Chapter 5 My Life in a Box
Severus appeared at the edge of a field. Checking to make sure his mask and hood were in place, he made his way down a dirt track along the edge of the field until he felt the wards erected to ensure that none other than Death Eaters would come this way. Passing through them, he could see a small group of similarly robed and masked figures ahead of him. Severus moved forward to fill the space left for him by the other Death Eaters.
Each Death Eater had his own place in the ranks of Voldemort and none to take the place of another. He watched as one after another the Death Eaters were called up to speak with the Dark Lord. Each was cursed for one misdemeanour or another before being sent away.
“Sssnape. Come forward.” Severus lowered his head and took two steps toward the raspy hissing voice before falling to his knees. He kissed the hem of the robe in front of him and waited for the Dark Lord to speak again.
“You may stand.” Said the voice of Voldemort.
“Thank you my Lord.”
Standing, Severus then kissed the ring on the scaly hand held out in front of him.
“What news have you for me, Sssnape?”
“None my Lord. The old fool returns tomorrow. I have been alone at the castle for several weeks now.”
“You lie.” Hissed the voice. “Crucio.”
Severus felt as if his blood boiled in his veins and his muscles contracted painfully, causing him to fall to the ground in pain as his bones felt ready to break. Just before they did, Voldemort removed the curse.
He gasped for breath as he pushed himself to his feet. Severus not once uttered a sound through the agonizing curse cast upon him. He never did, that was why Voldemort enjoyed casting the Cruciatus on Snape so much. He hoped to hear him cry out in pain one day.
“My Lord. I am sorry to have angered you. But I do not understand why.”
“You have been ssseen Sssnape. With a young woman. You made purchassses for her. She was at your ssside constantly.”
“I am sorry my Lord. I do not consider her to be a person. More a pet project of the old man’s. She is not much more than an animal, my lord.”
“Show me.” The Dark Lord demanded. “Legillimense.”
Severus was a superb Occlumens and showed the Dark Lord only that which he wanted him to see. The bundle of rags he found in a cell. The girl squatted in a corner of his office to piss on his floor, eating food with her fingers. He also allowed the Dark Lord to see him strike the girl on two occasions and how he shouted at her and scolded her.
“I sssee what you mean Sssnape. She isss indeed an animal. What does that fool Dumbledor want with her?”
“I am not privy to that information, my lord. I suspect that he is merely feeling charitable.”
“Very well Sssnape. You may go. But if you should dissscover anything more you would of course let me know.”
“I would my lord.” Severus apperated from the site and back to Hogwarts before the crazy tyrant changed his mind about letting him go.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
He staggered through the gates and made his way across the grounds and into the castle. The pain from Cruciatus could last for days and Severus was in agony. He managed to make his way to his office and collapsed into his chair. Sweat beaded his forehead as spasms overtook his muscles. Now that he was alone, he no longer held back the cry of agony that escaped his throat before he fell into unconsciousness.
Sky was awake. She’d had a strange feeling niggling at the back of her mind for the last couple of hours. Her stone shone darkly and she could feel a prickling on the back of her neck. When she heard Sir cry out, she froze. After five minutes, there was a low moan. He’d told her to stay in her room until morning but somehow she knew that something was not right.
Slipping out of bed, she steeled herself to disobey his orders and quietly opened the door, tiptoed barefoot across the laboratory floor and into the office. The torches were turned low and she could see the shape of Sir slumped in his chair. Edging closer very slowly in case he jumped up and grabbed her, she made her way towards his chair, barely daring to breathe as she did so. As soon as she was close enough, she saw the beads of sweat dripping down his face. His skin was an unhealthy grey and he was twitching, a groan coming from his mouth each time he did.
“Sir?” She asked. “Sir you alright?”
When he didn’t reply, she dared herself to touch his arm and jumped back in case he lashed out at her. Instead, he let out a cry of agony at her touch and his face, if possible went even greyer.
