CH 5 Oh Sirius, what have you done?
A few eyebrows were raised. Lou was resisting Veritaserum, that should not have been possible, not for a fifteen year old muggle girl.
“How old are you Lou?” Severus asked. He already knew the answer, but because she’d already revealed that information previously, it ought to encourage her to answer now.
“F …fifteen.” She blurted.
“Where were you born?”
Lou clamped her lips together again as she looked around wild eyed. Why were they doing this? Why wouldn’t they leave her alone?
What is your middle name Lou? What is your last name. Where do you come from? Why were you living rough?”
He was firing questions at her one after the other. Lou felt a desperate need to answer, but just as desperately, she didn’t want to, she wanted to keep her private life private. They would send her back into care and she didn’t want to go.
Tears coursed down her cheeks as she struggled to hold her tongue.
“Lou.” She said quietly. “Lou. Lou. Lou. Lou.” She repeated as she wrung her hands and swayed back and forth. Her instinct for self preservation overriding the powerful drug she’d been given.
“She is resisting Headmaster. It should not be possible but she is. If I question her any further she may break under the strain.”
“I agree Severus, do you have the antidote?”
Severus stood and removed another phial from his pocket. “Drink this.” he told her.
Lou swiped it from his hand and sent it crashing into the wall. She knew he must have drugged her with that first bottle, and she wasn’t going to let him do it again. She didn’t care about the gasps from the others when she smashed the bottle. All she wanted now was out of here.
“No. I wont touch anything here ever again. Let me go. I don’t care if it’s safe or not I want to go now.”
Lou tried to stand and when Severus laid a hand on her shoulder with the intention of making her stay in her seat, she lashed out at him with her stick and belted him across the side of the leg with it.
“You keep your hands off me. All of you leave me alone. I’m going and don’t you dare try and stop me.” She yelled, as the Potions Master yelped in pain and fell to the chair.
The others stood and moved towards her. They were all talking at once and she hadn’t a clue what they were saying.
Lou didn’t care as she swung her stick about wildly and hobbled to the door.
Suddenly the walking stick flew from her hand and landed neatly in the hand of one Albus Dumbledore.
She didn’t wait to find out how he did it. Instead she dashed as best she could to the front door and tried to pull it open, clutching at everything she could to support herself. She was scared now, she’d clobbered the dark man and they were all coming after her.
She scrabbled with the locks frantically, expecting a hand to take hold of her at any moment. When she glanced back, she was surprised they weren’t all right behind her.
Instead they all stood near the door to the room she just left and watched her.
Managing to get the door unlocked, Lou yanked it open and tried to step outside. The trouble was she couldn’t, her feet felt like they were stuck to the floor. She grabbed the frame and pulled but she could not get through the door.
“What have you done?” She wailed. “Let me out please.” She was sobbing now, desperate to escape. “Please, I won’t tell, I wont. Just let me go, I want to get out.”
Next she knew she was floating toward the group of people she’d been trying to run away from and could do nothing about it.
“Nonononononono.” Was all she managed as she was floated back into the drawing room and deposited back on the sofa next to an extremely angry Potions Master.
Severus could quite happily have strangled her at that moment. His leg was agonisingly sore where the girl struck him with her walking stick.
Using his wand, he accio’d a phial from one of the trunks in the hall and swallowed the contents. The pain and swelling quickly eased from his leg and he tentatively flexed it, making certain that it was alright.
Not knowing what was going to happen next, Lou pressed herself into the sofa, as far away from him as she could. He was glaring at her and she noticed his eyes were really dark, black in fact, and she wondered for a second if he was a vampire. He looked like the vampires on the telly. Or maybe he was a demon, but she wasn’t sure what demons looked like. When he spoke she almost jumped out of her skin.
“What in Merlin’s name do you think you were trying to prove with that little display?” He snarled at her.
“Me.” She cried. “You drugged me. You had no right to do that, it’s against the law.” She turned to Albus. “And you …you floated me, and I couldn’t get out the door. It’s because of these things isn’t it? These things your making me wear. You kept asking me questions, things that are my business. I didn‘t ask you to tell me everything about you. It‘s not right what you did, so don‘t have a go at me for fighting back.” Lou looked round for her walking stick but couldn’t see it anywhere.
