The following Friday, while Harry was servicing his broom and Severus was knitting, the floo stirred up. When Harry saw the face in the embers he smiled a broad grin and gave access.
“What in the world are you doing here?” he asked still smiling.
“Hi Harry,” smiled back Dennis Creevey.
“Dennis, what are you doing here?”
“If you like, I can leave,” said the younger Gryffindor with a knowing smile.
“Not on your life. You have no idea how glad I am to see you. But shouldn’t you be at Hogwarts?”
“Yeah, well its Pop’s birthday and you know… with Colin gone, I didn’t want to leave him alone. Headmistress McGonagall said it was alright. My dad and I went out to dinner and then he turned in early. I can’t go to sleep so early. You know how it is at the tower.”
“How’s your dad doing?” asked Harry afraid to hear the answer.
“He’s alright, I guess. He doesn’t speak much these days.”
Harry was able to read between the lines and figured that Dennis had the need for company that took him away from his dad’s depression. Colin and Dennis’ dad was a humble man, a muggle milkman. He had been very excited to learn that not one but both of his sons had been accepted into Hogwarts but then this wonderful world had stripped him from his firstborn. The magical world lost its luster.
Harry had to help McGonagall convince Mr. Creevey to allow Dennis back to come back to school. Mr. Creevey told Harry how much Colin had admired him. This was not news to Harry but the fact that Mr. Creevey agreed to let Dennis go back to school because he had asked was quite overwhelming. He would do anything to keep Mr. Creevey’s second son safe. Harry was musing about all of this when he saw Dennis approach Snape.
“Hi, Professor, so glad to see you again,” he said with a broad smile.
“I am happy to see you, Mr. Creevey,” said Snape, not really raising his eyes.
“Come off it, Professor, we aren’t at school… you don’t have to call me Mr. Creevey here.”
“Dennis, I have instructed Snape to address his superiors in the most formal and respectful way,” interjected the Golden Boy.
“Harry, you are treating him kindly, right? You know how much he did for us…”
The loud pop announced Kreacher’s presence in the room. The little elf looked at the newly arrived guest and announced, “hot chocolate and sweet pastries on the table,” and was readying his fingers to disappear when Dennis took hold of his arm and smiled.
“Hi, Kreacher, you know you don’t have to have hot coco every time I come,” he said with a wink.
“Kreacher is always getting refreshments for the guest of this house,” said the creature, not wanting to admit that he was giving the Creevey kid any special treatment.
“Do you serve them all hot coco and sweet pastries?” he questioned with a sideways smile.
Kreacher decided that it was in his best interests not to answer and popped away.
Harry and Dennis reached the table and Dennis looked back to see that Snape had not moved from the sitting room.
“Professor, you are going to join us, right?”
Harry gave the Professor a slight nod and he moved towards the two younger wizards. They sat and ‘a la Hogwarts’ the food appeared on the table. It was just like getting desert without having to wait through the main dish. Harry and Dennis smiled and the challenge was on: who could eat more. Harry knew that Dennis did not stand a chance. Harry had gone too many nights without food and had learned early on to seize food when it was available. Dennis grabbed a big round powdered sugar pastry and placed more than two thirds of it in his mouth leaving behind a white goatee on his face. Harry laughed out loud and Severus was amazed by the sound. He realized he had never heard the Gryffindor laugh before. It was something that suited the young man. It made him human.
Potter arched his eyebrow at Dennis and grabbed two of the white powdered pastries and gobbled them both without any trouble, but alas, a white mustache was left behind and Dennis laughed. Severus had a hard time not following suit.
“Come off it, Professor, you’re allowed to laugh.”
But Severus bowed his head even lower and hid his eyes.
“Dennis, keep Snape out of this,” ordered Harry.
“Harry,” sang Dennis, “The Professor is one of us now.”
“He will never be one of us!” said Harry trying his best to keep his voice down.
