Lily seemed completely oblivious to the tension that passed between Anthea and Severus on the ride to Hogsmeade, but it didn't escape the eyes of James. He looked between Anthea and Severus's red faces and their apparent attempt at trying to not touch. Anthea's eyes were wide as she stared out the window, listening to Lily go on about how they really ought to all meet up for a butterbeer before they had to leave, but how she and James had their own things to do and wouldn't want to intrude on anything. Her obvious hinting only furthered Anthea's embarrassment. Severus's shock confirmed she wasn't the only one who felt the jolt when his hand touched hers to help her into the carriage, but his reaction was discouraging. Anthea had only wanted to be friends, but any hope of being something more was crushed by his bewilderment.
Severus was embarrassed, but also confused. Lily's talking wasn't anything new, and the embarrassment of it was only renewed by the presence of Anthea. Why was Lily so intent on forcing them together? She knew that he loved only her. But that jolt was hard to ignore, and held his mind captive. What had it meant? Severus was inexperienced with women, but he couldn't deny Anthea made him want to fix that. The thought was startling. Even before they started at Hogwarts, Severus loved Lily, and it had grown romantic as they grew older. While never stated, she seemed to acknowledge that his feelings existed but expressed no intent on returning them. He sighed internally. He refused to admit she wouldn't eventually leave that bully Potter and see that he was the sensible choice.
Lily, done with hinting with her words, caught on to the clear distance between Anthea and Severus. Unconsciously, she took James's hand and scooted slightly closer. She didn't understand why her plan wasn't working: she was a bright witch, and academically was one of the top of her class. But socially, she lacked the finesse needed to be a good matchmaker. Relationships couldn't be forced, but she wanted direly for Severus to get over her and move on. She hated seeing the small heartache in his eyes when he saw her and James, and wanted him to be happy as she was.
With a coy smile, she subtlely pointed her wand at Anthea and whispered a spell, and did the same to Severus. James heard her muttering, and looked at Lily with a raised brow. He didn't like Severus, especially the closeness he once shared with Lily, but he really didn't like Lily trying to stick her nose in the business of others. But, it was none of his business.
The carriage stopped, and Lily slid out with a giggle, closely followed by James. Severus raised a brow, but was glad to be able to leave the close confines of the carriage. Anthea stepped down after him, careful to avoid looking like she needed any help. Lily frowned. She had seen Severus offer his hand to help her into the carriage, and she had counted on him helping her out. James smiled as he saw Lily's plan fail.
"Well, see you two later!" Lily said, and grabbed James as she ran off before Severus or Anthea could try to tag along. Severus and Anthea just stared after the two as they fled, before looking at each other and blushing.
"Uhm, would you mind accompanying me to Tomes and Scrolls? I was wanting to pick up a new book," Anthea asked, eager to end the awkward silence that had been between them. Severus agreed, and the two started for the main road of the village.
The carriage they had taken was one of the last to arrive, and the road was already filled with a throng of students. Without thinking, Anthea took Severus's hand to avoid losing each other in the crowd. The jolt hit them both again, making their hearts skip and sending a heated chill down their spines. Anthea turned red and glanced at Severus as she led the way. His blush was less pronounced than hers, but he felt the touch at the same force. She continued holding his hand as they wove through the other students. The touch made her skin tingle, and her heart race. Soon, she entered the book shop and tried to let go of Severus's hand, but found she couldn't. Severus looked at her dumbfounded face with confusion. Her hand was open, only her palm touched his, but she couldn't remove her hand from his.
Severus tried to move his hand, too, but it only pulled Anthea closer as he pulled his arm back. He quickly stopped. He knew magic was involved and was afraid of what would happen if they touched anywhere else.
"We need to find Lily. She's behind this," he stated, and Anthea nodded. Why couldn't Lily just leave them alone! But, it was nice to touch him, she had to admit.
The two quickly left the store and began checking the shops lining the side of the road they were on, but Lily wasn't in any of them. She wasn't in any shop on the other, which started to make Severus suspicious. Occasionally, he thought he saw a flash of red hair, but it would disappear quickly. He knew she was hiding on purpose, but was unsure of how to accept it. Many had already noticed the hand holding, and mumbled rumors were starting. Severus wasn't exactly well known, but his friendship with Lily Evans was.
After checking every store twice, Anthea finally tugged on Severus's hand, causing him to pause.
"She's hiding from us. Since we can't find Lily... could we just go ahead and go about our business? We were supposed to meet for butterbeers later, we can catch her then," she reasoned, looking pleadingly at Severus. She didn't want to tell him how much she was enjoying their hand holding, and wanted it to last as long as it could. Severus smiled lightly. He enjoyed it too. He'd never reacted so physically strongly to anyone, and appreciated the feeling. He nodded his acceptance and let Anthea lead the way.