“If you are looking for your stick, it is gone. You are not safe to carry such an implement so you shall have to manage without one. If you need to go anywhere, ask for assistance.” Severus said.
“I will not, I need that stick.”
Why? So you can try to injure some other poor unfortunate who happens to be standing too close to you?”
“No. I .. I only …I thought you were gonna …hit me or something. That’s why I did it. I’m sorry I hurt you, but I was scared alright.”
“Why would you be afraid that I would strike you? No one in this house has laid a finger on you except to help you.”
Lou kept her head down. “I just did.” She told him softly. “Why did you drug me and ask me all those questions? What does it matter to any of you who I am?”
Lou sat quiet for a moment and then her head shot up. “Have you been looking in my private things? You have haven’t you. You had no right to do that, any of you. They’re my things, they’re private.”
Albus spoke up. “No one has pried into your private affairs Louhi, I promise, but your name struck a cord with Mr Lupin and you refused to give any answers. We hoped to find out by the use of Veritaserum.”
“What’s that, some kind of truth drug? I told you, it’s illegal to do that.”
“Not in our world it is not. Louhi, do you know the meaning of your name?”
“Yes, but I’m not telling you.”
“There is no need, we already know, but I would like you to tell me your last name. No one will send you away because of it.”
“What do you want to know for? It makes no difference to you.”
“Louhi is your name Black?”
Lou paled and averted her eyes. If she said nothing, they couldn’t do anything.
“It would appear you are correct Remus. The dates would certainly fall in with your assumption.”
“Your wrong.” Lou shouted. “Your all wrong. My names not Black, it’s not. It’s …it’s something else. Your wrong. You snooped. You said you wouldn‘t and you did.”
“Louhi, or should I address you as Louhi Melaina Black? That is your true name is it not?” The Headmaster gazed at her intently.
Lou nodded her head so slightly, that anyone not looking closely would never notice.
But Albus saw the nod, as did Severus, Lupin and Moody.
The Headmaster waved his hand and a small leather satchel made it’s way into the room, landing on Lou’s lap.
“Would you care to show us now?”
Her head whipped up as Mr perv, as she secretly called Severus, stood, he gave her a most venomous look and moved away from her.
Lou didn’t know why he suddenly looked at her like that. She knew she hurt him with her walking stick but he didn’t move away from her because of that she was sure. He stayed where he was until he discovered her name, for some reason the look he gave her stung.
Lou opened the satchel and passed several sheets of paper to the Headmaster, keeping her eyes lowered.
Albus, Severus and Remus stood reading the documents, making occasional comments and pointing out certain items of interest or importance.
Lou sat looking thoroughly defeated, her hands between her knees as the tears rolled down her cheeks to land on her lap, thinking about her life.
Her mum dumped her when she was a baby and her dad went to prison. She knew their names, that was enough for Lou. She didn’t need to know anything else. All she wanted, was to be able to get on with her life, and be left alone to do so.
She sat and rocked, humming to herself quietly, her cheeks burning in shame because they all knew what she was now. A street kid who’s dad was a criminal and a mum who didn’t want her. No wonder the man who brought her here moved away from her and looked at her like he did.
On hearing her name she sniffed and nodded, unable to meet anyone’s eyes. She knew they would send her away now, back to the care home where she would be processed all over again. Then she would be farmed out again to stay with a strange family that she didn’t know and who didn’t know her.
Well at least she would get these things taken off her ankles and get out of here. She could easily run away again once she was taken back into care. Though wanting to get away from somewhere and being thrown out where two entirely different things.
Lou tried to stand, ready to leave. It was difficult without the stick but she finally got to her feet and waited for them to take her away.
“Please can I have my things before I go?” She asked the old man quietly. “I’d like to take them with me, they’re all I have that’s mine.”
“Go? Where do you think you are going?” Albus asked her.
Lou looked at him puzzled. “I’m not stupid, I know how it works. You dump me with the authorities and they put me in emergency care, then I get processed and farmed out. You don’t have to pretend with me mister, I understand.”
