Chapter Four
-
24th Day of Ezriel, 964 Narqui Era
Castle Antiel of the City of du’Antiel, Shadow Empire
General Nishar was known as a powerful man. He was also known as a strict taskmaster with a battle-hard soul. It had been his duty, so many years ago, to abolish the traitors whom had turned against the great Shadow Lord as was it his duty to make sure that when his Lord returned, it would not be to a kingdom in ruin. He followed his duties with the fervor of one who was utterly and completely loyal to his king. To a true soldier such as him, it was unthinkable that anyone should dare turn against his Lord, especially a man such as Lord Harisu.
He remembered his childhood, so long ago as that had been, when he and his Lord had been first playmates, then friends and confidants. It was with each other that they had shared their first mating cycle, although both knew that nothing would come of it. They were too close of friends to be more than on-off lovers. Even then Nishar knew that Harisu was different than the rest of their kind. He was powerful, amazingly so, and he fit so well into the role of leadership it could have only meant he was born for it.
He was not the only one that shared that view. The whole empire had seen it since the day of his birth, when the color of his flight feathers had turned a brilliant silver instead of the black of the rest of his kind. Harisu shone with a power unmatched and with an unbelievably kind soul. Harisu had always believed that having great power was a burden and not a gift, and it was for this reason he was named Emperor.
It was also why on the day the last of the traitors had been caught and collected together in the city square, there was nothing short of a massacre. It had taken years for the streets to wash free of their deceitful blood.
As Harisu’s second in command, Nishar had then taken the reigns and returned Harisu’s beloved empire to how it had been before their Lord’s death. At least, as close as he could get it. Since his murder at the hands of those thrice cursed Angels, there had been a darkness over their kingdom. Without Harisu, the Shadow Empire would never hold the same wealth and prosperity it had. The empire needed Harisu to flourish. That went without question.
Recently, however, the darkness had been receding. Slowly, at first. It had taken several months to notice it, and when the denizens of the empire did notice, and hush had fallen over their kingdom. Now it was noticeable by every day that passed and murmurs had been rising from the tallest tower to the darkest alley. Always the same subject, always the same remark.
It was nearly two thousand years to the day.

The trumpets sounding from the West Towers heralded their arrival. Nishar, along with his second and third in command, as well as a small arm of servants and guards, met the small troop at the castle gates. They held the crest of Riolan, the Demon Kingdom, upon their riding beasts and formal garb, which had only been donned as a nicety; the Demons had been honored guests in Antiel since the end of the war.
At the head, wearing also the crest of the royal family, was a man Nishar had only heard about but had never had the honor to meet. General Thanos, brother to the Prince, had been much feared by the Angels before their extinction due to the merciless way he had slaughtered their kind. The fear they had held of him was preceded only by Prince Raevyn himself.
General Thanos was tall for a Demon, who were usually tall to begin with. He easily over-towered all in the courtyard at impressive six foot eight. Dark leather wings were folded smartly behind him and the eyes of his line, purely black save for their red pupils, briefly scanned the courtyard before falling upon Nishar, standing beneath the arches that sheltered the entrance to the castle. He dismounted once his entire troop had come to a stop in the courtyard and motioned for the rest of his men to do the same. Their riding beasts were led away immediately by several servants. Thanos lead his men towards the arches where Nishar waited, motioning for another servant to have the meeting hall prepared.
“It is an honor to greet you,” Nishar said, clasping forearms with his fellow General.
“I greet you with honor,” Thanos said, completing the ritual. They kept the strong grip for a moment, letting the magic of the ritualistic words of greeting prove that no falsities were held by either men, ensuring a peaceful meeting. Once the magic had settled, they released the hold. “I am Thanos, General of the Riolan First Regiment. I don’t believe we’ve had the pleasure of meeting.”
“I am General Nishar, Emperor-in-stead of Antiel. Please, join my companions and I inside for some food and wine, where we can make proper introductions.” Although both men knew exactly to whom they were talking to, it would have been improper decorum to use the other’s names without their introduction.
