5:
Hannah Who?
“Who’s
Hannah Montana?” Harry asked her with a frown and confused
look. She couldn’t help but laugh and shake her head.
“She’s
me, well; I’m her I should say. I created this big secret to
keep people from knowing that I was a teen pop star so I could have a
normal life. No one in my normal life knew I was Hannah Montana
except my family, Lilly and Oliver and no one in my Hannah life knew
I was Miley Stewart the biggest dork in our school, well next to
Oliver.” She knew that here in the wizarding world she was a
nobody. She was sure that they had their own set of teen pop
sensations or rock stars to idolize. She watched as Harry reached up
and rubbed the back of his neck trying to take in what she had just
told him.
“Okay,
so you used live two separate lives?” He questioned looking
down at her as she nodded her head. He knew that they should hurry
and get into the common room before Filch came down the corridor and
took them to McGonagall but he couldn’t stop staring at her. If
what she was saying was true, that she could keep a secret like
having a double life then she would be as sneaky as Hermione. Still
how that girl had managed to steal those ingredients in their second
year for the polyjuice potion he’d never know.
“Yeah,”
she told him and he watched as she pulled be bottom lip between her
teeth and bit down on it. He found himself wanting to kiss her, he’d
only just gotten his first kiss last year with Cho but Miley was so
much different. She made him want to take action, want to think about
things that he normal only thought about when he was asleep. It was
crazy to think that he actually wanted to know what the skin of her
legs felt like under his hands and he’d known her for less than
three days now.
“Come
on.” He said and turned on his heels toward the portrait of the
fat lady. She stared down at them for a moment before asking for the
password.
“Cream
Puff.” Harry said shortly and she swung open to reveal the
hidden entrance to the Gryffindor common room. He stepped back and
let Miley climb in first before following her closely. They emerged
in the common room to find it more empty than usual. Harry saw
Oliver, Lilly, Ron, Hermione and a very disgruntled looking Jackson
sitting by the fire as he and Miley started over toward them. Jackson
was pretending to read a textbook but was actually watching Lilly out
of the corner of his eye. Harry could read it plainly on his face
that he liked the younger girl; he’d often used the
hiding-behind-a-book tatic when he’d had a small crush on
Hermione in their third year. But now she was with Ron and he
couldn’t be happier. Most of the time.
“What’s
up?” Miley asked as she sat down beside Lilly who was slinging
Jackson looks out of the corner of her eye as well. She sniffed and
folded her arms over her chest when he stuck his tongue out at her.
“You’re
brother’s being a pain in my arse.” She said shortly and
crossed her legs leaning back against the soft cushions of the
overstuffed loveseat she and Miley were sitting on. Since they’d
found out they were witches and wizards Jackson had been acting
differently than before. He kept saying things to her and trying to
start up an intelligent conversation. Who would have thought that the
two of them would find something like a book they had both read
interesting enough to spend more than a couple of seconds talking
about it. They had just finished up a debate over wither Albus
Dumbledore or some guy named Elphias Doge had found the twelve uses
for dragons blood. Of course Hermione had been glad to jump in and
clarify that Jackson was right, it had been Albus Dumbledore.
“What
did he do now?” She asked but Lilly just shook her head. She
didn’t feel like talking about Jackson, at least not with him
seating only a couple of feet away from her. He’d been staying
in close proximity to her most of the night, at dinner, walking up to
the Gryffindor tower, and now he was sitting as close as possible to
her in the common room without being right next to her.
Never
before, when they were just normal teenagers, had he acted like he
was the slightest bit interested in her. She had always been Miley’s
best friend and the annoying little skater girl who was all the time
over at their house. Even though Lilly had had a crush on Jackson for
years she’d never said anything to Miley about it nor had she
told anyone else. Her mother had asked her about it once but she’d
denied it. She’d spent the last few years denying what she
wanted and now he seemed to have developed a slight interest in her.
She looked over at Ron and Hermione who were sitting the closest to
the fire and felt a twinge of jealousy. The two looked so cute
together. Hermione had her head lying on Ron’s knee as she sat
in the floor with a book in her hands. Ron was petting her head and
twisting strands of her hair around his finger as he looked off into
space smiling. Looking over at Jackson she had to surpass a sigh, she
wanted to set that way with him, to be with him. In so many ways she
knew that it was wrong. She was his little sister’s best
friend. They weren't even supposed to have a relationship, a
friendship maybe, but not the kind of relationship that Lilly wanted.
