Unexpected Obsessions
Chapter 5 Hermione's Slytherin Ability
Severus arrived home to find his house exactly as he'd left it last July. The house elves house cleaned it into immaculate condition, as always, and there was the smell of fresh baked sugar cookies in the air. Although he hated to admit it, Severus really did like his month long visit at home. He often went the entire month without hearing from anyone. He could perfect difficult potions, fly on his broom, and read undisturbed. He was thrilled Hermione was here with him. He'd never brought another home to his house in his entire life.
While growing up, his asshole father made sure he didn't want to bring anyone home. And his mother didn't like to entertain. She had no idea her husband was a master of the Dark Arts nor that her son was once a death eater. When Severus' father died, she moved to Rome to be near her family. Severus was only twenty, and his sister was fifteen. She was sent to Durmstrang, and had become a very successful Transfigurations Professor. She now was a divorced mother of three, which drove their mother crazy. She couldn't understand why someone so beautiful as Valeria would prefer to spend her life alone. Prisca, Severus' mother, was always harassing her about her unusual lifestyle. But, Severus on the other hand was her pride and joy. He wanted to tell her about his sordid past, but he knew it would kill her. She always wondered why he'd never married nor had any children. He always replied, "I haven't found anyone to bestow my affections upon."
He knew they would be visiting very soon. They always came the second week of July, and left the following Saturday. Severus was looking forward to his mother visiting but dreading his sister. She no doubt would have her children with her and they would leave his house in shambles. The Weasley twins were no match for Octavos and Alexander. They could tear his home apart in less than fifteen minutes. However, her daughter Julia, was a very mild-mannered young woman. She was very highly intelligent and took from her mother's side. She had inherited Severus' passion for brewing potions. She was fifteen, Octavos was 8, and Alexander was 7. His sister would more than likely tear Hermione apart, and would no doubt immediately recognize her heritage. His family prided itself of being full-blooded witches and wizards, and he knew how they'd react to her being born from muggles.
They settled in and literally spent the entire first week in bed. Severus would often summon books from his library, and they'd read together tucked tightly beneath the sheets. Other times they would lay there talking about their families and their lives, wondering what brought them to each other. But mostly, they would make love, then fall asleep, wake up, make love again, eat dinner, bathe together, and fall asleep again. Hermione quickly realized she could get used to this life. She hadn't even explored his home yet, nor swam in the gigantic pool. He was enjoying her companionship more than anything. He didn't mind being here so much now that she was. It seems that she was his missing ingredient to life. He now had found the perfect recipe to utter bliss.
On the Sunday following their arrival, Severus felt he should warn her about his mother and sister. He'd received an owl at breakfast announcing their dates of arrival and he wanted to get her used to how they were. His mother would be arriving that evening after dinner. However Valeria couldn't get away from school duties until Thursday evening. This worked out very nicely though. She'd be leaving her children at home with their father, and rus rus was nearly delirious with joy that they wouldn't be coming this year.. She'd be leaving with Prisca on Sunday, so she would be there for only four days. This pleased him to no end.
That morning, they had finally ventured out of the bed and onto the terrace. After eating lunch, he told her they needed to discuss his mother and sister's visit. She was a little confused, but very interested. He had told her much about them, but she felt this wasn't going to be a pleasant conversation.
"Hermione, I know I've told you about my sister and mother, but I haven't told you everything. They can be a bit too much to endure sometimes. My family line is one that can be traced back to the beginning days of Hogwarts. They are strictly speaking an old wizarding family set in their ways. My sister in particular. Now, she may not live her life the way we were brought up, but I'm not one to judge. My mother has always wanted me to be happy, and she may question your intentions with me. Speak your heart Hermione. She can tell when someone is lying to her."
"Severus, I love you. There's nothing more to tell." She placed her hand on his, and he felt reassured.
"As I love you. But you must understand something. They will know your heritage, not that that is bad, but they may try to test your abilities some. My sister is very good at charms as well as you and they both are excellent at dueling. Not that they would challenge you."
"I would hope not!" She was getting more and more uncomfortable by the minute. She thought about leaving and then returning when they were gone.
"Severus, would you mind if I left, and then when they're gone I could come back? I'm a little bit apprehensive about meeting them. I don't want them to think I don't love you."
"Hermione, I would mind very much if you left. Let me explain something to you. I've never once, ever introduced a woman to my mother nor my sister. I am doing this because I love you and hope we will be together for all eternity. I wouldn't have invited you here if I thought for one moment you couldn't handle anything they threw your way. You're a very strong, talented, determined witch. If they don't see you for what you are, then to hell with them both." Hermione was very touched by Severus' declaration.
