Chapter Four: Hall of Heritage
~*~*~*~
“Poor Dursleys…”
“…” Harry really didn’t know how to respond to Fred’s comment.
“Okay, mourning over!” George exclaimed cheerfully, only to rustle Harry’s hair a second later. “Don’t look so down, Harry.” He said as he stood to Harry’s left.
“Yeah,” Fred began as he stepped up to Harry’s right and messed up Harry’s brunette locks even further. “You might make George cry.” Fred and George both laughed and the brunette couldn’t help but join in their mirth.
Harry realized he really did love the twins… even their crazy antics. Maybe even more so for their craziness, really. They always seemed to know just when he needed something and were always happy to give it to him.
‘Hopefully in a naughty way here soon.’ Harry thought with a slight blush. “Thanks you two.” The brunette smiled brightly at the two, though he knew the duo had noticed his reddened cheeks. He was lucky to have the two red heads on his side, otherwise they could really embarrass him.
‘I’m lucky to have them by my side, too…’ Harry thought as he looked at himself between the duo and chuckled. ‘Well, sides actually.’
“Splendid. Mr. Potter’s relatives have been properly mourned. So, now we can get down to business.” Snipsickle clapped his hands together to get their attention, which was hard with the box still under his arm, and smiled. “If you’ll follow me Mr. Potter, I’ve something to show you.”
“Why can’t we,”
“Go with him?” George finished the question. Though whereas Fred was mildly curious, George looked darn near devastated that the goblin was even SUGGESTING the three of them be separated.
And, truth be told, Harry wasn’t too thrilled about the idea either.
“Can they come with us?” Harry inquired, because he really didn’t feel like leaving the twins anytime soon. They were a comfort to him, one he couldn’t afford to lose, and he’d prefer they stick with him.
“That’s up to you, Mr. Potter. If you are what I believe you to be, then there might be some things in which you might not be able to come to terms with right away, which will require time…” Snipsickle turned his head towards Fred and George. “Having others there might not be comfortable…”
“With all due respect, sir, I would feel uncomfortable if they were not with me.” Harry stated and was somewhat surprised with himself.
He was a strong person, he’d always had to be, so why was he acting weak all of the sudden?
‘It’s not a weakness to want to be close to those who care for you and support you. I don’t NEED it, but I WANT it. I want the emotional support George offers. I want the humorous theories that Fred gives.’ Harry smiled. He’d never been allowed such things in his life before, so it was understandable that he wasn’t willing to part with such a novelty. “I’m sure they can handle it. They can be rather helpful, in fact…” Harry paused. “When they want to be.” He chuckled.
“And don’t you,”
“Forget it, Harry!” George exclaimed happily as he quickly hugged the smaller male.
“Yes, well… shall we be off then? I’m not going to lug this box around all day.” Snipsickle frowned. “For such a small thing, it’s bloody heavy.”
The trio nodded and moved to follow the goblin, but Snipsickle only walked to the back of his office and looked at the books on the shelf. “Now which one is it today?” The goblin wondered aloud as he looked over the books carefully.
“What are you searching for?”
“Perhaps we can be of assistance.” Fred stated and stepped closer to where Snipsickle stood.
“No, you might want to step back. If I choose the wrong one, books will beat anyone near the shelf.” Snipsickle warned as he continued to search for the correct tome. “Trust me, those buggers hurt when they knock you upside the head.” The goblin grumbled.
“Shouldn’t you know,”
“Which one it is?”
“This is your office after all.” The twins stated in unison with a chuckle.
“Not when they change every day. I swear, it’s the worst joke ever.” Snipsickle shook his head.
“What are you saying?” George asked, as if shocked that the goblin could say such a thing about a prank.
“It’s bloody brilliant!” Fred exclaimed and the twins grinned at one another.
‘Heaven help us all.’ Harry thought with a soft shake of his head.
