MNK: Hey! This chapter is a songfic, featuring the 1970�s hit �Torn Between Two Lovers� by Mary MacGregor. It�s a pretty sad chapter, but the story gets better. No sense in a long editorial for a short chapter. Later.

Chapter 4: Iris Remembers: Torn Between Two Lovers

Iris sat in her windowsill, trying not to cry as the memories she had been trying to forget came back with a vengeance. It was this very day, nineteen years ago, that Sirius had found out about her feelings for Severus. Naturally he didn�t take it too well.

�But who could blame him?� she whispered. �No other Lican has ever fallen in love with two men at once.� She sighed, and headed over to her bed, where she collapsed and began to cry into her pillow. �Why did it have to be me?�

Iris Flurdali was walking down the hall to the East Tower, when she felt a presence behind her, and a pair of eyes watching her. Still being new at sensing chi, she nervously called out,

�Who�s there?�

�You shouldn�t be walking around here alone, Miss Flurdali...� Sirius Black smirked, stepping out of the shadows. �...and especially not so late in the evening, when no one�s here to hear you scream.� Iris smiled softly at him as he gently pulled her into his strong arms, burying his face in her neck. He sighed softly, holding her close and inhaling her sweet scent, once again trying to separate it into the different smaller scents that made it up. She embraced him tightly as she could, wishing the moment would never end. All too soon, he pulled away from her.

�Shall I walk you to the tower?� She nodded, smiling sadly. This confused him. Over the last month or so, the smile that always made his heart skip a beat had grown sadder and sadder. Confused as he was, he took her hand and led her to her room on the first floor of the East tower. Once there, they sat down, and Sirius tried to pull her into another of the deep, passionate kisses they�d routinely shared in private. To his surprise, she pulled away and took her seat in the window. �Iris, what�s wrong?� he asked, concerned. He saw a rogue tear slide down her rosy cheek and stood to head to her side. Before he even took a step, she held up a hand to stop him.

�Please, Koi.� she whispered, staring at the grounds below. �Stay there. It�ll be easier on both of us.� Now genuinely terrified, Sirius sat back down. �There�s something I need to tell you.�

There are times when a woman has to say what�s on her mind,

Even though she knows how much it�s gonna hurt.

Before I say another word, let me tell you �I love you.�

Let me hold you close, and say these words as gently as I can.

Suddenly, Realization crept into his blue eyes, though it was soon replaced by hurt. �This is about Snape, isn�t it?� he asked. Iris didn�t look at him. �What did he do to you? Did he hurt you?!� Iris shook her head and tried to choke out the words that she hated to say.

There�s been another man that I�ve needed and I�ve loved,

But that doesn�t mean I love you less.

And he knows he can�t possess me, and he knows he never will,

There�s just this empty place inside of me that only he can fill...

Sirius just gaped at her for a moment, seeing the pained look on her face, and the tears of agony falling from her eyes. �You�ve been having a relationship with that greasy-haired little bastard Snape?!� he growled. �You�ve been CHEATING on me?!�

�We agreed when this started that it would be a no-holds relationship, Sirius. You suggested it, and I complied. You can�t cheat on someone that you�re not dating unless you�re mated or married.�

Sirius stared at the woman he loved for a moment. He�d suggested THAT? What had he been thinking?! �Why him, Iris?� he asked hoarsely. �What does he have that I don�t?�

�This isn�t a competition, Sirius.� She refused to look at him. �Licans never fall in love for any discernable reason. We just feel it in our hearts.�

Couldn�t really blame you if you turned and walked away,

�Iris.� She finally looked up, only to see the anger and heartbreak that had distorted his visage. �I�m sorry I wasn�t GOOD enough for you.� he snarled. �It�s over. Have a nice life with your precious SEVERUS.� he spat poisonously before turning on his heel and leaving the room, slamming the door. She crept toward her bed where he�d been sitting, and sat down. First it was one tear. Then came another, and another, till they were coursing down her cheeks. She fell onto her stomach with her face buried in the pillow, sobbing her heart out. She truly was alone. Severus had reacted the same way.
