  • Chapter 5

“Hey Severus,” Zohra said as she turned around to face her brother. Just as she was about to tell him how she was glad that he wasn’t going to hurt her, she saw the evil glint in his eyes. “Now, Severus, there is no need to get all scary and murderous on me.” Slowly she started to back away from her brother.

“Zohra…Zohra…Zohra. Did you truly think I would do something so senile as to let you get off easy? After you humiliated me in front of the school,” said Severus – every word dripping with malicious intent. Zohra was screwed and there was no two ways about it. Severus knew it…Zohra knew it…Even Storm knew it. That would explain why he suddenly disappeared once they’d entered the room.

“Severus. Can’t we please just talk this through? Come on, Brother. I didn’t mean for you to faint. I didn’t even know it was possible.” She knew her words were not getting through his head – Severus still approaching her with a murderous glint. ‘God damn it!! Where is that wolf when I need him? Familiars are supposed to protect their owners but what does he do? The lazy wolf runs away and hides. How typical.’

“This punishment is long over due, Zohra. Be prepared or anything at any time, Little Sister,” said Severus – taking out his wand unnoticed. I mean how else is a spy to survive if he can’t pull out his wand without people seeing. ‘Capillas coloro. Mauvese capillas.’ The wordless spell had been cast and his sister would not realize what spell it was until tomorrow.

Zohra felt the wave of magic. She was scared. What had her brother done to her?

“What did you do to me Severus?”

“That, Zohra is for me to know and for you to find out soon enough. Oh yes. Wingardium Leviosa!”

“Severus, you bastard put me down! Stop sppppiiiinnnnninngggg mmmmmmeeeeeee!” With that, he drop her down. It wasn’t the most gentle landing, but a landing nonetheless. “Ouch! That hurt, you jackass!”

“I see that 5 centuries in America has taught you nothing but curses and a new accent. Good-bye, Zohra.” With that, he left and slammed the door shut.

‘Good-bye? Severus never ever said good-bye to me before. What does it mean?’

Though her brother’s response worried her, she just shook off the thought and the ominous feeling that came with it.

    “STORM!”

Suddenly a white ball of fluff, well a gigantic ball of fluff came out of the bedroom and attacked Zohra. “So that’s where you have been. Why didn’t you come and protect me?”

/I was scared! Your brother was sending off some crazy vibes. I didn’t want to get caught in the middle and get myself hurt,/ spoke Storm telepathically through the link that binded them.

“Why you cowardous little wolf! What would you have done if he’d tried to murder me!?”

/Don’t be stupid, Zohra. I have always protected you from danger and I could sense that your brother was not going to hurt you in such a way./ This was in fact true. Storm’s protected Zohra when people have truly held murderous intentions toward her. Storm was one of those wolves that held the ability to sense emotions and energy that differed between real danger and fake danger.

“I know, Storm. I know. Let’s go to bed. I’m tuckered out and I really don’t want to think about what my brother did to me. I can’t believe I won’t know till tomorrow! That isn’t even the thing that irks me. What bugs me most is the fact that whatever spell he cast…He’s the only one that can remove it!” Disgruntled, Zohra huffed and folded her arms across her chest.

/Them. There are two spells on you and they last about 24 hours when not removed by the caster. And I’m pretty sure your brother isn’t going to remove them either,/ said Storm smartly.

“God, you just love proving me wrong don’t you? Don’t. Answer that. You are right, though.” With a sigh of exhaustion, Zohra turned to walk towards the bedroom. “Let’s just forget until tomorrow.” And just as Zohra was about to get into bed she yelled “Wait a minute! How did you know that there were two spells?”

/New ability I picked up from that shadow wolf last week. Really amazing power, huh?/

“Yeah it is. Can you tell what type?” Zohra asked curiously. It was the first time that Storm used this new ability and the fact that it was learned so soon meant something big, But, Zohra didn’t know what.

    *******************************************************************

The next morning was Monday. The first day of classes and Hermione was passing out the charts at the Gryffindor Table. Nothing unusual about that.

