For an entire week since I left Severus's classroom, I ignored him as much as I could which wasn't hard because it seemed he tried to ignore me also. That was fine by me, though- if he was going to be stubborn, then so was I!
I spent my days reading; I finished all the history books which mostly talked about the war and the Dark Lord's rise to power. I also read and concocted all the new potions that were created in my 64 year absense. Instead of going to the Potion's classroom, I bought my own cauldron and collected my own ingredients. A small closet in the sitting area of my room was reserved for potion making. And right beside that were new bookshelves for mybooks which I have also been collected. I found that many muggle books I read back then are also being read today, and I found some new interesting books as well. The muggle books I read in the privacy of my own room, however.
The DADA teacher, Professor Moody, was kind enough to give me some tips on curses, though he always seemed distracted with the Potter boy. Professor Moody was odd and a little scary, but most of the students seemed to like him.
I tried to sit in on a divinations class but found it rubbish and said so to my father, though he defended her. I said nothing more about it, and continued to move from one class to another learning as much as I could, feeling more and more like one of the students.
On many evenings, Hermione would come into my room and we would discuss different topics as well as help her with her potions that gave her trouble, which weren't that many. There were other students who sought my help and after realizing I knew more about advance potion that I thought I did, I agreed to tutor students in NEWT levels which greatly boosted the morale of many students. I suspected Severus wasn't so helpful with some students.
When I wasn't reading, sitting in class, or helping students, I sat with my father in his office making up for all the lost years.
I cast a patronus that flew around the room, then circled me, it's phoenix wings taking me into it's light. I was truly my father's daughter. Not only did I have his stubborness, auburn hair (though his have turned white), but we also shared the same patronus: a rare phoenix.
"What is on your mind, Daughter?" he asked me in the privacy of his office where we could be ourselves- he could call me Daughter and I could call him Daddy.
"It's nothing," I said lazily as the patronus dissappeared.
"Something must be," he urged on.
"I don't want to talk about it, Father," I said solidly, sagging into a large armchair.
"Does this have something to do with a certain professor?" he asked with a smile.
My mouth dropped as I looked at him, then I quickly recovered myself, "not it does not! I could care less about him."
"So it does," he said knowingly.
"Father, don't pry into my business please. You know I hate it when you do that," I whined.
"If you would tell me, I would not have to pry."
I sighed, "it's just that I thought Severus and I were friends. And then he said that he only treated me the way he did because you were my father..... I thought.... Well I thought he liked me because of me." I felt like a teenager again, whining to my father about my life.
"Do you have feelings for Severus?" he asked with a slight smile.
"What?! No!!" I defended, "I just... you know... I thought we were friends. That's all." Why was I, a 26 year old, acting like a teenager all of the sudden? For goodness sakes, I had been married and I had child once.
He sighed and sat on the arm of my chair, petting my red hair, looking off in the distance. "You must understand that Severus is a complicated man. I have known him as a child and truth be told he has a hard time expressing his feelings. If it means that much to you, let him explain and seek for your forgiveness."
I sighed, "If he wanted forgiveness he would have asked!"
There was a knock on the door and with a flick of a wand, the door opened to reveal Severus wearing his usual scowl.
"Ah, Severus! We were just speak about-" my father started but I interrupted him by standing up.
"I was just leaving," I said and quickly left the room before my father could embarrass me.
That night I took my dinner to my room and caught up on "Anna Karenina" by Tolstoy. Then came a soft tap on my door. It must be Hermione again, she always comes by the same time.
"I brought up some extra pie with me we could share-" I said as I opened the door with a mouthful of vegetables.
But it was not Hermione in the doorway, it was instead the dreaded Severus.
I chewed up and swallowed my vegetables quickly, then wiped my mouth with my sleeve (how attractive...)
"Sorry, I did not realize you were busy," he said plainly.
"No, just eating," I said covering my mouth with my hand as I tried to get bits of food that were stuck to my teeth with my tongue.
"Were you expecting someone?" he asked with one eyebrow raised.
"Oh, I thought you were Hermione," I put my hand down.
"Granger," he said curtly, "that girl comes by here every night."
I was surprised that he noticed she came by my room, had he been observing?
"yes," I said and we both stood there in awkward silence. Both looking in different directions trying to avoid each other's eyes.
Finally, he said, "I came here to apologize. Your father said I have hurt you feelings-"
Then I interrupted him, "I'm sorry my father said that to you. He shouldn't have. Good bye." I quickly pushed to shut the door, but he blocked it with his foot, then gently pushed it open again.
