Chapter 4: Invisible Men
Three more days passed during
which Draco slipped in and out of consciousness. From what Harry heard, Malfoy was barely
coherent when he was awake, but it was to be expected after the injuries he
endured. Eris never left the infirmary
and Harry took this as a sign that she still wanted some distance between
them. As much as her attachment to
Malfoy bothered him, he tried to be objective.
From the things that Madam Prince said, it seemed that Eris and Draco
had once been friends on a level similar to the relationship he had with Ron
and Hermione. If either one of them was
in this position he would be glued to them in the same way. Still, he was growing impatient for at least
a little more information and he was very curious about this newly discovered
sibling. It was time to break out the
invisibility cloak.
_______________________________________________________________________
“You’re awake again I see,” Eris said softly
as she stood beside Draco’s bed. The
wizard’s grey eyes were unfocused, but he did seem to register her
presence. It was frustrating to watch
him struggle each time he came awake. He
hardly ever even seemed to notice that anyone was in the room with him. The combination of Veritaserum, healing
potions, and the stress of being questioned by the aurors sent Draco back into
a magical coma. Madam Pomfrey had
assured her that it was mostly due to the speed healing, but Eris had her
doubts. She was still very angry that
they had all been so eager to question Draco, even jeopardized his health to
get it done.
Draco blinked rapidly and his gaze
sharpened. He struggled to sit up and
Eris hurried to help him. “Eris, is that
really you? I thought you were a dream
before. You look so different.”
Eris chuckled. “I could say the same about you. Do you remember everything, being
questioned?”
He nodded slowly in response and
Eris moved to sit on the edge of the bed.
“What happened after? How long
have I been out?”
“All together or since the
aurors were here?”
“Since the aurors,”
Draco said softly.
Eris sighed. “It’s been three days. You’ve been awake often enough, but you never
seemed to know we were here and it was never for very long.”
“I could hear you talking to me, but it was
like I was underwater and my body felt too heavy to move.” Draco tried to push himself up higher and
gasped in pain. Eris quickly wrapped her
arms around him and gently pulled him up.
When she tried to move away, she found that she was trapped in her
friend’s arms.
Eris tensed for a moment and tried
to scan the room. Snape was there, but
she could not see him. No one else
seemed to be present. She returned
Draco’s hug and began to rub soothing circles on his back. “Are you all right?”
Her friend took in a deep
shuddering breath. “I missed you so
much. When everything started to fall
apart all I could think of was to get to you.
I knew that was the only way I would be safe.”
“I’m honored that you would think that,” Eris
murmured. She pulled back, letting Draco
slid back to his pillows. “Have things
gotten that bad? Your letters stopped
over a year ago and you we’re starting to sound desperate before then.”
“There was just so much pressure, Eris. You know how my father is and when he was
sent to Azkaban things just got worse.”
Draco closed his eyes and Eris scooted closer to him and brushed his sweat-dampened
locks from his face. “Then I got into
something…something I couldn’t talk to you about. There was nothing you could have done to help
and I was out of options. I’m sorry I
stopped writing, but I just didn’t want you to know how far I had fallen.”
Eris snorted and smiled at her
friend. “Oh yes, Draco, because you were
always such an angel.”
“I could say the same about you,” he said
echoing her words from a bit earlier.
“True, but at least I’m not a spoiled,
arrogant, pureblood prat,” Eris teased.
Draco huffed. “I am not a prat, and you are too spoiled.”
“How about a git then,” Eris asked with a
grin.
“I don’t think so.”
“Tosser?”
“Such language for a well bred girl.” Draco snickered when Eris wrinkled her nose.
She gave him a wicked grin
then. “Well can you deny it if I call
you a…”
“What?”
Draco seemed confused by the sudden stop of her words.
Eris bit her lip. She did not think it would be a good thing to
start spouting off about Draco’s sexual preferences with Snape so close
by. Moreover, she never could know for
certain whom else might be listening.
“Never mind. It was stupid
anyway.”
Her friend’s eyes took on a light
of understanding and then confusion. She
tried to give him a significant look and convey that they were being
watched. “Oh! Well, we can discuss your near indiscretion
later, my dear.”
Eris giggled and lightly swatted
Draco on the arm. “Yes, because I am so
dreadfully afraid of being punished by you.”
Draco’s voice dropped to a low,
seductive purr. “Oh, but you should be,
Eris. There are so many ways that I
could punish you.”
