Chapter 5 - Fuel For The Flames
“Feed the fire, watch it grow
watch it consume everything in sight
feed the anger, feel the burn
watch it consume you until you are gone”
Grr...curse Malfoy! If he tries anything like that bloody friend of his I’ll...
“um...Harry?”
I looked over to the girl who I’d ended up partnered with.
“What is it Asheley?”
“Are you okay?”
I sighed, and tried to concentrate.
“Yes, I’m fine. Just a little irritated right now.”
“I’m sorry, was it something I did?”
“No, it’s not you I’m upset with.”
I looked back over to where Malfoy was standing with Shadow.
Great, the last thing I need is for Shadow to get friendly with Malfoy. He’ll only corrupt her or something.
I growled again as I saw him flirting with her.
That does it! I’m gonna put a stop to this crap.
“I’ll be right back Asheley.”
I walked as casually as I could, given my current state of mind, over to where Draco was still flirting with Shadow.
He’s got to be up to something. He hates Gryffindors, especially my friends.

I exchanged schedules with Draco, and it turned out they matched perfectly, with one exception.
“Cool, we’re in all the same classes except one. What’s your career gonna be?”
“An Auror.”
“Hey, that’s neat. Harry’s gonna be an Auror too.”
I noticed Draco look over my shoulder and scowl, muttering
“Speak of the devil...”
I looked over my shoulder to see Harry approaching with a face like thunder.
Uh oh...trouble’s brewing.
Attempting to forestall disaster, I spoke before they could start flinging insults at each other.
“Hey Harry. How’s it going?”
He kept his gaze locked on Draco while he answered me, as if locking on a target.
“Not bad. You?”
“Pretty good. Draco’s kept me amused.”
He looked at me sharply.
“You’re on a first name basis with Malfoy?”
I arched a brow and slightly narrowed my eyes, daring him to dispute the matter.
“Yes, you got a problem with that?”
He ignored me and glared at Draco again.
“What kind of poison have you been feeding her Malfoy?”
Draco narrowed his eyes, spitting his reply like venom
“If you’ve got a problem Potter, we can settle it here and now.”
Both boys drew their wands as harry gritted through clenched teeth.
“Gladly.”
I stepped between them and drew my own wand in a final attempt to avoid the oncoming conflict.
“Hold it guys, there’s no sense in getting yourselves in trouble the first day of classes. If you’re gonna fight you’ll have to get through me, and I’ll guarantee that’s no easy task.”
Draco reluctantly sheathed his wand.
“Well Potter started it, and I certainly didn’t provoke him.” Harry only growled.
“Malfoy...”
“Harry!”
My sharp tone caught his attention almost immediately.
“Draco’s right, you started this, not him. Now I’m finishing it, so put your wand away.”
“But-”
“Harry...”
he must’ve realized from the growl in my voice that I meant business, because he finally put his wand away. I slowly lowered my wand, and tried to talk to Harry.
“Now what’s this all about Harry?”
“Yes Potter, what’s wrong? Have your scar pains finally snapped your mind?”
I looked incredulously at Draco. The sneer on his face matched perfectly with everything Harry had told me about him. I was about to give him a piece of my mind when Harry beat me to it.
“Can it Malfoy!”
“And why should I Potter?”
I sighed and stood back, letting fate take it’s course since their wands weren’t drawn. Harry’s voice growled dangerously low.
“Because the son of a death eater has no room to talk.”
Something in Draco snapped, and I could have sworn I saw a red tinge to his eyes.
“My father was the death eater Potter, not me.”
“Funny way you had of showing it, boasting about it like you couldn’t wait to receive the dark mark yourself.”
Before Draco could answer, Hagrid called over.
“A’right Harry?”
Harry looked over and nodded.
“Alright Hagrid.”
when Harry turned back around, I stood between him and Draco again.
“I think you need to get back to your partner Harry.”
He started to protest, but I cut him off.
“I’ll talk to you later, now go.”
He shot Draco another withering look and left. I turned back around to Draco. He still looked furious, and I really couldn’t blame him.
“You okay Draco?”
“Yeah, I’m fine.”
“You wanna talk about it?”
He gave me a look that clearly said ‘are you kidding?’ I smiled, and laid a hand on his shoulder.
“I’m serious.”
He sighed, and gave in.
“What nobody seems to understand is that before my parents were sent to Azkaban, I had to act like I was proud of them, proud of Voldemort. The truth is, I despised him, and despised them. Nobody believes me when I tell them I was never one of Voldemort’s supporters.”
He paused, and looked at me as if he was waiting for something. I scrutinized his face for a bit, then said
“I believe you.”
He looked stunned.
“You do?”
I nodded.
“Why?”
I shrugged.
“Maybe I’ll tell you sometime. Until then, could you please try to avoid any conflicts with Harry? He’s my friend too.”
“He’s the one who jumped on me!”
“I know, and I’ll talk to him.”
Class ended then, and everyone gathered up their things.
Draco sighed, then his smirk reappeared.
“I don’t suppose you’d like to let me escort you to Transfiguration?”
I laughed, shaking my head.
“Sorry, I’ve got to decline that offer. Harry and I both have to deposit our animals in the tower, and it would be a good opportunity to talk to him.”
I turned and started to walk over to where Harry was waiting for me, then I stopped and said over my shoulder
“Besides, we don’t want people to start thinking of us as a couple now, do we?”
I winked and continued on my way, trying not to laugh at the expression on Draco’s face.