"Severus, you never cease to amaze me. Do you know that?"
"I hope not. Now, please don't mention anything about the Malfoy's or death eaters. My mother would have my head if she knew half of the things in my past. I simply choose not to tell her because I do not want to hurt her. And use as much magic as possible, but I do have one request. A very dreaded request. Would you mind terribly sleeping in the adjoining guest room?"
Hermione wanted to wake in his arms every morning, and the thought of sleeping alone disappointed her greatly. As Severus sensed her dilemma, he suggested that she could come into his room by way of the adjoining door. "I don't want to spend one night alone without you in my arms. But, we must act as if we're sleeping in separate beds. As I said, they are set in their ways and the idea of us sharing a room and not being betrothed to one another will cause a bit of a raucous. Come on, I'll help you move some of your things in there to make it appear as if you're staying in there."
"Severus I hope you know what you're doing. I don't want to cause problems between your family, but I will not let someone take advantage of me either. You know my temper and you know that I will stand up for what I want. I just hope they don't cross me on their visit." She turned on her heel and began picking up a few things to take into the next bedroom.
"I hope they don't either," he mumbled under his breath. He resisted the urge to go to his lab and make up a very powerful sleeping potion that would knock him out for the next week. Severus, you don't have any gray hairs. But by the end of the week, I'm figuring on at least a thousand. He agreed with his inner voice. He knew this was probably going to be one of the most hectic weeks in all his life. Glancing at the clock, they only had six hours until his mother would arrive. He signaled for Dinky, one of his elves, and told him to prepare his mother's bedroom. He also told him to prepare something fantastic for dinner, and to set her place at the table. He found Hermione throwing clothes around her new room. She had taken one of her bags, and dumped it out on the floor.
He stood behind her trying very hard not to laugh out hysterically. She was throwing a fit. A three year olds temper tantrum couldn't hold a candle to this. She was talking to herself, buzzing around like a bee. Setting things on the dresser, hanging up robes on the four-poster in the center of the room. She opened the bathroom door, and dumped a satchel out into the sink. This time, he could not suppress his mirth, and she turned towards him, eyes flashing red. "Does this look lived in, Professor?" Her voice was dripping with sarcasm, she was nearly out of breath from her ranting and raving.
"Actually, I bet Octavos and Alexander would be impressed. You have managed to demolish a room in less time then it takes both of them. A new record I suppose." He still was laughing and he reached up to brush back a loose tendril that had fallen in her face during her rage.
"Don't get cute with me Sev-er-us." She knew he was amused at her, and that only fumed her more. He stood in the doorway looking at her, smiling like a madman. She didn't see anything humorous about her anger. She wanted everyone to just understand that they loved each other and leave it at that. She didn't want to be scrutinized for everything she did over the next week. She just wanted to be herself. And knowing how they felt about Severus, she would be on pins and needles the entire time.
"Come on, let's go for a swim. It will help cool that temper of yours. Besides, I'm looking forward to seeing that little bikini you bought."
"How did you know that I bought a bikini?"
"Harry and I discussed your shopping trip at the party the other night. He also told me about the lingerie you bought. I'm a bit disappointed that you haven't shown it to me yet either. Saving up the goodies for last are you?"
"So that's what you were smiling about at the bar? I wondered. And no, I'm not saving the goodies for last. If you could keep your hands off of me for at least an hour, maybe I would have the time to put it on." She smiled at him and he just nodded in agreement. She obviously had gotten over her tantrum and she found herself swimming in his pool a few moments later. He led her down a long corridor on the first floor, explaining what each room was. She tried to remember them all, but she couldn't. There were simply too many. He led her down another corridor and at the end was a pair of sliding glass doors. She stepped out into a beautiful rose garden. She followed him down a brick path and on to the patio where the pool was. It was enormous. She'd never swam in something so big. It was kidney shaped, with a shallow and a deep end. There was a diving board for children and one for adults. Beyond the pool was a gazebo and a lake. She had no idea his estate was this big, nor that Severus enjoyed all that it had to offer. If it were her home, she'd stay there year round. She never wanted to leave as it was.
