Count Your Blessings
<><>{Chapter Five: My Hero}<><>
Hermione and Benny were spending their Friday morning outside on the Hogwarts grounds. She had brought a blanket, some of Benny’s toys and one of the more advanced potion texts she had borrowed from Severus earlier that morning.
She had to admit that having access to some of Severus’ more rare texts was going to be one of the best parts about working under him. Well, that and her crush seemed to be back in full force, although that was probably not for the best considering their need for a work relationship. She couldn’t tell if her overactive imagination was to blame but she could have sworn Severus was flirting with her earlier.
Her apprenticeships weren’t scheduled to start until Monday but she had spent most of her free week inspecting the new texts she had at her disposal both in the lab and in Flitwick’s office.
She had been eyeing one particularly old book for two days before Severus finally said something, “That book is meant to be read, not gawked at.” He stated from his place, now right behind the young woman. She jumped in fright and turned around to face him, clutching her chest.
“Don’t do that!” she shrieked still trying to catch her breath which prompted an eyebrow being raised from her mentor.
“Do what?” He inquired innocently, knowing full well what she was talking about.
“Sneak up on me and startle me.” She responded watching the man smirk in triumph. He reached over her shoulder and procured the book in question holding it out in front of her. “Take it.” He prompted not apologizing for frightening her earlier.
She eyed the man wearily and took the book, running her hands over the cover before opening it. “A gentleman would apologize for scaring a lady, not try to buy her off with rare texts.” She muttered looking through the table of contents. She felt his hand lay over hers forcing the cover closed and her skin to tingle. She looked up to see him intensely staring at her with his hand still covering hers.
“I never apologize for something I do on purpose and I am no gentleman, Hermione.” he had said causing her to blush again. They stood there awkwardly before she heard her son start to fuss from his crib, giving her an excuse to escape.
Hermione was distracted from her memory when she felt a tug on her arm and saw Benny trying to stand up. Instinctively she wanted to help him up, but she knew that he had to learn to do it himself, and he wasn’t asking for help anyways. She watched as he determinedly pulled himself up onto his knees and slowly got his legs underneath his body, coming to a stand.
He looked up at his mother and grinned, bouncing as she applauded his accomplishment. He then squirmed his way into her lap, with her help this time, and then reached out for his favorite stuffed dragon his Uncle Charlie had given him.
Once he was all settled in Hermione’s lap he looked up at her waiting for her to begin reading. She smiled at his expectant stare and started reciting chapter one aloud. It wasn’t like her young son could even fathom what she was saying, he had just grown accustom to her reading aloud and the sounds comforted him.
They sat there on the lawn for at least an hour. She was reading and he was playing quietly in her lap until she heard a tell-tale yawn come from her son indicating nap time. She packed up their things, carefully placing Severus’ book in her bag, and started back for the castle.
It was on the way to the castle that something caught her eye. A Red Cap was popping his head out of his little hidey hole. Normally she wouldn’t be bothered by a Red Cap because any simple charm or hex would scare them off, but her arms were currently full and her wand was hidden inside her robe pocket, completely out of reach because her son was pressed against her front.
As long as the Red Cap did not figure out she was basically defenseless they would be fine. She determinedly kept her pace and did not even glance at the creature. Red Caps loved to hang around old battlefields and Hogwarts staff was having a hard time keeping them off the grounds after all of the blood shed over the years.
She was trying to hear if the Red Cap was following her but the wind was making that impossible so the young witch risked a glance behind her and was glad she did. The Red Cap had assessed his prey’s situation and had decided that Hermione was a perfect target to work on his bludgeoning skills.
The three foot creature was right behind her, red eyes glinting and his long nails were reflecting sunlight causing her to squint. That was all the edge the little creature needed and it launched itself at the young witch and her son, his knobby club poised to strike.
Her heart was racing as she dropped her bag, which included Severus’ rare text, and ran as fast as she could toward the castle, clutching her boy in her arms. Their only hope now was making it to the castle before the creature reached them. Her son sensed her tension and heart rate increase and began to cry.
