Draco was stunned. He felt the mark burn and scowled. Damn! He’d always sworn that no witch would brand him, but that was before… “Hermione” he uttered her name softly. She had done it so easy. Then another thing hit him whatever this was between them it was mutual. On the Weasley rooftop she had been so tired that Draco had almost felt guilty about it, almost. He shuddered…he wanted her so bad it hurt. He grimaced. He hadn’t realised she’d even marked him until the pain hit. He chuckled and conceded that he must have really pissed her off throughout their time at Hogwarts. The nose and shins he’d known about but not some of the other stuff. Seemed young Granger had been hexing him on and off for years. She had the upperhand, but not for long. He’d soon change that. She may have marked him but he knew what it meant. “See you in your dreams” his softly to no one in particular. He looked at his reflection in the dresser and couldn’t believe the image in front of him. He was a mess and before he had time to clean himself up the bedroom door opened and one set of steely grey eyes met another. Lucius smiled to himself, the boy looked a mess and positively rattled. Inwardly Draco groaned . What was he doing here, he never came to his room. Lucius noted the bed and frowned slightly. “Father “ Draco said after a moment. He had managed to gain a little composure. “Have you looked…” He noted the parchment and Draco felt his stomach tighten he hadn’t even looked at them. “No..” Draco replied and cringed expecting the explosion from his father, but it never came. Instead Lucius surprised his son by motioning him to sit next to him. Draco reluctantly took his place. “Draco, I know you hate the idea of having to put up with that filthy mudblood but…” and with that Lucius outlined his plan. When he was finished Draco was stunned “learn all you can, try to keep a civil tongue, as we both know Draco the mudblood is the best to learn from, you will be tutored before the start of mini term so that you are not behind.” Draco frowned and his father seemed to snap. Standing up Lucius looked at his son anger written all over his face and his toned was to say the least menacing. “Read them and get your self ready for dinner” Lucius smirked “ Perhaps then you’ll have some focus and…” he looked pointedly at the bed “restraint” As soon as the door closed behind his father Draco found himself laughing then stopped himself. He was losing his mind but his father, contrary to what he believed, wasn’t punishing him, he smirked and read the first parchment and chuckled. This was precious…muggle studies was three times a week. He couldn’t wait to torment her, and, he frowned..claim her? Mudblood, he shook his head and gasped she was ashamed of being a pureblood. “You keep my secret and I’ll keep yours” She had been adamant. Draco cringed the idea was foreign to him, she should have been ashamed of her mudblood name but it seemed she would rather be known as mudblood. Draco shook his head. He had done that. All her confidence and knowledge had riled him up. She shouldn’t have been so damn good at everything! He had spent countless hours on his holidays studying because of the disgrace her one upmanship. Granger. He shook his head catching another glimpse of himself in the mirror, his father was right he needed to clean him self up. He sighed and got on with it.
Heading down the stairs Draco heard familiar voices he walked in to the dining room. “Surprise!” Pansy, Blair, and Crabbe .” I know it’s not much mate” Blaise said as he approached his old friend. “ But Happy 18th” Draco couldn’t hide the fact that he was pleased. Suddenly Draco didn’t like this room. “Lets go to the library” He didn’t know why but he liked the library. He felt his jaw tighten; perhaps she was rubbing off on him. They reached the library door and they all went inside. The food appeared and various other treats and the friends caught up. And it wasn’t long before the subject turned to the golden trio of Harry, Ron and Hermione and Pansy spoke with her usual venom “ They saved the day again” she said “You know it would be so bad if it was Weasley and Potter…” Blaise shook his head, he didn’t know why but one look at Draco told him that she was headed for dangerous ground. He had gotten up from his chair slowly and the air seemed to shimmer. Blaise had only seen his lifetime friend like this, well, never, there was something forceful building, even Crabbe gulped but Pansy. Well Pansy was Pansy and completely oblivious, just so grateful to speaking freely again…. “least they have wizarding heritage but that filthy mud… “whoosh” Pansy hit the ground with a thud. For a moment, and it was only for a moment, Blaise thought Draco had done something, but he knew him better. “It’s a book” Crabbe said incredulously, Draco looked at Crabbe and thought, no too easy “So it is” Draco sat back down again and Blaise made his way toward the unconscious body of Pansy “For crying out loud Draco, you’re closer “ Draco smiled as his mate lifted Pansy and placed her on the couch. “Well you always were the gentlemen out of us and besides I didn’t do it!” Crabbe spoke again “Nah. The house did”.Draco rose and retrieved the offending article and gave a little laugh. Blaise and Crabbe both went over and the three of them shared the first real laugh in years. The title was hilarious “How to win friends and influence people.” The ice was broken.
