Chapter
Five
“Shite! It's that late?” Sirius pulled Severus to him
and gave him a firm kiss, devouring his tongue hungrily as he flicked
his wand to summon his clothes. “Sorry, Sev. I have an exam.
I've really gotta run.”
Severus didn't miss the way he frowned at the mark Remus had left on
his throat (a new one) and frowned a bit before tugging on his
trousers and buttoning his linen shirt incorrectly in his haste.
This was a disturbing new development – Lupin's recent
fascination with giving him hickeys seemed as though it might be
connected to Black's tendency to frown at them.
Severus pulled on his pants and sat down on the duvet for a moment as
he considered his situation with the two Gryffindor boys. He tried
not to think about it much, to be honest. No matter how he looked at
it when he did he was the person who came off the worst and had to
rationalize his behavior to feel like less of an opportunistic
bastard.
When Lupin had first come onto him, it was just so novel, so nice,
to imagine he had some quality that another person might find
desirable that he couldn't bring himself to turn the boy down. And
really, there didn't seem to be any harm in shagging once in a while.
Shagging was all it was, and it felt good, and okay, so that made him
a little hedonistic, but most teenage boys were. It didn't matter
that he loved someone, or that Lupin – well, who knew what
Lupin was thinking? But even if that was all fine, even if there was
nothing wrong with weekly shags turning into daily shags, that didn't
explain the Shrieking Shack with Sirius. It didn't explain why he
didn't leave that first night, or why he was waking up here for the
third consecutive Monday morning. It didn't explain how Sirius
consistently dragged orgasm after orgasm out of him even now, when it
was no longer new or unusual, or why ripples ran up his spine when
the dark haired boy whispered in his ear, or moaned his name, and it
certainly didn't explain how 'occasionally' shagging other boys had
turned into letting one jerk you off in the middle of class whenever
it suited his fancy. Most of all, it didn't explain how he hadn't
seen much at all of Lily in weeks, and didn't miss her as much as he
ought to. He loved her, after all. Madly. She was the perfect
person. More than that, she was an angel. He'd do absolutely
anything for her. It was just that he'd never given much thought to
having sex with her. That had never seemed like a problem, until
now. Now dreams about Lily's smile and the sweet way she had of
tilting her head, and her pretty green eyes, were being replaced by
gray eyes an inch from his own, masculine hands caressing his body,
being filled to the brim as his fingers coiled in long, dark hair and
Sirius Black screamed his name in ecstasy. He almost never dreamed
of Remus. On the rare occasions when he did, it was a threesome.
It wasn't as if he was falling in love with Sirius, but he was
starting to like him, and that was dangerous. Liking his cock and
liking him as a person were two very, very different things, and the
latter was going too far. 'Way too far.'
That was the problem. It was obvious, now that he thought about it.
The way Sirius would frown at his hickeys, and how they'd slipped
into a first name basis without noticing. The way they would shag
and cuddle and shag and cuddle and fall asleep together, and
sometimes, rather than shagging, they would just snog the hell out of
each other, as if shagging, while always incredible, was no longer
strictly necessary between them. Whatever they were to one another,
it was a relationship that no longer existed for the sole and
explicit purpose of sex.
That's why Severus knew it had to end. He would have to be very
clear, very succinct, or Sirius would only seduce him again. He had
to do something that would make Sirius not want to. 'But what?'
he wondered. 'Something...unforgivable. Something he'll hate so
much that he won't even be able to stand the sight of me. Oh. I can
do that...'
...and he felt guilty about it already, but it couldn't be helped.
*
Remus tilted his head quizzically to the side. “You're not
naked,” he observed. They had a routine by now. Severus would
already be naked, or halfway there, by the time Remus arrived. There
was no point wasting potential shagging time on things like getting
undressed. They were always as quick about that as possible.
“No, I'm not,” Severus said tightly. “...I...require
your assistance with a certain matter of some delicacy.”
Remus quirked his brow. “Is that so?”
“...I would be willing to pay whatever price you require.”
But if it was money, they would have to work out an installment
plan.
Remus smirked. “Just tell me, Severus. After all the time we
spend naked together, you can at least consider me a friend, I
think.”
Severus tossed him an annoyed glare. “I would like you to
assist me with a ruse,” he hedged. “In order to rid
myself of Sirius Black's attentions.”
“I was under the impression you liked his attentions.”