Hermione knew she only had minutes and soon she felt the knobby end of the creature’s club graze her calf. She stumbled and found herself facing the creature directly with a throbbing left calf. Hermione watched as the creature reared his club back again, warning her of another impending strike.
She tried to dodge the incoming blow but she was not quick enough and her right leg was struck full on with twice as much force. She swore she heard a cracking sound and hoped to Merlin that it wasn’t her leg.
It was becoming hard for her to stand, what was left of her right leg was protesting severely, her tendons were desperately clinging to her bones. She fiercely clutched her son to her chest and stared the little creature down in spite of the pain.
If only she had the time to get her wand out, but now even a wand wouldn’t help the witch. She was in so much pain she could barely concentrate on casting a proper spell. Hermione was becoming light headed from all the blood loss from her legs, causing her to lose her footing again.
The creature was poised to take advantage of her weakened state again when the young mother heard a deep baritone voice shout Expelliarmus. The Red Cap was knocked back and disarmed all at the same time; she watched, with blurring vision, as it scurried quickly back into his hidey hole, his red eyes glinting maliciously from its dark home.
The young witch fell to her knees still clutching her screaming son, trying her best to fight off the waves of pain shooting up her legs. She knew their rescuer must be close but she was still fighting the pain that was threatening to push her into the realm of the unconscious.
Hermione felt a pair of large, calloused hands on her shoulders and caught the, now familiar, scent of cedar and was finally able to relax. She knew that she and her son were safe now and slumped back against Severus’ chest looking up at him, smiling through her pain.
“Almost taken out by a Red Cap, how embarrassing.” She joked easily as she succumbed to her injuries and promptly passed out.
<><>{Chapter Five}<><>
When she awoke Hermione instantly recognized her surroundings just from one look at the ceiling, the Hospital Wing. She sat up abruptly and instantly regretted her actions. She was rewarded with a rush of dizziness and nausea that caused her to lay back down.
“Your son in fine, Hermione. Madam Pomfrey is watching him in her office as we speak.” She heard Severus call to her as he entered her sectioned off area. “You, however are the very opposite of fine.” She noticed he was holding two different potions.
“You saved us.” She blurted out and then quickly shut her mouth, a blush racing across her face. “I mean thank-you Severus.” She amended quickly.
“Well, thanks would not be needed if you would not walk around the grounds without your wand.” He replied reprimanding and handed her one of the potions. She knew from her previous exposure to the man that Severus did not take compliments well.
“I had it,” she replied indignantly. “It was just out of reach and in a pocket.” She amended which earned a pointed look from her mentor. “Okay, okay fine. I will keep it when I am out on the grounds from now on.” She conceded to his pointed look.
“This is a blood renewal potion; it will help restore your loss of blood.” He explained trying to change the subject. He helped move her slowly into a sitting position so that she could drink the potion.
“This is one of my personal brews. It is a regenerative potion that attaches to the damaged tissue’s cells and then regenerates the missing material. It is painless and fast acting however it does have some side-effects.”
“Side-effects… wait missing materials?” She questioned as she quickly pulled the blankets back to reveal her bandaged legs. She could tell that her right leg did not look right; it had an odd shape to it, like a piece was missing. Then she felt another wave of dizziness rush to her head.
“You should not make sudden movement till the blood replenishing potion has had a chance to work.” She heard through her dizzy spell and rolled her eyes and he called her a know-it-all.
“Okay, what are the side effects?” she inquired ignoring his last remark.
“The potion utilizes opiates as an ingredient and as such you will feel an extreme sense of well-being. An endorphin rush as it were. The potion also feeds off of your inherent Magic. As your Magic helps you heal your body, you will be expending a lot of energy and will be very sleepy until you are fully healed, which should be by Sunday afternoon.”
“Okay, then get Harry, he will watch Benny for me.” She said thinking of her son first. She held out her hand for the other vial. “I am ready to take the potion.”
“Well, Miss Know-it-all, this is not a potion to be administered orally.” He promptly sat down in the chair next to her bed and shook the vial three times watching as the potion turned a shimmering yellow. As he lifted the sheet to expose her leg more fully she put her hand down to stop him.