Sky didn’t know what to do. If it hurt him to be touched how could she do anything? Would he by angry if she tried? No matter how much he hated her, he helped her. He had healed her, taught her so much and given her something she didn’t even know existed; hope. She couldn’t go back to her room and leave him like this, not even if it meant getting a good hiding.
She felt the stone at her neck pulling her and she followed it to her room and retrieved her wand, wondering what she was meant to do with it. Padding back into the office, she felt the wand vibrating softly in her hand. As she looked at it, the wand aimed at Severus, a soft, pale blue light starting at its tip wound its way towards the man in the chair and spread itself around him until he was bathed in its glow. Severus twitched one more time and relaxed. His skin began to regain its natural hue and his face relaxed. The light from the wand receded and withdrew back into the wand.
Sky hesitated for a moment, put the wand on the table and rushed into his bathroom. She took a flannel and wet it under the tap, wrung it out and grabbed a towel. She looked in his bathroom cabinet and looked at the array of bottles there. Picking up a green one she read the label.
“Heal … ing potion.” She read. This was the same stuff he gave her when she was hurt so she dashed back to the office with the bottle, flannel and towel.
Perching herself on the arm of his chair, she folded the cool damp flannel and laid it gently on his forehead, expecting him to flinch, but he didn’t.
Taking the top from the bottle, she held it to his lips. They were already slightly parted and she tipped the bottle a bit to pour some into his mouth, only a little. She didn’t want to choke him. Just as the bottle reached his lips, a hand shot out and grabbed her wrist tightly enough to snap her bones.
She cried out. Whether in fear or pain she didn’t know but when she heard the crack as the bones in her wrist snapped, she cried out again.
“What the hell do you think you are doing?” Hissed the hoarse voice of the Professor.
Sky couldn’t answer. The pain in her wrist was so bad and he was still squeezing it tightly.
“Thought you would try to poison me when I was weak. Well I have news for you girl. I am never that weak.”
Sky fell from the side of the chair in agony, her wrist still held in his grip as she hit the floor. The bottle fell to the floor as she hung there and she could hardly breathe with the pain. Her stone began to glow with a fierce black light, encompassing her. Severus let go of her wrist as he took a nasty shock to his arm.
He rubbed his arm and stood, not yet realising that he was no longer suffering from the effects of the Cruciatus. Stepping round the chair, after giving her a swift kick and calling her a bitch he bent and picked up the bottle she dropped, reading the label to see what kind of poison she was trying to administer to him. Some of the poisons Severus kept in his private stores would kill in seconds if so much as one drop touched a person’s lips.
When he discovered it was a basic healing potion, he was bewildered. He had been convinced that she had been trying to poison him.
“What is the meaning of this.” He demanded. Ignoring for the moment that she was in pain.
“Hea … healing pot … you hurt. Try h … help.” Was all she managed to gasp before she passed out.
Severus frowned and looked down at her. He saw the wand on the table and realised he was no longer in pain.
He did not know what she had done but it had obviously worked and he had just shown his gratitude by probably breaking her wrist and kicking her in the ribs.
“Stupid, stupid girl. Sneaking around and poking your nose in where it is not wanted.”
As he was grousing, he picked her up and carried her to her room.
After examining her wrist and discovering that he had shattered the bones, he went to his stores. A few minutes later, he returned with a bottle of Skelegrow and a jar of salve. She was wearing a sleeveless nightie and he’d discovered a large ring of finger shaped bruises around her upper arm that could only have come from him dragging her everywhere. He wondered why she had said nothing; some were yellow and faded, others were deep purple and fresh. He rubbed the salve into her upper arm while she was still unconscious. Then he remembered the kick and lifted her nighty to look at her side. He poked and prodded until he was satisfied nothing was broken then applied some suave to the bruising there before putting the jar in his pocket.
“Enervate.” As soon as she awoke he sat her up and held a beaker to her lips. “Drink this. It will mend your wrist.
Sky drank down the mixture and pulled a face. Skelegrow was one of the worst tasting potions there was. He pulled a phial from his pocket and made her drink that too. It was to help with the pain.