By the time this was all said and done, the Weasley twins would have a whole new line of pranks and jokes for the shop; and Harry felt slightly sorry for anyone said pranks were played on. To clean up glitter was bad enough, but to be beat with books when the correct one changed daily? That would be down right annoying to any unsuspecting victim.
‘But utterly hilarious.’ The brunette smiled and wondered if they could get by with trying it out on Hermione first. She was their resident bookworm, after all. And she’d forgive them… eventually.
“I believe its creator had it in for me.” Snipsickle sighed. “And all because I turned his cereal into hoppy-puffles once.” He chuckled at the memory.
Harry was about to say something when one of the books caught his eye. It would appear to be just a normal book, nothing special really expect for maybe its size, and quite easily overlooked. But it had caught the brunette’s attention. The old tome sat upon a shelf probably a head or two taller than the goblin, and it glowed. Sure, to Harry everything in the room glowed, but this book was brighter than the rest.
"Mr. Snipsickle, what would give the book away?" Harry inquired, still rather focused on the one book.
"Huh? Oh, well, that's the tricky part. It radiates power, more so than the rest. The book of the day holds more magic than the rest, for the moment, which is damn near impossible to sense when the entire room is teeming with power." Snipsickle chucked. "As infuriating as it can be, I have to admit... the man was a bloody genius." The goblin smiled fondly, but Harry was too shocked to notice.
Magic? The whole room glowed and one book was glowing more than the rest. Was it because of the power? Was Harry really, truly, seeing magic itself? Was that even possible, or was he just losing it? Could it be possible for someone to see magic in its entirety?
'There's one way to test it.' Harry thought as he walked over to where Snipsickle stood and grabbed a hold of the book which glowed far brighter than the rest. 'Nothing happened.' He thought, and made a mental note to look into the possibility of someone having the power to see magic.
"Hand it here, Mr. Potter." Snipsickle said softly and reached out a hand to the brunette.
Harry pulled the tome from the shelf with some effort...
'Out of all the books in the place, today's had to be the biggest, heaviest bloody one.'
... and handed it to the goblin.
"Why..." Harry had to ask. It was odd. The older male had stopped the twins from helping him, but hadn't said a word to Harry. Snipsickle hadn't stopped Harry in the slightest, as if he somehow knew Harry would choose the right one.
"You didn't ask me what you could do to help, or how to go about searching. You asked me what would be the deciding factor." The goblin replied as way of explanation. "Now, enough dilly-dallying." He said as he opened the massive tome.
Three sets of eyes were watching the goblin curiously as he skimmed the pages. They all had questions they really wanted to ask, but they decided to leave Snipsickle to his work... Well, at least that's what the trio had planned on doing. But Harry couldn't help himself and had to ask...
"What are you looking for?"
"You must know what you're looking for, and why you‘re searching for it, to find it." Was the reply Harry received.
"That didn't answer the question," George commented.
"In fact, it has led to more." Fred chimed in.
"I'm looking for a password. The man who created it set up several defenses. One can not find it unless they have in their mind what they are looking for and why they are looking for it." Snipsickle explained, though his eyes never left the pages.
"And what's the "why" Snips,"
"What's so secretive?"
The trio had been asking questions and not getting any real answers. Harry was slightly frustrated by the fact, he would admit, but the twins? Harry could tell the twins were bored now. They were even coming up with a nickname for their goblin host.
Said goblin paused before his eyes left the pages and looked up at the duo. "No one has called me that in a long time."
Harry couldn't tell by the tone whether Snipsickle was angry or not, but he hoped not. It wouldn't do to get thrown out of their meeting because of Fred and George's playfulness. Sirius would be most upset with him, if Harry’s godfather were still around that is…
From what Snipsickle’s letter had said, Sirius had known he wasn’t long for this world and had made sure that Harry would be taken care of. Snipsickle had even informed Harry that Sirius’ public will was just a front for the public and those of the Order who would be interested. Sirius’ real will had been left in the goblin’s capable hands, and Harry would be most perturbed if the twins got them in trouble before he got a chance to hear what his godfather had to say.