“I do...I did,” Severus corrected. “As you've
said. He is not like you. The situation has...changed.”
“Ah.” Remus didn't really need to hear more. He knew it
would come to this if Severus allowed it to continue. “Well,
then, what did you have in mind?”
The stern expression on Snape's face, the way his emotions tightened
into an unreadable knot in his bottomless black eyes and the firm set
of his jaw, told Remus that he wasn't going to like what the other
boy had to say.
*
This was for the best, Remus reminded himself. Not just for Severus,
but for Sirius as well. It was best for everyone, really. He had
to, because if it wasn't for the best, he would never, ever, in a
million years, consider hurting his dear friend the way he was about
to.
“What's up, Moony?” Sirius asked. “You're awfully
quiet for a guy who said he had something important to talk to me
about.”
“Sorry,” Remus answered. “Listen, there's no good
way to say this, so I'm just going to say it.”
Sirius made a gesture with his hand to imply Remus should get on with
it.
“You have to stop shagging Severus.”
Sirius sighed. “Not this again. We've talked about this, Rem.
I know what I'm doing.”
“No, I mean, you have to stop shagging Severus, because he and
I are dating now. I couldn't stop you before, but...things have
changed.”
“Things have...changed...” Sirius echoed tightly.
Something dropped out of the pit of his stomach. How had they changed
so much? He and Snape had been getting on so well. Sometimes, when
they were cuddling, they'd even talk., like, have actual, real
conversations about life, or school, or even nothing particular at
all. Yesterday, Sirius had cracked a joke that had actually
made Severus laugh. It was just a little rumble in the back of his
throat, but Sirius had heard it! And it was awesome. And today
he was dating Remus? No way! It wasn't possible. “How
did that happen?” he asked, not liking the tight knot of
jealousy that he could hear in his own voice. He knew Remus wouldn't
miss it.
“Well, it's not that strange, is it? We've been spending time
together every day for a while now. He said...” Remus stopped
himself. “In any case, he's come to realize that he cares for
a fair bit more of me than just the intimate bits, and since the
feeling is mutual we've agreed to expand our relationship into more
mundane affairs. We don't necessarily want to be particularly public
about it, but I offered to talk to you. I...well, Severus is many
things, but he lacks something in tact. I thought it would be better
coming from me.”
“What did he say, exactly?” Sirius all but
growled.
“Sirius, please...”
“Tell me what that little shit bloody said, Remus! What the
fuck did he say about me that's so bloody well cruel that you didn't
want me to hear it?”
“He implied that you were somewhat...” Remus had agreed
that this was for the best, but that didn't mean it was easy to be
unkind to one of his dearest friends.
“Spit it out, Remus!”
“He said he was thinking about me,” Remus answered
abruptly. If it was a coarse reply like that, Sirius would believe
it. “He said when he was shagging you, he was thinking about
me, that if he didn't he couldn't perform properly. He called you a
hormonally-driven git who couldn't keep it in his pants and didn't
know the difference between a cry of pleasure and one of pain.”
“You're lying,” Sirius declared. That couldn't be true.
Severus got off just as much as he did. He wouldn't be able to if it
hurt, right? Sure, sometimes it was a little quick but he'd have
noticed if he wasn't having fun, wouldn't he? 'Would I? It always
felt so good, so perfect, was I too lost in my own pleasure to
notice? That can't be, right?' But Remus wouldn't lie to him.
Severus would, in an instant, but Remus? Remus was his dearest
friend. He was the gentlest, sweetest person Sirius knew. Well,
except at that time of month.
“I'm sorry, Sirius. I really am,” Remus said.
“You think being sorry makes a difference now,
Remus?” Sirius spat. “If you fancied him, you should
have told me from the beginning before I...Shite.” He wanted to
scream. He was so angry. He couldn't even figure out who he
was the most angry at. “Does he know?”
“What?”
“About you, you twat. Does he know about you?”
Remus tensed. “...no.”
“And you honestly think he's still going to want you when he
finds out?” Sirius snipped.
“Sirius, don't do this...” Remus begged. “Please.
This is why I told you to stop. This is why I asked you to leave well
enough alone. I knew you would get attached to him.”
“Just like you did, then?” Sirius spat. “Bugger
off, Remus.”
Remus sighed a little and left, hoping his friendship with Sirius
would somehow survive Snape's plan.