They sat around the big rose wood table and Draco said solemnly. “Father’s got a new plan” Blaise nodded “They don’t give up, it’s…” he looked at Draco “I’m sorry mate but I’m going to be, and do, all those things because I want to…” Blaise paused and run his fingers through his hair, and Draco nodded “me too” Crabbe said and continued quickly, it wasn’t like him to speak but he had lost his best friend, and that did something to him. “ I don’t mind givin’ them a kick in but I don’t wanna kill people. I don’t… “ and he faltered. He looked somewhat frightened as Draco approached. It was the same look Draco himself had given his father on a couple of occasions, fear, pleading and despair. It didn’t work on Lucius; in fact it only enraged him so Draco learnt quickly to conceal it. “Crabbe I feel the same but Pansy won’t” he motioned to the still motionless form and they all laughed. It had looked so funny. “ I didn’t like what we become. Not going there again” and he shuddered. “Come on let’s see what this place has to offer. All those summers here and I never really checked out the place ” If you had told any of their fellow Slytherinns that for Draco’s 18thhe spent it with Blaise and Crabbe in a library going through the books they would have thought you’d lost your mind, or been hexed. The stuff there was amazing, From 1001 ways to piss off your parents to Ancient tomes full of sand script. The place was fascinating. Even Crabbe had sat down with a book raising the eyebrows of both Blaise and Draco and when he actually flipped a second page they just had to look. “What’s that you’re reading?” Blaise asked and Crabbe smiled ”Check it out” He closed the book and the title simply said ‘wanna fight?’ Draco smiled, the family had a sense of humour. He opened to display the table of contents. The heading was normal enough but underneath it was written ‘choose your style…turn the page’ “And I thought of wrestling..” Crabbe looked up “…well go on” Draco said getting a little impatient and Crabbe turned the page where two live drawings appeared and slowly began demonstrating the various holds. “Can I have a go” Draco asked and the tone of his voice told Blaise he had just developed a devious idea. Blaise placed himself to see. Draco opened the book to the table of contents and turned the page which simply said “Your disgusting…but if you must know” Draco raised an eyebrow and immediately it showed two terriers going for it. Blaise laughed. Draco gave the book back to Crabbe and touched him on the shoulder “Good choice” Crabbe beamed and Draco and Blaise went back to searching the shelves. “This place is awesome.”
“It’s not ours” Blaise smiled “’Course it is” Draco shook his head and proceed to tell them what little he knew of the story. He left Hermione out of it which he had found surprisingly hard. And suddenly once again Crabbe spoke “Wilson..is that Miss Wilson, you know Blaise the one with the telly and stuff” And that started a new conversation. Blaise watched his friend as he spoke. He knew Draco well enough to tell he was hiding something but the story was fascinating. Time allocated to the group of friends passed quickly. They had half an hour left and Draco suddenly realized something and shook his head at the sight before him. He was actually enjoying himself and wished she was here with them “ Pansy’s waking up” He followed Blaise’s eyes and shrugged “And?” Draco responded and his friend rolled his eyes. Pansy flew off the couch “What happened?” She said accusingly at Crabbe, afterall Blaise and Draco had been in her line of sight. “weren’t me” Crabbe said reproachfully “the house threw the book” She looked at Draco in disbelief and Blaise spoke “it’s true” Draco sniggered “knocked you clean out” She looked hurt “How long we’ve got?”
“About twenty minutes” Pansy looked suggestively at Draco who sneered in disgust “I told you after last time, never again” Blaise couldn’t believe it “How are you getting some?”
“I’m not” Blaise’s eyebrows shot up in disbelief “Look Pansy I haven’t had it for months and I still don’t want you, you’ve gotta move on, Besides we got more important things to talk about.” He gave her a quick run through on Lucius’ plan “What?!” she raised her voice in disbelief. “No more insults” her mind boggled “You mean?”
“Yes Pansy we have to play nice” She was ropeable and practically knocked the sentries down when they opened the doors. After all the Malfoys were under house arrest therefore this visit was very unorthodox, the whole situation was. Blaise looked at his friend in disbelief and Draco raised his hands “What can I say, if I don’t want her after all this….”Blaise interrupted “Oh I know it’s just you seem different. I don’t know more….” Draco smiled “Alive?” he suggested and Blaise nodded “Yeah that’s it” Draco laughed “I think you’ve had too much butterbeer” By this time they had reached the dining room. Pansy was already there, pouting “I don’t know why you don’t want me in your bed Drakie darl…”
“Stop it Pansy” his tone and stare stopped her cold “You’re cute enough go find someone else. I told you, you would never share my bed and you really oughta stop asking. It’s distasteful” He sneered “All I can say is thanks for coming” Tears welled up in her eyes but she drew a breath and turned to face the fireplace and with that she was gone. Blaise held is friend’s stare and Draco said “I told you in 5thyear, you want her, go for it.” Blaise nodded and smiled slightly “I just might do that” and he was gone. Crabbe stood alone and Draco really felt for him. He went and shook his hand “You hang in there” and Crabbe floo’d. One of the sentries followed but the other lingered ”Nice Malfoy” the sentry’s disdain was obvious.