“I can do it myself.” She claimed stubbornly holding her hand out expectantly for the vial. She was already feeling embarrassed enough about the whole situation and she did not want to add “letting her mentor and crush feel her damaged leg up” to the growing list.
Hermione watched as Severus smirked at her and handed the vial over and then crossed his arms across his chest. She carefully took the edge of one of her bandages and started to remove it, assuming her legs would look a lot like Ron’s shoulder had when he had splinched; it was way worse than that.
Her wounds had stopped bleeding, but they were still open and exposed. The pink, sinewy flesh was glistening in the Hospital Wing’s harsh light and caused her stomach to turn. She quickly replaced the bandages and handed the vial back to Severus trying to control her stomach’s urge to expel its contents. She also had a sneaking feeling he was smirking at her again, so she refused to look at him.
The young witch felt the bandages being removed and cool liquid drip down onto her exposed flesh, bringing with it a strange tingling sensation which caused her to jerk her leg in reflex. Severus just took a second to glare at his patient before grabbing her leg gently, just above her knee, as he resumed his previous activities.
Suddenly a heavy feeling came over her whole body, while she felt a wave of endorphins rush through her brain. She closed her eyes as the potion’s side effects overcame her senses and when she opened them everything had a shimmery look to it.
No longer worrying about her wound, she took the time to look around with her new shimmery vision. The lights particularly took her interest and she spent a few minutes gazing up at them. She felt her leg gently being turned and she shifted her attention to Severus.
His long black tresses looked so inviting as they gently fanned his face. Before she knew what she was doing, she found her fingers running through his hair; it was so soft, not at all what she would have expected.
“Hermione!” She heard him chide in a stern voice but he did not move away from her touch. Being his student for years, she knew what his voice was warning her of but she liked to run her fingers through his hair. It felt nice, and that was all that mattered to her in her potion induced state, so she continued her hands motions letting her nails lightly scrape against his scalp.
“Severus,” she echoed teasingly and watched as his long lashes closed. She felt his grip on her thigh tighten and started to panic even though the potion was trying to calm her. His hand’s hold on her thigh was eerily similar to the one Lucius had used, but slowly he began to ease his grip, tracing small circles into the flesh just above her knee with his thumb.
Any previous panic that had set in was completely erased by his soothing motions and the potion currently coursing through her blood; her body was still tingling. She did not realize she had parted her legs until she felt Severus’ hand slide down and resume its circles on the inside of her lower thigh.
Hermione felt a sudden rush of pleasure pooling in her abdomen. Her body was still tingling from both the potion and his soothing movements and she felt her inner thighs become wet with arousal. It was the first time since her rape that she didn’t feel ashamed of being aroused. All the times before now just brought back horrible memories of that night, but this time she felt a dull ache deep between her legs and craved more of his touch. She felt like her whole body was on fire.
She let out a small sigh just as she caught his nostrils flare; his body instantly stiffened. To the young witch’s dismay, Severus withdrew his hand and moved away from her ministrations. She moaned in protest as he began to bandage her legs with fresh linen and replace the blanket, fully covering the young witch’s legs. He only paused for a moment when she called his name questioningly before succumbing to the warm, heavy, potion induced feeling that pulled her into sleep again.
<><>{Chapter Five}<><>
She awoke Saturday morning to the most delicious smell, breakfast. Her body still felt really heavy but she felt emotionally more like herself. She was careful not to stretch her legs too much, remembering how awful they had looked previously.
That’s when she remembered what had transpired between Severus and herself. Thinking about that moment caused her heart to beat faster. He didn’t move away, or push her arm away. Suddenly she became very embarrassed again.
She couldn’t believe how she had tried to take advantage of the situation, potion or not, it wasn’t fair to Severus, she reasoned. He shouldn’t have to suffer awkward moments because of her residual school-girl crush.
It was at that moment Harry walked into the Hospital Wing carrying her crying son and a tray of breakfast. “Benny, darling, why are you crying?” she asked him. At the sound of her voice he immediately stopped crying and turned his head towards her.
His little cheeks were red and stained with tears. He looked like he had been throwing a proper fit for a while now but as soon as he saw his mother he broke out into the biggest grin and did something very surprising.