Taking the empty bottle from her he put it in his pocket and aimed his wand at her. “Legillimense.”
He watched as she started at his groan. Saw her slip out of bed and sneak through to see what was wrong. Saw her go back for her wand before running for the towel and bottle of potion. He could see she was terrified but still she made herself touch his twitching body and place the damp cloth on his head to cool him down.
When she held her wand and aimed it in his direction, his eyebrows rose. Then a soft blue light emitted from the wand and covered him.
He continued to watch as she lifted the bottle of healing potion and tried to pour some into his mouth. That was when he grabbed her and gripped her wrist so tightly he crushed the bones inside. He saw the looks of horror and agony on her face before she passed out. He withdrew and lowered his wand.
Severus did not apologise for his actions. She should not have been sneaking about in the first place. Nor did he thank her for what she did to alleviate the after effects of the Cruciatus. He did not ask her to do so.
He simply placed her arm in a sling and left.
He returned to his office, Sky’s wand passing him on the way.
“Bloody hell.” He muttered as her door opened, admitted the wand and closed of its own accord.
With a flick of his own wand, he cleared the mess from the spilled potion, picked up the towel and flannel and retired to bed. Tomorrow, he would be rid of her and her strange ways.
Next morning he dressed, ordered breakfast and checked on the girl. Her wrist and side were healed and he removed the sling.
“Collect your things then come and get your breakfast.”
Sky entered the office a few minutes later with her large, half empty box, placed it on the floor near the door and sat down to eat.
If Severus was the sentimental type, he would have thought it sad that the sum contents of one box contained fourteen years of one person’s life. But he wasn’t, so he didn’t.
At eight o’clock Sky took her last bite of food and barely had a chance to put down her knife and fork before Sir pulled her from her seat, pushed the box into her arms and steered her out of the dungeons and into the main entrance hall.
“Put the box down girl. You can wait here until the Headmaster returns.”
He turned on his heel, walked away and happily forgot all about her.
When Sky put the box on the floor and turned to thank him for looking after her, he was gone. So Sky stood and waited, and waited, and waited.
When Severus emerged from the dungeons at three o’clock that afternoon with a set off pensives to show Albus she was still waiting.
“What are you doing girl? Why are you still in the hall?”
“Waiting Sir. No one comes for Sky.” She looked utterly dejected.
“Has the Headmaster not returned?”
“No one Sir. I wait, no one comes.”
Severus was put out. He wanted to leave her where she was and forget about her again. But she had been waiting here for seven hours.
“Have you eaten?”
“No Sir.”
“Oh for goodness sake.” He muttered. “Leave your things where they are and follow me.”
Sky ran after him and into his office. He ordered some sandwiches and pumpkin juice and told her to sit down and eat.
‘Where was Albus?’ He wondered.
A little over an hour later he felt the wards quiver and pulled the girl to her feet, making sure not to grip tightly enough to bruise, he dragged her back to the main entrance and left her there alone once more.
‘Let the old fool see to her now and come find him when he was ready. Severus did not intend to wait and greet him.’
Sky was terrified when a tall, bearded old man entered along with several other witches and wizards. She had no idea who they all were and they all stared at her when they walked in. Sky guessed that one of them must be Headmaster but didn’t know which one.
“Hello.” The tall bearded man approached her. His hair was white and his eyes blue. They twinkled as he looked at her. Sky stepped back as he walked towards her and he stopped. Albus looked at the girl. Her eyes were wide with fright and she looked ready to flee.
Clearly she was the child he had sent Severus to find. For some reason he was expecting a boy. Instead, he found a terrified young girl.
“I won’t hurt you child. Who are you?”
“Sky.”
“Hello Sky. What a pretty name. I am Albus Dumbledor. I am the Headmaster of Hogwarts. I take it that Professor Snape has been taking good care of you.”
“Fessor Snape. Yes. Sir make me well. Feed Sky. Say wait here.” Sky was stumbling over her words. This man seemed nice and he spoke to her kind but she was wary and the others were looking at her.