She wasn’t supposed to fall in love with him.
“You
alright Lil?” Miley asked from her side and she wheeled around
and nodded.
“Yeah,
I was just thinking.” She said with a fake yawn. “I think
I’m going to head up to bed.” She rose and started toward
the steps that lead to the girl’s dormitory. She looked over
her shoulder as she reached the bottom. She looked at Jackson who was
watching her and felt a ping of sadness. Was it normal for a girl of
her age to want a boy two years older than her to accompany her to
bed? Was it normal to want to lay down with him and have him hold her
in his arms? Was it normal to ask herself if it was normal? Lilly
felt like she was being pulled in a hundred different directions at
the same time and knew that one day soon, if she didn’t
straighten herself out she’d be ripped apart and be left in
pieces.
“Goodnight
everyone.” She called as she started to climb the stairs and
heard the group mutter goodnight as well. She opened the door to the
bedroom that she would be sharing with several other girls and
stepped inside, quickly finding her bed and throwing herself down
upon it. Tears leaked from her eyes and she sobbed softly into her
pillow listening as someone snored loudly in their sleep.

“What
was wrong with Lilly?” Miley wheeled around on Jackson who
dropped his book and cursed.
“Damn
it Miles. Don’t start yelling at someone when they’re
trying to read. You scared the blood hell out of me.” He
scowled picking up his book and fixing the pages that had bent in the
fall. He frowned as he stared down at the pages pretending to read
but not really taking in any of the content. He was thinking about
the look on Lilly’s face when she’d stood at the bottom
of the stairs looking at him. She’d looked sad and lost, like
she’d wanted to say something to him but hadn’t been able
to find the courage. He knew what that felt like. There were so many
things he wanted to say to her but they just wouldn’t come out.
When he was around her his tongue tied itself into knots. It seemed
easier to disguise his love for her as annoyance and just pretend
that he didn’t give a blue damn about her.
When
they’d just been normal teenagers he hadn’t noticed Lilly
at all. But here in the wizarding world things seemed different. When
he looked at her he didn’t see a ditzy little freshman who hung
around with his sister all the time but he saw a smart strong young
woman who was on the edge of blossoming into adulthood. He knew that
he’d changed since finding out that they were different. This
was like a second chance to fix all the screw-ups he’d had in
his life. This was his chance to start over again and be the smart
kid instead of the class clown. Oh, he didn’t plan to become
all work and no play, no, there would still be time for jokes and
laughter but it would come after his homework was done and after he’d
finished his assignments. This time around there would be no party
like there’s no tomorrow attitude, this time it would be work
hard, play later.
“I
think I’m going to go up.” He said closing his book and
starting for the stairs. He looked at Miley as he passed her and knew
that she wanted to say something but didn’t. There would be
time for her to interrogate him later about Lilly’s odd
behavior tonight. “Goodnight.” He called as he started up
the stairs and received a group mutter of the like.
He
opened the door to the dormitory he’d be sharing with about
three other boys and walked inside. He didn’t light a candle to
see where he was going, instead he pulled out his wand and light the
tip. The light was dim and he quickly found his bed. His trunk
sitting at the end waiting for him. He quickly opened it and withdrew
his PJ’s and toiletries before heading to the bathroom that was
connected to their dorm room. He showered and dressed quietly before
moving back into the room.
Noticing
that there was no place to lay his dirty clothes he shook them out
and piled them on the floor between his nightstand and his bed.
Extinguishing the tip of his wand he laid it on the nightstand and
crawled under the thick maroon blankets. He pulled the curtains
around his bed and sighed burying his head in the fluffy pillows that
were arranged there. Turning over he looked up at the maroon canopy
that hung above his head and thought about Lilly.
