The Pride of Hogwarts
Chapter 5: The Aftermath.
Harry, Alex, Ron, and Draco, with a tag-along Hermione, had just made it to the ever-changing stairs, while heading up towards Dumbledore’s office, when they met the same said man, coming down off the last landing, where he paused when he saw them. “Ah, I was just coming to find you, so please follow me up to my office, chop, chop”.
The five students quickly glanced at each other, and followed the Headmaster’s orders. As they started their climb, Ron quietly muttered, “Why does the Headmaster’s office have to be all the way up here, huh? Why not be like a normal person, and have the bloody thing on the main floor?”
“Why, Mr. Weasley, exercise, of course”! Dumbledore replied, and popped a Lemon Drop in his mouth.
Ron scowled, but then was almost made sick, when he noticed that several of Dumbledore’s beard hairs had stuck to the candy, and followed it inside the Headmaster’s mouth, where he jovially sucked on the said sweet.
When they made it to the Gargoyle that guarded the Headmaster’s office, Alex quickly tugged on Harry’s sleeve, wanting him to slow up.
“Now, Harry, listen up. When we get inside, let me do the talking, okay? This takes a Slytherins intellect, or an ability to fluently speak half-truths. If everything comes out, we are liable to lose everything we’ve gained, or accomplished today”.
When Harry was about to reply that he could lie, and very well too, thank you very much, and that he was almost sorted into Slytherin, the Gargoyle moved out of their way, and the spiraling staircase had started to move.
“Come, children, follow me, we haven’t much time”. Dumbledore said, as he took the lead by stepping onto the stairs, and allowing them to screw him up the round caseway to the landing at his door. Something made the Headmaster think of his old friend, Elphias Doge, at this screwing motion.
When Dumbledore opened the large oak door guarding his office, he used his wand to conjure five stuffy, but very gaudy, Chinch chairs in front of his desk. Not a one matched in style, nor colour either, and at this, Draco sniffed, but grabbed the best one for himself.
After all five students had been seated, and Dumbledore sat down in his large, golden, throne-like chair, behind his desk, he looked over the said students with concern. “Now then, if I may enquire, what happened to Dolores”?
When Hermione started to open her yap, Alex made a smooth and quick motion with his hand, which was dangling just off the armrest of his chair, and silenced the girl before she could spill the beans. He then stood up before the Headmaster, crossed his arms behind his back, and gave the old man a solemn look.
“Headmaster Dumbledore”, Alex intoned, “when I asked the, as of now, defunct Professor Umbridge, why we weren’t using wands in class, she blew me off, and at this, my dear friend, Harry here, took it upon himself to explain why.
“Well, sir, at this, Mrs. Umbridge took exception, becoming rather vile towards the said student, and this then caused Harry to get rather upset, and a shouting match erupted between the two.
“I guess, sir, that she didn’t like what Harry said, even though I think Harry hit spot on to be honest, in his opinion, and mine, and this is where she drew her wand, and tried to cast the Cruciatus curse upon Harry.
“She didn’t”! Minerva McGonagall asked, as she just walked into the office, and even the Headmaster looked stunned.
“Yes, she did, in fact, try to do just that. However, I, being the heir of both Gryffindor, and Slytherin, called upon the blood wards of this school to stop her, where I then terminated her employment here, and then expelled her from this school, while raising the wards against her type being allowed inside the school, or the grounds, for quite some time, I imagine.
“You did WHAT Mr. Mattingly”? McGonagall screeched, and Dumbledore pinched the bridge of his nose, almost knocking off his half-moon spectacles. “Oh, the Ministry will not be pleased, and Minister Fudge, Albus, what will we do”?
“Is this what happened, Messrs. Potter, Weasley, Malfoy, and Mrs. Granger”? Dumbledore asked.
All the boys nodded with a yes, and Hermione tried to argue, again, but from their glare, she humbly nodded her agreement too.
“Mr. Malfoy, I did not, quite frankly, think that I would see you here, so can you explain what it that you saw”? Dumbledore enquired, with some interest.
At this, Alex sat down, and Draco stood up before the aged Headmaster, in the same way that the young Mattingly had done beforehand.
“Yes, Headmaster, it was exactly as Alex said, and quite frankly, I am glad she is gone for good”. Draco drawled. “Now, if you can find us another professor, whom will actually teach us something useful, then we might actually learn something this term”.
Ron started to turn red at this, and Hermione actually leapt to her feet, but still couldn’t talk, and after seeing both Harry, and Alex, give them the glare-of-death, they both quickly composed themselves.
“Mr. Malfoy”! McGonagall scolded.
“That’s quite all right, Minerva; I quite asked for that, as I did allow her to teach at this school. Now, Mr. Malfoy, you can be seated.