And, more importantly, Harry wanted to know why Sirius had kept it from the Order.
"Thank you." The goblin turned back to the book in his hands, but he couldn't hide the smile that graced his features.
Harry was slightly shocked. Not just because the trio wouldn't be getting into trouble for the nickname, but because a goblin had said “Thank you.” Sure, Snipsickle was different from other goblins that Harry had seen, but this… this would take some getting used to. “Snips” was fun and polite… AND Snips liked pranks!
‘I think we just found a new friend and ally in the most unlikely of places.’ Harry thought with a grin.
"But you are not to use that term outside these walls, it wouldn't do for the other goblins to hear...." Snips stated as he looked over the pages. “They can be a right nasty bunch, and giving them any ammo is just…“ The goblin froze and his eyes widened, as if he couldn't believe what he was seeing.
“Did you remember something?” Harry questioned. "Or did you find it?"
"I..." Snips started and shook his head slightly. "I think so, but... it's not what I'm used to. Usually it‘s a word or two, but this…"
"What does it say?" Harry inquired. Anything that could shake the fun loving goblin was probably one hell of a prank, and Harry wanted to know what it was all about; he knew the twins wanted to hear the answer as well.
"Snips, have you found the child yet?" Before the trio could respond to the strange question uttered from the goblin, the office began to shake.
Harry watched in awe as the wall they stood in front of glowed brighter and sparked. It was like watching Muggle fireworks and the brunette couldn't help but enjoy the show. After all, the Dursleys had never let him watch fireworks with them, unless they were on the television; and even then it had been a rare occurrence.
Two sets of hands on his arms, however, snapped Harry out of it and forced him to take several steps back. Snips, on the other hand, didn't budge. The goblin seemed quite content to stand there as the wall, quite possibly, self-destructed.
Could Snipsickle not see the way the wall sparked?
"Come on,” The goblin glared at the bookcase, “We haven't got all day." They couldn't believe it, Snipsickle was actually standing there goading the wall!
"Well, that's somewhat reassuring I suppose…"
"Yeah, either there is nothing to fear," Fred began.
"Or Snips has lost it." George finished as the duo just stared.
"I have a feeling it's option one." Harry stated as he turned to look at the twins. "Though the second is probably true as well." He laughed softly. “We all wouldn’t get along so swimmingly otherwise.”
When Harry looked back to make sure their new friend was alright, Snips stood next to a large doorway and looked impatient.
“Seriously, these things are bloody heavy.” Snips commented, referring now to both the box underneath his arm and the massive book within his grasp. “Come on, the sooner we get inside the sooner my arms can rest.” He stated as the grand doors swung open to allow them all entrance.
The trio followed the goblin inside and Harry gasped as he was blinded by an intense white light upon entering the room beyond.
“You alright, Harry?”
“Why are you covering your eyes?” Fred questioned after George had sensed Harry’s discomfort.
Harry was ready to turn back and march right out those doors, back into Snipsickle’s office, when he heard the tell tale signs that the large doors had closed. He was trapped in here, and the white glow of the room seemed determined not to let Harry see.
“The room is probably rather blinding for him. The entire hall was created from a massive amount of magic, so it’s no wonder.” Snipsickle’s tone was rather calm and it reassured Harry a little, even though he was blind for the time being.
“You speak as if…”
“Harry can see the magic.” Fred’s voice was a comfort, but the red head’s hand caressing his shoulder reassuringly was even more so.
“He can. He wouldn’t have been able to hand me the correct book so effortlessly otherwise.” Snips nodded, even though he knew full well that Harry wouldn’t be able to see it. “The signs are there… but this will prove it one way or another.” He stated as he set the book down on the floor and, as far as Harry could tell, the chest as well.
But what the goblin was doing didn’t matter to Harry at that moment. It was what the shorter male had said that was Harry’s focus. Snipsickle knew that Harry could see magic. It wasn’t just the goblin’s speculation, it had been spoken with such conviction one had to believe. The older male’s words had just proved Harry’s theory, made it all the more tangible, and he didn’t have a clue what to do about it.
