Two roads diverged
in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could
not travel both
And be one
traveler, long I stood
And looked down
one as far as I could
To where it bent

Part I: Summer of
Change
Chapter 4
Narcissa Malfoy loved her
Conservatory almost as much as she loved her Solarium, both brought peace and a
quiet joy to her life. They were also the only two places within the Manor that
were exclusively hers, where no one dared step without her express invitation.
It was here to her Conservatory that she had retreated after her talk with
Draco. The revelation of so many secrets had dredged up a windfall of memories,
some so achingly precious and beautiful they had left a persistent throb of
anguish in her heart, while others were so painful that she had shied
skittishly away from them lest they pull her down into dark depression.
So, she had retreated, no, more like fled to this place of
solace where she could play her music and let the ivory keys ease her
heartache. And oh, how Narcissa loved to play the piano, loved to create music to
reflect the rhyme and cadence of her inner being. To
lose herself for hours in a symphony of notes, blending perfectly, merging into
one another effortlessly, a flawless dance of hands and keys building to a
climax, cresting the wave only to build again, graceful and powerful; it made
her feel so alive. When sometimes, most of the time, she felt so empty
and numb inside, like a forgotten wasteland, parched and desolate. Her sole spots of joy and brightness her
beloved little dragon and her music.
Letting her mind wander where it
may, Narcissa’s fingers traipsed lightly over her
ivory keys, almost playful as memories of childhood innocence and long ago
happiness flowed freely and filled the air with upbeat tempo and whimsical
flare. She could almost hear the giggles and laughter of days gone by, could
recall in vivid detail impish grins and faces flushed with high spirits, could
feel remembered camaraderie once believed to be boundless. It had all been so
wondrous how much more family they had been than the one she had by blood. Lil and Tuni much more her sisters than the mean spirited Bella and
the oft indifferent Meda; Siri,
Luc, Remy, Sev, and Jimmy brothers to share in the
adventure.
However, as oft happened, bright
and beautiful memory bled into the darker times to come. The splintering of
friendship under the angst of teenage melodrama, misunderstandings and
deliberate misdirection, and an inescapable evil that invaded like the foulest
malignancy. Narcissa felt her fingers stumble on a
cacophonic beat, loss of harmony and rhythm as painful remembrance caused her
to falter off-key, to lose the once graceful blending of one note into another,
chords now gone dissonant. Tempo,
melody, harmony all at war with one another, creating an aura of discontent,
light dimmed, dampened, wrenched down into darkness.
Narcissa lost all sense of time and place as she became ensnared
in the landscape of her mind, her fingers playing through her travails of
reminiscence. And then she stumbled upon
bittersweet recollection, poignant in the face of what was to come, the last
time she had seen her sweet Lil alive…
***Turning, Narcissa looked
over the room with a critical eye. Everything had to be perfect for it had been
ages and ages since she had last seen Lil and Tuni and who knew when they would again be able to get away
undetected. Walking over to the table under the front window, she rearranged
the pretty little yellow flowers that had brought them together in the first
place. Next she checked the fire burning merrily in the fireplace and
straightened the pictures adorning the mantel.
This was their private little cottage in the wood where they could
escape to plan and share or sometimes to just be. The boys had their silly
Marauder’s Den from which to dream up their childish pranks, while the girls
had their Retreat of Whimsy. And unlike the boys, they had managed to keep
their private getaway just that, private and secret.
‘Which, unfortunately, was very much a
necessity in the dark times they now lived.’ Sighing somewhat fitfully, Narcissa pushed the troubling thought down and instead
concentrated on the long awaited reunion that was to take place
momentarily. A bubbling sense of jubilation
swept through her at the wonderful and exciting news she had to share with her
dear sisters.
“If they would only get here already,” Narcissa mumbled petulantly, tired of waiting and waiting
and waiting for Lil
and Tuni to arrive.
“Well Nari,” a humor filled
voice spoke up behind her, “If you’d only turn around you’d see that one of us has arrived already.”
Whirling around Narcissa
brought her hands to her face and squealed, “Lil!”
And Lily squealed right back, “Nari!”
And then they were both racing across the room to meet in
the middle in a tangle of hugs and kisses and “It’s been ages!” and “Let’s not
let so much time go by!” and “I’ve missed you terribly so!” Only to finally
pull away a little to really get a look at each other and take in the changes
one sees after long separation.
“Oh gods Lil,” Narcissa whispered through choked emotion, “You look
absolutely splendid.”
“While you have become even more beautiful than ever
before Nari.” Lily smiled impishly.
“Oh enough already come and tell me how you’ve been while
we wait for Tuni.” Narcissa
pulled Lily over to the sofa upon which they both descended ready to dish the
dirt and what not.
“You mean if that wretched man she married ever lets her
out of his sight.” Lily grumbled. She
had taken an instant dislike to Vernon Dursley, he
had mean eyes and he made her insides clench in fear at the thought of her baby
sister being anywhere near the miserly bastard.
“That bad?” Narcissa had
never actually met the man Tuni had married, but from
the letters Lil had sent he seemed to be a rather
mean-spirited man. Not at all the kind of man she would have expected sweet
little Tuni to end up with.