“However, there are reasons I had to hire her, and it is all political, you see. The Ministry of Magic is out to ‘get’ Mr. Potter, and myself, for telling everyone about Voldemort’s return. They would like to see Harry expelled, and me fired, thinking that that would shut us up, which, quite frankly, is far from ever being contemplated.
“They are afraid of a legal battle from the Diggroys, since I tried to tell Fudge about Voldemort’s impending return before poor Cedric died. The Ministry went ahead with the tournament, even though they were warned, and I think the ones who allowed the tournament to continue, were influenced by a few of Voldemort’s followers.
“Plus, if the population knew for a fact that Voldemort was alive and well, and residing here in Britain, they would demand immediate action, tying up any available Auror’s, and cost the Ministry a lot of galleons, that some, unfortunately, want to squirrel away into their own pockets”.
At Hermione’s look of indignant outrage, Dumbledore held up his hand to silence her protest, not knowing that she was already silenced, and quite well at that.
“Yes. Mrs. Granger, British wizarding politics are some of the most corrupt, I am afraid to say, in the world”. Dumbledore explained. “Now, young Alex, please explain to me about these blood wards, before we have some unwelcome visitors come upon us”.
“Oh, well, my father will be here shortly too, and maybe flooing in, I’m not too sure”. Alex replied. “The blood wards that I enacted were made by the founders themselves, and as you may have guessed, by using blood rituals, and placing the wards into the very foundation of this school, using every cornerstone, and keystone. There are also several boundary stones outside, which hold the outer wards, done in the same manner, as well as the gates and the walls attached to them.
“Of the wards available, I can only call upon two of them, and those are the most viscous, and were placed by Godric Gryffindor, and Salazar Slytherin. That, sir, is what I enacted”.
“How extraordinary, Mr. Mattingly”. Dumbledore enthused. “Now then, how do you drop these wards”?
“Well, sir, I can’t drop them, they are the wards”. Alex replied.
"Well, that’s preposterous, boy, you have to be able to drop them”! Minerva sarcastically replied.
“No mam, I can not drop them”. ‘Not now’, Alex thought. “This school is semi-sentient, and the wards will not drop, unless the magical bonds feel that there is no more ill intent made towards it, as a whole”. At several gasps, Alex continued. “The wards will not allow anyone to pass that they sense has any ill intent toward a student, an employee, or any other being, residing within. In theory, one could say, that this school is now on a lock down. However, if any student, or employee, or any other being, wishes harm toward another inside, the wards will effectively remove them, as they did with Umbridge”.
At this, McGonagall had to quickly sit down, and began fanning herself. Dumbledore, himself, was slightly worried, as this could curtail some of his plans for Harry, and he also worried about Severus Snape being allowed to teach. Yes, Dumbledore would have to walk a very narrow, and thin, line, if he wished to carry on the way he had been. Plus, he was going to have to have a very serious talk with Professor Snape.
Just as Dumbledore had been contemplating all this, there was a knock upon his door, and all in the room turned to see who was interrupting their meeting.
“Father”! Alex exclaimed, and stood to greet the forty-something looking wizard, Lord William Alexander Mattingly, Baron of Hampshire. “I take it that you got my message”?
“Why yes, Alexander, I did. So, the Umbridge woman tried to use an unforgivable on a student of this school”? Lord Mattingly enquired.
“Yea she did, and on Harry Potter to boot! They got into an argument about You-Know-Who being back, and she tried to use the Cruciatus curse on him”. Alex replied, and pointed toward Harry.
“Ah, the young Mr. Potter, how nice to meet you”! Lord Mattingly jovially said, as he held out his hand to shake Harry’s. After the quick handshake, he grinned fondly at Draco, and gave him a small pat on the back. “Why hello, Draco, it’s good to see you too”!
“These are two other friends of mine, Dad, Mr. Ronald Weasley, and Mrs. Hermione Granger”. Alex said, and motioned to the sour-looking girl, and the redhead sitting in the other two chairs.
After Lord Mattingly nodded at the other two students, he gave his son a level stare. “Now, son, what did you do with the wards”?
“Well, Dad, when she tried to curse Harry, I had the school to disarm her, stifle her, and gave her the boot, just like any good heir would have done”. Alex joyfully explained. “Then, I raised the blood wards, and just explained to the Headmaster that I did not know when they might be lowered, as it all depended upon the magic of this school”.
At this, Lord Mattingly had to palm his face, and think over what Alex had just said. He had obviously misled the Headmaster, and Deputy Headmistress about the wards, as Alex could lower them anytime he wanted, so something was up that his son thought they shouldn’t be told the truth, and that he didn’t trust either of them. “I see. Well, Headmaster, I am sure that Alex explained how the school was set up to work this way”?