“So Harry, what do you have first,” Ron – much to Hermione’s disgust – asked while chewing on a leg of meat and staring at his schedule.

“Double potions. Just great isn’t it,” said Harry sarcastically.

“I bet it is when all you do is watch Snape’s arse all period long,” laughed Ron.

“RON!” yelled Harry. “You know you aren’t supposed to talk about that!”

“Sorry mate, I just couldn’t help myself. I mean…I can understand that as a gay man you would love Snape’s voice but, geeze. Even I’m gay and I don’t love it as much as you,” whispered Ron. Harry and Ron had both come out of the closet along with Hermione last year. Nobody really cared because in the wizarding world it did not matter what gender you lover was since love was the most extraordinary thing and should not be restricted. Corny I know but that’s what Hermione said when they’d been discussing coming out to the school at the welcoming feast. That had been a great riot.

At the moment, none of the Golden trio had lovers. Well…Hermoine did, but they didn’t know yet.

    Suddenly a shout was heard.

“SEVERUS TOBIS SNAPE!!!!!! I AM GOING TO KILL YOU!”

That was when Zohra was visible with what looked like a hairdresser gone blind. Her hair stuck out everywhere as if she either made a half-hearted attempt at an afro, or she went to war with her dryer…And lost. Badly.

Needless to say, she was livid.

“Now, Zohra, calm down and eat your breakfast. Classes start in an hour and you should see what you have this morning and such.” The Headmaster calmly continued eating his breakfast – noting that he’d having to ask the girl for her hair-dressing method. There was simply something divine in the method of chaotic madness.

“Okay, sir.” Zohra fumed all the way to the head table – hearing the snickers and eeps of horrified amusement.

    Back at the Gryffindor table.

    “Wow! That was….” started Ron.

“Weird,” ended Harry and Hermione at the same time.

“Yeah,” said Ron “Wonder why she didn’t just reverse the spell?”

“Oh, Ronald. Must I tell you everything? It is most likely a spell that can only be reversed by the caster. Hence, it would explain why she did not change it back herself,” Hermione explained in her best lecture voice. Honestly. She loved the boys dearly but sometimes they were just too thick for their own good. Well Ron, at least. Harry just seemed more naive than stupid.

At the Head table, nothing seemed to be happening after the crazy episode in the beginning. Keyword here being “seemed.” There was definitely something brewing in the minds of our two favorite siblings.

/How could you Severus? You know how much I hate my hair being untamed and color changing!/ However, the angry thought went through Severus’s mind without the slightest reaction of remorse.

/Deal with it, Zohra. It will go away in 24 hours. So don’t have a hippogriff./

/Severus! Change my hair back at once! I am getting sick and tired of it looking so rebellious!/

/No, I will not! You humiliated me in front of the whole school and this is part of your punishment. I came here to Hogwarts with a reputation of being ‘The-Evil-Greasy-Haired-Git,’ and now you changed it to ‘The-Evil-Greasy-Haired-Git-That-Faints!’/

    /Severus, your hair isn’t greasy./ Zohra’s mind voice softened.

/Enough! Don’t say anything else. Good bye./ And Severus abruptly left.

It was not that he had left that caused her shocked expression. It was the fact that when Severus said good-bye there had been an underlying notion of pain in his words. The emotions she felt in his head are what shocked her most, though. There was no feeling of warmth. His mind was cold but the reason, she didn’t know.

    *******************************
‘Of all the classes to have first, I get double potions with my fellow Gryffindors and Slytherins. I wonder if they will accept me. I hope I can find out what is wrong with my brother,’ Zohra thought with a mixture of anxiety and sadness.

She was the last one to enter class before her brother of course and everyone was suddenly staring at her, wondering what her next move would be. That meant she had approximately four minutes to find a seat. But where was she going to sit, she did not what to offend either of her houses. So instead she just looked at them and said “So… Lovely weather we’re having, isn’t it?”

The students all looked on incredulously. Then she heard the murmurs.

    “Weird question.”

“She is pretty hot, for an American.”

“Don’t you mean for a Snape.”