“Mama mama mama!” he cried reaching out towards her causing Harry to almost lose his grip on his godson both from the movements and at the surprise of the now vocal boy. Harry looked at him in shock and then looked over at Hermione.
“Did you hear that?” he questioned looking back at his godson.
Hermione just nodded her head flabbergasted. “Mama mama!” he cried again as he finally reached his mother’s waiting arms. She clutched him to her chest and inhaled his sweet, clean scent.
“Wow!” Harry cried out. “I have the cleverest godson! Talking at 8 months! Teddy didn’t start talking till he was at least a year!”
“He never even babbles, that is what all the books say comes first.” Hermione replied marveling at her clever boy.
She pulled him out of the hug and looked him in the eyes. “What else can you do that you haven’t told me about?” she questioned the boy jokingly. He looked right back at her and gave her a smirk identical to the one that haunted her nightmares.
‘Just like his father… and brother…’ her thought was interrupted by her loudly, growling stomach.
“Ah, that reminds me,” Harry stated as he pulled the lid off the tray that he was holding to reveal a Molly Weasley breakfast for three.
After breakfast Harry and Hermione took turns trying to coax more or even the same word out of Benny but he just grinned back at them and clapped his little hands, refusing to utter a syllable. By mid-morning Benny was yawning and Hermione’s legs were starting to ache; her body no longer felt the least bit heavy. She knew the potion had completely left her system.
As if on cue, Madam Pomfrey came in holding another vial of Severus’ potion. “Time for your second dose, I’m afraid it will knock you out again though.” She said shaking the vial three times as Hermione clutched her son to her chest and shook her head.
“Just a bit longer?” she questioned not wanting to spend another night away from her son, but she knew it was inevitable. Madam Pomfrey smiled at them and shook her head.
“Headmaster Snape was very specific about when to give you the next dose. It has to be now.” She was not a woman to let a patient’s emotions get in the way of their health.
Hermione looked her son in the eyes and proceeded to say her good byes while she was still in her right mind. “Benny, Darling, you need to be on your best behavior for Harry. Mummy needs to stay here and get better.” She kissed him on both cheeks and then once on the nose, then she gave him back to Harry.
“I’ll come and get you tomorrow Darling, and we will have dinner with the Weasleys.” She told her son, as he started to whine and reach out for his mother. Harry stood and threw her son up on his shoulder, something that normally would make Benny laugh.
“See you tomorrow Hermione.” Harry said giving her a half hug with his free arm.
“Bye Harry! Bye Benny!” she waved at her son as he started to cry. She wanted to reassure him so she smiled as she watched him be carried away, even though it was heartbreaking to watch her son cry like that.
Right before Hermione fell into another potion induced sleep she managed to ask Madam Pomfrey to find her abandoned bag and then promptly passed out.
<><>{Chapter Five}<><>
Severus was spending his Sunday in his office getting ready for the student’s arrival the next day. For the last fifteen minutes he had been distracted from his work by thoughts of his young apprentice. She had been pacing in front of his office door and Severus was wishing she would just go away. He watched as the shadow under the door moved restlessly back and forth.
No doubt she was rehearsing exactly how she was going to tell him off, he thought.
Severus had decided that the best plan of action concerning his apprentice would be subtle flirting but no actual intent to go further. He was not a nice man and she deserved better than a surly bastard like him.
He decided to scare the girl away by verbally reprimanding her; the problem was she had called his bluff by not stopping her actions.
When he caught the scent of her arousal, he knew he needed to stop, she was only reacting that way because of a potion. It would be deplorable to take advantage of anyone in a potion induced state, and Hermione had been through so much, he had to withdraw.
He had noted her protests and avoided her gaze until she had called out his name again. He watched her fall gently into sleep and even took a moment to push some unruly curls away from her face before leaving.
Severus knew he wanted her, but he also knew it was wrong for three main reasons. First, she was a student of his for the last seven and a half years. Second he was at least 20 years her senior, while that is not a lot by wizarding standards, it was still a significant gap considering she was still so young. And the third wrong thing about his lust for Hermione was that he was technically still in a power position over her. All of these things made him want to keep his distance from his apprentice, romantically.
