Private Potions lesson
It was a week before Snape finally pulled Thea aside after a potions lesson and informed her that he wished her to meet him in the dungeon at 7.00p.m sharp. Thea nodded suppressing a radiant smile. That inner smile left her however when she walked into her room and instantly sensed that something was amiss.
Her eyes scanned the dorm room thoroughly. The beds were all made, and everything seemed to be in it's usual place, but she couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong. Silently she strode across the plush carpet towards her desk. Then it clicked. The desk itself was moved a few inches away from the wall and it's usual position. Thea frowned, her dark eyes scanning the desktop.
Now why would someone be moving out her desk? To check for hidden compartments at the back. She had no doubt as to who had ordered this, but she wondered at who might have carried out the deed, because leaving the desk in a new position showed carelessness.
Thea opened each of the drawers in turn but all her papers were there. Suddenly tired she sank down onto the end of her bed, her head resting in her hands. She still hadn't worked out a solution to her problem. Should she make a stand against Voldemort, and would that entail running for the rest of her life? Killing him would be a permanent solution, but Thea was not arrogant enough to assume she could commit such an act.
Maybe it would be possible for her to pledge her allegiance yet somehow manage not to commit any acts which were too atrocious? She shook her head, her eyes squeezed shut against her palms. For that to work she would have to take on the role of double agent, and who could survive something like that?
Snape paced his study, his forehead creased in a frown, his mind deep in thought. If what Dumbledore suspected was true, than Thea and maybe others were soon to be in a lot of trouble. Snape cursed silently under his breath.
At first he had assumed that due to her family history Thea would already have joined the growing ranks of the DeathEaters. Now that seemed unlikely, and Snape wondered at her options. It seemed to him like theree noe none. And if Severus Snape thought it was hopeless, than it mostly likely was.
Thea was tired but excited by the time she knocked on the classroom door, and she swallowed as she heard Snape's unmistakeable voice call a curt, 'Come in'.
Thea had fallen asleep during her pondering of her current situation, and had only woken up when her roommates boisterously entered the dorm. Panicked that she would be late Thea threw on a quick change of clothes and rushed out the door. On the way she had attempted to pull back her hair, but a few unruly strands kept falling into her face.
Thea noticed the slightly disdainful look Snape gave her muggle clothes. She had simply pulled an oversized sweatshirt over the loose black trousers she habitually wore under her robes. The thought of wearing those heavy robes tonight had seemed strangely undesirable.
Pulling back her shoulders Thea walked over to where Snape sat behind his desk and peered with interest at the papers before him. One in particular caught her eye. Noticing her interest Snape smiled in satisfaction.
'I thought that might interest you, Miss.Carter.' When he nodded at her Thea took that as permission to further study the official looking document.
The page was covered in the most fascinating formulae Thea had ever seen, and she was extremely well read. Some of the equations seemed fairly familiar.
'Interesting.' She said, her voice slightly husky. 'A slightly adapted medieval structure.'
'Very good.' Snape's eyes gleamed, 'But what are the basic equations substituted with?'
Thea frowned, her mind scanning over all possible sources. Many ideas came to mind, but none fitted the equations on the page. Slightly frustrated, she shook her head.
'I have no idea, sir.'
Snape smiled. 'I didn't expect even you to know the answer, Miss.Carter. It was unfair of me.'
Thea raised an eyebrow at his 'unfair' comment. Since when did Snape care about what was fair?
He must have noticed because he laughed, and Thea looked up in surprise. This wasn't the sardonic chuckle she was so used to hearing in all her years at Hogwarts; this was a deep, throaty, rolling kind of laugh. It was surprisingly pleasant. Thea had always known there was much more to Snape than first assumed, but she had never really thought that these things would be altogether pleasing or positive.
'This formula does not concern our experiments however.' Snape continued. 'I was simply curious as to whether you might recognise such a structure.'
Thea shook her head with a smile. Oddly she didn't feel as if she had failed. Recently Snape grated on her less and less, and she wondered if they were really so very different.