“Draco, stop that,” Eris said in an
exasperated tone. She thought she had
conveyed to him that there were eyes and ears in the room. Of course, she would not put it past him to
try to embarrass her. “What would people
think if they heard you taking like that?”
The blond chuckled. “They would assume that the only reason you
remained glued to my bedside through all of this was so that we could commence
shagging like rabbits as soon as I was fit.”
A deep crimson blush spread up
Eris’ neck to paint her cheeks. What was
Snape going to think? “You are
horrible! Honestly, Draco, nearly ten
years without seeing one another face-to-face and this is how you behave. Besides, we both know that I am not your
type.”
Draco took on an air of
penitence. He grasped he hand and pulled
it to his lips for a swift kiss.
“Forgive me, fair maiden, if I have offended your delicate
sensibilities. Your beauty has addled my
mind and I can not help but attempt to woo you.”
Eris rolled her eyes and stood up
from the bed. “Oh, your mind is addled
all right. I am going to go talk to
Felicity so we can bring you back to the manor.
Do try to behave in front of her so that I don’t end up wearing a
chastity belt or some other such nonsense.
I would hate to have to explain that to actual interested parties.”
With that, Eris turned to sweep
out of the hospital wing with Draco’s laughter ringing in her ears. She spared a wink for Snape, who was scowling
darkly, before marching out the door.
Once in the hall she thought for a moment that she felt something brush
past her, but no one was in sight.
“Bloody ghosts,” she muttered and continued to
find her guardian.
_____________________________________________________________________
Harry ran as fast as he could from
the hospital wing without being completely obvious. Once he was past Eris and well out of her
line of sight, he whipped the invisibility cloak off and stuffed it in his
pocket. His stomach was clenched in
knots and he felt somewhat nauseous.
Get a grip, Potter! They were
just joking around. Your sister is NOT
shagging someone you hate. Just get a
grip.
He stopped in the corridor and
thought over the conversation he had just heard. If he was to be rational about this, and he
really wanted to be, he had to admit that not seeing one another for ten years
negated the possibility of romance. He
hoped. Therefore, Harry decided that he
was just going to have to accept the fact that Draco and Eris were friends and
pray that the ferret hadn’t poisoned Eris against him. They did seem to be close and perhaps they
would be good for each other.
“Harry?”
Harry whirled about to see Eris standing behind him.
“Hello, Eris,” he said quickly. “Is Malfoy feeling any better?”
He watched as those familiar green
eyes gazed at him suspiciously and held his breath. “Yes he is actually. I wanted to find Felicity and tell her that
we’re ready to move back to the manor.”
“You won’t consider staying here,” Harry asked
softly. He knew he had to give her
space, but it hurt.
The young woman sighed. “Don’t worry.
I expect that we will be coming and going from here quite often and I
haven’t forgotten that I owe you another talk.”
vHarry reached out for her, but she took a quick step
back. He took a deep breath and ran a
hand through his messy locks. “You don’t
owe me anything, Eris. I just want to
get to know you. I hate that we’ve been
kept apart. You’re my sister, my only
true family. That’s all I’ve ever really
wanted out of life and I hate that you’re afraid of me.”
“I’m not afraid of you,” his twin snapped.
“Angry then,” he said sadly. “Just give me a chance. Please.”
He searched her face, watching as
her features softened for a moment and he almost believed that he was about to
be let in. Then something flashed in her
eyes and the moment passed. “In
time. For now, I need to get Draco back
where he feels safe.”
“Of course. I’ll take you to Madam Prince.” Harry led her towards the staff room with a
heavy feeling in his chest. Despite her
words, he sensed that Eris did not intend to ever let him get close.
______________________________________________________________________
Severus followed close on Eris’
heels once they flooed into Prince Manor. His grandmother and the girl were helping
Draco slowly make his way to a guest room.
The boy seemed to be recovering well, but that didn’t relieve the
annoying twinge of guilt he felt as he watched the blond limp along. Eris had appeared suitably horrified when she
arrived to ‘save’ Draco outside the manor gates. This led Severus to believe that the girl
hadn’t quite known what she was asking when she told him to make it look as
though Death Eaters had left Draco for dead.
Draco was quickly settled into his
rooms and Severus stood outside waiting for Eris to direct his next action. The two women exited after saying goodnight
to the boy and he stood in the shadows out of habit, rather than necessity.