At the same time all of those things that screamed at him to stay away also seemed to draw him in. He was never one to follow the conventional rules anyways.
Severus’ thoughts were interrupted by a knocking and went to answer the door, expecting a verbal lashing. When he opened the door he could sense the tension in the air; it was palpable.
“I was wondering if I could have a moment of your time?” she inquired avoiding his gaze. “There is something I would like to say to you.”
He nodded and entered their shared space. “Why don’t we have a seat?” He said gesturing to the chairs by the fire. Severus watched as she sat down and placed her fidgeting hands in her lap. She was doing her best to avoid his gaze which he found very odd. After a few minutes of awkward silence she finally started to speak.
“First off I feel I need to apologize to you.” He started to interrupt her but she held her hand up to silence him. “I have something personal and somewhat embarrassing to admit to you, I sort of have this thing for you.” She admitted as she closed her eyes. He wasn’t sure that she had actually said that until he heard her continue.
“I think that the potion combined with my feelings towards you caused me to act inappropriately and for this I apologize.” She finished with a now, all too familiar blush spread across her face.
“You have a ‘thing’… for me?” He questioned her teasingly watching her blush deepen as she fidgeted with her hands in her lap.
“I hope you don’t think I am throwing myself at you, I just wanted to explain my actions the other day.” She added still looking down at her hands. ‘She must have taken my withdrawal as rejection; typical know-it-all that ends up knowing nothing.’ Severus thought.
“Hermione.” He called trying to draw her gaze. When she still refused to look at him he leaned over and gently pushed her chin to meet his gaze. “Hermione, it is I who owe you the apology.” He stated watching her eyes go round with shock.
“Anything you did the other day was because of a potion. Your actions were not entirely your own. I should have known better and controlled myself. I fear I also let my ‘thing’ for you drive my actions, for this I should apologies to you.”
He watched her close her eyes as he began to stroke her cheek with his thumb.
“You are not under the effects of any potions now…” he trailed off as he brought his thumb to trace her lips causing her to emit a small gasp. She nodded in confirmation of his previous statement.
He watched as her long lashes fluttered open to reveal her honey colored eyes. They were the most expressive eyes he had ever seen. Beautiful, full of curiosity, life, and dare he think it, lust.
She lifted her hand to his hair again and gently ran her fingers through it once again. It felt as amazing as he remembered. He had to taste those lips; Severus’ hand on her chin snaked around behind her neck, pulling her closer to him.
When their lips met Severus was rewarded by her response. She was moving her lips against his in the most pleasurable way. He responded by placing his other hand on her hip, eventually snaking it around to rest in the arch of her back, and taking her lower lip in between his, gently sucking.
This caused the desired reaction of parting her lips, which he took full advantage of. He plunged his tongue into her mouth in such a way that left her breathless; gently caressing her tongue with his. He kept the kiss short, but full of passion.
“So sweet.” He murmured against her lips. When he pulled away he felt her hands in his hair resisting the movement, trying, to no avail, to draw him back.
Severus watched her withdraw her arms and grasp the armrests of her chair, breathing heavily.
He also took a moment to gather his senses; it was taking all of his self-control not to reattach himself to her lips. He had his taste and now he wanted more however his own personal character demanded that he stay seated. He had to show some self-control, he was not some young, twenty something hormonal wizard…
‘But she sure makes me feel that way.’ He thought as he watched her hair fall slightly in front of her face. He knew where he wanted this admittance of feelings to go but he wanted to hear Hermione’s intents before vocalizing his own.
“So how do we proceed from here?” He inquired watching her reactions carefully.
“Well, when a man and a woman admit they have feelings for one another, the next step would typically be a date…” she suggested innocently.
“A date? You wish to go on a date, with me?” he repeated never even contemplating this turn of events.
“I don’t know, is that you asking?” she teased easily.
‘Cheeky witch.’ He thought as he grabbed her hand and briefly kissed the back of it. She would learn that teasing him had consequences. “It would be my pleasure if you would accompany me to dinner on Friday night.” He was still holding her hand and he felt her grip tighten in response.
“The pleasure would be all mine.” She replied breathlessly as the clock chimed the noon hour.
