- St. Mungo’s, one week later
Ginny tiptoed into Harry’s room only to find it empty. She turned on her heels, walked back into the hallway and grabbed the first Mediwitch that passed by the arm. “Where’s Harry?” she demanded.
“Harry?”
“Yeah, Harry. Harry Potter?”
Before the Mediwitch could answer her, Ginny heard Harry’s voice from behind her. “Hello there! Care for a Lemon Drop? They’ll make you feel better!”
Ginny gasped. She didn’t think Hermione would lie to her, but at the same time, she hadn’t wanted to believe it. “Oh, Harry,” she whispered. Ginny turned around to see Harry waving a small, open tin under the nose of Mrs. Longbottom. “Harry, no! Leave her alone!” Ginny called out and ran over to him. She took his arm and started to lead him away from Neville’s mother.
“Hello, Ginny! I’m helping! Can’t you see?” he greeted her cheerfully.
“Oh, Harry...” A tear slipped down Ginny’s cheek. “I think I need to lie down.”
“Are you sick? Have a Lemon Drop.” He smiled brightly at her. “It’ll help!”
Ginny nodded weakly and took one, saying sadly. “Alright, Harry. I’ll take one. I’ll eat it if we can go back to your room...okay?”
Harry nodded again. “Alright, Ginny.” As she popped the candy into her mouth, he took her hand and practically skipped back to his room.
Ginny followed, rather subdued. When they reached the sterile, white room, she sat on the bed. “Harry...” she whispered softly. “Tell me what’s wrong...please...”
“Nothing’s wrong, Ginny!” He chirped. “Had a Lemon Drop not too long ago and all! The Headmaster keeps sending me more, don’t you know? Deuced nice of him, don’t you think?”
“I...that is...” she faltered. “Oh, Harry...” She threw her arms around his neck and began crying in earnest.
Harry became agitated rather quickly. “No, Ginny, you can’t be sad! You’ve had a Lemon Drop!” He groped around in his pocket for the tin, than shoved it at her, saying desperately. “Here, have another!”
She shook her head, crying harder then before. “Harry...don’t you see? Lemon Drops don’t help! They don’t make things better! Please, talk to me about Sirius...about Cedric...about Tom... please...” She grabbed his arms, shaking him slightly.
He recoiled from her and hissed nastily. “You’re a liar! Lemon Drops do help!” He scrambled backwards, away from her, calling loudly. “Get her out of here! She’s lying! The Lemon Drops help! Nothing is wrong, because I have my LEMON DROPS!!!”
The Mediwitch Ginny had grabbed in the hallway moments before rushed into the room. “Harry, dear, what’s all the fuss about? Is your tin empty again?”
Harry shook his head and pointed at Ginny accusingly. “She said my Lemon Drops aren’t helping!”
The Mediwitch turned to scowl at Ginny. “Young lady, you simply cannot be in here if you’re going to upset my patients! I have no trouble with this one normally, please leave if you’re going to distress him!”
Ginny gaped at the blonde witch. “You can’t be serious!” she gasped. “You are feeding his delusions?”
The witch shook her head and began ushering Ginny out. “I am the mediwitch, not you. I know how to do my job, child. Young Harry will be fine, I assure you. Goodbye.” With that, she pushed Ginny out of Harry’s room and shut the door in her face.
Ginny could hear the witch soothing Harry with talk of his precious Lemon Drops through the door. “They’re all a bunch of loons...” she marveled. “Every last one of them...” She shook her head and walked dazedly back to the Visitors’ Tearoom to find Ron and Hermione.
