Chapter Four
Sirius
He hadn’t even thought about it. It was an action that just seemed right. The single moment lasted for an eternity, before he finally found the strength to pull away. For one moment, it didn’t matter that she was dating someone; it didn’t matter that he was the most popular boy in school, and had snogged his share of females; and it didn’t matter that he had promised James he would try anything for fear of compromising James’ chances, however slim, with Lily. All that Sirius was concerned about was her. Her skin had felt so soft in his hands, and he wanted to taste it. But the chaste kiss on her palm had not been enough to sedate the beast in his stomach. Sirius had to kiss her, just once.
Sirius watched as Anexia’s eyes fluttered open behind her glasses. Her full lips were parted slightly. He smiled at her as their eyes met. He watched her start breathing again, and she smiled, too. Suddenly the sky opened up. With a might crash, rain began to fall in heavy torrents. It was the type of rain that soaked and saturated with giant drops, and within seconds the two students were drenched. Water dripped from their hair and clothes. Anexia sighed as she reached up to remove her glasses; they were pointless in the pouring rain. She looked up at Sirius and caught his gaze again. Without a second’s hesitation, he dropped his wand and brought his hands to her cheeks. He leaned down again and his lips involuntarily crashed onto hers. He could help it. She was so soft, so real. He’d never felt anything like it, not once. And he’d been around the block. But what shocked him the most was that Anexia was kissing him back. She returned his fervor beat for beat and before either of them could register what was happening, she had pressed him against the tree he had been leaning on. Anexia’s hands were on his chest, gripping to his wet clothes. Sirius had just started to nibble softly on her lower lip when Anexia pulled away. Her expression was shocked, and a little afraid. “Sirius,” her voice cracked. “I can’t… Richard will…”
“Fuck Richard!” Sirius spat. The moment had passed. “He doesn’t love you like…” Whoa. Love? A voice stuttered in Sirius’ brain. You can’t be serious. You don’t love her. You hardly even know her! When was the last time you had a meaningful conversation with her? Never. She’s just like all the others. Sirius debated on arguing with the bitter voice in his mind, but Anexia’s questioning stare caught his attention. She was obviously waiting for him to finish his statement. “Forget it.” Sirius muttered. He couldn’t tell her. He couldn’t tell her that he had been wanting her since their first year. He couldn’t tell her that, after watching her for seven years, she was the most beautiful person he had ever met. Richard apparently meant more to her than he had expected-- she was, of course, the one who had pushed away and brought up the topic of her current boyfriend. Anexia’s wand was still lit, though it did little for the rainy atmosphere, and he found his wand easily on the cold ground. Without even looking at her, he turned and continued through the darkness. They did, of course, have a detention to serve.
The soggy sound of footsteps behind him-- and the tiny glow of her wand-- let Sirius know that Anexia was following him. “I think I know where we can find some terry root.” Sirius said, pausing to turn. Anexia merely nodded, her head bowed. Sirius thought he heard her sniffle, and his heart melted. If she was crying, he’d kick himself. Before he could stop himself, he reached out and tilted her head up. Her eyes were glistening, but any tears she might have shed mixed immediately with the rain on her cheeks. Sirius sighed. He was desperate to ease the uncomfortable silence that had settled between them. As they continued forward, Sirius spoke again. “Why does Lily hate James?” He glanced down at her, at watched with mild amusement as the battle between the demons in her thoughts showed on her face. He could tell she was torn between easing her situation and ratting out her closest companion. Finally she spoke. “She doesn’t hate him, exactly. Lily does think he’s a prat, and that he needs to grow up. But she doesn’t hate him.” Anexia looked up for a moment and caught his gaze for a brief second before returning her attention to her feet. “In fact, she’s infatuated with him. Lily just doesn’t want to get hurt. And she feels that, because of James’ immaturity, he would be quick to love her and leave her.”
