Assimilation
Chapter 5 A posh frock
Poppy waved her wand at the doors that led to the great hall. There was the usual excited chatter coming from inside. Most were talking about that afternoons events over at Hagrid’s class. When she gently urged Jane ahead of her as they entered, silence fell. Jane felt very uncomfortable now but with Poppy’s hand at her back silently pressing her on, she continued. All eyes were on her. Taking in the suit she wore, her shapely figure, her ebony locks streaming down her back. Her lovely face. Jane looked stunning. The episode with unicorns was forgotten by all for the moment. A few of the girls were not too happy with Jane’s new look. She was attracting too much attention from the male students. And that included their boyfriends. After being poked, prodded and scowled at by said females, those particular boys hid their looks behind there lashes. The rest though continued to admire her openly. Even Draco Malfoy had to admit that she was attractive. Someone gave a small wolf whistle which encouraged a few more to do the same.
Up at the head table Dumbledor’s eyes twinkled as he and MacGonagall smiled down at her. Poor Flitwick though nearly fell off the pile of cushions that he used on his chair to reach the table.
The best reaction that evening though was from Professor Severus Snape. ‘Fuck!’ He thought. ‘What happened to the muddy, scruffy, vampire screaming little spitfire that he had found last night? Well she didn’t look so little now. Look at those….She was stacked to sat the least. The girl had assets, that was for sure. She really was quite lovely’ ‘Shit!’ He unconsciously licked his lips as he squirmed a bit in his seat. He couldn’t believe he was beginning to getting wood for a seventeen year old girl. ‘Not girl, he amended, young woman.’
Poppy had noticed the surprised expression followed by momentary discomfort on the potion masters face. He snapped his mouth shut and quickly masked his face, but Poppy had seen it all. She knew what had been going through his mind. Smiling inwardly she ushered Jane up to the staff table. Poppy sat in her usual place and as Jane approached her own seat, Severus stood and pulled out her chair.
“Good evening Miss White.” ‘Shit! What was he doing?’
“Th¾
Thanks professor.” She gave him a brief smile as she sat down.
Only once she was seated, did Severus sit back down, wondering why the hell he just did that.
Albus smiled a bit more as his eyes twinkled a bit brighter.
Poppy, on the other hand, was grinning from ear to ear.
Jane liked looking good. She had never had clothes this nice before. What she didn’t like was the looks that some of the older boys were giving her. She knew that look. It was the same look Uncle Pete had when he wanted her. She kept her head down, while waiting for the food to appear.
“Might I say how very attractive you look this evening Miss White.” Albus offered.
Jane started and turned her head towards him, blushing “Thank you Sir.”
“I couldn’t agree more.” Professor MacGonagall added. “That colour really suits you.”
Jane, totally unused to complements, just went redder.
Severus was watching her out of the corner of his eye. ‘Hmm! I couldn’t agree more.’
It was a relief to Jane when the food finally arrived. Hopefully they would all concentrate on their food now instead of her. After placing her napkin on her knee as she had noticed the vampire do, she forced herself not to pile her plate to overflowing this time. She also took her time and allowed herself to taste what she was eating. A large glass of ice cold milk appeared in front of her instead of the customary pumpkin juice. The teachers had goblets of what she assumed was wine.
Severus watched her approvingly now. ‘So the chit did have some manners.’ “How are you this evening?” Severus wanted to kick himself. He did not strike up conversations with anyone.
“I’m fine sir. Thank you for asking.”
“No after effects after the events of this afternoon?”
“No. None. I was a little confused when I woke up and found myself in bed. Other then that, nothing.”
“I am glad to here it.”
“Sir?”
Yes Miss White.”
“What did happen this afternoon. I¾
I mean I know what happened but, I don’t understand it. My heads all mixed up right now.”
“Ah. Perhaps the Headmaster will have some answers for us when we meet in his office after dinner.”
“I hope so.”
They both spent the rest of the meal in quiet contemplation.
At the Slytherin table, Draco Malfoy had been watching them. He had delayed writing to his father. Now he was glad that he had. He wanted to find out more about this suddenly attractive new face. One thing was for certain. She was not a muggle. But nor was she an ordinary witch. ‘I think it would be a good idea to get to know this girl a little better.’
Malfoy was not the only boy interested in getting to know Jane on a more personal level. Quite a few had become more than smitten at dinner this evening.
Particularly Ronald Weasley. “I tell you Harry, she’s gorgeous.”
Yeah. But what about that thing with the unicorns? It wasn’t normal what happened out there.”
“Okay, I admit it was a little creepy. But it was probably just a fluke or something. Anyway, I think she‘s hot.”
“That was no fluke Ron. There is something very strange about her.” Hermione put in. “And I don’t just mean the foals either.”
“C’mon Hermione. Your just put out because they left you and Lav’ to go to her.”
“No I am not Ron. You saw how they were fawning over her. That wasn’t natural. And adult unicorns never show themselves. Nor do they come out into the open like that. Especially if humans are around. They do not trust them.”