“Oh yes, he did, and I was quite caught unawares, to be totally honest”. Dumbledore replied, and four of the students, along with McGonagall, looked shocked at this statement. “I knew there was ancient magic tied to this school, and I had heard that only the heirs could command it, but to be honest, I thought that that knowledge had been lost centuries ago, but now I see that it was not”.
“Well, of course it wasn’t you bumbling old fool, it just left the country”! A sneering voice said, from what sounded like the top of a shelf to the left. “That knowledge left with the families, when they started to flee this isle several hundred years ago, over what was happening with the muggle witch hunts, and the churches”. The sorting Hat explained. “Now, half of the family has come home, and hopefully, the rest will too, one day. Well, you still have the Smith’s here, but thats not saying much, now is it”! The hat laughed.
“Why, I never, and what gives you the right to say anything, you’re just an old sorting hat”! McGonagall complained.
“I, Minerva McGonagall, am the voice of this school! After all, it does need a mouth to speak, does it not”? The hat said, and gave a crude look at the Deputy Headmistress. “What, you thought that I was just an old hat? I am the voice, and this school is the body, that’s just the way it is!
“Now, I will share some knowledge that nobody has ever thought to ask of me, after all the while that I’ve spoken. My maker, Godric Gryffindor, was a horse’s arse, a know-it-all, an I’m-never-wrong prick, and a liar”! The hat exclaimed, and everyone was stunned and scandalized. “What he did to poor old Salazar Slytherin’s reputation, it was terrible and unforgivable. That’s why he left the school, you know, but oh no, Godric Gryffindor had to be right, and got a bunch of people killed by trusting all those muggles, and the Catholic Churches people, of that time.
“Oh, there were some decent enough muggles around Godric’s Hollow, and a few other places that the Church hadn’t really reached yet, and they were content to live with the magic folk. The people the church sent forward, though, lied to Godric, and had him believing that we could all live as one, when the Pope had already made plans of genocide against anyone magical.
“Salazar Slytherin, though, being the sly man that he was, sent forward spies into the church, and even went himself, to investigate what was happening. He found out about the Pope’s plan, which later on, came to be known as the Inquisition.
“When Slytherin tried to tell Godric what he had found, Godric blew up, saying Salazar was insane, and couldn’t be believed, as he knew everything; yes, he thought he was all-knowing, and was never wrong, you see. However, Salazar was well versed in Legilimency, and had retrieved the truth from every Priest, Bishop, and Monk, he came across. He knew exactly what they were planning.
“Salazar knew, then, that he had lost his best friend, and knew that he would have to protect this great school, and every single wizard, warlock, witch, magical child, and beast, that this isle held, so he started adding to the dungeons, way underneath, where Godric and Helga Hufflepuff would be none the wiser. Here, Salazar Slytherin created the Chamber of Secrets before he left the school, and headed back to the fens. He did inform Rowena Ravenclaw of his secrets, though, and she was said to be able to control the chamber. It was said that he had taught her enough Parseltongue to open the chamber, and direct what was held there.
“Inside the chamber, he placed a great Basilisk, who was made dormant with magic, and would come to life when the muggles, who he knew would be led by the church, would lay siege to this castle. Yes, when they came, the giant reptile would come from its nest, out and through the Forbidden Forest, and kill the lot of them, while outside the wards, and using just its stare, turning them all to stone.
“The exit, that young Tom Riddle found, inside the third floor girls privy, was only meant to be used in case the muggles gained access to the castle. How the young man found this, I have no clue, unless he found something hidden away by his mother’s family.
“Mr. Potter, here, figured it out by what happened during his second year, and luckily, was able to open the chamber, and save the young Mrs. Weasley. However, he had to kill the Basilisk to keep the school safe from the beast, since he, and Tom Riddle, was all that were left, in Britain, who could control it.
“Salazar Slytherin died of old age, with the Inquisition just starting, while still at the fens, and Godric Gryffindor died, with a sword in hand, fighting a muggle mob, whom had attacked a wizarding settlement just outside Glasgow. Yes, Godric got the glory, and his family spread the tale that Slytherin was a lunatic, and that we should trust all muggles, and embrace them. Salazar Slytherin never did say one thing about muggle-borns, only muggles.
“That, My children, is the truth, whether it is hard to swallow, or not”! The hat growled out, and became still again.
At this, Lord Mattingly, silently nodded his head in agreement, and so did his son, who knew the truth. They had the history, which was carefully transcribed all those years ago, still safe, and stored inside their huge library, back in the states.
“Father”! Alex exclaimed. “Someone’s at the front gate, and I don’t think they’re too friendly”!

The history between Slytherin and Gryffindor is my own opinion, by using real history, and knowing what the books, along with JKR, has said on the subject.