They swam all afternoon. Hermione was glad she listened to Harry about the swimsuit. She'd never seen more lust in Severus' eyes. He wore a plain pair of black swimming trunks. She decided he was in desperate need of new clothes. Something with a bit more color. They enjoyed the afternoon swimming and playing in the pool. They took turns showing off on the diving board. Hermione was having so much fun that when Dinky announced ninety minutes until dinner, she was sad that it had to end. They agreed to swim the following afternoon, and headed in to clean up. They each went to their respective rooms, showered and dressed.
When Hermione emerged from the bathroom, she found an elegant gown lying on the bed. It mimicked a dress from the Medieval period. It was a short-sleeved, burgundy, floor-length gown. It looked like something you would see in Ever After or Man In The Iron Mask. The cotton white underlay helped protrude the floral pattern imbedded in the gown. It laced across the chest, accenting her sensual breasts. She found a pair of white slippers beneath the gown, and braided her hair so that it hung neatly down her back. When she looked in the mirror, she could hardly believe it was her looking back. You've really outdone yourself this time Severus. She put on a very fine layer of makeup finishing her look.
Severus was breathless as he watched her cascading down the double staircase. He'd never seen her more beautiful. The other evening didn't even compare to the beauty that stood before him. He was very glad he chose a loose fitting pair of trousers. If he hadn't, his erection would be in plain sight for everyone to see. "Hermione, I'm speechless. Words cannot describe what I see before me. I never want to forget how exquisite you look this very moment."
"It's gorgeous, Severus. I don't know what to say."
"You're gorgeous Hermione. The dress pales in comparison to your beautiful face." She felt a tear well up in her eye, and Severus brushed her lips with a soft delicate kiss. When his tongue was just invading her mouth, he heard Dinky announce his mother's arrival. Her carriage was just pulling up in fr
"Be yourself my dear. Be yourself."
"I shall try Severus. That's all I can do. How should I greet her?"
"By Mrs. Snape unless she tells you otherwise. Now come on dear." He took her hand in his, and he felt how sweaty her palm was. She clearly was a nervous wreck. They exited the door to find his mother waiting patiently inside her carriage. Severus led Hermione down the walk, then helped his mother out of the carriage.
"Hello Mother. It's wonderful to see you again." He embraced her in a hug, and proceeded to kiss each cheek.
"Severus. And you must be Hermione." She was a very tall woman, at least three inches taller than Hermione's 5'7" frame. She wasn't as lean as she was in her portrait that hung in the parlor, but she'd not gotten fat either. She had her hair pulled back into a severe bun that made Hermione think of Minerva. Her eyes and hair were as black as Severus' and she was just as pale. Hermione realized he looked more like his mother than she thought. She wore no makeup, but had blood red lips. They matched the dress beneath her black robes. All in all, she looked very intimidating. Hermione was glad that Severus had told her what to expect. Prisca took her hand and Hermione bowed to her. It seemed the logical thing to do. Severus suppressed the bit of laughter that crept to his mouth. You would have thought Hermione was meeting the Queen of England by the way she bowed.
"That's not necessary dear. Stand up please. Let me get a good look at you." Hermione stood as she was instructed, and Prisca circled her, staring at every inch of her body. "Very nice frame dear. And you have very nice hips. Your skin is a little too tan, but that is to be expected during the summer. My son has extraordinary taste wouldn't you agree?"
Hermione was a bit apprehensive, to toot her own horn, so to speak. But nevertheless, she didn't back down and firmly stood her ground. "Yes he does. Exquisite taste." Severus wasn't the least bit surprised by her answer. He knew how confident she was.
"Well, shall we go inside? It's terribly humid out here." She pushed past Severus, and he and Hermione followed. He whispered "so good so far" to her as he shut the door behind her.
Once inside, Prisca continued her inspection of Hermione. Severus offered her dinner, but she politely refused.
"I'm nearly sick from the long journey. However, I'd like a glass of brandy, or gin. Whichever you have."
Severus made his way over to the liquor cabinet, and op the the doors. There was every type of liquor imaginable in there. "I have both Mother. You know that."
"Well, Scotch it is then." Hermione thought she'd missed something, but when Prisca went to the bathroom to freshen up a bit, he told her that she often played these trivial games with him.
"She's not nutters, but I'm beginning to wonder if she isn't heading down that path." He finished pouring them all a drink, and embraced Hermione in a passionate kiss. His mother returned from the restroom but didn't disturb them. She was watching Hermione and Severus intently trying to unravel their relationship. When Severus had written to tell her that he'd been dating someone, she was both elated and apprehensive at first. He'd merely said he'd found someone he could enjoy is life with. Someone whom with he had many things in common. He never told her of her age or profession or her heritage for that matter. Only that her name was Hermione Granger and she was the cleverest witch in a century.