“Did he indeed. That is good.” Albus told her kindly. “And where is our esteemed Professor?”
“Steamed?” She questioned unsure.”
“I am here Albus. The girl has no idea what you are asking her.” Came the drawling voice of Severus Snape.
“Oh. And why might that be?” Albus wanted to no.
“Why? Because she is something of a dimwit Albus. An idiot. Dunderhead. Call her what you will. And since I am the one who has been saddled with her for almost two months, I should know.”
Sky felt hurt and sad when he said that in front of everyone.
Every day, he told her in some way that he loathed her. But to say it in front of these people she had never seen before seemed worse. She lowered her head in shame. She wanted to cry but didn’t. There was no point. No one comes when you cry.
“Severus that is a terrible thing to say.” Minerva scolded him as she moved toward the girl and placed an arm around her. Minerva felt the girl flinch and stiffen but kept her arm around her.
Sky wondered what this woman was doing. The way she spoke to Sir, he was surely going to give her a hiding.
“Perhaps when you have viewed my pensives you will change your mind Minerva. Until then I suggest you keep your opinions to yourself. Albus, when you are ready.”
“I shall be with you soon Severus.”
The Potions Master nodded curtly and went back to his rooms.
Albus looked back at the girl. “So. What to do with you? Where is your room?”
Sky didn’t have one any more. When Sir took her back and gave her sandwiches he told her that he was glad to have his storage room back and if Headmaster didn‘t return for some reason that she would have to sleep out here. She shrugged her shoulders and then remembered that she wasn’t supposed to do that.
“No room Sir. Waiting for you and room.”
“What?” Said several voices at once.
“Where have you been sleeping dear?” Asked the woman who’s arm was around her.
“Fessor Snape room.”
“Minerva went white, then grey and finally almost purple.
Albus noticed and acted quickly. “Did you have your own room in Professor Snape’s quarters?”
“Yes own room. Own bed. Own toilet. Sky‘s toilet.” She told him brightly. Then her face dropped. “Gone now. Sky bad, see thing and Sir angry.” Everyone looked at her perplexed. Her face brightened again.
“Got a wand.” She told them. And clothes, books. My clothes. Sir buy me things. Nice things.”
“Yes , well I think we should all remove our luggage from the hallway. I for one am in dire need of a cup of tea.” Albus told them. “Sky, would you care to join me?”
Sky nodded and followed the white haired man, all the while wondering what dire need was and why he needed to be joined. “You are broken?” She asked him.
“Pardon?” The Headmaster laughed as the reached the stone gargoyle the guarded the entrance to his tower rooms.
“You ask Me, ‘join you’. So you are broken.”
“No dear. Though sometimes I do feel that way. Would you like to have a cup of tea with me?”
“Yes Sir please.”
Once they were settled in his office Albus ordered tea and cakes and settled himself in front of the fire and asked Sky to take the seat opposite.
He asked what her last name was but she didn’t have one. He asked where she came from but she didn’t know. He discovered that her name was Sky. The Professor had given her the name. She was approximately fourteen years of age and Sir, as she called Severus, had taught her to use the toilet, eat with a spoon, read, write, do maths and speak fairly well. In addition to those things, he had healed her, and taken her to a place and bought her clothes, books and a wand. Sir didn’t like her at all because she made him angry
Albus was at a loss for words and decided that he would need to see his Potions Master and look at the pensives. “It seems a visit is in order.” He told Sky.
Throwing some floo powder into the fire he called; “Professor Snape’s offices.” And the flames turned green. “After you.” He waved his arm at the fire and looked at Sky.
Sir used the green fire to order food but he never told her to get into it. She moved away and shook her head.
“Ah. You have not yet travelled by floo. Very well. We shall walk. Come along.”
Albus opened the door and she followed him to the moving stairs that brought them here. Sky liked these stairs and would have liked to ride up and down on them all day. She followed him until they reached the dungeons corridor and stopped. When Albus realised she was no longer with him he turned back.
“Come along. I wish to speak with Professor Snape.”
