One Last Hope
He had not left their chambers, at least not so that she would have seen him leave. It was times like these where he was grateful for the secret entrance out the back, though he was only meant to use it when times were darker and he was summoned. Now he used it to escape her. Things could not have gone more wrong. How could she have been pregnant? It didn’t seem possible. She was just out of Hogwarts, hired on for the summer. And yet there she was, carrying his child. How long? He wondered. They’d been sleeping together for quite some time, but surely she would only have just found out, so perhaps not more than a few weeks. What was there to be done? History did indeed repeat itself.
There was only one person with whom he could seek advice and he found himself seated before that man before he even realized that he had walked to the Headmaster’s Office.
“But surely no good can come of this.”
“You’re not the same anymore, Severus.”
“She’s so young.”
“You’re not the monster you once believed yourself to be.”
“How can she love me?”
“It doesn’t matter, do you love her?”
Severus hung his head. He did love the girl, or at least as close to love as he was sure he was ever going to get. He had not loved Minerva, though his foolish self as a young boy believed he had. Minerva had been right in making the decision she had then. But he was meant to be that strong and guiding force now, but where was he? Caught up and lost in his own feelings. How could he possibly make the right decision for the girl?
“It’s a work of heart, Severus.”
“I don’t think I have the strength.”
“It takes more than muscles and sinew. It comes down to what’s in you.” He reached out and gently prodded a finger at the left side of the other’s chest. “You have to continue to grow…” the elder wizard gave him a weak smile. “Do not dwell on the past, think for the future. Have hope, my boy, hope.”
Severus nodded. It wasn’t much, but it was a start.
