Chapter 5: Exams
and Excursions
The days slipped into
weeks and the status quo seemed to be restored. Hermione focussed on
working hard and attending to her head girl duties. The dreams
stopped and her friendships seemed healthy again. She couldn't help
noticing subtle changes as the weeks went by though. Harry and Ginny
got less clingy as they both had increasing amounts of work to do.
There was a distinct level of relief on Ron's part at the decrease in
public displays of affection. Hermione saw the most change in Ron,
she speculated that it was the amount of work he had to do and some
serious contemplation on his part about the future. He became
gradually more withdrawn and quiet and was working harder than she
had ever known him to in the past, and he didn't complain about his
lessons, teachers or homework. She guessed that Ron might be feeling
left out a bit too, he didn't spend much time with Harry these days,
he was usually working or with Ginny, they really only saw each other
in shared lessons, at meals and at quidditch, but of course Ginny was
always at meals and quidditch too. Hermione tried not to worry about
Ron, she didn't want to bring anything up with him in case it pissed
him off and she had a feeling he was, or at least would be ok.
The end of term was
rapidly approaching, which meant one thing for the seventh year; mock
exams. Some people weren't too worried about them, for Hermione
though, they were crucial. They would determine just how much work
she had to do in order to get the marks she wanted in the real thing.
Harry and Ron were taking them pretty seriously too. The three of
them spent long evenings in the library, each with a pile of books
and notes from the last year. Hermione was happy to quiz the other
two by springing random questions on them throughout the study
sessions and any other time they were together. She also spent time
with Justin, who was also taking arithmancy, revising their common
subject and occasionally digressing into lively discussion about
their leaving party.
In the final week of term
classes were suspended for their year and the Great Hall became the
focus of everyone's attention. The first exam of Monday morning was
Charms, Harry and Hermione lingered in the entrance hall after
breakfast, nervously waiting for the great hall to be rearranged. Ron
only stuck around for a minute to wish them luck before vanishing up
to the library to revise for his Care of Magical Creatures exam in
the afternoon. When he returned to the great hall for lunch, he found
a happy and relieved pair of friends waiting for him, chatting
animatedly about the unexpected ease of their exam.
"There's only one
explanation, Harry, we must have prepared the right things."
"Bit hard not to, we
prepared for anything! Hi Ron. You all ready for our next exam?"
Ron nodded and exhaled heavily. The three of them went in to lunch.
There was a strong buzz in the air, nerves filled the hall from the
seventh years and everyone else was excited about the end of term.
The week continued in a
similar vein. The three friends had Transfiguration and Defence
Against the Dark Arts together, Harry struggled through his Potions
exam and Hermione seemed to feel Arithmancy and History of Magic went
well. Finally the end of term feast was upon them and the castle felt
warm with anticipation. Harry and Ron talked excitedly about spending
another holiday together, dragging Hermione's mood down.
"I wish I was coming
with you." She muttered.
"Well why don't you?
I know mum won't mind. You don't have to stay here." Ron
protested.
"I know. But I told
my parents that I was staying here, if I change my plans and go to
your house they'd be upset. Besides, I want to take advantage of the
library being quiet, I feel like I've got loads of reading to do and
my notes all need sorting out." Ron rolled his eyes but remained
quiet, deciding it was best to drop the issue. Hermione wasn't sure
what was keeping her from going to stay with Ron's family for the
holidays, something inside told her it wouldn't be wise. Harry and
Ginny were bound to be all couply and much as she didn't want to
abandon Ron in the face of that, she felt it would be weird for the
two of them, especially with Ron's quieter mood lately. She liked the
castle at Christmas, anyway, it was peaceful. As they left the hall
after another magnificent feast, Hermione dropped back to let a group
of Ravenclaws through the doors first, as she slowly made her way
towards the stairs with the crowd she was aware of some pushing and
surging behind her. Suddenly she felt a jolt at her side, she was
knocked sideways out of the flow of students. She whipped around to
see a smug looking Malfoy flanked, as usual by Crabb and Goyle.
"That's right,
Granger, get out of the way." He snarled, "Pure bloods
first." Crabb and Goyle laughed and the three of them continued
shoving their way through the crowd. Hermione rubbed her shoulder and
went on her way, annoyed, but not surprised by their behaviour.
The following morning
Hermione awoke to the sounds of people getting ready to leave. She
hurriedly got dressed and went down to the common room where she
found Ron sat on his trunk eating a slice of toast.
