Severus Snape appeared at the gate to Malfoy Manor with a loud pop and strode quickly toward the front door. It was Halloween, and most of the students had gone to Hogsmede, so he thought he would pay a quick visit to his best, only friend.
Before he could knock on the large oak door, it opened and James Potter stepped outside wearing tattered leather pants and a black cloak. He smiled up at Severus with dull, almost lifeless blue eyes before hurrying away.
“Is it that time of year again?” Severus commented to Lucius who was putting his most precious possession back in his vault.
“Yes,” Lucius nodded, closing the vault door with a wave of his wand. “And I’m almost out of hair. I suppose I might have to start only doing it every other year.”
“Why do you do this to yourself?” Severus asked, seating himself in one of the chairs by the fireplace.
“I don’t know,” Lucius admitted as took two crystal glasses from the cabinet by the window. “It isn’t the same by any stretch of the imagination. All the whores do is give me mediocre sex. They don’t throw food at me. They don’t hit me with a rolled up newspaper. They don’t make smart assed wise cracks. They don’t do that little thing with their tongues on my ear…” The blonde shivered, spilling a little brandy on the desk.
“Oh, I can imagine how you’d miss getting hit with a rolled up newspaper,” Severus commented sarcastically as he took the drink from his friend.
Lucius glared at the potions master as he sat in the chair beside him. “Enough of my troubles, to what do I owe this visit?”
“I just needed to get away from… things,” Severus answered as he downed the brandy on one gulp.
“Ah, yes, I heard about Lupin being the new Dark Arts teacher,” Lucius nodded sympathetically. “I honestly don’t know why Dumbledore doesn’t just give you the bloody position. You haven’t given him any reason to distrust you.”
“I don’t think it’s a matter of trust. I’ve asked him dozens of times why he doesn’t just give me the position. And every time he tells me it’s because he doesn’t think he could replace me as the potions teacher. I really think there’s more to it.”
“Undoubtedly,” Lucius agreed. “It’s no secret that I never liked that man. I don’t understand why you don’t just quit.”
“Because teaching has become my life, as pathetic as that sounds. I’m not sure I could do something else. Although, I’m getting more tempted by the day. Just dealing with Harry has been difficult enough. Now I have to play nice with Lupin. I half wonder if Dumbledore is trying to torture me!”
Lucius nodded and stared blankly into the fire. He understood completely how Severus felt about Harry Potter. He found his mind wandering back to a little over a year ago, when he himself had come face to face with ‘the boy who lived’.
He had taken Draco to Diagon Alley to buy his school supplies for the upcoming school year. He cursed under his breath when he saw how crowded the bookstore was. It was then that he noticed the posters all over the front window that announced Guilderoy Lockhart was there and signing autographs. Realizing that he had picked a bad day to try and buy books, he had told Draco that they were going home and that they would pick up his books another day. Maybe he would even send a house elf for them. But Draco had insisted that they not skip buying books. They were already there, and he didn’t see any sense in leaving before he had everything he needed.
Eventually he had given in and sent his son into the crowded book store alone. He stayed outside and waited, still not wanting to deal with the throngs of witches and wizards milling about.
Then he noticed the Weasley family enter the store. It seemed that fortune was smiling on him after all. He had the perfect opportunity to somehow slip Voldemort’s old school diary to young Ginny Weasley. That way he could kill two birds with one stone. If the Weasley girl was caught killing mudbloods, well, that wouldn’t bode well for her father’s Muggle Protection Act.
He waited a moment or two before entering the store so it wouldn’t look like he was following them. As it turned out, his timing had been perfect. The children were just making their way through the crowd to leave. Draco was being his usual self and making wisecracks.
And there he was… The famous Harry Potter. He immediately froze in his tracks, his breath catching in his throat. Severus had told him how much the boy resembled James, but he hadn’t been prepared for this. All he could see as he returned the boy’s cold gaze was James glaring at him.
Inside he had been a shaking mess, but had somehow managed to keep his cool composure. It had taken him a moment to remember what he had come to do, but he was able to covertly sneak the book into Ginny’s cauldron. Of course only minutes later he had gotten into a fight with Arthur Weasley, but it had been worth it.
Lucius shook his head and brought himself out of his daydream. Severus was watching him with an amused grin. “Should I leave you alone with your thoughts?”
Lucius downed the rest of his drink and sat the glass on his desk. “You probably should get going. You need to get back in time for the feast.”
Severus nodded and got to his feet. “Well, this was an interesting visit to say the least.” He gave his friend a little nod and headed for the door.
Lucius head straight for his bedroom. A wicked grin appeared on his lips when he saw that there was just enough polyjuice left for one more go. He hoped that Travis would be available. That feisty little whore was probably as close as he would ever get to the real thing.

A black dog trotted up to a run down looking cottage. The dog transformed back into a man, and went inside.
Sirius found James sitting in front of the fireplace watching the dying flames dance. He seemed rather entranced. “Sirius, I could strangle you,” he murmured. “Why do you keep venturing out like that? Don’t you understand how dangerous it is for you?”
Sirius sat down beside his friend. “I had to try and catch a glimpse of Harry,” he confessed. “Harry and Wormtail are the only things I think about anymore.”
“I told you to stay here until I had everything taken care of. Coming back from the dead isn’t easy you know.”
“I can’t help it if you don’t care enough about Harry to try and make contact with him.”
As soon as the words left his mouth, Sirius felt a fist hit him in the face. He rubbed his now bruised cheek and whimpered, knowing he deserved it. “I’m sorry James,” he apologized. A single solitary tear fell down James’ cheek. “Did you bring me jelly slugs?” he asked, changing the subject.
James nodded and pointed to a small brown paper bag on the table. “I looked for him in Hogsmede you know… I didn’t see him. He probably didn’t have his permission form signed.”
“Well I didn’t get to see him either,” Sirius grumbled. “I wasn’t able to get into the common room. That stupid fat lady wouldn’t let me in without the password, but I showed her…”
James gave a little chuckle and shook his head. “You haven’t changed a bit. I’m sure that there’s probably a lot of commotion up at the school right about now.”
“I’m sure there is,” Sirius grinned as he wrapped an arm around his friend. “You do believe that I didn’t kill Wormtail don’t you? He framed me…”
“I believe you,” James assured him. “I always knew something wasn’t quite right with him. I just wish that the rest of you would’ve listened to me.”
“I don’t think I could ever express to you how sorry I am,” Sirius sighed. “But it’s getting late. We should go to bed.”