The trek to the meeting hall was silent, one that hesitated between comfortable and awkward. Once all were seated at the meeting table, however, they felt on equal footing and goblets of a deep purple wine was passed among them, as were platters of various delicacies. As per tradition, their guests held seats of honor and were served first; Harisu had been a firm believer of hospitality.
“We come bearing a missive from His Majesty, Prince Raevyn of Riolan,” said Thanos. “With me are Captain Jossen, commander of the second squadron of the First Regiment,” he indicated a wide-shouldered man with shaggy dirty-blonde hair and muddy brown eyes, “and Naashaer Ahiara, princess of Lunai, currently apprenticed to Soothsayer Arámia.” The woman on his other side had a long mane of dusty blue hair tied in braid down her back and blue-violet eyes; the jewel in her forehead as well as the iridescent sky-blue wings behind her gave her away as one from the Fae Kingdom.
“Well met,” Nishar said, bowing his head to each of them in turn. He indicated the woman to his right, snow-white hair pleated neatly down her back, then to blonde man at his left. “With me is Colonel Kira of His Lord’s Contingent One and Colonel M’Arak of His Lord’s Contingent Four.” Thanos returned the sentiment to them in kind. “This is not a visit of pleasantries, I presume,” Nishar continued, his tone slightly questioning.
Thanos nodded. “You would be right. As I’m sure you are aware, the dark of the moon heralds the passing of the two thousandth year of His Majesty the Emperor’s passing.” He took a sip of his wine to allow the Shadow Beings a moment of silent communication. “With the coming of the time, the shadows of our world have been unraveling. The signs have been growing ever clearer with each passing phase of the moon.”
“We’ve noticed this too,” spoke Kira, her pale eyes settling on the Demon General. “The darkness that veiled our beloved city is receding. Every day the city becomes more and more alive.”
“Is this to mean what we believe it means?” M’Arak questioned.
It was the Naashaer who answered. “Yes. The Fates are stirring and plotting. Even the lesser Prophets have felt their meddling in our Plane, as the powers grow eager and bloodthirsty.”
Nishar reclined back in his chair, eyes narrowed in thought. “So,” he murmured, dark eyes glittering in a manner both pleased and fierce. “Then war is upon us?”
“Indeed,” Thanos answered. “Prince Raevyn has sent us here to humbly ask for your alliance once more in the coming war. He wishes for you and yours to join him in battle at his side to reclaim that which has been taken from us. The Soothsayer has seen Harisu’s Awakening to be nigh.”
The Shadow Beings exchanged looks among themselves. Their eyes were bright and eager at the thought that they would once more have their Emperor where he belonged, as Lord of the Ancient Plane. It was a moment they had waited two thousand long years for, and the knowledge that their kingdom would soon reclaim it’s former glory made the decision only that much easier to make.
-
The vast army stared forth at the glittering portal that separated the Ancient Plane from the mortal realm. The bloodlust burned in their veins, making all restless with the anticipation. That shadows that covered the land for that last two thousand years rescinded to only a wisp of its former self. As the skies cleared to reveal a moonless night sky, a cry rang up from the front of the front of the group.
“Let the battle begin!” Raevyn roared, thrusting his sword high into the air. Cheers rang loudly, filling the night sky, and riding beasts reared as the battle cries filled the air. Soon, my beloved, we will crush those that have wronged us. We will take our place among the world. With you once more at my side, we shall be unstoppable. Fangs bared and blood pupils dilated with glee, the Prince of the Demons let out a haunting war cry that was echoed hundred-fold.
As one, the army marched forth.

AN2: I’ve created a new forum, one that actually suits my needs. You can find it here: http:// plunniecorral. proboards59. com. Just take and add what you need to. At this new board you can create a character to be used in this series, as although I love coming up with a bunch of characters and their backgrounds and all, it usually ends up taking a lot of my creativity that should be going to the story. So I decided, hey, why not let you guys come up with some people? I could sure use the help.
You can also use the characters you create in a Role Playing Game set in the Ancient Plane, where you can be any of the four species in the Plane. It’s set pre-Lover’s War to the end of DOMM Part One, before Raevyn and Harry reunite. If it sounds at all interesting, go ahead and give it a go!
Thanks for reading, you guys are great.
