Chapter 5
Almost a week had passed since their encounter on the Astronomy tower and Harry had taken to carrying Draco’s journal where ever he went. He couldn’t read it; wouldn’t invade the blonde’s thoughts like that but having his journal Harry felt as if had his own piece of Draco with him. Harry noticed how Draco’s demeanor had changed from that night on the tower; He knew that Draco was going through what he himself had gone through for the months that his journal was missing; and though he wanted to alleviate Draco’s pain he didn’t want to give up the one connection to the blonde he had. Harry sat at in potions that afternoon just watching Draco as he added the powdered monkshood to his potion; which if Harry was correct was the fourth mistake Draco had made today. Shaking his head he decided that at their potions tutoring tonight he would return the journal. As much as Harry wanted to keep the journal and use it to bate the blonde into being his; he just couldn’t stand to see him so shaken as he was. Snape chose that moment to sweep between the tables where Malfoy and Harry sat; he paused long enough to chastise Draco on the serious decline in his potions abilities and flicked his wand over Draco’s cauldron vanishing the contents. He rounded on Harry and sneered seeing that he was unable to chastise him as well. He glided past them and continued to monitor the students. Harry glanced over at Draco in time to see him wipe his eyes before slumping over and resting his head on the table. As Snape dismissed the class, Harry sought to catch Draco’s attention to verify their meeting time for studying tonight. Only after Harry dashed out of the dungeons after Draco did he manage to catch the blonds’ attention and confirm that after dinner in the great hall they would meet in the library for what Draco said would be their last meeting.
***************
As Harry sat in the back of the library waiting to Draco to join him that night he found that he could not resist the urge to delve into the emerald journal and sink into the blonde’s thoughts. Harry knew he had time before Draco would be joining him and the desire to know what the blonde really thought was too tempting for Harry to ignore the call any longer. He pulled the forbidden book from his bag and slowly opened the velvet cover. The first page bore a strange inscription, it appeared to be some kind of poem.
I fake it because I don’t belong
The will to change this circumstance eludes me still
if I can rise above this I'll be saved
And if I die for love, then I'm enslaved
Can anybody save me?
I lost my self-esteem along the way
Harry read the cryptic words several times before deciding that they didn’t mean anything. He began flipping through the pages of the journal looking for any mention of him in the journal. Harry found that Draco’s journal was just as cryptic and devoid of any real definitive information like his was. As Harry came across a particularly interesting looking entry he heard a strangled sound and jerked his gaze from the pages. There stood Draco Malfoy; somehow paler then usual and with a look like he had just swallowed a bug. Harry turned red and ashamed that he could not control his emotions and that he could not show the blonde the same respect that had been shown him. Harry had invaded the boys thoughts, the fact that he had learned nothing didn’t matter. Harry stood and handed the journal over.
“Draco…” Harry started only to be silenced by a hand.
“No words Potter. Get out of my sight.” Draco’s words were cold and unemotional, as Draco choked on tears and emotion.
Harry quickly left the library and Draco to his thoughts. He felt terrible, he couldn’t sleep that night. He just had to find a way to make things right with the boy. Harry decided he would ask Hermione for her help in the morning.
***************
Draco sat in the center of his four poster bed; his journal lay open to the page that Harry had been looking at when Draco caught him. The words were now smudged and illegible thanks to the tears Draco allowed to freely fall from his eyes. Harry had been reading the page where he had expressed his feelings for the Gryffindor. Draco feared the morning and what awaited him now that Harry knew the truth. Emotional exhaustion forced Draco into a fitful sleep that was bound to leave him less than rested.
***************
As the first drops of sun light filtered into the boys dormitories of the Gryffindor tower, Harry yawned, stretched and stumbled from his four poster bed. He knew it was early morning on a Saturday but he needed Hermione’s help and he knew she would be up. Harry tapped lightly on her door.
“Herm? You up yet?” he called softly through the door, “I need your help….”
“Meet me in the common room in five minutes; I’ll be right up.” Hermione’s groggy voice called out in response.
Harry nodded, even though she couldn’t see him and made his way to sit down in one of the squishy arm chairs in front of the fire to wait.
Several hours later Harry sat at the Gryffindor table in the Great Hall, picking at his breakfast waiting for Draco to enter. He had to hope Hermione’s plan would work, he was taking a serious risk sending Draco the letter using Hedwig, and possibly outing himself if his assumptions about the blonde were incorrect; but Hermione said it was vital to make it obvious that it was Harry who was sending the notes. Movement at the Slytherin table caught Harry’s attention and he could see that Draco apparently hadn’t slept well either and the sight of him in his current state broke Harry’s heart.
***************
Draco had not slept well at all and was still so hurt and emotionally raw that he hadn’t even bothered to make himself look civil. His platinum blonde hair left rumpled and sticking out at odd angles, dark circles under his pale eyes emphasized the lack of sleep and his current emotional distress. Draco was so past caring about his appearance that he had merely rolled out of bed and padded barefoot and clad only in his green silk pajama pants to the Slytherin table to attempt to eat. As Draco sat down Hedwig drifted down from the rafters where she had been waiting, she glided down low over his plate and dropped the letter before soaring up and across the Great Hall to perch on Harry’s knee. Harry watched Draco’s reaction to the letter with bated breath, hoping this display worked. Draco hadn’t even noticed Hedwig swoop down but did notice the letter on his plate; picking up the emerald green paper he looked up and down the Slytherin table to see who left it, but found he was the sold house member at the table. Slowly Draco opened the folded parchment and had to fight back the new wave of emotions and pain that surged through him at the sight of the writing. He knew right away that it was from Harry and more than that he had sent him an actual page from his journal along with the note. Draco read through it quickly and then again more meticulously, reading into each line of the song.
“It’s really hard to tell you I’m sorry
I don’t wanna break your heart again
It’s really hard to tell you I’m sorry
I don’t wanna see you cry again
It’s really hard to tell you I’m sorry
Is there anything that I can do?
I’m sorry for the lies
That I kept telling you
I’m sorry for the things I never said to you
But I can’t hide the truth
I never can
It’s really hard to say I’m sorry
You’re just a part of me
And I can let you go
Please forgive me
Draco , Meet me tonight at midnight atop the astronomy tower. Come alone.
-HP “
Draco sat and stared in disbelief at the words on the parchment. Harry saw the fear and then shock read across Draco’s face he decided that he was okay to start with the next step of Hermione’s plan in seeking his forgiveness and obtaining the blonde for himself. Harry quietly slipped from the Great Hall, Hedwig gliding after him. After gaining his own thoughts again Draco folded the journal page and letter and slipped them both into his pocket; he stood and looked slowly around the Great Hall only to see Hedwig soar out the door after who Draco assumed was Harry. Breakfast forgotten Draco left the Great Hall made his way to the Slytherin common room; he needed time to think about what he was going to do and how exactly he felt about the Gryffindor.
