Behind the Veil

Chapter 5 ~ Behind the Veil

Korm navigated his way to the main alcove of the crystal palace and found Solaris, Lettina and Morthan sitting in ivory thrones, conversing in low tones. This area was located quite a distance from where Hermione was sequestered. Just as the female Veela were all fair-skinned, with curling reddish-brown hair and attired in shimmering white dresses, all the males were tanned, well-muscled, blue –eyed and blonde-haired. They wore shimmering white togas.

Morthan looked over at Korm.

”Has the new arrival been Veeled?” Morthan asked Korm.

”Yes, she's been prepared, Morthan. It was surprisingly easy,” Korm replied, giving a lascivious grin. “Humans are so gullible.”

”Let’s be glad they are,” Morthan said, frowning slightly, “and so susceptible to believing the illusions around them.”

Suddenly, the area around them lost its silvery sheen, revealing a stony, barren landscape, devoid of anything green. This dismal area was the last remaining bastion of the Veelas’ territory. The aura of the human world was constantly expanding, taking over the fey areas. The story Hermione was told about Veeleria was a lie. There were no crystal palaces and places of perfect contentment in the world of Veela. Only a shrinking, dying, lifeless expanse closing in around them. It was only here that the Veela could create illusions of beauty and it was quite draining. Yes, their world was shrinking, and what was worse, the Veela were dying out.

The three Veela were now sitting on stones, both Morthan and Korm losing their beauty as the illusion fell. Instead of being muscular and blonde, they were thin, sallow, dressed in tattered tunics, lesions criss-crossing their bodies, reflecting the degradation of their once beautiful land. For some reason as the Veela territory shrunk, losing its lushness, only the male Veela were visibly affected, losing their own beauty while the females retained theirs. It could have been that the males were more connected to the earth than the females. It’s said that males are more physical and females more emotional after all. This might have made all the difference for the Veela.

The Veela males were as hideous in form as the Veela females were lovely. If Hermione had only seen what the men who shagged her really looked like, she would have been screaming in horror. But they all appeared so desirable that Hermione allowed it to happen. It’s true that the “beautiful” people of this world get away with acts that “average” people cannot.

Still, there was a purpose to the Veelas’ manipulation of Hermione, of the surroundings, of everything.

And that purpose was: Survival.

Male and female Veelas could not breed with each other. With a lifespan of five hundred years, originally, they were born from nature, phasing into existence fully grown, their souls tied to the green, growing things of the earth, never experiencing childhood. And as nature was wont to do, there were more females than males. Although physically, they had the same internal organs and reproductive systems as humans, the females remained barren. Sexual interaction between Veelas was for pleasure only. And no new Veela had been created in over two hundred years. It was as if Nature abandoned them for the new species taking over. Humans.

But legend had it that a human male once forced himself on a surprised Veela, and impregnated her, the nymph bearing a child. But the child died because she had no idea how to care for it. It was an opportunity lost. As time passed and the seriousness of their situation became apparent . . . it was decided that the females would seek out human males of great power and bear children for them, children who would then be raised Veela and strengthen their race.

So, for the past two hundred years the Veela had been attempting to breed with wizards in order to bear these powerful children. After a generation or two, it was hoped that they could rise to their former glory and strength. Despite the belief all Veelas were sluts, they actually were promiscuous for a very good reason. Survival of their race.

Unfortunately, despite all their efforts . . . it appeared the females couldn’t conceive children by men, though they kept trying. And male Veela were so blasted ugly, they couldn’t attract human women of any type . . . at least not those in the Wizarding World. Besides, they couldn’t leave their realm. Only female Veela could walk in the world of men. And humans could not perceive or enter their abode under normal conditions. Sometimes a rift appeared in the fabric of reality and a human might stumble upon the land, but the visitation was short-lived, often only a matter of minutes.

Until Hermione, that is. Her little accident made it possible for her to exist tangibly among the Veela. But she wouldn’t be able to remain for long. No human ever did.

When Solaris and Lettina discovered what had happened to Hermione, they immediately took advantage of the situation. Veela were volatile, but they were far from stupid. At last, there was a human female that could actually enter their realm because of a freak accident, or Providence if one believed in such things. Making up a lie off the cuff was quite simple for the nymphs to do. Magical folk knew very little about Veela after all.

Hermione had been affected by the blast and might have absorbed a bit of the Veela influence, but there was no possible way she could turn completely from human into fey. They had a different background all together, having been created by a different evolutionary process. The visual effects Severus and the healer witnessed were temporary at best, but lasted long enough for the shrewd Veelas to gain permission to take Hermione to their realm.

They weren’t sure how long she could remain, but they only needed her for a short while.

Long enough for the males to try and impregnate her.

Repeatedly.

Perhaps, it would take.

Even if it didn’t, it was worth a shot or ten.

A/N: Dastardly Veela. All right. A historical chappie. I usually don't like to have a chapter cover SO much background, but this was what it took. I removed the “perfect world, perfect people” factor. I've found normally, when something seems too good to be true, it is. Lol. Still, Veeleria was the perfect setup for this chapter and hopefully someone will pick it up again. It can go anywhere from here.