“God what atrocious hair! Snape really did a number on her.”

“I’m glad Snape isn’t my brother. I love my hair.”

    “What is she gonna do?”

“With us or the slimy Slytherins?”

    “With us or the Gryffindorks?”

“Have you seen her hair!? God poor girl!”

“Ummm, guys. I can hear every word you’re saying, you know. Also, I don’t want to sit somewhere and offend either one of the houses. I really do like both houses. Always been my favs, really. I’m glad I can be a part of both. However, with this petty rivalry, I don’t know what to do.”

“What are you calling petty rivalry?!” shouted Ron and Draco at the same time. They sneered at each other because they realized they had spoken at the same time.

While they were sneering at each other, Zohra noticed something and she was about to realize what type of connection they shared when her brother walked into the room with a sneer on his face. ‘Shit! I’m screwed now!’ thought Zohra.

“Why aren’t you all in your seats! Zohra! What the hell are doing not sitting at a table?” Severus barked. Standing up to his full height, her brother glared scathingly. “I do hope this doesn’t become a habit, because I assure you…Nepotism isn’t my strong suit.

“Well… I …” Zohra said when she was cut off by Severus.

“Forget it. I will be pairing people up anyway, so stand where you are until I let you know who your partner is,” said the Professor in an exasperated voice. “Let’s start, shall we…”

    “Draco and Weasley”

    “Potter and Zabini”

    “Granger and Snape”

    “Neville and Pansy”

And the list went on until everyone was paired with someone.

“Your potion today will be the Skelegrow. Madame Pompfrey needs them and if your potions are outstanding, it will go to the hospital wing with the rest that I, myself, have created,” said Severus with authority. “Well, what are you waiting for? The sky to fall? Get moving! NOW!”

Hermione left Zohra to get the table set up while she went to get the ingredients they would need.

“Well, here are all the ingredients. Let’s get chopping,” said Hermione.

“Yeah,” said Zohra. After a while, Zohra spoke. “Hey. Can I ask you a question, Hermione?”

“Sure, Of course you can, Zohra. What’s on your mind?”

“What’s up with this school rivalry thing with the Slytherins and the Gryffindors?”

“Well, truthfully, I’m not really sure. Apparently it has something to do with a fight between the two Founders and whatever it was, the houses have been at war ever since,” Hermione said matter a factly.

“I see. But, why not just let it go? I mean you guys are a new generation at Hogwarts. The war is over and you know that not all the Slytherins are evil. Why not take the initiative and stop the rivalry?” Zohra asked confusedly. “It seems like a load of bull to me, to fight over something you don’t know fully about.”

“I know. I really do want to stop the rivalry. There are others who want to stop it too, but some are just so set into it. We just don’t know what to do about them,” Hermione said sadly.

“There is something you aren’t telling me. However, I won’t push you for the answer. However, isn’t the house of Gryffindor for the brave and loyal? Come on, Hermione. Use some of that courage to do what you want and get everyone else to do it. I want to be part of both houses. I don’t want to choose, I don’t want to have to choose again.” Zohra held out her hand in an offer of friendship. Her eyes were glazed, remembering a thing from long ago.

“What are you talking about?” asked Hermione but knew not to pry if Zohra chose not to answer.

“I’ll tell you later but only if you’ll be my friend. So what do you say,” asked Zohra hopefully. She really did want a friend. She wanted loads of friends, but she really wanted a best friend. If she gains more best friends, it will make her happier.

Hermione had heard the hope in Zohra’s voice. She had already made the decision to befriend the girl when she first saw her last night. There was just some goodness about her that made Hermione know that she would be a great friend and the person the school needed to be united. Well, for the Slytherins and Gryffindors at least. “I’d love to be your friend, Zohra.” Hermione shook Zohra’s hand.

“Oh this is great! My first friend at Hogwarts. I can wait to make more. I can’t wait to tell Se…” Zohra cut herself off. At first, she was excited but just as she was about to say her brother’s name her demeanor changed.

“Hey, are you okay,” asked a concerned Hermione.

