Hermione narrowed her eyes glaring at the back of a platinum blond head as she made her way through the staff room to post the staff meeting agenda next to the headmistress’ podium. He was seated next to Professor Flitwick at one of the long staff tables. As she neared them to cross to the front of the staff room she heard the rumble of his deep, smooth voice. Apparently, Lucius had been a favorite of the tiny professor having been one of Flitwick’s most talented students at of all things, charms, not surprising really, the man could charm the scales off a snake. She grit her teeth when she heard Lucius give a low chuckle and the tiny professor tittered happily.
“What a pompous arse, pulling the wool over everyone’s eyes,” she thought, even as she fought the quiver of excitement at the sound and timber of his voice.
She forced herself to ignore him as she walked by his table. It wouldn’t do to make a scene in the middle of the staff room, probably a wise move on her part when Aurora Sinistra made a beeline for Lucius. The dark, sultry older woman definitely had her eye on the newest member of staff. Hermione could practically hear her salivate as she brushed by Hermione to get to Lucius Malfoy.
Hermione rolled her eyes and gripped her wand so tightly her knuckles went white. She had an unbearable urge to reach out and throttle the older woman. She shook her head slightly, why should she care, she should be glad someone was vying for the dark wizard’s affections, it meant she might see less of him and that thought left her somewhat bereft. Ever annoyed with her rollercoastering emotions she walked more quickly to the blackboard to tack up the agenda.
She sat down next to the Headmistress’ podium with a heavy sigh and began to riffle through the parchments on her clipboard, determined to make herself look busy if anyone was by chance taking an interest in observing her. She looked up just in time to see Professor Sinistra pull up a chair next Lucius and let out a throaty chuckle. Lucius stood up to make room for the lovely professor and grinned at her as she sat down and he settled himself back down at the table.
Hermione sat and stewed, “what a pillock, he is such a wanker.” If she had a leather belt on hand she’d readily use it on him. “Get a grip, Hermione, get a grip,” she told herself softly.
“What was that, Miss Granger?” the headmistress inquired as she situated her notes onto the podium.
“Oh nothing, Headmistress, just running down a list of tasks to do after the staff meeting finishes today.” Hermione kept her head down, biting her lower lip as she continued to shuffle through her parchments.
“Am I working you too hard, my dear?” Minerva inquired noting Hermione’s pale complexion.
“No, not at all Headmistress.” Hermione rushed to reassure her.
“Very well,” Professor McGonagall harrumphed. She thought it might be good idea to ensure her young assistant wasn’t pushing herself too hard, perhaps it might be best if Hermione were to take a few days off. Smiling fondly, Minerva reminded herself that the young woman did have tendency to be a bit of a perfectionist, she didn’t want to burn out the best assistant she’d ever had. With that thought tucked away to the back of her mind the headmistress kicked off the staff meeting. General topics filled the agenda, the last being the faculty assignments for the upcoming Yule ball. The school term was well underway and running smoothly. All of her staff seemed to be settling in quite nicely. After the staff meeting ended, Minerva gave Hermione an affectionate pat on the shoulder before she walked out of the staff room, the majority of the staff following in her wake to discuss last minute questions and issues.
Hermione finished taking down the last set of minutes using her enchanted quotes quill which scrolled furiously across her parchment, she began to gather up her notes and paperwork signaling the end of meeting.
"A word." A smooth, low voice murmured near her ear.
Hermione's breath sucked in and lodged in her throat, nearly choking her. She hadn't seen, let alone heard Lucius' approach. His deep voice vibrated through her every nerve ending. His breath blew across her ear as he leaned down to talk with her. Her hands fisted on her clipboard as she resisted the urge to bury them into his long silky hair as it brushed against her cheek.
"I'm busy," she said as she nodded to the remaining teachers leaving the staff room. She stood up then moved away from him to give several parchments to some of the teachers before they left the room.
As soon as they were alone in the staff room, Lucius gently gripped her arm. “I believe we should talk.”
"No."
"Hermione, I must insist, you’ve been avoiding me since our little tryst in the library. I could swear that every time you see me coming in your direction you run the opposite direction. That ends tonight.”
She stepped back, jerking her arm from his grasp putting some much needed space between them. “As you will recall, Professor, I ended any trysting we might have in the library several nights ago.”
With slow deliberation, he quirked his brow up and looked down his nose at her, a small smirk played upon his face and he slowly shook his head, “I think not. I told you it wasn't over. Not by a long shot."
Damn him, how could just the quirk of his eyebrow cause desire to begin to trickle down her leg. Desperate to arm herself against him she held the clipboard up and pressed it tightly against her chest.
His lips tipped into a sexy crooked grin. One that made her want to slap his arrogant, pompous face and kiss him senseless. "I believe a meeting in my rooms tonight would suffice.”
With a growl of pure frustration, Hermione dropped her clipboard and spun away from him walking with stiff little steps towards the door of the staff room. “Our discussion is over, go bother Professor Sinistra. Quit bothering me.”
"Professor Sinistra?" The confusion in his tone made her stop and face him. His brow knitted into a frown. "What in all the heavens name are you talking about?"
"Professor Sinistra, the tall, dark, sultry woman that sat next to you during the staff meeting. She practically drools every time you walk into a room.”
Confusion marred his brow then understanding quickly took its place and he smirked knowingly at her, “You are jealous, pet. How delightful.”
Infuriated Hermione practically growled, “You pompous arse.” She couldn’t leave the damn staff room quickly enough.
“Hermione,” the demand in his low, smooth voice stopped her. She turned to look at the tall fair-haired wizard, who seemed to drip with masculine sensuality, damn him for looking like sex on a stick.
“My rooms, nine o’clock this evening.”
Her eyes widened then narrowed. “No.”
He moved towards her and she backed up quickly until she felt the wall at her back. Gods, the man moved fast. His jaw tightened. His eyes narrowed. He trapped her in between his arms as he leaned his palms against the wall looking down at her. “Listen to me, little girl, you are the only one that claims my attention. Do you hear me, you stubborn little witch?”
Hermione’s mouth fell open in surprise and she gave a tiny little nod.
"Good." He dropped his arms and lifted her chin with an index finger. "My rooms, nine o’clock tonight.”
Her heart seemed to be beat double time. She desperately needed to gain some control here, he had the ability to fluster her at every turn. She leveled a hard look at him, no more orders. Damn him. She opened her mouth to tell him no when the staff door pushed open, Lucius took several steps back as Argus Filch sidled into the staff room, intent on getting to the left over pastries.
“There is chocolate pastry left over, Mr. Filch, I believe it’s your favorite.” Hermione said as she stepped away from the door towards the old caretaker.
Filch’s eyes softened as he looked at Hermione, she was a little peach, always ensuring his favorite pastry remained after staff meetings. The old man stiffly shuffled his way towards the pastries.
Hermione turned her head to level a hard glare at Lucius and mouthed a silent, “No.”
Lucius eyes went icy in irritation and he whispered loud enough that only Hermione could hear, “this is far from over, pet. I expect to see you this evening.”
Feeling decidedly more brave with some distance set between them Hermione hissed, “leave before you make a scene.”
"You haven't seen anything yet, little girl."