“But, Harry, after all he did for us. Especially all he did for Colin and me. Those are things I will never forget,” announced the young Gryffindor as he searched in vain for Snape’s eyes through his oily locks.
Harry looked at him in disbelief; what in heaven’s name was Dennis talking about? Every student that ever crossed the main entrance at Hogwarts knew what a foul professor Snape was.
“What exactly did the greasy git do?”
Dennis looked at Harry and decided that a confession was in order. “Harry, I am gay.”
Harry looked at him not knowing how to react. Did Dennis think he was going to cast him out for this? Why did he seem worried?
“And… what does that have to do with Snape?”
Then a thought raced into his head, “Dennis! He didn’t take advantage of you?! Please! Tell me he…”
“HARRY! How could you even think a thing like that about the Professor?”
Harry relaxed back on to his seat.
“Look… Colin came into my dorm one day while I was bathing and found my journal. He read the poems and unsent letters I was writing to the bloke I had a crush on. When I came out of the bathroom I saw him with my journal in his hand and an expression of pure horror.”
Harry could only imagine what Colin was going through.
“I told him how I felt. How I could not stop thinking of the object of my affections. Harry, do you know what he did?”
Harry was afraid of the answer to that question.
“He sat down and listened to me. Harry, it was great. I knew my brother was totally shocked by this news but Colin was always my big brother, always there for me. Once he heard me out he decided to find out all he could about homosexuality and tried to sneak into the library at night. That was when the Professor caught him.”
“I dread to think what he did to the poor kid,” interjected the Guide.
“That’s just it, Harry, he was amazing and helped Colin and I deal with the unknown,” he announced with a broad smile.
One look at Harry’s face told him that he had lost the Chosen One.
“Yes, Harry, Professor Snape was the reason Colin and I were able to deal with all of my issues. You don’t know what it is to wake up one morning and realize you are different and that there is nothing you can do to change it.”
Harry thought of challenging this assessment but then his curiosity got the best of him.
“How exactly did the git help you?”
“Harry,” sang the young man, “don’t refer to him like that. He is really a kind man.”
“A KIND MAN! Oh Dennis, only you could see goodness where there is none.”
“Harry, do you know what the Professor did when he caught Colin and Colin told him what he was doing?”
“At least a week’s detention.”
“You would think, given the Professor’s reputation but no Harry, he didn’t. Mind you, Colin was terrified, he told me he nearly pissed in his pants while the Professor towered over him as he picked up the books that he had dropped. The Professor took one book out of the pile, read the title and said “Nice collection you’ve got there, Mr. Creevey.”
“They’re for my brother,” answered Colin and then he gave him the best piece of advice every. “Then I’d advise your brother to speak to the Headmaster. He can give him something that none of those books can.”
“And that is wonderful advice... why?”
“Harry!”
“Sorry but you know you tend to give way to much credit for things that don’t merit them like getting you a meeting with Dumbledore. Dennis all you had to do was ask McGonagall to tell the headmaster that you wanted to speak to him and she would have arranged it.”
“That would have been a bit difficult given the fact that I didn’t know I wanted to see Dumbledore.”
Harry looked lost again and Dennis took a deep breath and explained.
“You see, Professor Snape arranged for me to spend a Saturday morning with Dumbledore. His office was filled with amazing gadgets. He showed me how to use some of them. Here I was in front of the most amazing wizard of our times and he was just like me.”
“Just like you?”
“Yes, Harry, you know… gay,” he announced.
“Who in the world told you that lie?” he said looking towards Snape.
“Dumbledore,” he answered bringing Harry’s attention back to him.
“You must have misunderstood.”
“No, Harry, I didn’t. Dumbledore told me his whole story. How he realized for the first time that he was attracted to wizards and not witches. He told me he suspected that his mother knew, but always ignored the fact. He also explained how his brother was so supportive of his sexual orientation and how he wished for his brother to be that supportive in other aspects of his life. I don’t think they met eye to eye in many things.”