“He cares about her too much.” Sirius said. The rain had let up a bit, and had become a light drizzle of wetness. “We all know James his horrible at showing it, but he would never dream of hurting her. He just has strange ways of showing it.” Anexia only nodded, and again a silence settled over them. Sirius shook his head. Best to get their detention over with. “Here. This way.” A faint trail had been marked, and he turned to follow it deeper into the trees, failing to notice the increasing number of glistening spider webs that hung from the trees.
“Sirius,” Anexia whispered, and he looked down to see her shivering, arms hugging her wet body. “I don’t like this.” She was looking at the multiple webs crossing over her head. “I really don’t like sp… spiders.” Sirius chuckled slightly. She couldn’t even get the word out properly. “No fears, love.” He reached out to her, and he grinned as she placed her hand lightly in his. “I’ll protect you.” Anexia’s cheeks flushed as their fingers intertwined. That’s it. Sirius thought. Take things slow… don’t scare her away. “I really don’t think we’re going to find anything this far out.” Anexia muttered, her voice distant. She was still keeping a weary I on the thick spider webs. But so far, not a single arachnid had been spotted. But Sirius’ spirit for adventure had taken over. He wanted to see what was just around the corner. “Only a little further, Anexia. I promise.” Liar. Sirius shooed away the criticizing voice. They rounded a bend in the faint path, and Sirius felt Anexia’s entire body tense through his hand.
They were at the entrance of a small clearing. Every inch of wooded space had been covered by the sticky spider string. It almost looked like a next of some sort. Sirius inched forward, ever curious. “No, Sirius, please. Please, let’s go back.” Anexia was tugging at his hand, her voice wavering. He turned to look at her. She was shaking, her eyes looking around with the frightened gaze of a trapped animal. Sirius couldn’t help but yield to her. “As you wish.” They had just started to exit the strange clearing when a deep rustling sound caught Sirius attention. He returned his gaze to the far end of the space and froze. A massive spider had emerged from the webbing, eight long, hairy legs keeping its massive body off of the ground. Sirius’ breath caught in his throat. He hardly registered as Anexia squealed and grabbed his entire arm. “Aragog.”
The name slipped from Sirius’ lips. Hagrid’s favorite pet. The giant had mentioned the creature often when he tried to prevent the boys from traipsing about the Forbidden Forest in the middle of the night. But they had never once come across anything like it. “You know my name.” The acromantula said through a hiss. He inched closer to the couple. Anexia pressed herself closer to Sirius’ back. He could feel her entire body shaking, and he longed to put his arm around her to comfort her, but his muscles seemed to be frozen. “Hagrid speaks highly of you.” Sirius found himself saying. Anything to placate the beast, anything to keep it from eating them.
“You know Hagrid?” The name seemed to have an effect on Aragog. He backed away slowly and began to recede into his nest. “Than I shall not touch you.” Sirius finally found the muscle movement he needed to wrap an arm around Anexia and move towards the exit. His breathing had returned to a normal state. “You are most gracious, Aragog. I will be sure to tell Hagrid of your…”
Aragog cut him off with a final word. “But that does not mean my children will not.” Sirius found himself again stuck to the ground with fear. Children? Suddenly they were crawling from behind the trees. There must have been hundreds of the acromantulas, each one clashing jaws together and hissing fiercely. Sirius wracked his brain. He was in his seventh year! He had to know a spell that would get them out of this! He had to protect Anexia. It was a feeling that he had never felt before: an incredible urge to keep her safe. Hagrid’s words of advice to send up red sparks should they encounter trouble. He pointed his wand at the sky and sent up a number of brilliantly crimson shots. The bright flares frightened a few of the spiders, but it only staved them for a moment.
Sirius returned his gaze to Anexia. Her eyes were clenched shut, and she was shaking violently under his arm. She was gripping his shirt as hard as she could. Sirius tilted her face up. “Look at me, Anexia.” She opened her eyes slowly and he could see the shimmering tears that threatened to spill on her soft cheeks. “I love you too much to lose you now.” Then he kissed her forehead and pulled her to his chest. She passed out just as Hagrid burst into the clearing several seconds later