The work was engrossing and neither noticed the time until Thea began to noticeably lag. Snape looked at her slightly blood shot eyes and the bruised skin underneath and decided that it was time to end their experiments.
When Thea protested he held back a chuckle. She was pleasingly enthusiastic and dedicated. She was also very capable at tutoring others. She would make a great teacher one day if she chose such a profession.
The potion they were working on was Veritaserum; the truth serum they had worked on in class. Veritaserum worked so that the subject had to tell the truth whether they wanted to or not, but they are fully aware that they are speaking against their will. Snape had been charged by the Ministry of Magic to make a formula that would make the subject unaware that they were speaking against their will, maybe even unaware of the conversation itself. Thea had suggested that wiping the conversation from the subjects mind could bring up suspicions over 'lost time' therefore the better option was to make the potion fool the subject into believing a normal conversation, of which he had been a willing participate, had taken place, without remembering exactly what had been said. Snape had agreed, and Thea had felt decidedly pleased about his approval.
The potion still needed to be tested, and although Thea knew they hadn't cracked it yet, she wanted to see what change, if any, they had made.
'Please, professor,' Thea asked, 'Couldn't we quickly test it before I go?'
Snape paused as if in thought. The girl was looking unusually tired but he felt that testing the mixture was a good idea. He nodded, before ladling a small amount out of the cauldron and raising it to Thea's lips. She swallowed without any hesitation.
'What is your name?' Snape asked as he moved round to his desk so that he could take notes.
'Thea Katrina Carter.'
'Whom do you share a dorm with?'
'Sandra, Alicia and Alexie.'
'And do you like these girls?'
'I like Sandra. I tolerate the others.'
Snape made a note. She was not only answering questions but elaborating on them.
'And how are you feeling now?'
'Exhausted. And weak. I feel like I don't have any control over myself.'
Snape noticed with interest how her face showed no sign of reaction to her statements. Interesting.
'Why are you so tired?'
'I can't sleep at night, I'm too busy thinking; planning.'
'For exams?'
'No.' Thea said firmly. 'Things which are much more important.'
She suddenly frowned and her eyes appeared less glazed, apparently the potion's strength wore off fairly quickly.
'Thank you.' Snape said absently as he made a quick note.
'No thank you.' Thea spoke, her voice still clear. 'I really appreciate the chance to work with you. I've always admired you and your skills.'
Thea began to laugh, and Snape raised an eyebrow as a smile tugged at his lips. He went to her and handed her the antidote they had brewed earlier. She drank it in one gulp.
'I'm sorry I laughed.' She said as she met his eye. 'It's just I was so surprised to hear myself being so forthcoming.'
Snape merely smiled. 'So you remember our conversation?'
Thea frowned. 'I remember the questions you asked me, but not all the answers. In fact I can only remember the answer I gave to the last two questions.' Her face broke into a genuine smile. 'That's quite a pleasing result.'
'Indeed.' Snape agreed, his features giving away nothing, though Thea felt he was pleased too.
'May I go over the notes, make some additions?' Thea asked trying to keep the naked eagerness out of her voice.
'I'm afraid I cannot let you take the documents from this room.' He replied as his hands deftly cleared away various ingredients and their bottles.
'Then I'll do it now.' Thea said making her way to his desk as if to sit down.
'I'm afraid not, Miss.Carter. You must go back to your dorm now.'
Thea tried not to frown. 'Oh, I'm not tired. . .' she started.
Snape walked over to her. 'Thea, it is quite clear to both of us that you need to get some rest. It is no shame to need to sleep, you know.'
Thea stared into his dark eyes, deciding whether to push the issue or not. She smiled weakly, 'Alright, I submit to your greater will.' She dared to tease. 'But I insist that you allow me to help you clear up.'
Snape rolled his eyes, but not before she caught the hint of amusement in them.
'Of course, Miss Carter. It is expected of you.'
