Chapter 4: Holiday at the House of Snape
The end of November came and went, and the holidays were fast approaching. Everyone was hurrying to finish their Christmas shopping, even just two days before vacation started. It was a Hogsmeade weekend, and almost everyone who was allowed had flocked to the little village. I had already finished all my shopping, so I was taking this opportunity to get some extra practice with Snape.
We had just finished a couple rounds of Occlumency, and were taking a breather before we moved on to Ligilimency.
“Where are you going for the holidays Professor?”
He shrugged before answering.
“My manor, as always.”
I nodded mutely. I had seen memories of his manor. It was a lonely place, dark and dreary, with only the house elves for company.
“What about you, Miss Youngblood?”
Now it was my turn to shrug.
“I’ll be staying here.”
He raised a brow.
“You won’t be leaving to visit anyone?”
“Where would I go? I have no family, and no home. The Malfoys would hardly welcome Slytherin’s outcast, and I won’t impose myself on the Weasleys. Merlin knows they don’t need another mouth to feed with Hermione and Harry there, as well as their own brood.”
He was quiet for a moment or two, as if considering something.
“If you wish, you may visit my manor. It will be a better opportunity for your lessons.”
I looked over at him, but he had his back to me, sorting through his potion stores.
I could have just sworn I heard an undercurrent of something...loneliness, perhaps?
He continued to refuse to face me, and I grinned a little.
“That would be wonderful Professor. Thank you.”
He finished what he was doing and turned to face me, showing no signs of any unusual emotion.
“Think nothing of it. You are by far my best student, and it would be shameful to leave you at the mercy of the rest of these dimwits staying behind.”
We shared a good laugh at that, then it was back to work on Ligilimency.

“Here we are.”
Snape had to steady me as I almost tumbled out of the fireplace. I felt quite nauseous, and decided I really didn’t like the floo network. He released his supportive hold on my arm as soon as I could properly stand, and sent for a house elf. Immediately, an older looking elf appeared.
“Dolby, please show Miss Youngblood to her room, and get Mizzy to help her clean up for dinner.”
Dolby bowed and led me up a set of stairs to a long hallway. We passed several closed, dusty looking doors, then came to two sets of double doors, one with the Slytherin emblem, the other bare. I was led to the set of bare doors, and Dolby turned and bowed.
“I hope the Mistress finds everything satisfactory. Mizzy will be up shortly to assist the Mistress, and Dolby is never far away if he is needed.”
I nodded and entered, sitting my suitcase down. The room was made of the same dark stone as the rest of the mansion, with no windows, and a big crystal chandelier suspended from the high ceiling to give light. The bed was a big four-poster, probably king sized, with a black silk down comforter and silver satin sheets and pillows. The stone floor was covered in lush, soft black carpet, and there was an oak dresser to the right of the bed, and a wardrobe to the left.
On the left wall was a door, leading to an ornate black marble bathroom. There were big, fluffy black towels and a deep, clawed tub, which I loved. One entire wall was a three way mirror, and this room too was equipped with a crystal chandelier. There were an assortment of soaps, shampoos, and lotions on the counter. I decided I’d give them a better look after I unpacked.
I returned to my room and opened my suitcase, and with a flick of my wand all my clothes were tucked neatly into the dresser and the suitcase was stowed under the bed. I yawned and flopped down on the bed, which turned out to be the softest thing I had ever felt. I was asleep in no time, too stressed from my experience with the floo network to care that it wasn’t even past lunch time.
When I woke, the room was bright with the sunrise of the next day. I blinked against the brightness and yawned as I stretched. I had just gotten up and began to make my bed when a female house elf entered. She nearly dropped the linens she was carrying at the sight of me making the bed.
“Oh no Mistress! You must not do Mizzy’s job for Mizzy!”
She hastily put the linens down and shooed me away.
“Shoo! Mizzy will do the work while the mistress enjoys her breakfast. The master awaits you directly downstairs and to the left.”
I thanked her and changed my clothes with a flick of my wand, and went downstairs in a red and black plaid miniskirt with a band t-shirt, black and white striped tights, and combat boots. Snape looked up curiously as I entered and seemed taken aback by my attire. I grinned and greeted him as I sat at his left. He greeted me a bit awkwardly, then couldn’t help but laugh.
“What?”
“Plaid and...stripes, Miss Youngblood? I was unaware that those were able to be mixed.”
“Well, I can mix elephants and polka dots if I want, as long as I can make it look good. In fashion professor, it is not that mixing patterns is taboo, it is mixing patterns badly.”
We laughed and breakfast was served. I loaded my plate with pancakes, drowning them in syrup. When I had finished them I washed the lot down with milk, and sat in comfortable silence to wait for Snape to finish.
Shortly thereafter, he led me to the parlor, where we had one of our more intense Occlumency and Ligilimency sessions. When he finally decided to end it around lunch time, we were both sweating and had immense headaches, although Snape held his usual composure with ease. He handed me a potion for my pounding head and we went our separate ways to freshen up before lunch.