I couldn't believe my father had told him! I knew it was a bad idea to tell him anything, he always meddled in my affairs since I was a little girl and it seems that 64 years had not changed that. I would have to speak to him about this.
"I'm not here to apologize because your father wanted me too, Ms. Harlow. I came to apologize because I said something to hurt your feelings and I did not mean it. What I had meant to say before, on that day, was that I already had respect for you because you are the Headmaster's daughter. And I was right in doing so because as a woman, you should be respected. I hope you can forgive me, and speak to me again," he said calmly but with sincerity in his voice.
"So, you're not just being nice to me because of my dad?" I asked.
"I find your company.... enjoyable," he said in a low voice as if afraid someone may overhear him.
I smiled and my body hugged him, without any permission from my mind. I didn't even mind that he didn't hug me back.
"I'm glad, I forgive you...." Then I looked down and blushed, "And I'm so sorry for acting like such a child! I should have just confronted you instead of ignoring you, I wasn't very adult about it and I'm sorry."
The corners of his mouth turned up to show the tiniest smile, "good night Ms. Harlow."
"It's Eileen, remember?" I said, reaching for his arm and holding on.
"Yes, of course," he said as my hand slid down to his hand- he grew tense.
"Does it bother you to call me by my first name?" I asked.
"No, it's just that my mother's name was Eileen," he confessed.
"Oh, I'm sorry," I said realizing that his mother had probably already died. "You don't have to call me that if you don't want."
He shook his head slightly, "It's alright.... Eileen."
"Well, good night then... Severus," I said and let him go, then closed the door. I leaned back on the door and slid down to the floor.
"What is wrong with you?!" I asked myself aloud. Why was I acting like a teenager all of the sudden? "Snap out of it, Eileen! He's just a man!"
The next morning I readied myself for the day and instead of going down to breakfast, decided to start on a new potion- the polyjuice potion. It would take a long time to brew anyways, so I decided to do this carefully as it was a complicated potion with horrible consequences if done incorrectectly.
I put in the last ingredient needed for this part, an ounce of crude antiomony, when I heard a knock on my door. I wondered who it could be as it was still early and students should either be finishing up breakfast or heading to their first class of the day.
I opened the door to find Severus looking very worried.
"Is everything alright?" I asked copying his worried look.
His face relaxed, "No. I mean, yes. Everything is fine. I was only wondering why you did not come up for breakfast."
"Oh. Well I wasn't really hungry," I said, confused at his worry.
"Right. Well. Sorry for intruding," he said.
"I was just starting on a polyjuice potion," I explained some more.
His eyebrows raised, "Really? How is it coming along?"
"It's good. But of course it takes a month to properly finish, so I'll to see then if I did it correctly," I said motioning to the opened closet with the couldron bubbling on top of a pull out shelf.
He walked over to it, stirring the contents, "yes, yes. So far it's good, it doesn't seem as if there were any mistakes, the right color and texture at this stage of the process."
"Why thank you, Professor. Always good to know that I'm doing a potion right from a Potions Master," I said smiling.
"My first class will be starting, good day," he said as he was leaving, then turned around again.
"Perhaps, you could come to my class today?" he asked.
I smiled at his invitation.
"It's the students," he said quickly, "I'm going over NEWTs today and as they are having such a hard time on the simplest tasks, I believe they will need even more help with this... If you don't mind..."
I took my long black robe from it's stand by the door and quickly thread my arms through it, letting it cover me partially, though still having my peach knee length cotton dress beneath. To be honest, I did not know how women my agedressed in this time, but I had always like dresses and found them likeable in any occassion at any time as something in fashion that will never be out of style.
"It would be my pleasure, Severus," I said and locked the door behind me.
We walked the distance from one end of the dungeons to another, my beige 2 inchkitten heels making quick *click* *click* noises with each step as I tried to keep up with Severus's long, quick strides.
He stopped abruptly and I ran onto his back. He turned around, "Sorry. Am I walking too fast?"
I laughed, "Yes!"
He smirked, "walk beside me."
I did so and he walked slower, this time taking cue from me and copying my pace.
"Thank you, but I was keeping up," I said in my defence.
"I know," he said and held the door open for me to enter into the potions classroom.
The students were already there and started whispering to each other as they watched their Potions Professor hold the door for me as well as the chair to his desk, offering me to sit. I smiled at his gentleman attitude.
"Well, what are you all waiting for? Copy the notes on the board and open your books!" he said fiercely, his attitude changing faster than anyone could turn around.
During their potions making, which was to take up the rest of the class period, every student in the classroom was having trouble brewing their potion.I tried to offer them as much help as I could, jumping from one student to another, but unfortunately I was not able to help them all. Those I was able to help however, recieved better marks for their potions.