His grandmother pulled Eris into a
brief hug and then held her at arms length examining her. “I’m sure you’re happy Draco is back with
you.”
“Yes, ma’am,” the girl replied with a small
smile. “I have missed him, though I
should confess to you that we have been writing to each other all this time.”
Felicity waved this comment
away. “Did you really think I didn’t
know, my dear? I kept a careful watch
lest Lucius Malfoy thought to seek you out, but I couldn’t bear to cut you off
from him completely.”
Eris looked a bit surprised and
Severus smirked. No one pulled the wool
over the eyes of Felicity Prince. He had
learned that when he was young. The girl
pulled Felicity into another hug and kissed her cheek. “I’m grateful for that.”
Felicity stepped away and gave the
girl a stern look. “Really? Well then, perhaps as a token of your
gratitude you might give poor Harry a chance.”
Severus’ ears perked up at
this. Perhaps now he would discover the
connection between Eris and Potter. She
reminded him a great deal of Lily Potter at first, but on further inspection,
he had convinced himself that it was just her eyes. Really, she couldn’t be a relative. Potter had no relatives besides those Muggles and their only child was a boy.
“I just need time, Felicity!” Eris turned her back to the older witch and
was now facing Severus. Her emerald eyes
widened for a moment as though she had forgotten he was there.
“I know that,” Felicity said with a sigh. “It’s just that Harry is such a nice boy and
I can tell that it’s hurting him. He was
a wreck when you ran away that first day.”
Severus had to suppress a
snort. Oh yes, poor little Potter wasn’t
getting something he wanted. What was
going on? Was Felicity trying to arrange
a marriage between the two brats?
“I don’t want to hurt him, but he’s pushing
too hard,” Eris said softly.
Felicity snorted. “Ha! He
backed away when you asked. Something
else is holding you back. What is
it? Is it Draco?”
Eris rolled her eyes and Severus
saw a small smile pulling at her lips.
She was, no doubt, thinking of that sickening display that had occurred
in the hospital wing that morning.
“Draco is just my friend, Felicity.
He will support whatever I have to do no matter how he feels about
Harry.”
“Very well, you should head to bed then.” With that, Felicity turned and headed off for
the master suite.
Eris stepped closer to Severus and
motioned for him to follow. He crept
along silently in her wake until they stood before a dark blue door. The girl pulled out her wand and muttered a
few incantations. He felt several strong
wards dropping just before Eris grasped the handle and swung the door
open. They had returned to her private
rooms. He quickly followed her inside
and watched as she set her wards back up.
“You may speak freely in here, Master Snape,”
the girl said, turning to face him. “The
room is completely sound proof, there are no portraits, and the house elves are
not allowed to enter.”
Severus quirked
a brow. “My grandmother allows
you such privacy?”
Eris smirked. “She prefers that I do not annoy her with my
loud hobbies. Aside from that, well she
was a teenage girl once. Since she is
under the assumption that no one can get into the manor itself without her
knowledge, she feels comfortable allowing me to lock myself up.”
Hobbies, what hobbies? “She is aware of the fact that you have an
illegal potions laboratory in your wardrobe?”
“Of course not!” Eris gave him a curious look. “I was referring to the tendency I have
developed for playing excessively loud, American rock music in the
mornings. A little habit I picked up at
school.”
Severus decided to avoid the topic
of her frivolous teenage habits. “Where
did you intend for me to sleep, Eris?”
“I have a cot in the lab that I usually relax
on in between stirs.” He watched as she
walked over to the wardrobe and took down its wards. “It’s quite comfortable and you have my
permission to transfigure it into something more suitable if you wish.”
She stepped inside of the wardrobe
and he followed suit. Once inside he
realized that the space was immense.
There were several stations with potions under stasis charms. One side of the long rectangular room had a
waist high counter along its length with several cupboards below and hanging on
the wall. There were two large sinks set
into the counter top side by side. Along
the opposite wall there were several tall shelves filled with books, jars, a
some small potted plants. In the back of
the room, as promised, were a cot and a small end table with a lamp.
“This is sufficient.” Severus walked over to the cot and swept his
gaze over it. It actually looked as
though the girl slept more often in this lab than in her actual bed. The sheets were tucked in, but a bit rumpled,
and there were several old potions journals on the end table. He left the sleeping area and began to
appraise the lab, calculating the chances that he might be able to convince the
girl to allow him use of her instruments and ingredients.
“If you have the urge to brew I ask that you
alert me so that I can get whatever you need.”