He
thought of her long blonde hair and her pretty brown eyes that always
seemed to sparkle. He missed their sparkle. The last time he’d
seen it was when she’d been talking to Neville at dinner and
he’d been telling her about Quidditch but then he’d tried
to talk to her and it had ended up as a fight. He didn’t even
remember what they were fighting about. But he was sure it was
something stupid. In the distance he heard the sound of an owls hoot
and of the wind blowing through the trees in the Forbidden Forest. He
thought for a moment he heard the sound of Lilly’s laughter. He
turned his head and looked around the room hoping that she would jump
out of the shadows and into his arms. But it was just his imagination
and his heart playing tricks on him.
He
laid his head back down and closed his eyes feeling the need for
sleep over take him. He hadn’t slept much in the last couple of
days. He’d been too excited about going to Hogwarts to sleep
and had spent most of his time reading. He remembered one time when
Lilly had came and sat with him at the ice cream parlor in Diagon
Alley. They hadn’t spoken or even looked at each other, other
than a few glances over the tops of their books but there had been a
kind of silent companionship between them. Then the next day they
were back to arguing and fighting over stupid stuff.
Finally
the dark world of dreams over took him and closed in around him. As
he slept he dreamed of Lilly and her laughter. There was even the
comforting thought that maybe she was dreaming about him as well. But
he knew better than to hope for things that were utterly impossible.
And there was no chance in hell that Lilly was falling in love with
him.

The
next morning Lilly was woken to the bright sun shinning into the room
from the window beside her bed. She groaned and threw a pillow over
her head and clamping it down. She could hear movement all around the
room and had no desire to get up and join in on the mornings
activities. She curled into a ball and was just about to drift back
off when Miley came over to her bed.
“Lil,
come on. You’ve got to get up. We have to go down for
breakfast.” Lilly growled at her as she grabbed at the pillow
over her head. Suddenly Lilly was floating upside down hanging by her
ankle. Her robes had fallen down around her face and she quickly
reached to push them back up to see who had cast the spell on her.
She found Miley with her wand pointed at her and a serious look on
her face.
“Fine,
I’m awake.” Lilly grumbled her face turning red as all
the blood in her body rushed to her head. Miley muttered the counter
charm and Lilly dropped back down to the bed in a hump of robes and
limbs.
“Who
thought you that?” She asked as she staggered to her feet and
reached for the clasp of her robes that she had fallen asleep in.
Miley smiled at her and turned back toward her bed which was right
beside Lilly’s. She reached inside her trunk and pulled out her
own clothes before answering Lilly.
“Harry.”
As she said the name a smile spread across Miley’s lips and she
couldn’t help but sigh. Lilly noticed and quickly walked over
to her bed sitting down watching as Miley took off her night robes.
“You
have a crush on Harry don’t you?” She accused and Miley
opened her mouth to deny it but Lilly reached on the bedside table
that separated their beds and pointed it at Miley. “I’ve
been reading our Defense Against the Dark Arts book and I know a few
things okay.” Miley blushed and reluctantly admitted that she
did indeed have a slight crush on Harry the boy wonder.
“It’s
not because he’s famous, like all those other girls. There’s
something about him that makes me like him so much. I can’t
explain it. It’s just something I’ve never felt before.”
Lilly nodded and looked a little sad. She knew that she should have
been happy for Miley. This was the first boy she’d really liked
since she’d found out what a horrible person Jake was. But she
couldn’t shake the feelings of jealousy over her having a real
chance with the boy she liked. Lilly sure as hell didn’t have a
real chance with Jackson.
“I’m
actually really glad that you like Harry. He seems like a nice guy.”
Lilly told her as she hopped off of her bed and went over to retrieve
her clothes for their first day. The two dressed in silence, neither
knowing what to say to the other. Miley wanted to probe Lilly about
her bad mood last night and Lilly wanted to tell Miley about her bad
mood and her crush on Jackson but neither wanted to offend or upset
the other. So the subject went without discussion and after they were
completely dressed with their book bags on their shoulders they
headed for the common room.
Harry,
Oliver and Jackson were waiting on them when they came down the
stairs both smiling. Lilly walked past them and Jackson hurried to
catch up with her while Miley was left to pull up the rear with
Oliver and Harry. She stared up at her brother and best friend a look
of confusion and annoyance on her face.
