Molly cooked shepherds' pie for dinner that night and the table was filled with laughter. Calamity always seemed less impending when a good meal was there to distract people. Even Sirius joined in the joviality. It was the first time since she had returned that Caridei saw him laugh.
"Caridei" Mad Eye grumbled from the end of the table, "you'll start back at the Ministry in a week.Kingsley has seen to it. You'll need to change yourself and your knew name will be Susan Landings. You'll be working with Malfoy..."
"Lucius?" Caridei interrupted,' there has to be a different position...why not under Shaklebolt?"
"Lucius is y our best chance of getting back to He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named." Lupin picked up, " When the time is right you will reveal your true self, a become a death eater again."
"Put me in Arthur's Department. They know he was in the Order, using me to spy on Arthur would be useful to them."
"Too risky, " Mad Eye said, taking a swig from his flask, "You ignored the call, so you'll have to work double to get back in good graces. Besides, what with Malfoy being a Governor at Hogwarts, you can keep a weather eye open on the school, from a different angle. Malfoy is back on the top right now with the Death Eaters. Convince him, and The Dark Lord will be a lot more likely to believe as well.
Caridei reluctantly accepted the truth. Lucius Malfoy was one of the most deplorable wizards that she could think of. At Hogwarts, he had been relentless in pursuit of her, despite the differences in houses and age. After puberty hit Caridei in the middle of her first year, the conquest of the pretty little Gryffindor pureblood became a new favorite Slytherin game. Lucius, a fifth year, had been a crucial player. However, Caridei willingly gave the trophy to Sirius well after Lucius had left the school.
His lust did not subsided during the First Wizarding War, in spite of his marriage to Narcissa. She was pregnant with their son Draco, when Caridei became a Death Eater and cared not what her husband did. Narcissa had a mother's glow, but no love in her eyes for her Lucius. Having free reign from her only fueled Lucius' lust. Often he took lovers, as did many Death Eaters, but it was Caridei that he focused on. Others thought it was hilarious, but The Dark Lord himself soon became interested in a union between his highest ranking Death Eater and the powerful little witch who eluded him. It had taken all her cleverness to stay out of Lucius Malfoy's bed. When Harry survived and Voldemort fell, Caridei took her opportunity and fled.
Now she would have to beg for mercy and hope that she would be allowed to return. Convincing Lucius would not be easy, and she was wary of what means she would have to use to do it.

After dinner, the women worked together to clean the kitchen. Caridei dried dishes like a muggle while Tonks and Molly used their wands to wash and tidy up. Caridei has fallen into a rhythm in America, and after 14 years, it was hard to not keep up her old habits. The women laughed and complained about men and the children (the twins in particular) as Caridei listened on. She sensed the nervousness in both of them, but especially with Molly. Almost her whole family was in The Order and Caridei knew that Molly thought she had too much too lose.
Caridei grabbed another plate from the sink and watched the water run down the smooth stoneware. There was something mesmerizing about the drops of water beading and falling back down into the basin of the sink. As it ran own, droplets slowly merged together, forming small lines. The lines began to move around, like tiny worms, connecting and shifting, forming letters. The plate was talking to her.
"the labyrinth"
When the last dish was in its place, Caridei politely excused herself from the company to take a short evening walk in the garden. As she headed down the hallway towards the garden door, she came face to face with Harry. he looked at her and for a brief second, she saw a flash of anger in his eyes.
"Caridei," his voice was monotone, "I...I wanted to ask you something."
"What is it Harry?" She asked the question, but she already knew the answer to it. He had been silent for most of her time so far at Grimmauld Place. He was brooding of something, everyone could tell.
"Why were you...are you a Death Eater?"
"The Burkes, my family, are pureblood. And like the Malfoys and the Blacks, are elitist. Though it was odd that I was placed in Gryffindor when I was a first year, it was not too far fetched for me to play the roll of Death Eater after my time at Hogwarts, during the first war. Plus, my abilities make me very useful, even if I was not in the proper house for a pure blood family. No other Death Eater is a metamorphmagus."
Harry nodded, "They barely tell us anything, especially me." Suddenly it was clear why the boy had been so angry.