Sky shook her head. “Can’t go back. Bad to go back. Sir want rid. Sky burden. Stupid girl. Making Sir angry. Sir not like. Sir hate. I wait here.”
“Why on earth would you think something like that? Of course he won’t be angry. Besides, you are here at my invitation.”
“No Sir please. Sir not want me here.”
Albus sighed. “Very well. Wait here for a moment.”
Albus entered the Potions Master’s office. “Severus. I brought the young lady with me but she seems reluctant to enter. Would you mind telling me why?”
“Because Albus, I have put up with her for long enough and told her not to return here. That is why.”
“That is a great shame Severus. She seems to have a high regard for you. She certainly respects you.”
“No Albus. She fears me. Same as she fears everyone and everything. I would prefer not to have her in my presence a moment longer.”
“Pity Severus. A great pity. Tell me, where did she sleep?”
“In a spare cupboard off the lab. I had a bed moved in there for her. And before you ask no, she cannot stay there again. I have had the bed removed. She is your responsibility now. Just as she should have been when you first sent me to get her. She has been nothing but a dammed thorn in my side since that day.”
Sky heard every word as she waited. She was not listening intentionally but the Albus man had not closed the door and Sirs voice carried down the corridor.
When Albus emerged a few minutes later she was standing where he left her, arms by her sides and her head hung low. The Headmaster knew as soon as he saw her that she heard everything.
“Oh dear.”
“What now?” Asked Severus as he came through the door.
“I am afraid that she heard everything Severus.”
“Serves her right for listening at doors then doesn’t it. My opinion has not changed. Good day Headmaster.”
Albus was disappointed at Severus’ crassness. Not overly surprised, but disappointed.
“Come along child.” He told her softly. We need to find you somewhere to sleep.
Minerva came to the rescue. There was an empty room just down the corridor from her own quarters that would be suitable and she had the house elves make it habitable for Sky.
Sky thought the room was lovely but she was lost in it. The room was just so big. It had a large bed, sofa and armchairs, a fireplace, desk, table and chairs, a wardrobe and a dressing table. It also had shelves for her few books and there was still lots of room left. A door in the far wall opened onto her own bathroom. She also had a window in her room and Sky thought that was best of all. Although when she looked out of it she felt dizzy. The ground was so far away.
“Thank you Sir.” She told Minerva when she showed her the room.
The woman chuckled. “I am not a Sir. My name is Professor MacGonagall.”
“Fessor Gonagall.”
Minerva took time to sit with her and teach her how to pronounce her name.
Sky liked Professor MacGonagall. She didn’t shout at her or grab her arm or call her stupid.
Sky put on her new robes like the Professor told her to and found the little pocket that Sir said was for her wand. Slotting it in, she waited. She didn’t have to wait long, the Professor came and told her it was time for dinner.
They went down the stairs and into the Great Hall. Sir told her what this room was called, but she had not seen inside.
When they entered she was amazed to see it had no roof. She could see the sky, and it had candles in it. Sky stared upwards at the view, turning as she did to see as much of it as she could.
When she heard a chuckle behind her she looked round. There were the same people she had seen earlier sitting at a big table. Then she saw Sir and he was scowling at her. Her face fell as she looked at him. His dislike showed clearly in his eyes. He was mad because she was here in the same room as him.
“Come and sit down Sky. I have a seat for you here.”
She moved round the table to sit next to the Headmaster like he told her. The trouble was that Sir was at her other side and she knew he wouldn’t like that. But all the other seats were taken and she dare not disobey the Headmaster anyway.
As soon as she sat down she felt Sir move slightly away from her. She hadn’t wanted to make him angry again so she sat quietly and hoped that he wouldn’t get any madder and start shouting at her. She was nervous enough sitting here with everyone. It had always been Sir and her.
Then she noticed an enticing smell and saw everyone had food on their plates. She looked at her own and it was empty. Sky didn’t mind that she had nothing to eat, but it was hard to sit there and watch as everyone else ate. Trying not to notice the plates full of food she studied her hands on her lap. But her eyes kept straying around the table.