“What
is wrong with those two?” She asked Oliver who shrugged and
continued to look around the hallway apparently searching for
someone. She looked over at Harry who was smiling and walking a
little more confident than before. “What about you? I don’t
suppose you’d know?” He looked down at her still smiling
though she saw him swallow and take a deep breath before answering.
“I
think that they like each other.” Miley came to a halt in the
middle of the hallway and several seventh years pushed by her
muttering curse words under their breath.
“What?”
She yell-whispered to Harry grabbing him by the arm and pulling him
toward the wall so that they wouldn’t be in the way of anymore
sleepy and annoyed seventh years. He looked shocked and pulled his
arm away from her grip fast enough that she was a little offended but
there were bigger fish to fry here. Jackson and Lilly didn’t
like each other. Jackson was her older brother and Lilly was...well,
Lilly was like her sister. There was no way that they had a crush on
each other, no way in seven hells.
“It’s
just a theory. In the common room last night Jackson was sitting
close to her but not to close and he sat right beside her at dinner
and looked really annoyed that she was talking to Neville so much. I
think he likes her and doesn’t want to admit it because he
thinks you’d be mad at him or something. It’s not
uncommon…” But he trailed off as Miley crossed her arms
and stared out the high window at the clear blue sky with very little
wind. Perfect Quidditch weather, he though quickly. But he knew he’d
lost her attention when she began to pace in circles and mutter to
herself.
“But
she’s my best friend. How can Jackson have a crush on my best
friend? That’s like a big no-no.” Harry tilted his head
and studied her for a moment not sure what else to say. He figured he
should just turn and walk away, leaving her with her thoughts but she
quickly pulled herself out of it.
“No,
I refuse to accept that my best friend has a crush on my older, dork
brother or vise versa.” She turned and she and Harry started
toward the Great Hall once again. She looked around for any sign of
Oliver, Lilly and Jackson but couldn’t see them. Miley had
wanted Lilly to walk with them so she wouldn’t say anything
stupid to Harry but she’d ran off with Jackson. Surpassing a
sigh she looked around at the older students who were mingling in the
hallways. It was so different from Seaview High in California. The
students seemed much happier and there were no teachers out lurking
around waiting for someone to do something wrong so they could
enforce their authority. When they turned the corner to descend the
marble staircase Hermione saw a man dressed completely in black waltz
from the Great Hall and toward the dungeons. The mans cloaks billowed
behind him and the students who were laughing and joking in the
hallways pressed themselves against the wall to get out of his way.
“Who’s
that?” Miley asked as she watched the man disappeared around a
corner and one boy make a rude hand gesture toward the place where he
disappeared and the man swept back around and began to scowled the
boy.
“That
will be a hundred points from Hufflepuff for rudeness to a staff
member and a weeks worth of detention with me in the dungeons.”
With that he turned and disappeared again Miley raised her eyebrows
and watched the boy refrain from giving the hand gesture again.
“That’s
Professor Snape, he teaches Defense Against the Dark Arts. He’s
head of the Slytherin house and believe me, it shows. We don’t
have him till Wednesday so there’s not much to worry about till
then.” They entered the Great Hall and went straight for the
Gryffindor table. Miley heard more whispers as they passed and
clinched the strap of her bag. She hated it that people stared at her
when she was with Harry. It was like they expected something to
happen between them right there in front of them.
They
found the whole group sitting close to the middle of the table.
Oliver and Ginny were laughing while Oliver stuffed his face with
food. Jackson and Lilly were sitting with their heads turned in
opposite directions and weren’t speaking to each other. Jackson
had taken an interest in a young female Gryffindor who was in her
fourth year and Lilly was talking to Neville but kept throwing dirty
looks over her shoulder at Jackson who would return them. Maybe they
did like each other. Ron and Hermione were in a rather heated
discussion that Harry and Miley decided not the interrupt.
“So…”
She said trying to think of something to talk about. She then she
remembered that he was the captain of the Quidditch team. “So
how’s the Quidditch team looking this year?” She asked
reaching for a bowl of eggs and spooning some out onto her plate.
Harry paused in drinking some pumpkin juice and looked at her.
“You
know what Quidditch is?” He asked seeming slightly surprised
that she would know. She smiled and shook her head.