A few days came and went with the same routine, and Snape and I learned more and more about each others lives from the glimpses of memories we saw in each others’ minds during lessons. By the time Christmas morning had come around, we were more like equals than professor and student. After breakfast we were relaxing in two overstuffed armchairs in front of a roaring fire in the parlor, Snape sipping fire whiskey while I held a mug of hot chocolate. I glanced over as he set his glass down and reached down beside his chair. He sat back up and handed me a small box wrapped in silver paper tied off with a green bow.
“What’s this professor?”
He looked at me like I’d slightly lost my marbles. Annoying, but he made it look good. Just like his black turtleneck sweater and, surprisingly, a pair of blue jeans, made him look real good. I snapped my mind back to focus as he said,
“Doesn’t telling you what it is defeat the entire purpose for wrapping it, Miss Youngblood?”
I rolled my eyes.
“Well duh, but I wasn’t really expecting anything. I got something for you, but I left it up in my room.”
I hurried to grab the book I’d gotten for him, thankful I’d remembered to wrap it last night. He looked slightly irritated when I came back, but his expression turned curious as I handed him a dark green package with a silver bow. I picked up his gift to me and sat back down in my chair. He motioned for me to go first, and I thought I saw a gleam of excitement in his eyes as he watched with a barely noticeable smile. I grinned at him and tore into the paper. He rolled his eyes and sighed at my exuberance, but I ignored him as I opened the white box.
“Oh!”
Inside was a silver oval locket, with delicate filigree detail. I carefully took it out and examined it, noticing the filigree was several interwoven snakes. I grinned and looked up at him, noticing he was barely containing a smile.
“It’s gorgeous Professor Snape!”
“Call me Severus as long as we are not in class or in the hallways. I highly doubt it would be deemed inappropriate, we are nearly equals in terms of power and skill. Would you like some assistance with the latch?”
At my nod, he rose from his seat and took the locket from me, undoing the latch and draping it around my neck. He moved my hair over one shoulder and fastened it. I hoped he didn’t notice my slight shiver when his fingers brushed the back of my neck by accident…

Did she just shiver? She must be cold, but it’s warm in here to me… unless… no, she couldn’t be. I’m just a stupid old man for even thinking that.
I quickly latched the chain and returned to my chair. I picked up her gift and glanced over to see her grinning, eager to see me open it. I smirked and deliberately opened the package as slowly as I could to irk her, making sure no part of the wrapper was damaged. She huffed and rolled her eyes.
“Could you possibly open that any slower?”
I laughed and said,
“Yes, but I’m a bit too curious to try. I can’t imagine what you would have gotten for a grouchy old professor like me.”
She laughed as I finished taking off the wrapper and opened the box. My jaw dropped as my eyes fell on the title of one of the most coveted titles of my profession, Moste Potente Potions of the World, a limited edition continuation of the classic Moste Potente. This book contained every potion known to man past and present, and there were only 50 copies made.
“Do you like it Severus?”
I looked up at her with an awed expression.
“Like it, I love it Miss Youngblood. How in the world did you get a copy of this? I’ve been searching for one for the last three years!”
She grinned, her beautiful blue eyes alight, and said,
“I have my ways… you will never know.”