“Nevermind. It’s not important,” said Zohra. She could tell Hermione didn’t really believe her.

“Okay, if you say so,” she said unconvinced. “So, why is your hair so crazy?”

At that Zohra laughed. “My brother was pissed last night and did this. He put a perpetual bad hair day spell and an ever color changing spell. I can’t even remove it because he made sure that only he could. The bastard,” Zohra said lovingly and sadly. “He knows I hate my hair being ruined like this. He made sure it would last 24 hours too. Gosh I hate it. Oh well.”

“It was really funny when we all saw it at the Great Hall. You are quite amusing. Especially with everything you said last night.”

“So you were the one who heard everything I said?”

“Oh no. Harry heard you. He just told Ron and me about why he was laughing during the feast.”

“Well, I guess it would be a good start to make friends with him too.”

“Yeah it would but,” suddenly Hermione turned serious. And Zohra knew all fun and games were over. “I just want you to know that Harry, Ron, and I are all gay and if you have a problem with that. there may be a load of trouble. Because even though the wizarding world is very accepting there are sometimes people who are not.”

“No, no, no. I don’t have a problem with people being gay. I actually think guys’ going at it together is hot. However, girls’ going at it doesn’t really do it for me. No offense, though.” Said Zohra chuckling herself now.

Hermione started to laugh too. “None taken. Between you and me, I too think guys’ going at it is pretty hot.” That got both of them going pretty loudly.

Severus looked up at them with a sneer. “What are you two laughing about? 10 points from Gryffindor. Have you both even completed the potion?”

They were about to say no when they looked back at their cauldron and realized with a start that they had finished making the potion. “Umm yeah we did Brot… I mean Professor.” Said Zohra when Severus gave her a glare.

“It seems that you have. Fine. Bring it up and I will pack it, Mrs. Granger.”

“Hey Prof…” Severus left – ignoring Zohra before she could even get her question out.

“What was that,” Hermione asked concerned.

“I don’t know,” Zohra said sadly.

    After class, Hermione stopped Zohra.

“Hey, do you want to come up to our common room after dinner for a while?”

That picked Zohra up right out of her gloom.

“Yeah, sure! That would be awesome.”

“Okay. See you then. Oh. Do you know the password?”

    “Yeah, I do.”

After that, Hermione left for her next class, and Zohra went off to Charms with her fellow Slytherins. ‘I really hope they like me’ was Zohra’s last thought before she entered the room.

    Review Angst :

Hello, everyone! This is myskeletalacquaintances (blackfire’s beta) (XD A little advertising there. ^_^). First, I would like to thank everyone for reviewing this story. I for one know she really appreciates it. Therefore, just in case she hasn’t let you know (-_- grrr) I’m here to tell you! ^_^

On another note, I’d like to mention one more thing. I’m not going to call out any names or anything like that, but I want everyone to know that when you’re writing something (whether it be for fanfiction, school, or anything else) your first priority should be your opinion. If you don’t like what you’re writing, don’t expect anyone else to. You also have to have confidence in what you’re writing. I’m not saying have blind confidence, but don’t just automatically shoot it down by saying, “oh…this is stupid…Everyone’s going to hate it…Oh look. Someone here doesn’t even like my word choices!” It’ll drive you crazy and you’ll never want to write again, because you can’t deal with the negative feedback.

There’s nothing wrong with negative feedback (in my opinion. Some people just plain don’t like it, so that’s their thing. They usually tell you at the beginning of the story.), however, there’s a difference between negative feedback and just being plain old rude. When reviewing a story, you don’t tell the writer what to do. I don’t mean to sound like an ogre when saying this, but it’s not your story. You can make suggestions, and you can say what you did and didn’t like, but don’t say something like “Oh, this is stupid. You should change it.” 1) You lower the writer’s self-esteem by belittling their work, and 2) It’s just plain not your story.

Now as I said before, I’m not going to go mentioning any names (those of you curious can just go look through the reviews), but it’s just something that really grated against my nerves.

    Yours,
    Myskeletalacquaintances