“No
clue. But Neville was telling Lilly about it last night and she told
me that you were the captain of our house team so I figured I could
ask you about it.” Harry smiled and chuckled.
“Yeah,
sure.” He the jumped into a detailed description of everything
Quidditch. He was just wrapping up when there was a loud ding and the
scrap of benches being pushed back and people dashing out of the
Great Hall drowned out his voice.
“Time
to go.” Hermione told them over the racket and together they
walked toward the dungeons. Miley felt her stomach turn over as they
entered the dungeon classroom, there was the smell of rotting flesh
and decaying plants underlying the stale air. The walls were dark and
dingy and the fire that burned in the fireplace did little to ward
off the cold air or illuminate the area. Miley shivered and surpassed
the urge to gag as she took a sit at one of the small tables with
Lilly. Ron and Hermione sat at a table in behind them while Harry and
Oliver occupied the one in front of them. Miley stared at the back of
Harry’s head for a moment before she realized that the
professor was already in the room.
He
was a short man with a large belly and what appeared to be a dead rat
on the space between his nose and his upper lip. She bent close to
Lilly who had just noticed the professor as well and yanked on her
sleeve.
“Remind
me never to make fun of your father’s Billy Ray mustache when
we get back to California.” Miley nodded and turned her
attention back to the short little man who had waddled around to
stand in front of his desk and address the class.
“As
you are all well aware this is Potions and here is where we make the
magical little vials you see sitting on the corner of each of your
tables.” Miley looked down and was about to raise her hand to
say there were no vials when the short man waved his wand and vials
floated to each of the tables. The one that came to rest on their
table was pink and swirled in its small prison like a ribbon through
the air. She looked back up at the front of the room as the man began
to speak again. “I am Professor Horace Slughorn and am here as
a favor to Dumbledore. That’s the end of it, no questions,
forget about asking anything else. Now in this class you will learn
the art of making far more advanced potions that you are used to…”
“Yeah,
I wonder how hard that will be since we’ve never made a potion
before.” Miley whispered to Lilly and Slughorn came waddling
down the small space in between the desk to theirs. Miley and Lilly
looked down at him and he raised an eyebrow at them and pursed his
lips.
“Do
you have something to say Miss…?” He trailed off and
Miley guessed he was asking her name as well as what she had been
saying.
“Miley,
Miley Stewart. I was just saying that this might be a little
difficult seeing as neither myself nor my friends,” she
indicated Lilly and Oliver, “have ever made a potion.”
Slughorn looked at her for a moment as if he didn’t believe a
word she was saying.
“Well,
Miss Stewart, I don’t believe it will be too hard and if it is
then just ask for some assistance from another member of the class.”
With that he waddled back up toward the raised platform where his
desk sat and continued on with his lecture. Miley could tell that
though the school appeared to be a lot better than Seaview teachers
were still teachers.
Almost
an hour later Miley and Lilly were leaning over a cauldron with sweat
running down their faces and their hands stained with different
colors of powders and juices. They had done exactly as the Potions
book had said and only asked Hermione for help once when they had had
a minor disagreement on when to add the strand of blonde hair that
Lilly had supplied. Professor Slughorn came around in front of them
and scowled.
“Don’t
lean over the cauldron ladies. You’re sweat will run into the
potion and ruin it.” He told them before taking a look into
their cauldron and noticing that it was the exact color and
consistency of the one on their desk. “Very well done for your
first time ladies.” He prasied and waddled away to look at
Oliver and Harry’s who were not having the best of luck.
“Mr
Potter and Mr Oken what is this?” Slughorn pointed into the
cauldron which was supposed to be a bright yellow but was instead
bubbling a sick looking graish color. Oliver sighed and scratched his
head while Harry looked up from the potions book he had been
conferencing with.
“It’s
supposed to be a Drama Drought but I believe we stirred it a bit too
long.” Professor Slughorn looked back down at the potion then
back up at the boys.
“Just
a bit.” He said then walked away without offering any
suggestion on how to repair the damage. Oliver said something to
Harry who shook his head vigorously and turned back to his book. They
watched as their friend sighed and sank back against the wall he had
been leaning on for almost ten minutes now, since Harry had realized
their potion was wrong and tired to find a way to fix it.