“Well Weasel I never claimed to be that” With a quick about face Draco left to find his father.
Lucius sat in his study when he heard the familiar knock on the door. He allowed himself a small smile before saying ”Come in” He viewed his son noting he seemed somewhat different. “Father I just wanted to say thankyou” Lucius nodded “It wasn’t me, seems you have more influence than I thought” Draco frowned “Well apparently Weasley felt bad for you. Sentimental fool but I trust the time was well utilized” Lucius meaning was obvious and Draco didn’t pretend not to understand. “They all understand. It’s a very prudent approach” Draco cringed. You never complimented his father in that way. Any such remark would bring an instant explosion ‘How dare you think you’re in any position to comment’. Draco looked at the dragon sculpture and cringed he been back handed for such a comment at the tender age of 7. His father hadn’t meant for him to hit it, but his back still bore a faint scar where the tail had pierced his skin. On this occasion however, his father surprised him. “I’m glad you had a good time, how is Miss Pansy…”
“Probably crying…”Draco answered in a matter of fact way.
“Goodnight son” Draco nodded “Father” the door closed and Lucius looked at the statue and frowned. Draco dutifully sought out his mother and found her by the fire in the sitting room. “Evening mother”
“Draco my son” his mother outstretched her arms and he made his way kneeling down beside her. “I’ve come to say goodnight and thank you for allowing us some privacy” Narcissa eyes softened. Ordinarily she would have been all over them playing the perfect host
“I’m sorry we couldn’t …”
“Pay it no mind mother” he kissed her hand. “We’ll make up for” Narcissa smiled “Yes we will” She seemed troubled “I still can’t remember that spell…” Draco sadly shook his head “Pay it no heed. Is there anything I can get you?” Narcissa shook her head. “No dear” she put her hand gently on his cheek “You’re such a good boy” The sadness in her eyes quickly disappeared and she smiled “Please tell me your not going to marry that Parkinson girl” Draco was taken aback “No mother definitely not” he chuckled and this pleased seemed to please Narcissa . Draco stood up and kissed his mother on the forehead “Thankyou again” and gently added “Goodnight mum”
“Goodnight Dear”
Draco entered his room something was wrong with his mother. As he aged he noted it more and now he felt cold to the core. He thought about that dragon and how Narcissa had been wild with fury. Lucius had watched coldly and when she stopped to take a breath he had simply said “ My Dear” and in an instant she had been placated. She had, of course rushed her son to St Mungos. The story told was that Draco had been involved in a flying accident. Which was quite plausible as Draco had been flying since the tender age of two, Draco had cried telling the nurse the truth. How it was all his fault ,as he knew better than to question his father, and he best not do it again. The little boy had spoke so sincerely quiet tears streaming down his face, that the medinurse made a small note in enchanted ink.
He had been weak then. When he thought back on his life he had been weak far too often. He felt his jaw clench. No more. He had to get to the bottom of this, for his mother’s sake. He often thought of killing his father, and he knew would for her.