Harry snorted knowing that was an understatement.
“He told me how it felt the first time he fell in love and how to that day he still believed it to be the love of his life even when it ended so tragically.”
“Tragically?”
“He never did explain. He simply said that one day I would read his story and understand why his first love ended so poorly.”
Harry seemed to have pieced the pieces together because understanding dawned on him but he was not about to explain it to the younger wizard.
“So apparently the greasy git did one good thing for one student in his twenty years of teaching at Hogwarts,” admitted the Gryffindor.
Dennis looked at him with a puzzled look then seemed to have an ‘ah ha’ moment and smiled.
“Good one, Harry, you had me going there for a minute. You know perfectly well all he did for us when the Carrows were in control of Hogwarts.” Then looking into Harry’s absent eyes he realized that Harry had no way of knowing. “You mean no one ever told you all he did to keep us safe from the Carrows?”
“I always heard that they were on the same team,” he answered quite dryly.
“Harry, do you know what shape the Professor’s Patronus takes?”
Harry knew very well the shape of Snape’s Patronus but it brought a foul taste to his mouth to remember. To do so would be to admit that the Professor had in occasions helped him; that not all of Severus Snape’s actions were horrific.
“… A doe,” he said with a dry mouth.
“I knew it!” he yelled raising his hands in triumph. “Neville said it had to be him and Neville is never wrong about these things.”
Harry looked lost, not understanding a word of what Dennis was saying, but Severus obviously knew because he had turned scarlet. Dennis decided to turn the subject just a tad.
“Harry, the Carrows would use any excuse to send us up to bed without supper. They liked to drink with their supper and the teachers would get on their case if they saw them drink in front of the students, so their solution would be to send us up to bed without dinner. But every time we were sent to bed without supper the elves would bring it to our dorms.”
“Dennis, don’t be daft, the elves give food out freely.”
“Yes, Harry they do, but they are not allow to bring it to our rooms without express orders from the headmaster,” smiled Dennis. “It is even written in Hogwarts: A History that the elves can give students food if visited at the school’s kitchen but they may not take food to them without the Headmaster’s consent. You see, Harry, the professor was the Headmaster at the time. He was the only one that could give the order,” he said smugly.
“So he fed you guys, whoopee. I hardly think he deserves a decoration for that,” said the sarcastic Gryffindor.
“My stomach would beg to differ but obviously you have never gone without,” said the naïve Creevey.
Harry lowered his head and Severus hid his face not wanting to show what he knew.
“Sorry, that was uncalled for. Feeding you all was perhaps one of his few noble deeds,” compromised the Gryffindor.
“Not true, Harry, back to the doe, I assure you it was not once or twice that that doe came galloping down a corridor to warn us of impending danger. Neville says he owes his life to that doe,” he said looking at Severus’ bowed head.
Harry refused to look towards Snape and the Potions Master in turn was finding the air lacking in the room.
“Mr. Potter may I please be excused? It is past my usual bedtime,” he said not raising his eyes to meet Harry’s.
Harry was grateful for the opportunity to get rid of him. “You are dismissed,” was his curt answer.
Once Severus left, Dennis leaned over to whisper, “I think I made him uncomfortable. He does not like it when people talk about the good he has done.”
“He has little to worry about then,” interjected Harry.
Dennis blew a puff of air that stirred his bangs. But he was not about to give up on Harry. Harry was his and his late brother’s hero and he knew that deep down inside Harry was good and incapable of any wrongdoing. Harry was simply confused.
“Listen, I am going to tell you something that Colin told me sometime after the incident with the Professor.”
Harry thought this was it. We were getting down to the ugly part of Snape for sure.
“Soon after that night, Colin got a package in the morning mail. When he opened it he found that it was a book on photography. Colin said he didn’t know why but as soon as he opened it he looked to the teacher’s table and he saw how Professor Snape immediately averted his gaze.”