“You’ve no idea Lil, I only met
him once, but believe me once was more then enough.”
“Well, I hope she gets here soon, else I’ll start to worr-,” Narcissa cut off as she gasped
in shock, “Sweet Merciful Merlin!” Standing she couldn’t quite grasp what her
eyes beheld.
“What!” Lily cried out and then she too gasped, “Gods
would you look at her!”
“Uh, sorry I’m late?” Petunia queried in her soft way.
“Late! Bother that, Merlin Tuni are you mad!”
“Yes, you shouldn’t be traipsing about in your condition,
come on sit, put your feet up”
“Girls-“
“Here’s a pillow Tuni, you
should have a pillow.”
“Girls-“
“Are you thirsty? Here have some
lemonade, or pumpkin juice, we’ve both you know. Which would you rather?”
“Girls, please-“
“Or maybe something to eat, we’ve quite the selection to
choose from. There’s cucumber sandwiches
and watercress of course, or maybe some pudding or pie. You love pie Tuni, or-“
“GIRLS!”
“WHAT!”
“Honestly, they way you two are going on,” Petunia
scowled darkly, “You’d think I was dying or something.”
“But Tuni,” Narcissa
spoke hesitantly, “You- you- you’re-“
“Pregnant.” Lily stated, “And rather largely so.”
“Thanks ever so,” Petunia groused irritably, “And yes, that
is rather obvious! Still, you needn’t
treat me like I was an invalid.”
“You’re quite right Tuni,” Narcissa said as she sank back down onto the sofa and
hugged Petunia. “It’s just something of shock; I guess congratulations are in
order sweetling.”
“Oh, oh my,” Lily gasped suddenly and then burst into a
fit of giggles. “This is just unreal.”
“Lil?”
“Honestly Lily Potter, you find out your baby sister’s
getting ready to pop one out and you figure now is the time for an attack of giggles?!?!”
“No, no, you don’t understand!” Lily tried to get her
giggles under control and explain at the same time, “I was all excited to see
you both and share my news, and then Tuni shows up
the way she did, and it’s all so unreal, and honestly what are the odds, and-
and I’m pregnant too!”
“Oh my goodness Lil!” Petunia cried
out as her sister’s news sank in, “Oh congratulations! You and Jimmy must be
absolutely thrilled!”
“Bloody Hell!”
“Nari!” Both sisters
gasped in shock.
“You’re pregnant,” Narcissa
stated calmly.
“Yes.” Lily replied hesitantly.
“And you’re pregnant,” Again Narcissa
spoke in that calm voice that was starting to get on the sister’s nerves.
“Yes Nari,” Petunia regarded
her friend and wondered if maybe she’d gone a bit soft while they weren’t
looking. “I believe we’ve rather covered that already. As odd as it may seem,
both Lil and I are pregnant.”
“Bloody Hell!”
“You’ve said that already!” Lily glared. This ‘bloody
hell’ business was starting to piss her off.
“Merlin,” Narcissa whispered in
awe, “I was going to tell after we’d caught up a bit, I too am pregnant.”
“Bloody Buggering Hell!”
“Exactly.” ***
“Will Mistress be wanting dinner served?”
“What!” Narcissa
gasped, her fingers clanging on the keys as she was pulled abruptly from her
reverie.
“Please to be excusing me
Mistress,” the little house elf nervously wrung her hands together, “Bimy be asking if Mistress be wanting dinner served.”
“Dinner?” Looking out the window Narcissa
was shocked to see the afternoon had passed well into evening. She must of spent hours lost in memory and
recollection, in playing the piano, to have missed the passage of time.
“Dinner,” she stated again more firmly, “Yes, please inform Lucius
and Draco that dinner will be served at half past.”
She started to turn away but was
again interrupted by the house elf.
“Please Mistress,” Bimy squeaked in alarm, “Master and Young Master be not
here.”
“What do you mean not here,” Narcissa focused her complete attention on the now shaking
house elf.
“M-master a-and Young Master go
to away room a-and g-go a-away,” Bimy stuttered and
ended on a whimper. Mistress was never so mean as Master, but Mistress was
known to have a scary temper.
“When,” Narcissa
struggled to keep her voice calm so as to not scare the house elf into
incoherence, “When did Lucius leave with Draco?”
“M-mistress
and Y-young M-master b-be i-in s-sunny r-room a-and
M-master s-send f-for Y-young M-master a-and M-master t-take Y-young M-master
t-to a-away r-room a-and g-g-go a-a-a-away.”
“No!” Narcissa
cried out in a strangled voice.
“M-m-m-m-“
“That will be all Bimy.” Narcissa shook as she
dismissed the house elf, “Lucius you bastard! What
have you done?”
Barely containing the fear and
rage rolling through her, Narcissa left her
Conservatory and swept through the hallways and passage ways of the Manor until
she reached her destination. Shoving the doors open she paused in the entryway
of Lucius’ sanctuary and found his study empty.
Shaking, she turned and ran to the chamber they used for apparating
and port-keying. Upon arriving she
quickly cast the spell to reveal departures and destinations.
Crying out she sank to the
ground as her worst fear was realized, Lucius had
taken her son, her little dragon, to Voldemort.
To be continued…
The next part will be posted on Sunday.