The night overall ended quite well as far as Hermione was concerned. She shuddered considering the way it started. Her Aunt and decided on a pizza and movie night expanding the biosphere and ordering the entertainment system. As they sat down on the couch the dining room table changed to a smaller coffee table and levitated into position. Hermione knew she was resolved about Draco. He did hate muggleborns and if things had gone different ..she shuddered and reprimanded herself. But in the half an hour before her Aunt’s arrival she had changed her mind. It was old magic she was messing with, the same power that had brought Hogwarts back from the ashes; like a phoenix she had smiled at that but the frown had quickly returned. She had connected herself to another soul with it and not just any person, but Draco Malfoy, and he turned her on. The memory of it made her feel weak at the knees. So needless to say Hermione was feeling less than confident when her Aunt arrived. “I think I’ve done something foolish”
“I find that very hard to believe but do tell” Hermione looked down at her hands. “I marked Draco” she heard her Aunt gently gasp “She pondered for a moment then spoke “I’m not here to tell you how to run your life Hermione. All I can say is you did what you had to you’ve leveled the playing field but treat it with due respect.” To her surprise she heard her Aunt chuckle. “Have you hexed him a lot over the years” Hermione’s eyes widened. The TV lay dormant as the two witches recounted Hermione’s countless indiscretions. They both agreed that’s what made Gryffindor great. You didn’t need glory by public ridicule, although that could be fun, but just knowing you done it brought you satisfaction. She usually mussed his hair, or tripped him up, once he’d been tormenting Fang and Hermione had lengthened the wizard’s cloak. He had been petrified when Fang ripped it from him (Hermione had assisted in that too). Hermione had sat in Hagrid’s cottage in fits of laugher for a good few minutes. Her Aunt shook her head, “that’s clever” her Aunt turned to Hermione ”there are a couple of things I’d like to say though” Hermione nodded “please do”, her Aunt blushed ever so slightly “I have to say he is a gorgeous looki…” she noted Hermione discomfort “ Look I don’t like the conversation starter but it has to be said. Never underestimate the power of physical attractiveness” Hermione nodded. Her Aunt gave her what appeared to be the inherited ‘don’t interrupt again’ look. “A disarming smile can be just as much of weapon as the Gryffindor sword. Now you’ve got to get him to keep his distance. He’ll be able to come to you in your dreams” Hermione was horrified. “Use it as a bargaining chip. If you become physically intimate then you will be tied to him especially if his your first” Her Aunt took Hermione’s hands in hers “Tell him where your coming from” Hermione cringed “Look from what I know dream dating or mating “ she chuckled “as we used to call it is a unique and very erotic experience. You will both feel each other but to wed you need physical contact. If his first then you will find that your…” Her Aunt shifted uncomfortably “the marriage will be automatic, but that’s not the problem” Hermione’s eyes widened, as far as she could tell that would be a huge problem “No ‘cause it’s not binding in the muggle world but He’ll be able to call to you and summon you whenever he wants.” Hermione gasped “Look if it’s a physical thing you’ll be able to alleviate it with dream dating without giving what the wizarding world considers the ultimate dowry. It sounds bad but it’s suppose to be beautiful” Her Aunt smiled, “If he’s genuine then he’ll wait. I’d imagine he has quite a lot of self control but don’t forget, so have you.” Hermione had to agree. Her Aunt looked pointedly at the TV screen “Shall we?”
“Yes we shall” Hermione smiled back. They had watched a film called the Blues Brothers. Hermione had never seen it before and thoroughly enjoyed it and made a note to see it again.. As the film ended her Aunt returned the goods explaining that the muggle world really by all accounts shouldn’t cross over too often. Points like the train station were necessary but overkill, she believed, would cause a grave imbalance in the natural order of things. ”Just a theory though” she got up and stretched “Well I better get going”
“Oh” Hermione’s eyes widened, she hadn’t even considered where her Aunt was staying; she had just figured that she was in the Ministry somewhere. “Where are you staying then?” Her Aunt grinned “At HogWarts. I’ve set up camp next to Hagrid” Hermione beamed “He’d love that”
“He says he does, you should come and visit every now and then, when you get to HogWarts.” Hermione nodded enthusiastically “Oh I will”
“There is one other thing Hermione, keep your friends close to you. They will give you strength. Love is a powerful source of old magic” Hermione hugged her and the older witch disappeared. It was then she came to decision and finally charmed the door. “Hagrid” was the password and Hermione smiled. Not many would think of that.
Draco got out the bath and tried to quiet his thoughts but it was no use. He had to go to her. He’d thought about the night and realized he now had two missions. Both involved the women he loved. He frowned slightly ‘Loved?’ did he love Hermione. She hadn’t been far from his thoughts all night. In the library he had wanted her to be there. He chuckled as he remembered Pansy getting knocked out. She would have liked that. Her and Pansy had their battles. Draco smirked well, Pansy tried but she was no match for Granger, who’d shoot her down with one quick smart arse remark. By the time Pansy had a retort, that’s if she could even think of one, Draco smirked derisively, she usually couldn’t, Granger would long gone. That was Pansy’s problem she didn’t listen. Well if she had she wouldn’t be banging on about ‘them’ He had told her all those years ago. And besides his mother did not approve. One thing Pansy’s visit had shown though. This Granger thing, whatever it was, it wasn’t just physical and felt almost out his control. Damn! … He hated having no control. As soon as he had seen Pansy he’d internally recoiled. The girl was shrill and loose but useful and up into this Granger thing she would have sufficed. He cringed he couldn’t imagine giving Hermione away once he was through. He touched his mark; it was the only mark on his body he welcomed. She’d fight him but during the night he’d come to her in her deep sleep and pleasure her. He’d build up an arsenal like that. He frowned he had to shift the balance. That last trick of hers had put her one up but not for long. He gazed hardened and he got dressed. He’d address that imbalance right now. The crow took off landing on another smaller island off the coast and transformed. With a faint glow he was gone.