Ten
minutes later they were ushered out of the Potions classroom after
Oliver had added something to their potion that should have fixed the
problem but instead made it worst. There was a loud crash and the
cauldrons bottom fell off and into the fire while the black goop
inside came running out and onto the floor. It smelled of rotted
socks and the boys shower room back at Seaview.
“I
can’t believe that we made bottom of our cauldron fall out.”
Oliver said as they went back toward the Great Hall and headed for
the common room to start on the night’s homework, which had
been doubled after the incident. Miley and Lilly patted his shoulder
and tried to comfort him.
“It’ll
be alright Oliver. Just try a little harder next time.” Miley
told him as they stepped in front of the fat lady and gave her the
password. “I swear that woman looks just like my Aunt Pearl at
her and Uncle Earls wedding.” Lilly shook her head and
retreated to one of the empty chairs by the fire and opened her
Potions book. Miley joined her and soon the common room was almost
full of people. Everyone except Harry, Ron and Hermione.
“Does
anyone know what Harry and them went?” Miley asked the group
who all shook their heads. Jackson stepped through the port hole a
moment later with a paper in his hand. He looked like he was not in a
good mood.
“Hey,
what’s up bro?” She asked as he dropped down onto the
small couch beside her. He continued to stare at the paper in his
hands. Miley lend over and noticed that it was a list of homework
assignments.
“Professor
McGonagall is going to be the death of me.” He said and shoved
the paper into his book bag before looking over at Miley then turning
to see where Lilly was. She was watching him from an armchair beside
the fire and when she noticed him looking she dunked her head and
went back to her Potions book. He stared to say something to her but
decided against it and looked back over at Miley.
“Just
a word of advice,” he said leaning back and propping his feet
up on the low table in front of them, “When Professor
McGonagall says be quite and don’t raise your hand anymore, do
it.”
“Why
pray tell?” Miley asked watching as Jackson leaned his head
back and closed his eyes. He brought one hand up and pinched the
bridge of his nose.
“Because
she thought I was trying to be a smart ass and ended up giving us
enough homework to keep us busy for the next two centuries. How am I
supposed to have a three roll of parchment essay done on the
importance on Transfigurations in Magical history when I know next to
nothing about Magical history? I’ve been reading but this is…”
He trailed off shaking his head and rubbing a hand over his face.
Miley smiled and reached over giving him a pat on the arm. He sighed
and got up.
“I’m
going to the library.” Five words Miley never thought she’d
hear come out of Jackson’s mouth but she simply laughed and
watched as he walked away. As soon as he disappeared the portrait of
the fat lady swung open again and Harry, Ron and Hermione stepped
through. Harry looked a little frustrated while Ron and Hermione
looked concerned. Harry looked like he might have run a long distance
as sweat poured down face and his breathing was hurried. Miley stood
up concerned but he walked right past her and toward the boys’
dormitory and left her staring after him.
“Is
he alright?” Miley asked watching his retreating back disappear
but was met only with silence. She turned and looked at Hermione and
Ron who were staring at her. “Well, is he?” Hermione
shook her head but didn’t elaborate. Miley frowned and stared
for the stairs. She marched up them and quickly found what she
guessed to be the boys’ dorm. She knocked and when no one said
anything pushed open the door.
“Oh
dear,” she said and backed out quickly closing the door behind
her. She stood outside the door staring at it and trying to block out
what she had just saw. As soon as the door had flung open Harry had
turned around and he’d been…shirtless. Miley had seen
her share of shirtless men before, she had lived on the California
beach, but Harry was different. His body was muscled and toned, his
skin pale and with several visible scars, probably from his many
fights for his life over the last few years. Just knowing that the
scars were from something dangerous made them that much more
intriguing and made her wonder about what it had been like for him to
stand before a person who had the power to take your life with one
flick of his wand. She took a deep breath and shook her head before
knocking on the door again, this time Harry opened it.
He
was wearing his shirt this time but didn’t look at all happy to
see her. Stepping back and letting her inside he shut the door behind
her and motioned toward the bed she’d seen him standing in
front of. She took a seat at the foot and watched as he took one on
the trunk, close but not to close.