She was impressed with Severus' opinion of her and it must be true if he felt this strongly for her. She immediately knew she was muggle born and wondered why Severus had been attracted to her. She clearly was beautiful and had impeccable taste since she was attracted to her dashing son. Watching , th, there was no doubt that they were in love. She'd never seen that look in her son's eyes before. He truly felt love and contentment and she was happy for him. However, she wasn't thrilled with the idea a mere muggle born had been able to capture his heart. It annoyed her. She couldn't figure out why he hadn't fallen in love with a pureblooded witch such as herself. Their eyes spoke volumes of how deeply they cared for each other. There was no question about that. She had to find out for herself why Severus desired her. He had to be considering marriage. Because he never would have invited her here knowing she would be coming to visit during their stay here. He clearly was seeking her opinion and her approval of Hermione. She would test her abilities and her love for Severus throughout the next few days. She realized there was no better time than the present, so she started in on her.
"Excuse me. Am I interrupting something?"
"Oh, no Mother. I was just snowing Hermione again what I feel for her. That's all." He released her and handed her the drink he'd poured for her.
"Oh, is that my drink?"
"Yes it is. Please have a seat." He motioned to the chair by the sofa, but instead she sat on the sofa itself so Hermione couldn't sit with Severus. Hermione paid no attention to her actions, and sat down in the chair directly opposite her.
"So, tell me my dear. How did you meet Severus."
"I met him at Hogwarts." Severus loved her vague answer and was very pleased at how well she was handling his mother's inquisitions.
"Oh. And tell me how old are you dear?"
"I'll be twenty-three in September."
"So, you must have been a student of Severus' no doubt. You're nearly twenty years younger than he."
"Yes I was his student at one time. But neither of us acted upon our feelings for one another until I took my position at Hogwarts."
"Ah, and what position is that?"
"I am the librarian." Severus knew his mother would ridicule her chosen profession, stating that she was clearly uncertain of her magical abilities.
"Hermione is very capable of any position that Hogwarts has to offer. It only suits her well to be the librarian. She had read more books than even I have." He knew that would shut his mother up about her profession. He had been an avid reader since the age of five.
"Oh. And if another position were to be available, which one would you choose?"
Hermione wasn't really sure what position she longed for. It was a toss up between Muggle Studies and Charms. "I'd be pleased at either Charms or Muggle Studies. Being a muggle born does have it's advantages in that department." One point for Hermione, Severus thought to himself. Way to go dear.
"As I mentioned earlier, you are a bit younger than Severus. Tell me, isn't there a wizard closer to your age that you find suits your needs?"
"I have learned from Severus that love knows no age, nor has no boundaries. And to answer your question, no there aren't any wizards that can satisfy my needs quite like Severus can." He nearly spat out his Scotch at her answer. Another point for Hermione, he thought again. She was really giving his mother back just as much as she was giving her. He was rather enjoying the moment.
"I see. And tell me Severus, what are her needs?"
"I don't see where our intimacy is an interest of yours, nor is it any of your business." He downed his drink and quickly poured himself another. His voice was as cold and as spiteful as Hermione remembered him being whilst still a student.
"Does she fulfill your needs Severus?"
"More than she'll ever know." Hermione cast him a warm smile and he returned by kissing her hand. His mother went for a more drastic measure trying to break her.
"Tell me Hermione. It is very clear to me that you are a muggle born. What exactly have you done to prove yourself in our world? Severus comes from nothing but pureblooded witches and wizards."
"I'm well aware of Severus' bloodline. As far as proving myself, I graduated with the highest marks Hogwarts has seen in a century." Hermione had no idea his mother had gone to Hogwarts and had also been at the top of her class. Yet another point my dear. "I also scored highest on my N.E.W.T.'s and I passed both my apparition test and my licensing for animagus the first time. Would you care to see my form?"
"That won't be necessary. I am curious though. What is your form?"
Hermione hesitated because she and Severus had never discussed animagi. "I turn into a silver fox."
"Isn't that your form also?" He knew she had no idea he was a registered animagus. He had seen her name on the registered list, and had been surprised at her choice of form. However, he knew the form chose you just as the wand chooses the wizard. He knew once he answered she would realize it had been him in the Forbidden Forest almost five years ago.
