Chapter 5
Severus’ next visit to the orphanage coincided with the events just after Albus Dumbledore had visited Tom and told him he was a wizard.
Seven year old Kathy was sitting on the end of his bed with a sullen look on her face. “But why can’t I come with you? I want to go to London too.”
“You just can’t alright. I have to go somewhere that your not allowed. At least I think you’re not. It might not be safe.”
“I’ll be with you, course I’ll be safe. Please Tomtom.”
“No. Now stop nagging me or I wont bring you a present back.”
He face lit up. “ A present? A real present all my own?”
“I might, but only if you shut up and leave me alone. I have a lot to do.”
Severus was surprised, clearly Albus was right about one thing. The young Tom Riddle seemed to have a genuine affection for the girl, though he doubted Tom was aware of what her unique… ability actually was. In fact he doubted the girl was even aware of it.
He dreaded to think of the devastation if she’d been allowed to attend Hogwarts. Even worse, the destruction that could have been brought about if she was under his influence when he became Lord Voldemort.
Still disillusioned, he forwarded the time turner several spins.
“Cripes Tomtom, how much stuff did you get? Wow, you got a bird. What you got a bird for?”
“It’s an owl, and he’s special. His names Nester and he bites the fingers off little girls who talk too much, so don’t touch him.”
Kathy eyed the bird warily from Tom’s bed and tucked her hands under her legs. “I wont go near him, ever. Did you get me a present like you promised?”
“I didn’t promise Kathy, but yes, I got you something. Here.” Tom passed the girl a small paper bag. “And don’t make a mess with it, if it gets on my bed I‘ll make you sorry.”
“You got me kaylie. Rainbow kaylie. Is it all for me?”
“Mm hm.”
“Thanks. You’re the best friend in the world you are. You want some?” She asked, offering the bag after she’d wet her finger and dipped in in. She was now happily sucking the stuff off her finger.
Tom screwed his nose up and shook his head. He had his own supply of sweets already, purchased from a shop in Diagon Alley and much superior to what he’d given Kathy.
“Why do you need all that stuff? What’s the owl for? An that big trunk? What you got a stick for? Ooh, is that a witches cauldron like in the picture book?”
“These are what I’ll need when I start school next month.”
“But we already get lessons, an you don’t have to have them anymore if you don’t want to. What school, where?”
“I’m not sure where it is, but I have a train ticket, so it must be a good way away.”
“Oh, you get to go on a train. A real train. Can I come too?”
“No. It’s a… special school for people like me with… special abilities.”
“Oh. You mean those things you can do, like moving stuff without touching it?”
“Yeah, and that isn’t a stick, it’s a magic wand. But you tell no one right, or I wont ever be you friend anymore. It‘s our secret.”
Kathy stared at him awestruck. “A magic wand.” She whispered. “I wont tell a living soul Tomtom, I promise. So does that mean you’re a fairy?”
Severus struggled to hold in a snort when she said that, and the look on Tom Riddles face was one he would not forget in a hurry.
“Don’t talk so damn stupid. I’m a wizard.”
“A wizard? Hey, I’m not stupid, and you swore, we’re not supposed to swear, it’s naughty.”
“Then keep your trap shut.”
“Do a trick.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I don’t want to, now shut up or get out.”
Kathy sat, the sullen look on her face again as Tom checked everything off on his supplies list and packed them neatly in his trunk.
Severus paid another visit on the day before Tom was due to leave for Hogwarts.
Kathy was once again in Tom’s room, but this time she was sobbing.
“Nooo, you can’t go, you can’t. Why do you have to stay there? Why can’t you come back each day? I’ll be on my own here. I don’t want you to go. Don’t leave me Tomtom, please.”
Tom’s expression was one that said he’d already explained, several times. “Because it’s too far away to come back here every day, besides, this place is a dump. Why would I want to come back?”
Kathy broke into a fresh round of sobs and Tom sat down next to her. “Look Kathy, apart from you, this place means nothing to me. I hate it here, I always have. But I’ll come back every summer to see you, and you have to promise you’ll be good and… well don’t go the same way as most of the other older girls here. You know what I’m talking about. If I come back and find you’re working the streets like the rest of the scum in this place, I’ll kill you Kathy. I mean it.”
“I w-wont Tomtom, I promise. I’ll st-stay nice, for you.”
“You better Kathy. Now stop snivelling, I said I’d take care of you and I will. You stay clean, and I’ll make you mine when I finish my schooling. You‘ll never have to see this place again.”
With the use of the time turner, Severus watched as each summer Tom Riddle returned to the orphanage. Kathy had two letters from Tom the first year he was away, though she was still terrified of the owl that brought them. Mrs Cole was replaced by a young couple after she was found dead one morning in her bed. She’d drowned in her own vomit after imbibing too heavily the night before.
Things improved slightly at the orphanage with the change of management, and towards the end of Tom’s schooldays, the government actually stepped in and officially took control.
It was Tom’s last summer and Kathy, who was almost thirteen, was again sobbing.
“But why aren’t you coming back again? I don’t understand. You promised me Tom, and I stayed clean for you. I’ve even got an honest job at the bacon factory on Carter street. I’ve saved some of what I earned so we can get married.”
Tom closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose. “Kathy you don’t understand, I don’t belong here, I’m different from you, from everyone. You, you do belong, you’re one of them. It… it wouldn’t work. Now go back to your own room and leave me alone. Find someone else, someone good who’ll give you what you need. I can’t be what you want me to be Kathy. I’m sorry. Now goodbye.”
He gently, but firmly manoeuvred her out the door as he spoke, and Severus had to watch as he closed the door in the girls face. He felt the small surge of magic as Tom warded the door against her, felt the heartbreak of the girl as she pressed her head against his door and sobbed quietly.
SS
Severus kept a close eye on her during the following years. She proved to be a pretty decent sort, worked hard and as soon as she was able, she rented rooms for herself. At that time, Sir Stephen Prince withdrew his monthly allowance from the orphanage and simply disappeared.
Eventually Kathy met a young man, they courted for several months and then married. She appeared to be happy and Severus watched as first one, and then another child appeared. Two girls barely nine months apart. She was always clean, the children too, and her husband would always start his days work in a clean shirt and polished boots.
Severus knew that fate would eventually intervene and destroy her world. She and her family would be among a group of random muggle families that were attacked when Lord Voldemort first came to power.
On the 5th August, 1958, the ‘Knights of Walpurgis’, later known as Death Eaters, attacked the home of Kathy, and David Ripley. David was killed as soon as he opened the front door, a flash of green light his last living memory. Both children were slaughtered in front of Kathy, who was held and made to watch, before being tied up and taken to an unknown location.
Five random homes around muggle England bore the Dark Mark above them that night.
Kathy never got to see the man responsible for ordering her families massacre, a glut of live muggles meant that her services were not required for the evenings entertainment, instead she was locked in a cell and used by several ’Knights’, each of whom left the cell feeling much the worse for wear but unable to figure out why.
One Knight, a vindictive wizard who liked the look of Kathy but was unable to fare any better than the others when he took his pleasure with her, punched her, effectively knocking her out and produced a time turner of his own and placed round her neck. He spun it and left the dirty cell.
By the time Kathy came round, she was able to stagger away from the now deserted building.
The year was 1990.
