Draco was studying in the library when a flaming ball of paper appeared in front of him suddenly. As it burned down to nothing but ashes he scoffed.
"Guess that is a no then. I hope she doesn't expect me to just give up. Malfoys always get what they want."
For the next few days Hermione was showered with courting gifts of flowers, notes, and other trinkets. She was a bit taken aback by all the attention and flattered too although her two best friends were not too happy with the circumstances. Not a class would go by for the brunette witch without a note appearing always requesting the same meeting. Despite herself Hermione seemed to begin enjoying the courtship despite who her suitor was.
By Friday afternoon when yet another note appeared to her in Slughorn's potions class Hermione finally decided she would at least meet the Slytherin and see what he had to say. She could easily defend herself if need by although she did not think this courtship was a trap. She paused from her work to write down a short reply of 'ok' before charming the parchment over to the blonde boy, refusing to turn her head to see either her friends or the young Malfoy's reaction. By doing so she missed the aghast looks on the Gryffindor boys faces' and the small smile that appeared on Draco's pale face.
Just before 8pm Hermione Granger found herself climbing up the stone steps of one of the few remaining towers at Hogwarts. She took slow breaths to calm herself in preparation for this meeting. Rom and Harry had wanted to come in her defence but she knew they would do more damage then good and thus left the two in their dorms.
There was a light flickering on the walls which showed she was almost at her destination. As Hermione rounded the corner she was a bit surprised at the sight of Draco Malfoy standing by the open window looking out over the grounds. Her breath caught a little unconsciously and she shook her head and cleared her throat to notify the boy of her presence. He turned around and gave a genuine smile which caught the Gryffindor off guard. The Slytherin smoothly presented her with a single rose which she took gingerly. It was as if she was suddenly a shy first year again in his presence she felt threatened by him and at the same time intrigued. He gestured to a couple of chairs that she had not noticed in the room and they both sat down to go over what brought the unlikely duo together in this room.
"Hi... Gr- uhm Hermione." He said somewhat nervously giving away his facade of a calm collected individual. Hermione allowed him a small smile and replied civilly. They made small talk for a while although there was still an awkward tension in the air. The two had gone from using last names and insults to addressing each other by their first names that it seemed slightly surreal.
"Draco... This may be a bit blunt but... why me? I am sure you could have almost any girl in this school and yet you intentionally bought out my contract. Why? What is in it for you?" Hermione asked, the previously unspoken question that was a big cause of all the tension in the room. Draco Malfoy looked down almost embarrassed. The two of them both knew that despite his feelings on the question if an appropriate answer was not given then this courtship would fail completely.
"Well.. To be honest back when I was having a bad time of things to say the least and even before the war you were the only girl who could make me... feel. I was brought up to be a poised, calm, collected person but sometimes you would just get to me. And that time you punched me? No one else would have ever had the nerve to do that. Plus you are incredibly smart and actually beautiful when you put the effort into it like at the Yule ball... wait that sounded wrong- sorry uh..." Draco said stuttering. Hermione took pity on him and although the wording was a bit crude she knew he was only trying his best to compliment honestly which she begrudgingly appreciated.
"Draco.... I understand. All those things. You said it started before the war. Is that why you saved me when.... when you lost your father?" Hermione tentatively asked and she could physically see the Malfoy boy close himself off from her.
"What I did... Was what I felt was right at the time. Sometimes I don't know why I went with saving you... what gain do I get from it? In exchange I lost my father. He wasn't the best father but he tried hard and I appreciated that. How about we talk about less emotionally involved things and discuss your contract?" Draco said abruptly changing the subject. The two of them seemed to get along fine without anyone else around and their previously venomous banter turned friendly and somewhat flirty.
Time flew by as Hermione and Draco talked about each others lives, contracts, and a possible future. Although it seemed weird to discuss living, financial, and other aspects brought up in the contracts when the two weren't even dating they were able to come to a mutual understanding that night. While Draco knew he should address the fact of her blood he didn't in fear of ruining the little progress he had made with her that night towards a peaceful union at the least but hopefully something more fulfilling for the both of them.
The night ended with the two of them standing side by side watching the stars at the window. Hermione had almost completely let her guard down understanding the Malfoy boy was sincere about trying to see where the courtship would lead. She had never had a boy try so hard for her since Viktor so it was pleasant. She sighed contentedly and Draco tentatively reached for her hand. While the brunette flinched at the touch she looked up into the Slytherin's grey eyes and smiled when she saw nervousness and hope in his eyes. She squeezed his hand back and took time to notice how strong and yet gentle his hand was. The two of them stood there silently holding hands before the Slytherin groaned in annoyance.
"What is it?" Hermione asked and the blonde simply mumbled about the time. The Gryffindor girl used a tempus charm and was shocked to see it was past midnight. She started fretting about getting back to the dorms safely without being spotted so Draco began leading her by the hand back to the realities of the castle. On the way out she picked up the rose he had given her and they walked together down the stairs.
"Shall I escort you to your dormitory?" The Slytherin said and Hermione allowed him, not wanting to leave his company just yet. They amazingly crossed the school without running into anyone on patrol and reached the entrance to the girls dorm. The two of them fidgeted awkwardly before Hermione pulled him in for a hug. Draco seemed a bit shocked but pleased and hugged her back tightly taking in the feeling of her in his arms, the smell of her shampoo, and the feel of her breath on his neck. They pulled apart and stood at arms length for a few moments. Draco reached for the girls hand and kissed it gently causing her to blush.
The two of them wished each other a goodnight and both went their separate ways with smiles on their faces.