"Yes it is mother." Her heart skipped a beat as she heard his reply. She realized it had to have been him she played with once she perfected her transformation. She'd escaped the school and celebrated a bit on her own. Remus had been there in the forest that night. She'd sensed him. She also knew there was another fox in there as well. She prayed it was him. It just had to be.
"What are your markings Severus? And your color?" He was a bit apprehensive about telling her because he knew they had seen each other and spent time together in her seventh year. She had no idea it was him, and he didn't know for sure it was her until she answered with her form.
"Raven of course. And I have a bit of silver around my muzzle, and also a touch of silver on the tip of my tail." He knew she would remember the night they spent together in the Forbidden Forest. He'd been there with Remus trying to comfort him because Sirius was unable to be there due to his trial. On his way back, he caught a glimpse of something silver as it ran to the lake. He followed and soon found himself muzzle to muzzle with a female silver fox. They spent the night frolicking and playing. He woke the next morning the female long gone and a whimper of sadness could be heard throughout the grounds at Hogwarts. He had known it was another animagus, but wasn't for sure it was her until now. She simply realized they were destined for one another. There were so many signs that she couldn't ignore. This was just another to add to the already long list.
"It was you, in the forest that night. Wasn't it?" Her voice trembled as she spoke.
"Yes it was. I didn't realize it was you until now. I guess I knew all along once I registered my markings and form, but a part of me couldn't believe it until you told me. Oh, Hermione. It is destined to be isn't it?"
She peered up into his dark eyes and merely nodded. "I suppose it is." She had fought so hard for those words to come out of her mouth. It was amazing that their animagus forms knew they belonged together way before they even knew. She hadn't transformed since that night, and only thought she would when it was absolutely necessary. Fortunately, she hadn't needed to since then.
His mother knew they had bonded even closer and just wanted to push her a bit farther. "You are aware that no one in our family has ever married a muggle born aren't you?" Severus knew she had done it. She had pushed the wrong button with her. Anytime she was to see the Hermione Severus never wanted her to see. But she had asked for it. She had pushed too far and it was only her fault if Hermione exploded in her face.
Hermione had clearly lost her patience, and the look in her eyes told Severus to prepare for an eruption. She downed the rest of her drink, stood, and walked over to Severus. "I wasn't entirely sure, but I guess I should have known. Please excuse me. I am famished and wish to eat my dinner. I seriously doubt I will be returning this evening."
Severus reached for her hand and she pulled away from him. "Please Hermione, don't go."
"Prisca, it has been an interesting and enlightening evening. I do hope we will have the chance to chat again before you leave. I shall see you tomorrow at breakfast. And as for you Severus," she leaned down and tugged a bit on the collar of shirt, "I shall see you in bed." She strode off as if she was the almighty Merlin herself.
Severus dropped his glass, shattering it in a million pieces. She had completely dumbfounded him. However, he should have seen it coming. The way his mother was treating her was despicable. She'd worked very hard since she first came to Hogwarts to overcome the prejudices against her. Her last remark, however sent a chill like no other down his spine. She could be as cunning and as Slytherin as he himself sometimes. It was a very frightening and a very exciting thought all at the same time. Overall, he was very impressed with her. He'd have to reward her appropriately in private.
"She's not going to your room is she?"
"Apparently so." He was furious at his mother for making her storm out of there. "Mother, why in the hell did you do that to her? She's overcome so many things in her life just trying to fit in. Please don't ruin the first bit of happiness I have had in my life in years." He summoned another glass and poured himself another drink as he saw Dinky head upstairs with her tray. She was eating in his room. No doubt trying to make sure she didn't see his Mother until the morning.
"Severus, I wasn't trying to hurt you. I just want you to know exactly what you're getting yourself into. Your father wouldn't be proud. Not in the least bit." She readjusted herself making sure he saw how unhappy she was with him.
"Since when did I ever give a damn about what he thought? Hmmm? And since when did you give a damn what he thought either?" He slammed his glass down onto the table, shattering yet another. Hermione heard the noise upstairs, but decided against going down to investigate. She was perfectly fine sitting there eating her dinner in private. The last place in the world she wanted to be was with that woman.
"I'm merely saying don't forget about what the other family members will say or think."
"Mother, honestly answer me this. Do you truly think I give a damn about what anyone else thinks? I could care less. Those people aren't as innocent as they appear. They have far many more skeletons in the closet than I do. I can assure you of that. And also, I love Hermione no matter what she was born. She is a witch now and forever will be. Even if I'd met her in the streets of London I know I still would have fallen for her. How could I not?"