“I
just wanted to see if you were okay?” She told him weakly and
watched as he rubbed the lightening bolt scar on his forehead.
“Yeah,
I’m fine.” He answered not looking at her.
“That’s
not what Hermione said.” She retorted quickly and he whipped
his head up looking at her with those amazing green eyes. He surveyed
her for a moment before looking away at the far wall.
“Yeah,
well, Hermione needs to keep her mouth shut.” Miley was a bit
taken back by his tone and the implication that one of his best-mates
was a big mouth. She stood up and started for the door but Harry
reached out and stopped her. He grabbed a hold of her arm and turned
her around to face him. She stared down at him frowning but
listening.
“I’m
sorry. It’s just that…” He trailed off and looked
down at the floor. He looked so weak, as if it was all he could do to
sit on the trunk and talk to her. She reached out with her free hand,
the one that was not grasped in his, and touched his cheek. He looked
up at her and smiled using what straight he could muster. The
insights into Voldemort’s mind had never drained him of his
energy before. The connection must have been getting stronger or
Voldemort’s emotions were. He looked up at Miley as she smiled
brightly down at him. He looked into her brown eyes and saw…what
exactly? He didn’t know but something swirled there with the
concern and worry for him.
“What
is it? You can tell me. I won’t say anything.” She
whispered softly as she rubbed her finger over his slighty flushed
cheek.
“Yeah,
I know. It’s just that if I tell you, you have to promise not
to tell anyone else. No one but a handful of people know about this.”
He watched as she nodded and smiled because she had said pretty much
the same thing to him last night. “You already know the story
about Voldemort killing my parents sixteen years ago right?”
She nodded. “Well, when he did some of his powers and stuff got
transferred to me when he failed to kill me as well. I can speak
Parseltongue, snake language, and I…I can see inside his head
sometimes.” He waited for her reaction but the only thing he
saw was surprise.
“So
you can talk to snakes?” He chuckled and nodded. His head felt
as if it might fall off and his body ached as he sat on the trunk
looking up at her. But the sound of his laughter was happy and it
made Miley go mushy inside.
“And
you can see inside You-Know-Who’s mind?” Once again he
nodded and she sat down on the trunk beside him.
“Wow,”
was all she could say as she looked at him. He looked over at her and
studied her for a moment.
“So,
you’re not completely freaked out by it.” She considered
for a moment but shook her head.
“No,
though the snake talking thing could be a bit strange.” He
laughed and for the first time in a long time felt joy and happiness.
Not just the artificial kind that would be gone in a few moments but
the kind that made you want to jump up and do a jig. He looked over
at her and found himself captivated by her eyes. Just ordinary, plain
Jane brown eyes that on her might have been diamonds or emeralds.
“You
get used to it after a while. It’s really kind of cool
sometimes.” She raised an eyebrow as if to say 'as
if' and that’s
when it happened. That’s when he couldn’t stop it.
As
if he was watching from outside himself and in slow motion he leaned
in and pressed his lips to hers. He didn’t have much experience
with kissing but he knew that it couldn’t have been better.
Miley’s lips were soft and she tasted like a mixture of mint
and vanilla with the underlying taste of something very female. She
seemed shocked for a moment and tensed but when he brought his hands
up and cradled her face she relaxed a tilted her head a little to the
side to kiss him more fully. She responded to him and he felt like he
was floating.
It
hadn’t been like this with Cho. It had been hesitant, a product
of her admiration for a boy who had lived while the one she’d
loved hadn’t. Her kiss had been sweet and innocent but there
had been an underlying sadness as if she was thinking of something or
rather someone else. He’d felt it and known that things would
never work out.
Slowly
he pulled back not wanting the kiss to end but knowing that it had
to. He opened his eyes and looked at her. Her eyes were still closed
and her lips were parted slightly. Her breath was shallow and her
small pink tongue darted out and took in the taste of him that clung
to her lips. He watched her, still holding her face between his hands
and a smile spread across her lips.
“Wow,”
she said and opened her eyes to stare up at him. He saw that thing
he’d seen a moment ago and this time he recognized it. It was
the shared attraction between them. Not love, no far too early for
love but this was something else, something that was more elemental.