He glanced at the girl suspiciously, but supposed that his interest was
obvious. “I have no doubt that you could
break through my wards, but I would know that you had done so and then our
little agreement would be in jeopardy.
It would also be fair of me to warn you that you shouldn’t lie about
what you work on. I will know. I am not one of
your incapable, incompetent, Hogwarts students.
If it wasn’t for the age restriction I would already be a Potions mistress.”
Severus turned to regard her with
a doubtful expression. “Well, I suppose
that would explain certain things.
Felicity must have been bringing tutors in to you from the moment you
learned to talk.” Of course she
had. Wasn’t that exactly what the old
bat had done to his mother? After all,
it did her so much good in the end when she was too weak and cowed to stand up
to her husband.
“Yes.
When I attend Hogwarts this fall, I will only be continuing to study
Charms, Transfiguration, and Defense Against the Dark Arts. I have already tested out of my N.E.W.T.s in
Potions, Care of Magical Creatures, History of Magic, and Muggle Studies. I’m considering taking Herbology
and possibly Ancient Ruins or Arithmancy.” Eris opened one of the many cupboards and
pulled out several vials. When she
handed them to him, he recognized the invisibility potion and antidote, and the
scent remover. “These should tide you
over for a while. I will be fixing
Draco’s memory and giving him the potion that will allow him to see you
tonight.”
“Excellent,” he said with a nod. “Now, why don’t you tell me exactly what your
relationship is with Mr. Potter?”
“I don’t believe that is any of you business,”
the girl snapped.
Severus frowned. “Has my grandmother gone and done something
foolish like betrothing you to the dunderhead?”
Eris looked positively green for a
moment. “NO! Merciless Medea, where did you get an idea
like that?”
“From the way you two spoke of him, of course,
and from his urgent desire to spend time with you.” Severus locked gazes with the girl and tried
to employ Legilimency, but her mind was firmly shut.
“Now, now, Master Snape,” the girl
purred. “It won’t do you any good to try
those tricks. I had a very good
teacher.”
“Indeed.”
Severus stepped right next to the girl and leaned in close to her. He was a good eight inches taller than she
was at his 6’3”, forcing her to crane her neck upwards to look at him in such
close proximity. “Now, Eris, I trust you
with my safety. Don’t you think you can
trust me with this small piece of information?”
To his surprise the girl actually
laughed. “Trust? What a sad little Hufflepuff notion, don’t
you think, Severus? I don’t trust anyone.”
No longer comfortable being so
close to the girl, but unwilling to be the first to back down, Severus brought
his face down until their noses were nearly touching in the hopes of scaring
her into submission. “Not even Felicity,
the witch who has cared for you all these years.”
The girl smiled coyly at him. “I don’t trust Felicity. I am endearingly indebted to the woman for
all that she has done and as such I will do what I can for her.”
Severus narrowed his gaze and
tried once again to implement Legilimency, but subtly this time. “And what about Draco? You seem to trust him.”
“Draco is in the same position as Felicity
with the addition of the oath,” Eris said matter-of-factly. “I would do just about anything for either of
them, but I will not share my secrets unless it serves my purposes to do so. I get nothing by telling you what my relationship
with Harry Potter is.”
Before Severus could reply a
burning sensation filled his arm. He
clutched at his dark mark and took a step backwards. “I am being summoned.”
“So I noticed.” With that, Eris hurried about the room
gathering up supplies. She stopped at
one of the cauldrons in stasis and he watched as she removed the charm and
filled a large vial with an iridescent purple liquid.
“What are you doing,” he asked sharply. “I need you to lead me through your wards.”
“I’m getting what I will need to heal you when
you return,” Eris replied in an even tone.
Then she added with a smirk, “If you return.”
She turned back to him and he gave
her a suspicious look. “How would you
have any idea what shape I may or may not come back in?”
“Woman’s intuition,” the girl quipped and then
walked out of the lab. Severus hurried
to follow her, conjuring his Death Eater cloak and mask as they went. When they were once again outside the gate of
Prince Manor the girl stopped and faced him.
“Make sure to take the antidote once you arrive. I will be right here when you return.”
Severus spared the girl one last
glance before he disapparated to answer the Dark Lord’s call.
________________________________________________________________________
Eris waited a few moments after
the scowling wizard left before transfiguring her green cloak into a voluminous
black robe and conjuring a black mask.