His mother began fidgeting with her robes and he knew he'd struck a nerve. "And besides. Father and you were never in love, and probably only slept together the night Valeria and I were conceived. I am truly in love with her and there isn't anything I can do but embrace it with both hands and pray to the heavens I don't get burned. And I won't. I feel it in my heart. What was dead for so long is now alive and stronger than ever. I couldn't leave her if I tried. There's no place in this world for me if Hermione isn't by my side. I know that. I can feel that."
"Very nice speech Severus. Maybe you should go and tell her that. Maybe she will forgive you for my stupidity." He nearly spat his drink again for the second time that evening. His mother was apologizing in her own twisted sort of way. He couldn't believe it. She never apologized for anything. This only led to confirm his suspicions of her going nutters.
"Well, regardless of what you or Valeria think I know I want to spend the rest of my life with her. My eternity with her. She is all I need. All I want. And definitely all I desire."
His mother reached over and put a loving hand on his. It was the first time in years he'd felt love radiating off of her. "I've raised a rather intelligent man, haven't I? You're loving, compassionate and caring. What happened to change you Severus?"
"Hermione changed me. And thank Merlin she wasn't too late. Now, I shall see you in the morning as well. And Mother, please don't forget to change your tone with her. I'd hate to see my own mother hexed by my lover."
There were no more incidents between them for the rest of her stay. When Valeria arrived, Hermione was eager to fly into her just as hard as Prisca had flown into her. But, Valeria proved to be a delightful ally. She knew how her mother was and didn't give a damn about tarnishing the family name. She had done that long ago. No one ever divorced in their family either. Hermione supposed that was why his father and mother never were together. They simply didn't love each other and they probably only had slept together the two times that resulted in conception of Severus and Valeria.
She'd tested Hermione's abilities a bit on a few things and even tried to get them to both drink a bit of Veritaserum. They both agreed not to drink the liquid. Some things were very private between them and they didn't want a single soul to know them. When Sunday evening rolled around, Hermione was relieved that Prisca was leaving, but a bit sad that Valeria was going also. She had grown very fond of her during the four days she was there. Valeria promised to write to them both more often and even told them she'd like to visit again at Christmas if she had time. When Prisca was saying goodbye to Severus, she did something no one ever would have expected of her. She grabbed Hermione and hugged her so tightly she barely could breathe.
"Hermione I will tell you this only once so please listen well. Severus is the only son I have, and I do not wish to see him hurt. I however, am sorry for my mistreatment of you and hope in time you will forgive me. Someday you may have a son of your own, and then you will sympathize with me. It isn't hard letting go, and it won't get easier as they age either. I do know that you make my son very happy and if he chooses so, I shall be honored to call you my daughter-in-law. Muggle heritage or not. You are a very capable and talented witch as well as a very kind human being. I shall look forward to welcoming you into our family."
Severus was so surprised that when Hermione began crying, he didn't even notice. She waved bye to the carriage that hauled her and Valeria off to Rome. It wasn't until they were almost completely out of sight that he began to wave and say goodbye. "Come on dear. I have a desperate need to devour you whole if you are game?"
"Yes I am but not like this. Let's try something a bit different." Within a few seconds, a stunning silver fox stood where Hermione had once been. Severus repeated her transformation and the two foxes ran all over his estate playing until the wee hours of the morning. They transformed back into their natural forms and headed inside for a peaceful nights sleep. It had been a week since either one had actually slept entirely through the night, and they were both looking forward to it.
As they lay in bed, Severus realized there was something he had to do. He had to ask Hermione to marry him. It was the only thing he'd thought about since she arrived, and he couldn't torment himself any longer. He prayed she'd say yes. She simply had to. It would kill him instantly if she said no. They'd only been together for six short weeks, but it felt right. He wasn't getting any younger and neither was she. They were both responsible adults, perhaps a bit too responsible sometimes. But that responsibility led him to believe that they would be able to make an intelligent decision where their future was concerned.
He thought of how he would go about it, and after an hour of planning and scheming, he had come up with the best idea he'd ever thought of in his entire life. He'd ask her at Harry's birthday party. That way, no one could ever say she truly didn't love him, nor that he didn't love her. Everyone they were close to would surely be there, and there wouldn't be a more perfect time. He snuggled in closer, burying his head in her silky smooth curls. He would never tire of holding her. It was a feeling he never would get used to. The feeling of being totally and completely loved by someone. It almost brought tears to his eyes. Almost.
