"There are five females who match the description, my lord" Walden McNair told the dark lord. "All of them ... from Gryffindor families. And your enemies, my lord" the former executioner from the Ministry said.
"Good, good" the dark lord answered. He had spent the morning brooding whilst sitting in the deep armchair in front of the fireplace. Outside, it had been raining and blowing all morning. A really foul weather had hit England and Scotland the past months. Everything was dark and bleary. London was drowning and the river Thames crept onto the streets, disrupted traffic and polluted the drinking water, washing away a terrifyingly high number of unidentified bodies. It was as if the world had been slung back to the dark ages. Crime was on the rise and there were strange omens everywhere. The heavy rain gathered in enormous pools outside the Crabbe Mansion. It cascaded in large streams down the grassy slopes, digging out canals and draining the soil of worms, nutrients and plants. The once beautiful lawn and its courtyard had been reduced to one big pool of mire. Every day, it rained. It was as if spring itself held its breath, not allowing the plants and the trees to sprout in case all went to Hell. "Rowle, Rookwood, Snape, Yaxley and Greyback" Lord Voldemort suddenly said, "you will go out and do this for me." The dark lord did not turn to see them bow and leave. All but Severus Snape. He lingered, and decided he would take a few steps forward.
"My lord?" Snape began, waiting for permission to speak.
"Dear Severus, any news?"
"In deed, my lord. I have located the whereabouts of Draco Malfoy." Severus held his breath, and he had been right in his assumption as the information seemed to wake the dark lord from his reverie. He literally jumped from the deep armchair, and his face parted in something akin to a smile. Severus fought the impulse to back away. He forced himself to will away the nausea which the smell of Voldemort gave him, and instead forcused on taking deep breaths.
"My dear Severus! Once again, you amongst all are the one who brings results. Where is this traitor?"
"My lord, Draco Malfoy resides on a farm by the Lighthouse on the Isle of Lewis." Severus swallowed and waited, keeping a straight face. Voldemort stepped into the room, sweeping across the heavy oak floorboards in a more or less ecstatic dance. "Finally, finally!"
"May I suggest that we take action at once? Getting to Malfoy is one thing, but here's the opportunity to do away with another one of your traitors as well. As it is so that mister Malfoy has married Miss Granger, Potter's companion. Perhaps she knows something about Potter's whereabouts?"
"Excellent. One thing bothers me though" Lord Voldemort continued, and the sudden change in mood set Severus on edge. What did the dark lord know? "My lord?"
"The eudaimon. He must be neutralized" the dark lord replied thoughtfully.
"Your plan?" Severus felt how his heart was beginning to pound harder in his chest. He held his breath.
"It's time I summoned Satan, the lord of Hell" Lord Voldemort replied loudly. He earned himself a gasp from the Death Eaters across the room. Uh oh, this meant trouble, Severus thought to himself. "Give the word, and I shall be by your side during the siege, my lord." Severus reassured his lord once more, bowed and left. Apparating back to Hogwarts, he stopped by private quarters to use his lavatory. Again. For the fifth time this morning. He was so unwell he wanted, no prayed, he would throw up soon. He peeled off his black coat, undid the tie and commenced to remove his white vest and cotton shirt. He needed air. He needed a fresh shirt, soaked by sweat as he was. He combed his fingers through his hair while the concerns he now harboured, fluttered away inside his head. Giving away Malfoy was a risk. He was supposed to protect them, not betray them. But what of Potter? What of dear Lily's boy? He needed time! Malfoy could look after himself, and Snape would be there to foil up any situation which could put the Malfoy family in any real harm. With luck, the place would be swarming with eudaimons. Severus put a fresh shirt on, buttoned up and took a deep sigh. He didn't want to be thinking about the swastika on his belly. He had begun to avoid the mirrors. One spiralling end of the symbol now reached up to the tip of his chestbone which united the ribs and covered the thorax. Almost his heart, Severus said to himself. Almost the heart. He thought of Dumbledore and his blackened hand, and Severus shut his eyes tight. What was this? Some sort of death sentence? No. The eudaimon had specifically said 'for protection. It's time I protected you.' And what of Lord Voldemort and his plan to summon Satan? Satan was the absolute ruler. If he was convinced and stopped the eudaimon, than Severus would be to blame for Malfoy's death. Severus shut the door behind him violently as he left his chambers. He hadn't been this worried since ... since ....!
Since that time it became evident that Lily Evans preferred James Potter over Severus Snape. Severus winced as he walked, remembering the panic and the despair which had sneaked upon him back then the way a predator sneaks upon its prey. And he had found that he had been helpless. There was no winning her back. Only his love and his respect for her had prevented him from doing something completely stupid. And resentment and anger and made him do something worse. He had joined the Death Eaters. The mistake of his life.
Remorse washed through Severus now, as he opened the mental book which contained his worst and most painful memory. Lily lying dead on the floor, her eyes wide open in terror and disbelief, as if she refused to back down beyond death, still defying Voldemort and fighting for her son. Little Harry, who had been weeping incessantly, loudly. A crying which had mingled with his Severus' own sobs. Severus had to stop and turn away from the intersection where the corridor met another which was busy with students and teachers. The memory had brought him to tears. It moved him so inexplicably that he was surprised to find himself in this state. It took a serious effort to pull himself together enough to be seen in public. And when he finally ventured out, he walked straight to his office, feeling all lost and silly.