"Morning." She
said, a little too brightly. Ron smiled weakly. "Where's Harry?"
Ron pointed to the portrait hole.
"Still at breakfast,
with Gin."
"Oh. I didn't mean
to oversleep. I would have been at breakfast with you. Sorry."
"S'alright."
Ron dusted the crumbs off his hands and lap. "Hermione?"
There was a strange croak in his voice as he looked around at the few
people lingering and passing through the common room, he stood up and
moved closer to her. "I'll, erm, I'll miss you over Christmas."
Hermione was taken aback by this, and it must have shown in her face
because he quickly turned around and began fiddling with his trunk.
She could see the backs of his ears glowing red and knew his whole
face looked like a beetroot. She smiled and put her hand on his
shoulder, giving it a quick squeeze, before backing away. Just at
that moment the portrait swung open and Harry and Ginny stepped in,
both Ron and Hermione breathed a sigh of relief.
"Bad news Hermione."
Harry sighed on seeing her, "Malfoy's staying too."
"Oh I'll cope. I'll
probably hardly see him." Hermione said, waving a hand in the
air dismissively. Something clunked in her stomach though and she
didn't really believe it herself.
It was a busy morning.
Hermione went down to Hogsmeade station with her friends to wave them
off with Hagrid and afterwards walked back to the castle alone, as
Hagrid had errands to run in the village. It was cold and she had her
cloak and scarf pulled tight around her. She got up to the front
doors before deciding that she really just wanted to keep walking, so
she set off towards the lake. She thought about Ron and frowned,
she'd felt those moments of odd tension between them over the years
and now she finally had to admit to it. Ron liked her as more than a
friend. She sat down at the edge of the lake and went over every
occasion she could think of where one of them had said or done
something that sparked a weird atmosphere for a few seconds and
realised she'd never wanted to admit it before, but she had always
known how he felt. Frustrated, she kicked at the ground and stood up
to go. As she turned she caught a glimpse of platinum blonde hair
disappear into the forest, intrigued, she trotted over and slipped
between the trees. She could hear footsteps and the unmistakeable
giggles of a girl, so, keeping a discrete distance she followed very
quietly until all noise stopped suddenly. She skirted around to the
right, towards a thick clump of undergrowth. Through the misty,
dappled light she could make out Malfoy and a girl she recognised as
a sixth year Slytherin.
Carefully, she moved
closer so she could see through the bushes, and watched the couple
kissing passionately. Malfoy backed the girl up against a huge oak
tree and began groping her left breast through her robe. For a second
Hermione looked away and considered making a run for it, she didn't
want to see this, but she couldn't keep her eyes away, and she was
rooted to the spot. Malfoy had his hand under the girl's robes now
and was ravishing her neck. He pulled her robes off, at which she
squealed in reaction to the cold, but he smothered her mouth with
his. After a few minutes of this he pushed her to the ground and
pulled her head to his groin, his hands in her hair, she put her
hands on his hips and eagerly wrapped her lips around his rock hard
cock. He moved her head for her, as she looked up at him, her eyes
wide. She stopped just as his heavy breathing indicated he was ready
to come and he grabbed her arm, yanking her back to her feet. Her
reached under her short skirt and pulled down her knickers, which she
kicked off her feet and readily wrapped her right leg up around his
hips and tilted her left leg out to the side. He lifted her and
pushed himself inside. Hermione gasped and quickly put a knuckle in
her mouth, while forcefully squeezing her own breast with her other
hand. The girl groaned with pleasure as Malfoy thrust into her, all
kissing halted, he pinned her hands over her head as he pounded away
at her. The girl's excited moans threatened to become screams of
pleasure and Malfoy quickly put his spare hand over mouth, he went
harder and faster pounding rhythmically until he finally let out a
cry of his own as he exploded inside her. He gave a single thrust as
he finished off completely and then quickly pulled out and stepped
back. Hermione could see his dick glistening with both his juice and
hers and a quick glance back at the exhausted girl revealed his cum
dripping down her inner thigh. Malfoy tidied himself up, and without
a word turned heel and set off back to the castle, leaving the girl
panting for more and too tired to move. Hermione quietened her
breathing and carefully moved away, not wanting to be heard even at
this stage.
She got back to her empty
dormitory and flopped onto the bed, images swirling in her head. She
gave in and slipped a hand down to meet her moist lips and relieved
herself with force she didn't know she possessed, until she could no
longer feel her fingers and had no more breath in her to groan his
name to the canopy over her bed.