He smiled down at her to.
“Blood
hell.” They heard Ron yelp from outside the door and quickly
pulled apart. When he opened the door he found them seating with
several inches between them and their faces red with embarrassment.
He instantly know what had been going on before he’d entered
the room.
Miley
stood quickly and made for the door turning when she reached it to
wave and say a quick goodbye before disappearing and letting the door
fall shut with a thud behind her.
“She
a good kisser mate?” Ron asked almost immediately after she was
gone and Harry looked at him for a moment as if he’d lost his
mind. Then he realized it was Ron, his best-mate, he who was asking.
“Yeah,”
both boys started to chuckle and the issue was dropped and turned to
what he’d seen in his peek into Voldemort’s mind. Though
it didn’t seem quite as important now as it had a moment ago.

Miley
ran down the stairs and grabbed Lilly by the arm pulling her away
from Oliver, Ginny (whom seemed to be listening to Oliver as if he
were the only one in the room, lord help them all) and a very
concerned looking Hermione whom upon noticing her reentrance into the
room got up and flew up the stairs toward the boys’
dormitories.
She
pulled Lilly into a deserted corner of the common room and could
barely contain herself. She was bouncing with happiness and Lilly
looked at her as if she thought she’d lost her mind. And maybe
she had but what a way to loss it.
“What’s
wrong with you?” Lilly asked after a few moments when Miley
didn’t say anything just kept staring at the stairs she had
just come back down. Miley took a deep breath to try and calm herself
but she felt the excitement bubbling up inside her and bouncing
around like pinballs in the machine.
“Harry
just kissed me.” She whispered and watched as Lilly’s
mouth fell open and her eyes widened in shock. Her mouth moved
frantically but no words escaped. Miley reached over and pushed her
chin up to close the mouth that had stopped moving and was just
hanging there.
“Are
you that surprised?” Lilly nodded and it seemed her voice had
found her.
“Yeah,
I mean you’ve known him for like…” she paused to
count on her fingers the days that Miley had known Harry. “What
four days?” Miley tilted her head thought about it but she
shook her head and pushed it away. Who cared? But before she could
say anything Lilly continued and blurted out something Miley never
thought she’d hear her say. “I’ve known Jackson for
over four years and he hasn’t kissed me once. Not once since
we’ve known each other. I can…” Lilly stopped in
mid-sentence as if she only just realized what she was saying and
clamped her hand over her mouth. Her eyes got wider and her cheeks
colored pink. She turned to run for it but Miley grabbed her arm.
“You
want to kiss my brother!?” Miley whisper-yelled as she looked
around the room hoping no one was listening in on their conversation.
She looked at the porthole where Jackson had just appeared and
noticed them standing in the corner. He stared toward them but Miley
shook her head and pointed at the empty seats where Lilly’s
forgotten Potions book was sitting and he shrugged and started toward
there instead.
“I…Um…Well,
yeah, kind of…Oh, Miley I’m so sorry. I should never
have said anything.” Immediately Lilly’s eyes filled with
tears and she covered her face with her hands. “I’m such
an awful best-friend.” Miley patiently waited until the
waterworks quited a bit before she reached over and placed her hand
on Lilly’s shoulder.
“You
are not an awful best-friend, a little weird and sick but not awful.”
Lilly gave a hiccup and sniffled. Miley couldn’t help but
smile. She was just so damned cute when she has been crying. She
reached over and hugged her before backing away and taking a deep
breath. “I can’t believe that you like my brother.”
Lilly gave her a watery smile and shrugged.
“It’s
like what you said about Harry. There’s just something about
him.” Oh, Miley understood that there was something about her
brother alright. He was weird and sick and a dork but she didn’t
say anything to Lilly. She would just let nature take its course. Of
course, that didn’t mean that she couldn’t help her
best-friend out and get her brother to at least consider going on a
date with her. She’d heard that a lot of the students went to
Hogsmade on dates all the time and that they were allowed to go at
certain times of the month.
‘I
can’t believe that my best-friend has a crush on my older
brother. Things that make you go ew. But on the bright side, now I
have someone to double date with.’ Things
at Hogwarts were better than she could have possibly hoped for.