“Hormone’s right Ron. Hey did Hermione’s the look on her face both tomes when that glowing thing happened. I could do with some of that. I’ve never seen anyone look that peaceful before.”
“Well I’m going to the library to see if I can find out what made them act that way. Maybe I can find something out that will help Harry.”
“How can glowing help Harry. Oh. I don’t know Ron. I’ll see you two later.” Whenever Hermione was confused or did not understand something she always went to the library. She believed that the answers to most questions could be found in books if one looked hard enough.
The boys let her go. They knew it was no use arguing with her once she set her mind to something.
That evening after dinner found Albus, Minerva and Severus sitting round the fire in the headmasters office. Albus was just ordering tea when Poppy came through the flue.
Poppy. How good of you to come. Is Miss White not with you?”
“She will be here soon Albus. I needed a word with you all first so I left her to sit and talk with Miss Medez for a little while. The first year Hufflepuff was brought in this afternoon crying her eyes out. Missing her parents, poor thing and Jane was glad to have someone to talk to. They are getting on very well?“
“And what is so important that you need to tell us out of hearing of Miss White?” Severus drawled.
“She seems to think that you Severus are going to take her back home, and leave her there. She also said that she will run away again if you do. “You’re not are you?”
“That was not my intention Poppy.” Though I must admit that I am curious as to why she ran away in the first place. Has she told you anything.”
Albus. She is not a virgin.”
“No I did not but….”
Albus. She is seventeen, no longer a virgin, and Unicorns, even adult ones, flock to her. You know the will not go anywhere anyone who is not pure. Also, she is terrified of retuning to that farm with you. She has not said so but I think that something bad happened at home. Something so bad that she is afraid to say anything. Oh and there is more.”
“More?” Severus spouted. “That girl is a bloody enigma.”
“Well work this one out then if you can. When we were on the staircase heading down for dinner, Jane realised that she had only her old shabby trainers to rear. They spoiled the whole effect that I was ….we were trying to create you know.”
Just get on with it woman. We are truly not interested in the latest footwear.”
“I’m coming to it Severus. Anyway, I summoned a house elf to bring a pair of shoes and when it brought them it insisted on putting them on for her.”
“Minerva leaned forward. “That is not so unusual Poppy..”
“No. But the elf, who’s name is Kali, said that she was honoured to serve the Assimilator.”
Albus completely lost his twinkle. Severus looked puzzled and Minerva choked as her tea went down the wrong way.
Before any of them could say more Albus asked Poppy if she would please go check on Miss White and possibly keep her there for a little while longer. The nurse huffed to herself feeling somewhat put out. After all, she was giving them all this information and she wanted to know what was going on.
“Very well. One of these days someone , somewhere might just tell me what is going on around here.” And she went back through the floo muttering to herself.
When she had gone, Severus raised a questioning eyebrow. “I take it you know about this ‘Assimilator’ Albus?”
“Some. But not much is written on the legend.”
“Legend?”
“Albus. Maybe it isn’t a legend. Maybe its true. You realise what this could mean?”
What the hell are you two talking about?” Severus was getting frustrated.
“Some say there is a legend Severus, some say it was a prophesy made over one and a half thousand years ago “
“Oh Merlin. Not another damned prophecy. Have we not got enough trouble with the one made about Potter.”
“Hear me out Severus , please. I will tell you what little Minerva and I know. “It is said that their will come a time when an evil so great, so powerful, that no man shall ever be able conquer it, will arrive. When that time comes, so will the Assimilator. It was said that the Assimilator would inherit the spirits of certain Deities. That he would have gifts and powers unknown, and that upon reaching the age of maturity that he would come into these powers in a very special way.”
Severus looked at Minerva and back to Albus. “Really. And what would this being, a male I might add, have to do with Miss White?” He was afraid he knew what it had to do with her but he had to hear it for himself.
“Like I said, this tale goes back more than fifteen hundred years. Obviously things have been altered over the years. It is my belief that Miss White Is the Assimilator, and that she has been sent to us to rid the world of Voldemort.”
“Severus could take no more, He burst out laughing. His shoulders shook and tears ran from his eyes as he doubled over on the sofa. “Y¾
you know, you nearly ha¾
had me then.” He choked out.
Albus and Minerva waited until he had calmed down a bit but when he looked up into their faces and saw how serious they were he cracked up again.
A full five minutes later he had calmed enough to take a drink of water from a very disgruntled Minerva to control the hiccups he had given himself from laughing so hard.
“Have you quite finished Severus?” Minerva asked him crossly.
“Oh come on. Don’t tell me that you believe all this dragon dung.”
“Indeed we do. Severus, you and I must go to Falls Farm tomorrow and Get some answers. Then I shall Know for sure. I shall arrange for your classes to be covered and we shall leave directly after breakfast.”
Jane arrived through the floo.