No one seemed to notice except Severus. The staff were all busy chatting about their holidays. Severus sighed and spoke. “Steak pie, mashed potatoes, peas, carrots and gravy.” Then as an after thought, he added pumpkin juice to the order and it appeared in front of her.
Until now Severus always decided what she would eat and Sky never questioned that. Over the weeks he had allowed her more and more solid food as her stomach accustomed itself to it.
She didn’t know she was meant to verbalise her requirements so the house elves would provide for her. “Thank you Sir.” Sky spoke slowly. Not wanting to appear stupid. When she was nervous her words tended to be more stilted then usual. It was hard enough forming a proper sentence when she was relaxed.
The Potions Master didn’t bother to reply and carried on with his meal so Sky turned to her own food. She ate slowly too. Sir had told her off lots of times for eating too fast and spilling her food so she took her time and was careful not to spill anything down her new clothes. Sir would be mad if she did. She was doing fine until the white haired man suddenly turned and spoke, making her jump.
“So. What have you been doing with yourself since you arrival?”
She was just lifting a forkful of peas carefully to her mouth and dropped them all down her front. Her face turned as red as fire when she realised what she had done and her eyes flicked immediately to Sir.
Severus merely smirked in disgust. She placed the fork on her plate and began picking up the peas, hoping she hadn’t marked her clothes.
Albus waved his hand in her direction and the mess was gone, her robes clean. He had seen her jump when he spoke and noticed the fearful look she had given Severus when she dropped her food. The girl was absolutely terrified of his Potions Master. Albus was keen to see what was in those pensives.
The headmaster left the girl alone to finish her meal and asked Minerva to escort her to her room when they had all finished. Then he headed for the dungeons with Severus.
Once they were settled Severus placed the first pensieve on the table and Albus placed his finger inside. He was appalled at what he saw. This was the pensieve that showed how the girl had been found; a bundle of rags that contained a human being.
The next showed Severus bringing her into Hogwarts and his treatment of her wounds. Severus was as brilliant at preparing pensives as he was at everything else. He left out the parts that showed when he was putting his own needs before hers. Albus needed a brandy after the second pensieve. His face was almost as white as his hair.
“You have worked a miracle on that girl Severus. Had I not seen with my own eyes I would never have believed someone could be in such a state and still be alive.”
The potion Master nodded his head in acknowledgement and passed him the third pensieve, again carefully prepared. Obviously it would not do to allow the Headmaster see that Severus had, to a certain extent, sexually abused the girl. Nor did Albus get to see Severus striking her or shouting at her. The nasty words and comments were also left out.
The fourth pensieve showed what he discovered by Legillimense about her time in the cell followed by her toilet training back here and her lessons. Once again his own abuse of her was left out.
Albus had tears in his eyes when he had seen the two year old Sky thrown into the cell and manacled. The look on her face as she’d held out her arms, her bottom lip quivering before being kicked back, causing him to sob. His face was grave when he had finished.
“It is no wonder the poor girl is so frightened all the time Severus. Who would not be after a life like that. If you can call it a life. You have worked wonders with her. What made you decide to name her Sky?”
“It is just a name Headmaster. It has no significance whatsoever.”
Albus did not believe that but did not dispute it. “She is also very beautiful is she not?”
“I cannot say that I have noticed Albus. I found her to be more the thorn, then the rose.”
“Yet still you cared for her. Taught her.”
“I did not have much of a choice did I?”
“No, I suppose that you didn’t. Thank you for showing me these Severus. I shall do my utmost to make sure that you are not troubled with her any further.”
“Thank you Albus. Though it would have been better if I had not had the misfortune of being troubled with her in the first place.”
“Do you mind if I take these pensives with me. I should like to view them again. It would also be prudent to allow the rest of the staff to see them. That way they will have a better idea as to how to handle her.”
“Be my guest Albus. They hold nothing I care to remember.”
Albus was feeling deeply sad when he retired to his rooms. His Potion Master truly seemed to despise the girl. And the poor thing had been through so much.