"I was not allowed to know some of the secrets either Harry, should I be discovered and tortured I would have given up too much. The less I knew about the goings on of The Order, the easier it was for me to cover it up. They only want to protect your Harry."
"By not saying anything? How can we fight against something that we know nothing about?"
"You are not expected to fight..."
"I want to. He killed my parents." Harry took a deep breath, "How close where you?"
"Your mother was my best friend. I loved your parents very much." she paused, but continued when she saw the expectant look in the boy's eyes. "They were both kind and had bigger hearts than anyone I knew. Your mother always found the good in everyone, a trait that I envy even today. Your father was a great man, strong and brave. They loved each other and you. You were the pride of both their lives, Harry." Caridei closed her eyes as memories that he held at bay began to slip through. She had lived with Lily just after Hogwarts. Everyone; the girls, Sirius, Peter, Remus, they had all spent Christmas at James' that year. The Potters married not long after that. "I was there when you were born. As was Sirius. I am honored to have been their friend. I was honored when they asked me to be your godmother..."
"Wait," Harry interrupted, "my...godmother."
"Well, yes. James and Lily thought that Sirius and I would end up together. Had circumstance been different they probably would have been right. They named him godfather and me your godmother. Harry, I thought you knew..."
"I knew about Sirius, but not about you." Rage reflected in his eyes again. "so you really did leave everyone. You left me too! My godfather taken to prison, my godmother a coward that no one could find, and me, living in a cupboard at my Aunt and Uncle's. It seems that instead of finding out answers, I'm only getting more questions."
"Dumbledore wouldn't let me take you with me, he said you couldn't know. It's one reason I left."
"Sirius would've taken me anyway."
"When Sirius was taken to Azkaban, I went for you. Dumbledore had already taken you to your aunt's. He said you would be safest there. I tried, Harry. I begged him to let me have you. I assured him that I would keep you save. He forbid me from even seeing you. You couldn't know about our world. When he told me that, I knew that I had to leave.
"If you loved him, if you loved me, if you loved my parents, then how could you leave?" Harry was fuming. Caridei's heart was shattering all over again.
"That is something, I can't explain. It is something you have to experience. I pray you never know that loneliness. Sometimes, it isn't all black and white, Harry."
"Right, well I guess I've got a lot to learn then." He said, glaring at her for a second longer before storming up the stairs to the room he shared with Ron.

Caridei's feet led her to the garden and then the mouth of the Labyrinth. She saw nothing. She knew nothing. She felt nothing. Her mind was working frantically to quell the flood of memories and emotions. Each moment was more difficult and it would soon be enough to send her running again. She had to get to Sirius. She had promised him she would come to him. She knew that it would all fade in his arms.
Just inside the labyrinth he caught her. Their lips met and her feelings melted. Caridei let herself fall apart under his kiss. Her tears flowed freely when they broke. "What is it?" he asked, perplexed.
"I'm so sorry,' Caridei whispered between sobs. "Sorry for doubting. Sorry for leaving. Sorry for you, for James and Lily. For being a coward. For all of it. I was scared. I was alone. I had no one, but that' isn't a reason. I'm so sorry." she buried herself in his green jacked and sobbed again.
Caridei took in his scent and felt her body relaxing. His smell had always calmed her. The scent of musk, mixed with liquor. The scent of him. He held her close and caressed her as she calmed down. After the last tear fell, Sirius lifted her chin.
"Now, we can't have this." he chided as he wiped her face clean. "You will be a Death Eater. You can't be crying. What Death Eater ever felt sorry for themselves, hmm?" His smile warmed her inside and she was suddenly very conscious of his hand on the small of her back. "I know, Caridei Burke. I know what you did. I know what you thought. I know what you went through. What you felt. You are not a coward. You have no reason to be sorry" He kissed her again, deeply. She felt her own hunger growing.
"I will be a Death Eater soon. Your enemy. In a week, I will hate you."
"Then let's not waste time" he answered with a smirk. He killed her again as he took her by the waist Caridei felt he familiar pull at her navel, followed by the crushing sensation as they apparated away from the garden.