She pulled the vial of purple potion out of her pocket and smiled grimly
at it. When she realized that Snape was
being summoned she felt a sharp twinge of her own right above her heart. Now she would have to go and walk into a hell
of her own making. She pulled out a
serpent pendant from her robes. It hung
from a silver chair and never left her neck.
“Proditor,” she said with a slight tremor in her voice and
disappeared with a tug at her navel.
_______________________________________________________________________
Severus stood in a large group of
Death Eaters and calmly emptied his mind of all thoughts of Draco. Voldemort sat on a throne-like chair on a
raised dais at the head of the group and was ranting about his followers’
inability to find the young wizard. For
this reason alone, Severus was glad that he was held in favor and spared from
the random bouts of the Cruciatus Curse currently being tossed about. Things were slowly calming down and the
madman that ruled them was calling for attention so that he could discuss his
latest attempt at becoming more powerful.
“After a long ssssearch, I have found a pupil
capable of aiding my effortsssss at regaining my proper form.” This definitely caught Severus
attention. What was the old snake up to
now? Then something seemed to catch
Voldemort’s attention towards the back of the forest clearing where they were
gathered. “Ah! You have finally arrived. I hope you have ssssssomething for me.”
Every black hooded head turned to
see a slender figure dressed in Death Eater garb, but with a black mask,
walking towards Voldemort. The reptilian
man rose and held out a hand to the new Death Eater. Severus watched with a scowl as a petite,
black gloved hand emerged from the robes holding a potions vial. He couldn’t see the contents and nothing
about the figure that held the vial could easily be determined. The slight form led him to believe it was a
woman and perhaps a young one. Then
Voldemort held the potion up for all the Death Eaters to see and Severus had to
bite back a curse. There in the vial
swirled an iridescent purple potion. It
was Eris.
______________________________________________________________________
Eris schooled her features behind
her mask knowing that the creature before her could easily break down her
mental walls if she gave him an opening.
He was, after all, the one who taught her to build them. She offered him the potion and he held it up
for inspection.
“I am certain that this is the one, my
Lord,” she hissed quietly. She
remembered how delighted Voldemort had been when he realized that she had
become a Parselmouth along with her brother through the magical bond they
shared.
His red eyes gazed piercingly in
to her green ones and she held her breath. “Yes,
my pet, I believe you are correct. I am
eager to see the effects.”
“I added a de-aging component to it as
well,” Eris continued, lowering her head in submission. Oh yes, she knew very well what he was eager
for. It was little comfort to know that
she had a few more weeks before he took his advances beyond gentle caresses and
innuendo, but she had brought this upon herself.
“Indeed.
Excellent, my little snake, shall we see what your hard work has
wrought?”
Eris offered a silent nod and held
her breath as the snake-like man uncorked the vial and brought it to his
lips. For a moment, while his attention
was drawn away, she wondered why she hadn’t just worked up the courage to
poison the weak bastard, but she already knew the answer. Killing this body would matter little. He had ways of coming back, he made sure that
she knew that little tid-bit from the start.
Besides, she made her bed and she would sleep in it until either she got
what she wanted or a more promising offer came along.
The potion began to take effect and
the wizard’s features contorted. He fell
to his knees and was completely hidden by his robes then. A long, high-pitched hissing erupted from the
crouched figure and Eris took a step back.
Soon, Voldemort’s trembling ceased and he slowly began to rise. Eris held in a gasp when the wizard pulled
off his cloak, but the Death Eaters had no such reserve. The potion had worked very well. He was now wholly
restored and looked to be in his early thirties. His head was covered with wavy raven hair and
his body appeared fit and trim from what Eris could see through his robes. His eyes were still a frightening red, but
she didn’t think that any restorative potion could change that fact. Those red orbs were a mark of the blood that
covered his hands and soul.
Voldemort came to her then and
carefully removed her mask and pulled back her hood. This was not something she had planned
for. Snape was out there and she was
having a hard enough time keeping that particular spy in the dark as it was. All thoughts of remaining hidden were quickly
pushed away as her master swooped down to pull her into a crushing kiss, no
doubt to show his gratitude. When he
pulled away, he turned her to face the Death Eaters.
As he spoke, Eris vaguely noted
that his words had lost their unnatural hiss.
“My faithful, I present to you the diligent young woman who made this
cure for me, Eris Potter, Harry Potter’s twin sister.”
As Eris watched the chaos that
ensued she wondered if nuclear fallout would have a similar effect.
