Rowling owns Harry and his wonderful world, but Marvin, the Krivdals,
and the plot are all mine and if you touch them I’ll
sic Severus on you!
Chapter 5: Family Comes in Many Forms
Marvin stared down at the stack of
parchments. It was a contract, and not
just any contract, a seven year contract to teach Muggle Studies at Hogwarts.
Marvin could hardly believe his eyes.
“You…you want me to teach at Hogwarts?”
Dumbledore’s smile was warm and
his eyes were twinkling as madly as Marvin had ever seen them. “Correct, dear boy. Absolutely correct!”
“And that’s why…all the books and the
wonderful robes…to teach?” Marvin looked
at the other faces sitting around his tiny table. They all had identical looks of anticipation
and anxiousness, even Severus.
Harry spoke up. “Well, we knew that you would probably want
to have the robes to help you feel as though you were fitting in at first, and
for whenever you need to go into Diagon Alley or Hogsmeade.”
“They should help you hide a bit better from
reporters at any rate,” Draco added.
Albus
cleared his throat. “Now, I know this is
a bit of a shock, Marvin, and that seven years seems like quite a long time, but
rest assured that if for any reason you don’t feel as though things are working
out for you at Hogwarts I will release you from the contract. The seven-year period is more to keep anyone
else from being able to drive you out.
Also, over the coarse of seven years you will
have the opportunity to teach one batch of students from the first year through
their graduation, providing an end example of your teaching ability and well
planned curriculum.”
Marvin swallowed hard. He would like nothing better in the world to
go to Hogwarts and stay in the wizarding world for
the rest of his life, but this wasn’t a fairy
tale. There were very serious matters to
take into consideration. Would he be
equipped to properly teach magical children, having no magic himself? Would the students be able to respect a muggle well enough to learn from him? “Sir, I’m…this is something I’ve only ever
dreamed of, but are you certain that I’m fitting for the task? I wouldn’t put the children’s education in
jeopardy, no matter how small a part a class like Muggle
Studies plays in it.”
Albus
beamed at him. “I would have thought
less of you if you didn’t have your doubts.
There is no doubt in my mind that, being a muggle
yourself, you have better qualifications than any other Muggle
Studies professor we’ve had. Also, I believe that
your chosen path of education, history, gives you even firmer ground to stand
on. Are you at least interested enough
to hear what sort of things we had planned for you?”
Marvin nodded. “I, Professor, I’m only worried about how
well it would actually work. Silly as it
may sound, my heart is telling me to dive in, but my gut is holding me back a
bit.”
“What about your head, Marvin? What is that telling you,” Severus asked softly.
Marvin smiled. “My head is too busy conjuring up the first
week’s lesson plan to give a damn about the other two and their bickering.”
Albus
clapped his hands together and everyone else smiled happily. “Excellent!
Now, seeing as how you don’t know very much
about the wizarding world beyond what Jo’s books have
taught you, you’ll need a bit of training up.
Mostly the basics, customs that you may need to touch on for comparison
in your class. Also,
I thought it would be helpful for you to have teaching assistants. Any ideas on how many you would like? They will all be seventh years of course.”
Marvin frowned and thought hard
for a moment. Even in the seventh year,
a Hogwarts student’s schedual was crammed and they were burdened with a good deal of homework and the stress of
studying for N.E.W.T.s. “Well, perhaps it would be best to have them
on a bit of a revolving schedual. Maybe if we chose two seventh years from each
house, one pureblood and one muggle-born. We may have to compensate with a half-blood
from Slytherin. Severus,
have there been any muggle-borns in Slytherin?”
“Very rarely, and none currently to speak of,
thought there has definitely been an increase in my half-blood students.” Severus sneered. “Minerva and myself
have a theory that the sorting hat is trying to allow Slytherin house to
gradually become accustom to the idea.”
Marvin nodded slowly. “Safer for the students, perhaps, but doesn’t
that mean that there are some children who are being misplaced?”
Albus
chuckled. “Not at all,
Marvin. Two houses are often in
very close running for the same child.
The hat will always chose where the student belongs best, but the
children themselves still harbor old fears of entering Slytherin. It will take time, but we will overcome it
and I believe that your presence at the school can only help. Minerva met a young muggle-born
girl just this past week who will be entering her first year. She’s willing to bet
just about anything that the girl is headed for Slytherin. Someone like you is exactly the role model
she needs.”
Marvin didn’t
need to think much more after that.
“Then I had better be there for her, shouldn’t I? What kind of savior would I be if I let down
a damsel in need?”
“Wonderful!
Now, I’m sure you’re still a bit concerned about how you’ll manage
outside of the school,” Albus said gently.
“Yes sir,” Marvin said with a sigh. “I’m sure the whole bit of fame might help
for a while, but how many people are really going to accept this? Won’t people be worried about the risk of
exposure?”
“Indeed they will,” Albus
said with a sly smile that worried Marvin just a bit. “There are, of course, certain customs set up
for slightly similar situations, such as in the case where a witch or wizard
wishes to marry a muggle. That is where your present from Severus comes
in.”
Marvin’s eyes snapped to Severus
who was looking unusually nervous. The
dark-eyed wizard slipped a hand into his robes and pulled out a roll of parchment which trembled ever so slightly as he extended
it. Marvin quickly took it, breaking the
seal and unrolling it to reveal the heading: Adoption Contract “You’re going to adopt me? You really want me in your family?”
Marvin felt himself warming all
over as Severus offered him one of his rare, struggling smiles. “I was serious when I said that I would
consider you a brother. This will simply
make it legal and binding.”
“But if you adopt me, doesn’t that make you my
father?”
Albus chuckled. “This is a special contract, Marvin,
specifically tailored to make you a member of the Snape family as Severus’
younger brother. Your last name can be
changed completely or hyphenated, the choice is yours.”
Marvin sat silently for several
long moments, trying to really get his head around the fact that his life was
about to change very drastically. Of
course, hadn’t it already been changed quite a bit
that last summer when he saved Harry? He
could handle this. It was only going to
change his life for the better. He had
been without family for most of his life and now he suddenly had more than he
knew what to do with. Harry, the Weasleys, the Malfoys, the Lupins,
and Sirius were all a form of family now.
The Krivdals as well. Then there was Severus. Severus, who wanted to
formally take Marvin into his family, to share his name with him. Severus who was sitting across from him
looking very worried at this point, reminding him of how long he had been
silent.
“I can’t think of anything that would make me
happier, even coming to work at Hogwarts.”
Marvin beamed at his soon to be
brother and was quite pleased when he realized that Severus wasn’t
trying to hold back his smile any longer.
