
