“Dennis anyone who knew Colin and his love for photography could have sent him that book.”
“Yeah, I know, In fact I told Colin the same thing but he said he liked the idea that it had been the professor. He was convinced that the professor was really a nice bloke.”
“Colin was young and naive. I am hopping you will be smarter than that.”
Dennis looked at his idol and knew that it was going to take a bit more effort to bring Harry to the ‘good side’ once again.

Severus didn’t waste any time and left toward the kitchen immediately. Kreacher was waiting with his blankets near the hearth. He handed Severus the nightgown, his glasses and one of his books. The man took the bundle and thanked the thoughtful elf. He fell asleep in his warm nightgown and reading one of the novels that Poppy had given him.
A couple of hours later he was awoken by Kreacher who simply perked up his ears to let Severus know that he was being called by Potter. Snape tuned his ear to hear what Kreacher was hearing and jumped to his feet when he heard Sir calling him. He ran up the stairs and found Harry Potter still yelling for him in the middle of the hallway. Harry stopped when he saw him climb the last step short of breath due to having run to the call. The Gryffindor’s eyes grew when he was able to see Snape standing there with the purple and lavender nightgown and the pointy glasses askew on his face.
“What the hell are you wearing?” yelled the Boy Who Lived.
Severus realized what a spectacle he was making. His demeanor changed abruptly and he wanted to crawl under a rock and wait for a merciful death. When he realized he was guilty of self-pity he uncurled and asked, “Is there anything you needed?” and then as an afterthought added, “Sir.”
“Snape! I asked you a question. What in Merlin’s name are you wearing?”
Severus took a deep breath and squared his shoulders, “Kreacher is kind enough to wash and press my only robe so he got me this to wear at night while he washes my robe,” he explained.
“An old woman’s gown,” he taunted, “how fitting, but in all honesty you look hideous, even for you,” suppressing his laughter.
Severus lifted his chin and waited for the taunting to end.
“And those glasses?”
“Kreacher yet again came to my aide. He found these from his old mistress…”
“… and they fit?”
“No, Sir, not exactly, but I find if I placed them at the right distance they do just fine.”
Harry considered this; he knew what it was to need spectacles, and as food, he was not about to deny his charge the small luxury.
“Don’t use those. You could be harming your eyes. When we go see Poppy I will have her make out a pair for your specific prescription.”
Severus didn’t know how to react to this, but Harry gave him a cue when he stuck out his hand for Severus to kiss. Snape took the offered hand and kissed it.
“Thank you, Sir, you are most kind.”
Harry took back his hand and pointing to his bedroom he told Severus to go in. The Potions Master took a deep breath and closed his eyes. He was going to have to pay for those glasses.
“Take off that hideous thing and sit by the fire so you can warm up. I don’t want you in my bed with cold feet,” chastised the Gryffindor.
Severus walked over to the fireplace and lifted the gown over his head. Then he folded the gown and placed the glasses on top then looked around the room for a place to put it.
“Throw it on the floor. Why are you being so careful with the rag?”
But Severus could not do it.
“Kreacher was kind enough to get these for me and he does all of the laundry; I will not contribute to his workload,” dared the Marked One.
Harry took out his wand and pointed it to the pile in Severus’ hand and without a word made it disappear. Snape felt his heart shrink. He had no idea what had happened to his warm nightgown and the only means of reading that he had. He felt defeated. He knelt and then sat on the floor next to the fire and waited until he was called.
He walked to the bed dreading his destiny, but once he lay in bed Harry spelled out the light and went to sleep. Severus waited, not daring to move or breathe too hard in fear of the dreaded action, but it didn’t come and soon he also fell into a fitful sleep. Sometime during the night he felt Harry cuddle up to his back. He braced himself but the young man simply sniffed his back and placed the side of his head on Snape’s back. Harry began to snore and Severus thought it was a blessed sound. He found that the snoring help him sleep, knowing that as long as he heard the sound he had nothing to fear.