“How can someone just wake up one morning and be able to SEE magic?” Harry asked. He’d never heard of such a thing before, so he really didn’t know how to respond.
“You’re sixteen today, Harry.” Snipsickle began, using the brunette’s first name in an effort to be less formal and more soothing. “Those who have creature blood usually undergo the change on their sixteenth. It can be rather painful, I hear. Do you not recall such an event?” The goblin’s tone was curious, and Harry frowned.
As a matter of fact, he DID remember the pain. And lots of it. The burning he’d felt, as if his entire being was being melted down to be forged into something new, was still rather fresh in his mind. And if this happened to everyone of creature blood on their sixteenth birthday then…
“Sweet sixteen my arse.” There was nothing sweet about it! “Wait…” There was something else about Snipsickle’s explanation which caused a nagging sensation in the back of his head. “I thought only Purebloods had creature blood…”
“That’s what they want you to believe.” The goblin’s voice answered, though it was much closer now. “But that’s not entirely true. Creatures can mate with anything compatible with them, which is just about any magical being really.”
There was a moment of silence, as if Snips were composing himself, before the goblin’s little informative lecture continued.
“But creatures were forbidden from mating with members of the Wizarding World… Because the Ministry was afraid they, and their offspring, would take away all the partners or something.” Snipsickle sounded slightly disgusted at this fact. “But they are wrong. The world itself is made up of magic. Born from it. If there is an increase in need for magical beings for mates, then there will be more Muggleborn witches and wizards to keep up with the demand… but the Ministry is blinded by its prejudice, much like you are blinded by the magic now, Harry.”
Harry could hear a clink, like crystal, from the goblin’s general direction. Though it was obvious that Snips was much closer than he had been. Harry didn’t care though, his mind was reeling.
Everything that Harry had thought he’d known about the Ministry of Magic had just about been turned upside down. They were supposed to uphold the laws, enforce justice, and keep the Light of the Wizarding World shining. How could it be that they were prejudice? And why could they condone such things as keeping a person, creature blood or not, from their mate? It was foolish and right down wrong!
“But things can change, Harry. There are many roads in life that one can take. Many go with the flow and just walk the path many others have walked before them. And then there are people like you…”
Harry jerked as something sharp cut his hand, though he could tell without seeing it that it was only a superficial wound. Still, the surprise of a sudden attack on his person really got the adrenaline pumping and now he was fidgety, his lack of sight not improving the matter.
Both twins placed a hand on his shoulders and rubbed some of the tension away. If they were calm with what was going on, then Harry felt there was no need to panic. Even if he didn’t like the situation.
“Harry, you take the road less traveled… No, that’s not quite it. You are the type that forges your own path and you aren’t the type to care what others think. I believe you are the one who can help the Ministry see the error of their ways… or bring about the change yourself…” Snipsickle’s voice drifted away and Harry listened in to try and figure out what the goblin was up to.
Harry heard the crystal again, the sound of which somewhat reminded him of the crystal like orb the prophecy was held in back in the Ministry. It sounded as if it were being mounted somewhere and the slight screeching, like metal on metal, made Harry think of a fastening for a jewel.
“Now…Open your eyes.”
Harry did so, then reluctantly removed his hands from over his eyes, and gasped. This time not in pain, but in awe of what had been revealed to him. The room still glowed, but it was no longer a blinding white. Now the power was a soft, soothing amber which put him at ease. And though the subtle changes were magnificent, it was nothing compared to what now adorned the walls.
“It’s like back at Grimmauld. But the Black family tree wouldn’t be here.” Harry commented as he looked at all the branches and the multitude of faces.
“No, Harry, this isn’t the Black family tree. This is YOUR family tree.” Snipsickle smiled. “Welcome, Mr. Potter, to the Hall of Heritage.”