Severus flicked his gaze in her direction. When he realised she was Blacks daughter he was disgusted, not so much with her, with Black. The man had got a woman pregnant, and then gone on to get himself arrested. For a moment, the thought of sitting next to Black’s spawn had sickened Severus. When he stood and saw her stricken expression at his reaction, he felt a bit uncomfortable, but it would have looked strange had he sat back down again immediately.
Now she just looked lost, unwanted by anyone here or anywhere else, and she was expected them to throw her out, pass her back to the muggle authorities.
“Stupid girl, how many times have you been told that you are to stay here?”
Lou looked at the Professor. “But it’s different now, you know about me. My dad’s a criminal and my mum, well I don’t know about her, if she’s alive or dead, but I know you don’t want me here anymore so you don’t need to pretend, I wanted to leave anyway.”
Severus looked deep into her eyes.
She heard him mutter something and he pointed his wand at her.
Lou felt her head start to ache, but she couldn’t tear her eyes from his as he seemed to bore into her with those black eyes. Then she saw flashes of her life, just short bursts moving back and forth through her mind.
It made her feel dizzy and she barely registered the hands that held her shoulders and lowered her back onto the sofa as those eyes held hers.
When Severus ended the brief Legilimens, Lou closed her eyes, she would have keeled over had not Severus still been holding on to her. He laid her down gently and turned to Albus, telling quietly what he saw.
“She will sleep for a while. Perhaps now would be a good time to explain to everyone exactly who she is.”
Albus explained to the others what he surmised was true, some of what was confirmed through the documents he now held in his hand.
“Lou was born; Louhi Melaina Nilsen- Black. She is almost fifteen years old. Her mothers name was Orvokki Nilsen. A young Finnish witch working in England for the Department of Mysteries between 1978 and 1982.
She and Sirius had a short affair around September and October of 1981. Not long after, Sirius was arrested for the murder of Peter Pettigrew. Neither Sirius or Orvokki knew at that time she was carrying his child. With Sirius in Askaban, Orvokki was too ashamed to admit who the father was and kept the pregnancy a secret. She was alone when she gave birth to Louhi in July 1982 and had no way of looking after her. Her parents would disown her of they found out, and she could not support herself and a young child if she was unable to work. Seeing no alternative, she named the babe, then deposited her with a muggle orphanage, believing the infant would have a better chance then if she were to try and bring her up alone. Louhi was placed in care and I believe, moved through several different foster homes before running away.”
All in the room remained quiet as they absorbed what the Headmaster told them. Lou was Sirius Black’s daughter, a daughter he’d never known he had.
Remus knew that if Sirius had known about her, he would have dragged her here kicking and screaming if he had to. Sirius would have loved her dearly, moved heaven and earth for her had he been given a chance. Things might have turned out so different if Sirius had the responsibility of his own child.
He turned to Albus. “Her mother, is there any way of finding out if she is still alive?”
“Arthur is looking into it as we speak Remus. As soon as he finds out, he will send word.”
“The Nilsen’s were a powerful pureblood family Headmaster.” Severus said. “If Black is … was her father, that would make her a pureblood also, yet I have seen no evidence of magical ability from her.”
“I think Severus, that you may need to look deeper. When she is recovered you can perform Legilimens again. Most likely her powers were blocked by her mother before she was left. If that is indeed the case, we may have a powerful witch on our hands. Do you know the meaning of her name Severus?”
“Melaina: It means dark, black, does it not?”
“It does, but her first name, Louhi, it is Finnish. A mythical name from the kalevala. Louhi was a queen of Pohjola, a witch with the ability to shape shift and cast the most powerful spells imaginable. The name also means trance, derived from the element Lovi. I shall give you and example.”
“Nouse loutoni lovesta, haon alta haltiani.
Translated roughly this means:- Rise my nature from the Lovi, rise my spirit from beneath the threshold. It is not a name commonly used among the Finn’s. The fact Orvokki gave her that name must have some bearing.”
Remus stepped forward. “There is something we have not thought of Albus.”
The Headmaster and several others looked at Remus questioningly.
“As Sirius’ daughter, she is also legal heir to this place, Harry no longer has claim to number twelve. It might also explain why she and Mrs Black got on so well eventually, did you notice the old woman stayed quiet when Lou was shouting in the hallway?”
Before anyone had chance to make comment, a tapping was heard at the window.