After class, Severus sorted out the student's potions.
"Well, that turned out better than I expected," he stated as he sat behind his desk.
"Really? I thought it was horrible!" I said putting a stool in front of his desk and sitting on it.
He chuckled, "half the class actually passed. Much better than only a handful that usually do."
"Then why don't you help them Severus?" I asked.
"I do help them, what do you think I'm doing in class?"
"It's a little hard to learn when you intimidate your students so," I stated.
"Potions is a difficult subject to learn. If I am not strict with them, they will become lax and then NO ONE will pass the exams or the class!" he argued.
I sighed, there was no winning this one.
He looked up at me, "I'm sorry. I did not mean to yell at you."
"It's alright, I see now that you do care for your students. I still think that if you ease up on them a little bit they wouldn't be so terrified to ask for you help," I said making my point.
"I'll put some thought into it," he said.
The next class period was better. He only had one outburst, and did not criticize any of the students, though he didn't fail to point out everything wrong in their potions. The students were amazed at their professor's decorum and wondered why he was acting *nice*. Or at least the nicest he's ever been.
Though not many talked during the class for fear of ruining their Professors good mood, I did hear my name in whispered conversations a few times as his reason for the nice turn around today.
"Shall we go to the Great Hall for lunch?" he asked putting away the rest of the classwork when the last of the student was gone.
"Yes, I'm famished!" I said jumping off the stool.
"You should have eaten breakfast," he said.
"Well I wasn't hungry THEN," I smiled at him.
He smirked, "and now you're paying for your ignorance."
"You are a mean man, Severus," I said to him.
He hovered above me, "Do you really think so?"
I rolled my eyes like so many of his students do, "of course not. But you tease me."
He leaned in closer to me, still hovering a good foot or so above me, "tease you?" A playful smile played on his lips.
"Yes, you tease me," I whispered because he was so close.
"Hmmm," he said then turned away. I exhaled a breath I didn't know I was holding and followed him out the door and up to the Great Hall.
I ate a hearty potato soup and then cut a ham sandwhich diagonally. After finishing the soup and the half of the sandwhich I was full, but did not want to leave the unfinished sandwhich because I hated wasting food.
I said so to Severus who then offered to eat my sandwhich if I agreed to eat a share of his vanilla ice cream which was nestled in a small curved glass bowl. I smiled at his childishness and nudged his arm.
"Let me see you eat it, then," I said putting the sandwhich in front of him.
He ate it quickly in three bites, "satisfied?"
"Yes," I said smiling.
He then put the small bowl of ice cream between us and we took turns dipping our spoon in it.
"In a better mood, I see," my father whispered to me.
I turned to him slightly, though still leaning towards Severus.
"Yes... Well... Next time I would appreciate it if you would ask for my permission first before meddling in my affairs," I said more teasingly and less as a scold.
He only turned back to his food and chuckled softly.
I spent the rest of the day helping Severus with his classes, fortunately, one of them had Hermione and it was a welcomed change to have a brilliant student who didn't need my help. During dinner, I gathered up some food on a plate and explained to Severus that I would be dining in my room with Hermione so that we could go over a new subject she wanted to learn more about from her charms class. He looked a little sad, if not also a little cross, but did not anything more.
The entire time Hermione was there, she kept looking at me oddly. Finally I asked her what was on her mind.
"I was just wondering about Professor Snape," she said.
"What about him?" I asked, now curious.
"He seemed to be in a good mood today, don't you think?" she asked.
I smiled, "yes, he was."
She bit her lip, "forgive me if I cross any lines, Ms. Harlow. But today at lunch, I saw you and Professor Snape. So did many of the students."
I raised my brows, "is that so?... Well, what did every one thing of it?"
"Oh I don't know," she said like she had regretted bringing up the subject. "They're juvenilles, really."
I laughed at her discomfort, "Severus and I are friends. I know that he is very hard on his students and I'm trying to help him soften up a bit."
We continued our discussion and right after she left, Severus showed at my doorstep.
"Good night," he said to me.
"ummm. Good night?..." I said back. Then he turned and walked towards his door.
I stepped out of my room and walked up to him before he could open his door.
"Is that it?" I asked, "you knock on my door at 9 o'clock just to say good night?"
"Yes," he said simply.
"Oh," I said, "good night then."
I walked back to my door and as I closed the door, it hit a force preventing it from closing. I turned around to find Severus holding the door. He took a step toward me, leaned in and kissed me, ever so gently,on the cheek.
"Good night," he whispered.
