A/N: Thanks for the wonderful reviews! This here is a small one, but I hope you guys enjoy reading it nonetheless.
Turning Colors
I had completely forgotten about the fifth-year Slytherins. Even though it has only been three days, it feels as though weeks have passed since the two boys were up in my office. Potter has been up to complain about having them in detention, but he knows there’s nothing really he can do about it. I am his boss after all. Other than that, it really had slipped my mind.
The thing which happened in the labs that Sunday had overshadowed the rest of the day. After a few hours of staring at the flames of the fire, nursing a glass or five of my finest scotch, I had come to the conclusion that it had just been too long since I had been with a woman, that my body had reacted not to her, but to the simple fact that she is female. Nothing else. Denial is a wonderful thing.
The potions we brewed turned out perfectly, both of them, and Granger has bottled them up and frozen them, like I told her to do. Because the concoction has to stay frozen for a month, and then kept boiling for another week, we haven’t really spoken about anything in the last few days. I made a point of not showing up for breakfast and lunch, and since she’s been avoiding dinner, we’ve barely even seen each other. I can’t say I missed her presence very much.
Tonight is the first night this week she has shown up for dinner, probably mostly because she has to settle some dispute over the Quidditch pitch with Zabini, Sybil’s replacement, and Slytherin head of house. They have been arguing all week according to several other faculty members, and were bickering across the table when I came in ten minutes ago.
“But he’s got practice scheduled every freaking day, and Wednesday is our night. The try-outs for the Gryffindor team were last weekend, and tonight is the first night they can practice together.”
Granger is fuming, I’m almost afraid she’ll start foaming at the mouth soon. It’s actually quite funny to see. I glance at Zabini, who has taken the chair on my left. Good thinking, if she lashes out, I’ll be his human shield. The young man is calmly eating his food, not correcting her, not stating his own case, just letting me decide. When he meets my eyes, he shrugs. That shrug can mean two things, either women or Gryffindors. I believe either one would be accurate. I turn back at Granger, who is still ranting. One of my looks silences her.
“It’s his time, Professor Granger. Next time, I suggest you plan ahead.”
I don’t believe I could’ve said anything which would make her angrier. I catch Remus’ eye, and he shakes his head at me, though I can see the humor in his eyes.
Granger huffs, and pushes her chair back fast enough to let it clatter to the ground. From the corner of my eye I can see the Gryffindor Quidditch team start to rise out of their seats. They know they’ve lost. One look from Remus has them back in their seats. Good, one less problem to worry about.
Hermione whirls on me, one finger pointed at my nose. I look back at her calmly. With all the commotion up at our table, no one seems to notice the two boys at the Slytherin table starting to laugh. What I do notice is the color of her robes. The black sleeve, which is quite close to my face, is turning a lovely shade of green, starting at her shoulder. Behind me, I feel Zabini stiffen, trying not to laugh probably, and behind her, Potter has gone white as a sheet, while Remus is scanning the students for the culprits.
Just as she opens her mouth to say something, the green creeps up to her cuffs, the usually black embroidering on her cuffs turning silver. She shuts her mouth, looking puzzled. She raises her other hand and inspects her sleeve. I have to fight to keep the smile off my face, but I’m losing. It would be absolute suicide to start laughing now. Thankfully the Slytherins beat me to it.
A roar of laughter rises from the tables, and the witch still looming over me turns scarlet. I just can’t keep my mouth shut.
“I am happy you have finally embraced our colors, Professor. The green looks absolutely lovely on you.”
Behind my back, I hear Zabini choke down a laugh, and I can almost imagine him turning purple trying to hold it in. I flash the young woman the most sincere looking smile I can manage. Last straws and all that.
Her hand twitches over her pocket, and I know I’m very close to being hexed. I am suddenly very happy to be in a packed great hall, otherwise I am sure I would’ve been dead by now.
She lets out a frustrated groan, and stalks off towards the entrance hall, stomping past the tables as though the floor itself has offended her. When the doors slam shut behind her, the hall erupts in a deafening roar of noise. Potter springs up and runs out of the hall through the side door, but the rest of the faculty stay seated, either shocked, or secretly amused. Zabini is laughing out loud, and I seem unable to wipe the smile of my face.
I lean over to the head of Slytherin house, and lower my voice so only he can hear me.
“Twenty points to Slytherin for saving the headmaster’s arse.”
Zabini laughs even harder, and so do I. Only Remus notices the emeralds falling into place, giving the Slytherins the lead.
