An Unexpected Ally
As always, all I own here are the few characters I made up myself. The rest belong to J.K.R. I’m only playing with them. I’ll be happy to give them back when I’m done…… sometime next century.

Albus Dumbledore was sitting in his office looking at charts late that night when the Minister of Magic Rudolph Fizzywig came to call. “So Albus, have you found out who our savior is yet?” was the first thing out of his mouth.
“Regrettably yes,” Dumbledore answered with a heavy sigh.
“Why do you say regrettably? Who is it? Is it a confirmed deatheater or something?”
The older wizard couldn’t help but chuckle softly. “No, it’s not a deatheater. It’s James Potter.”
Rudolph’s eyes went wide and the color drained from his face for a moment. “Good joke Albus. Now tell me who it really is.”
“I’m afraid James really is the phoenix. Everything fits right with the prophecy. The day the centaurs saw the signs for the birth of the phoenix James was born. And they celebrated the conception of the son last Christmas Eve.”
“What does that last part have to do with anything? James was a little busy that night with a deatheater raid. He brought in the one and only prisoner around midnight that night.”
“Minerva and I paid them a visit Christmas Day; and apparently the Potters made quite a racket until about three that morning. It was quite obvious what they had been doing. And now Lilly is two months pregnant.”
“That still doesn’t mean anything!” Rudolph cried out. If Potter is the phoenix then we’re all in trouble.”
“I admit that he didn’t grow up to be how I’d imagined, but I still have faith in him.”
“Open your eyes you old fool! You still have faith in him because you’ve become emotionally involved. All you were supposed to do was raise him and keep him out of trouble.”
“Yes well, that proved to be quite a challenge didn’t it.”
“The rest of us can see what you obviously can’t. If he ever does defeat You Know Who it will only be to take his place.”
Dumbledore shook his head sadly. “I don’t see what you do because I know him better. He has a good heart under all that rage and malice. But for whatever reason he only shows it to those close to him.”
“Yeah, well I wish he would show it to me then. All I see is someone who thinks it’s funny to turn my desk into a hungry crocodile and lock me in my office with it. He even makes the bloody thing tick. And look at Azkaban. It’s the emptiest it’s ever been. And the reason is that James doesn’t bring in death eaters he captures. He just either flat out kills them or tortures them to death. Now tell me, what kind of good wizard takes pleasure in torture?”
“Rudolph, while I admit that the man is a total mystery, I’m not going to take back what I’ve been saying all along. He may have dark tendencies but that doesn’t mean he is altogether dark.”
The Minister sighed and stood up. “Albus, I do hope you know what you’re doing. Now I need to go home and get some sleep. Keep me posted.”
With that he left leaving Dumbledore alone again, staring down at a picture of a seventeen year old James Potter. “Please don’t let me down,” he whispered as he too headed to bed.

Lucius Malfoy looked up at the clock again while pacing anxiously in front of the parlor window. “He should have been here by now,” he whispered to himself. “Maybe he just got held up by something,” he rationalized; trying to ease the knots in his stomach.
He looked at the clock again for the millionth time. “Dobby!” he screamed out.
Within seconds the little house elf appeared before him. “What does master need?” he squeaked.
“Has there been any news from the Dark Lord?”
Dobby shook his head. “No Sir, nothing has come. Dobby has been watching all night like Master ordered him to.”
“Have any other messages come?”
The house elf shook his head again. “Well then get back to your post!” the blond hissed.
Just as Dobby disappeared again another house elf entered the room. “Master, Mr. James Potter is here to see you.”
“Show him in then Tinky.”
The blond took a few deep breaths and smoothed out his hair. As soon as the dark haired wizard stepped into the room Lucius lost all control and ran toward him wrapping his arms around James hugging him tight. “I missed you too” James squeaked between breaths.
Then Lucius took a step back and slapped James hard in the face. The dark haired wizard raised an eyebrow and stared back at Lucius. “Well, don’t we run hot and cold,” he spoke calmly.
“You know perfectly well what that was for. You were supposed to be here three hours ago! You had me worried sick. I thought you might have gotten captured or something! You didn’t even have the courtesy to send me a message to let me know you were going to be late.”
“Sorry… I really didn’t have much of a chance to. You know it isn’t easy sneaking in and out of death eater headquarters.”
“I know. I was just worried alright.”
James clutched his chest and fell back into the chair behind him with a mock expression of shock on his face. “A Malfoy just admitted to worrying.”
“Oh shut up.” The blond picked up a pillow off the couch and threw it at him.
James caught the pillow and stood back up roughly pushing Lucius down on the couch and sitting on his lap. He looked directly into the blond’s eyes and grinned. “Just admit that you love me.”
“I suppose I do,” Lucius admitted grinning back. “I’ve never met anyone like you James. You aren’t afraid of anything. You don’t care what anyone thinks of you. Every time someone criticizes you, you just tell them to piss off. How do you do it?”
He shrugged. “I guess it helps that there aren’t many people I really care about. As long as those I love still love me I’m good. I can’t really explain it.”
“You don’t have to explain it love. All you need to do is keep being you.” He hugged James tight and lightly kissed the right side of his neck. “How long are you staying this time?”
“As long as I want. I guess it will depend on how good your information is.”
“I haven’t seen you for nearly a month and what information I have for you is the first thing on your mind?”
“Well I have to have something to tell Dumbledore. And if you don’t have anything good I’m going to have to go back and find something.”
“You spent all that time snooping around and didn’t learn anything?”
“Not much. My prisoners weren’t very talkative. Usually I’m very persuasive, but not this time unfortunately.”
“So all those that went missing…”
“Yes, they’re all dead. I had fun with them for a while, but everything looses its appeal eventually.”
“You do know that a lot of people think you’re going to be the next dark lord?”
“So I’ve heard. Those people are idiots anyway. What right do they have to judge me anyway. None of them had to live through half the shit I did.”
Lucius held him tight. “Shh my love. I know the real you, and I love you dearly. Changing the subject; how’s Lilly?”
James took a deep breath and gently nuzzled him. “She’s good. I sent her a letter telling her I would be home in a few more days.”
“Does she know you’re here?”
“No. You don’t want anyone to know because of how dangerous it is for you, so I haven’t told anyone. Now if you’re asking if she knows I’m spending time with someone, then yes. She knew the deal when she married me. It doesn’t bother her as long as I don’t fool around with another woman, and that isn’t going to be a problem. How’s Narcissa doing?”
“She’s on bed rest. The poor thing has trouble moving around.”
“Well she is seven months pregnant with your heir. I can only imagine how miserable she is.”
“Yes well, she’s very well taken care of.”
“Why did you let your parents tell you who to marry?”
“James, we’ve been through this. I’ve explained to you a hundred times that certain expectations come with the Malfoy name. Unlike you I couldn’t just shrug them off. I couldn’t disappoint my family.”
“Maybe you’re the lucky one. I didn’t have any family to disappoint.” He wiped a tear from his eye and stood up. “Now if you’ll excuse me I’d like to go to bed now. I’ll see you in the morning.”
Lucius sighed and watched James walk away.
