AN: Well, I'm back. It's been a hectic few months, helping Bob sort out his computor issues, work on replacing his lost chaps, and then coming back to this. Sorry, I really meant to update sooner. I'm really enjoying this fic, and the research required to write it. I've put a lot of details in the future books, so I hope this one fills in fast, then I can get them posted, too.
unneeded:I like to think that Dumbledore has been around long enough to have correlated the two, muggle science and magic, so his using the terms – molecules, mass and density – would make more sense, to him at least.
Chapter Five: Lessons, Discoveries and Slytherins
The professor lifted his wand and waved it in a straight line, horizontal to the ground, over the top of the spool while chanting the spell. The spool expanded, stretching out and becoming soft and pliable. Tom wished he could be closer to see what the professor was doing that changed it from a pale brown to the paisley pinks and purples. He smirked up at the man who was obviously used to impressing the young ladies in his classes.
"The important thing is to picture the pillow that you want and concentrate on it. When you are finished, we will work on the all purpose restoration spell, Finite Incantum." As he spoke the words, Dumbledore pointed his wand at the pillow and it shrunk back into the spool. "Now. Picture your pillows and speak the spell, oh and remember the wand movement . . a slide across the air over the object or directly in front of it. Work you spells."
Tom took out his wand and aimed it at the spool, practicing the movement once before repeating it with the incantation, "Flossamooreau." His pillow grew out of the spool, blue and firm, like the pillows on his bed at home. He smiled and looked around to see who else was finished.
Darius had repeated the incantation three times, and still his spool beligerently refused to soften. Patrick was grinning at his wood-colored roll of a pillow, that looked like a larger, softer spool. Martin and Charlus were batting at each other with plain white pillows. Anthony and Argus had not managed any better than Darius.
The girls had done better. Both of the Black cousins had acceptible pillows, Cedrella's was purple and Margaret's was grey. Druella Rosier had a pretty, lacy pink one and Elizabeth Ryan had a blue one with a dragon on it.
At least the Slytherins were doing better than the assorted Gryffindors among them. Septimus Weasley's pillow looked lke it had seen better days, and Morris Purkiss had only managed to make his spool extend and thin out. It looked like a spindle, thin and smooth. Tracie Montgomery had the best example of their lot. Hers looked soft and fluffy and she was trying to help Darrell Trelawney with his.
Professor Dumbledore was moving between the desks, pressing on the pillows to check their softness. He stopped in front of Tom and frowned. "Have you practiced this before, Mr. Riddle?" he asked.
"No sir. I've only just gotten my wand for school and I didn't even know the spell, Sir." Tom answered.
"Well, it seems you are a natural. This is a fine pillow." Dumbledore said, patting it softly. "Now, reverse the spell and try to create different pillows. New shapes and colors." the professor patted his back before stopping Darius from swinging his wand so hard itseemed likely it would snap itself. "Mr. Crabbe, the spell works with strength of mind, not the force of the thrust. Are you concentrating?"
Tom smiled at Darius' expression, then aimed his wand and said, "Finite incantum." and his spool was back.
By the end of the class, most of the students had accomplished an adequate transfiguration of their spool and when released they chattered happily on their way to their next class. The Slytherins had potions with Ravenclaw, while the Gryffindors were in charms with Hufflepuff. Tom hurried toward the dungeons with Darius and Charlus, excited about a chance to talk to Eileen.
The stairs chose that moment to shift, redirecting the group of Slytherin 1st years and leaving them in an unfamiliar terrain.
"Where are we?" Darius asked but got no reply. Tom looked down the dark corridor seeing no doors and only one weak torch at the far end.
"We should go back and find another route." Cedrella stuttered.
"Don't be a chicken. You sound like a Hufflepuff." Patrick sneered.
"I'm no Hufflepuff! I just think it's the right choice. That's not the way to potions." the girl announced pointing toward the light. Something flickered in the shadows and Tom squinted at it.
"What was that?" he whispered moving toward it. He was getting further into the dark so he took out his wand and concentrated on the spell Adhara used when she checked on the children at night. "Lumos," he said and the tip of his wand began to glow softly.
"Wow! That's a great spell." Patrick whispered. "Lumos," he repeated and Toms's wand light was joined by another. Soon six wands attempted to battle the deep shadows of the corridor as the eleven-year-olds stalked the glistening lights at the end of the hall.
Tom reached it first and leaned dlown to light it with his wand. Cedrella's cousin, Margaret, who liked to be called Margie, squatted next to him and reached out to pick it up. "Stop!" Tom called before her hand could touch it. "Never touch anything until it has been checked for hexes and curses. Darius, give me that bag that you keep your chocolate frog cards in."
Darius edged forward and pushed between Tom and Margie. "It's a cup." he said as he handed the other boy his sack. Tom took it and fished out the stack of cards.
"Like a jeweled goblet." Tom agreed handing them to the other boy and scooping the into the bag and closing the tie. He slig in over his belt when he stood and he saw there was an alcove near that looked out onto another hall. At the end of the hall, light poured in and Tom saw several students milling past. One of the students, hanging back by herself, was Diane MacMillan. "Look! The Ravenclaws! Follow me."
The six Slytherins rushed down the hall, all thoughts of the goblet lost in the relief of escape from the uncomfortable situation. The alcove hallway let out on a familiar corridor and when the last of them, Charlus Potter, came through, Tom looked back to see a dark wall where they had just been. He stopped and felt the stones, searching for the entry to the hallway again. "It's gone." he said.
Darius patted the wall and Patrick checked the floor. "There's our footprints in the dust."He announced.
"Mark this wall somehow." Tom suggested in a hushed tone."I want to check it later. Right now, we need to get to class."
Patrick aimed his wand and chanted something under his breath. A stripe of blue paint splotched the wall and floor for about fifteen inches. Patrick's smile was devious. "I did that once at home and my mum nearly crucio'd me."
"How lond does it last?" Darius asked.
"It's been on the wall of my room for three years." Patrick admitted. "Even Bitsey can't get it off."
"Wow! Parkinson." Darius said before the group melded into the crouwd of students headed for potions.