“Miss White. Please, take a seat.”
Jane sat down on the sofa next to Severus, it being the only seat available. Severus took more than half of the two-seater so she was pressed between the arm rest and him, their bodies touching from shoulder to knee. She tried to sink into the corner of the sofa a bit but there wasn’t room.
Severus noticed her discomfort but did not give. As annoying as he found her, he decided that she felt quite nice against him. She was still wearing the outfit she wore for dinner and when she sat down her dress rode up a little showing off her shapely legs. Severus certainly did not mind the view. Though he would have never admit it. He tried not to smirk as she tried in vain to pull the hemline down some to cover her knees. Wriggling against him as she did so. She soon gave up when she realised it wasn’t going to happen and sat with her hands on her knees, and her eyes downcast, trying to pretend it didn’t bother her and politely refusing when Minerva offered her a cup of tea.
“No thank you.” Was the quiet reply.
“Miss White.” She lifted her eyes to the headmaster. Tomorrow I would like you to come with Professor Snape and me on a visit to Falls Farm.”
Terror flooded through her and her complexion went paler than it already was as her eyes glittered with fear.
Severus felt her tense beside him and he could fell her body trembling against his. Without knowing why, he wanted to comfort her, tell her not to worry, let her know that he would not let her come to any harm while they were there. But he did nothing. ‘How would it look if he suddenly started acting as if he cared. Of course he didn’t care. Why would I? The very idea is absurd.’ He thought to himself. His face remained stoic and his lips remained tightly closed.
“Please. I don’t want to go.” Her voice was a mere whisper. “I can’t . I can’t go back there. You’ll leave me there. Uncle Pete…..” Leaving the sentence unfinished she realised she had nearly slipped up. She couldn’t let them know. She was too ashamed. They would hate her if they knew what she had let Uncle Pete do to her. She was a bad girl and she did not want them to think badly of her.
Severus felt his hackles rise. He wasn’t stupid. He hated what he was thinking but could not help himself. He could hardly wait to meet Uncle Pete.
Albus saw the expression on His face and spoke. “Miss White. Jane. No one is going to leave you, even for a minute. You will return with us after we have spoken with your Aunt and Uncle. Do you not wish to see your Aunt?”
She shook her head. “No. I don‘t want to go. I don‘t want to see them. Not ever.”
“Never the less, I am afraid that you must. We shall keep the visit as brief as possible. One of us shall be by your side at all times and you will have nothing to fear.”
Jane started to panic. As the three watched, her hair began to crackle with static electricity and slowly started to lift up, and out. Much like the affect you would get when a balloon over your head. Sitting next to her Severus could feel the charge coming from her as it seemed to radiate from her and into him. I t made his skin prickle. As they all watched, she began to glow with a soft silver light. As the glow spread out from her and started to reach Severus. He tried to stand and move away but he couldn’t. He was unable to get away from her. The light got brighter and slowly took in a more golden hue, encompassing them both and holding Severus to her. Her breathing was steady but her eyes were unfocused as the light continued to glow. Severus could see Albus and Minerva in front of them. They were speaking and gesticulating franticly, but he could not hear them. His own eyes were wide as he tried to think what to do. He came up with nothing. He turned his head towards Jane. He tried to reach for his wand but his hand would not move in the direction he wanted it to. Instead he found himself reaching for Jane. Gently taking her hands with both of his, he spoke softly. “Jane.” She did not respond. “Jane.” Still no reaction and the light was now becoming such a brilliant white that he could see that his friends had to shield their eyes against it. “Answer me you little chit.” He spoke more forcibly this time, hoping to get a reaction. He got one. She looked down at their joined hands and then turned her head to look into his eyes. Her own were shiny with unshed tears and she smiled at him. A big beautiful smile. Severus felt like his heart had jumped out of his chest for a moment and landed back with a thud. He smiled back just as beautifully. He did not chose to. It was out of his control. At least he thought it was. As they looked at each other, the glow started to fade, gently flowing back to gold and then silver and paling until it was gone completely. They stayed as they were. Not speaking, not moving Severus did not know if he was even breathing. ‘Maybe I am dead.’ he thought. He didn’t really care one way or another. In fact he didn’t care much about anything right now. All he knew was calm and peace and he had not a care in the world. He had never in his life felt such contentment and love. ‘Wait a minute. Love, contentment? What was up with him.’ Literally dragging his gaze away from the girl in front of him he looked over to Albus. The old wizard had such an amazed expression on his face that Severus blinked. Minerva stood looking likewise with her mouth wide open.
No one spoke. He felt a slight tugging on his hands. He had relinquished his hold on the girl and she was trying to gently withdraw herself from him. She looked peaceful also. He let go of her hands reluctantly. He wanted this calm feeling to stay with him and if he let go of her then the feelings of contentment might go with her. They didn’t. Right now Severus felt that he could die a happy man.
He was pulled out of his revelry a bit when Albus spoke.
