He was staring at her.
Draco Malfoy, self-styled lord of Slytherin House, known to most outside of his house as Ferret, was staring at her.
His pale gray eyes seemed fixated on her. The blond boy kept his cold gaze on her, barely eating, his arms casually resting on the table before him.
Isabelle was not normally given to nerves, but this constant regard from Malfoy did cause some fluttering in her stomach. Was he going to have her beaten up again? She hadn't done anything, to her knowledge, to deserve it. On the other hand, she didn't know that she deserved it before, either. All she had done was state the facts.
She got up and moved down the circle to where her youngest brother, Mark, sat with his fellow third year Ravenclaws. His dark eyes looked up as she approached. "Isabelle," he nodded.
"Mark." She sat down next to him. "Have you heard any news from our little snake in the grass?"
He shrugged. "Nope. Should I? Heard they had a wild party a couple nights ago."
She swallowed. "Someone's staring at me."
Mark looked casually around the table and let out a low whistle, pursing up his thin lips. His narrow eyebrows raised in surprise. "What'd you do to Malfoy this time? Tell him he's an arrogant prick?"
She frowned. "I didn't do anything. I'm worried he means to do me harm. Again."
He shrugged. "Doubt it. He's been pretty restrained, for Malfoy, this year. Since the War ended, anyway."
Malfoy rose, then, and made his way casually around the table toward the siblings. She stiffened and nodded to Mark in farewell. He couldn't do anything to her in the Great Hall, not with Dumbledore and the teachers here.
His well-known low drawl met her ears as she turned to go to her old place. "I need to talk to you, de Beaufort."
She raised her head proudly, meeting his cool eyes with what she hoped was frosty indifference. "Why?"
His nostrils flared a little and his mouth twisted in distaste. "I want to … apologize." He spat the word out as if it tasted bad.
She blinked. Of all the things she would have guessed Malfoy would say, that was not one of them. She nodded. "Very well. Go ahead."
He frowned. "Not here. The library. Thirty minutes." He turned on his heel and swept away, his robes making a soft silky sound as he moved.
She watched him leave, puzzled. Malfoy must have some scheme up his sleeve that he needed her for. Still, seeing him admit he was wrong about anything was worth the trip.
She hurried through the rest of her dinner and then walked to the library, making it there ten minutes early. She chose a seat in a cozy corner, where she could see the door but there was some shelter from other library patrons, and whipped out the week's Prophet to check the latest news.
He came in about five minutes later, while she was reading yet another article extolling the virtues of the new Marriage Law, and strode directly to her. She looked up cautiously.
His lips parted, then closed again. "You read that thing, de Beaufor/P>
/P>
She put the paper down and folded her hands neatly in her lap, trusting to routine to soothe her nerves. "It does give the official stance of the Ministry."
"Hmph." He draped himself across a chair directly opposite her and stated bluntly, "You were right that day and I was wrong. I was a fool. I am sorry you were hurt by it." His scathing words were followed by silence as he closed his eyes and she watched him warily, waiting for the catch.
The silence stretched uncomfortably between them. His eyes flew open and searched her face. He spread his hands wide. "Well?"
She chose her words carefully. "I am glad you chose to make up for your prior misdeeds and I accept your apology." It was stiff and formal, but not dangerous.
He leaned forward. "I have a proposition for you."
Now it came. She relaxed a little in the chair and her hands stopped twisting around each other. "What is it?"
"I should like for you to marry me."
She didn't even try to hold the laughter back. It blasted out of her, ringing through the quiet library like a cannon. She howled, holding her sides, shaking in her chair, gasping for breath, as Malfoy's pale, pointed face changed from arrogant and self-satid tod to concern to pure rage. She couldn't stop as he leapt from the chair and hissed at her, "Just remember, Isabelle, I tried the direct approach," and stormed out of the room. She kept laughing as Madam Pince came over, anger and authority in every move, to shush her.
"Silencio!" With a quick wave of her wand, Pince silenced Isabelle's whoops of laughter, then walked back to her desk, satisfied that the sanctity of her library had been restored.
So Isabelle laughed on for another ten minutes silently, tears rolling down her face, grasping her sides as they ached from the effort, rolling back and forth in the chair.
She wondered who, once she calmed enough to think, had really come to the library to see her. It certainly wasn't Draco Malfoy. Perhaps someone had been playing with Polyjuice potion or Illusion charms. She sighed. Malfoy would certainly be unhappy wihe dhe deception.

He stalked to the Owlery in a towering rage. He'd tried to be direct with the girl. He'd apologized and was going to explain what he needed from her when she rejected him, laughing at him. No one laughed at a proposal from a Malfoy and got away with it.
Well. He'd just have to do this the Slytherin way. He gave the letter to his eagle owl, stroking the animal's head with a gentleness few suspected him capable of. "I'll probably have an answer back in an hour." He chuckled as his owl flew on silent wings toward its destination.