Tonk’s was closest to the window and lifted the sash to admit the owl. It flew straight to Albus, who in turn removed the missive from it’s leg before the bird took off back to the Ministry.
“It is from Arthur. Sadly Louhi’s mother is no longer with us. It would seem that shortly after returning to her native land, she was forced by her parents into an unhappy marriage with a most violent man, a Deatheater from one of Voldemort’s European branches. His name is not given, and sadly she did not survive one of his particularly violent outbursts.”
At the sound of a whimper, Albus indicated that no one was to speak of this further. The girl had had enough shocks over the last twenty four hours and she didn’t need any more yet.
As Lou began to waken, Molly said she needed to go to the Burrow. Moody said he had business to attend to.
“Severus.”
The Potions Master turned to where Remus was standing away from the sofa. “What is it Lupin?”
“Harry. He’ll be arriving here tomorrow from his aunt and uncles house. It could make things a little awkward don’t you think?”
“I do not see why, nothing has been actualy proven yet, although the evidence does seem irrefutable. As I see it, as yet there is no reason to make any of the youngsters aware of what we have learned today. That includes Miss Black.”
“Hermione’s sharp Severus, she will start asking questions and digging up information as soon as she hears Louhi’s surname. I know the name Black is not uncommon among muggles, but I am concerned.”
“Then we shall let the Headmaster decide what to do. Either we find a way to keep this secret, or we reveal all.”
Turning to Albus, the two men put forward the predicament.
“I shall ask Molly to keep them at the Burrow for an extra week before they come here. That way we can decide on the best course of action before they arrive. We still have to find out whether or not Louhi has in fact, got any kind of magical ability.
If, as I suspect, she did have her powers bound as an infant, then we may find ourselves dealing with a formidable young witch. A rather volatile one at that. Severus, we may have to take her to Hogwarts if that is the case, at least there we can keep her magic contained, up to a point.”
“When do you intend to test her Albus?” Remus asked.
“How long before she is well enough Severus?”
“She is well enough now Headmaster, though considering her penchant for running wild, it may be advisable to wait for a day or two. I would prefer that her leg heals a little more before she decides to run rampant around Hogwarts. I think also that we all need to be in peak condition ourselves, she is going to take some handling.”
“How about the day after tomorrow then. That will be her fifteenth birthday.” Remus said. “Now I come to think of it, she shares her birthday with Harry, he will be seventeen on the 31st.”
“How nice.” Severus put in sarcastically. “Now we shall have two hooligans taking up residence with us.”
“Severus that is hardly fair.” Albus admonished. “Harry is not a hooligan, and Louhi is just a very frightened little girl. Imagine what she must be feeling at this moment, how lost and alone she must be among us.”
“Point taken Headmaster, I just hope we are able to control her if she does turn out to be a witch.”
“Are you talking about me?” Piped a voice from the sofa. “What are you gonna do with me?”
Remus smiled at her as he moved in her direction. “Well Severus here is going to make your leg better. Other than that, we have no immediate plans, why?”
“I just wondered why you were all talking away from me like that, like you don’t want me to hear what you’re saying.”
“Perhaps Miss Black, because you are not the only one with affairs that are best kept private.” Severus told her.
Lou felt her cheeks burn. She wasn’t asking what they were talking about, just if they were talking about her. She wanted to know what was going to happed to her now. “I ..I didn’t mean …I wasn’t trying to pry in your business. I …oh forget it, it doesn’t matter.” She told him.
Remus sat on the chair facing her. He could see how insecure she was. Hell, he could almost feel it, her emotions at that moment were so tangible. “Lou listen to me. Whatever is decided, your opinion will be taken into consideration. All we want is for you to get better and stay here where it’s safe, in return, we only ask that you show a measure of respect for those around you. After all, we are trying to help you.”
Lou looked in turn at the three men and then looked at the satchel on her lap. “Okay.” She agreed. “I’ll try, I really will. It’s just that I’m used to looking out for myself, I won’t take something for nothing.”
“That is fair enough, but for now you will have to let others take the lead. You are still a very young girl, not yet of legal age either in our world or the muggle world.”
“I’m nearly sixte …”
“You are still fourteen years old, at least you are for the next couple of days. You have to learn how to be a child again Lou.”
