Hermione stared out at the strange group that had gathered just outside of the clearing that were now looking in at her. She eyed the ferret that had just told her she was beautiful suspiciously, never once had he ever given her a complement! Even after they had found out that they were to be Heads together their relationship was barely cordial at best. They no longer called one another names but there was no love lost between the duo, he was still a muggle hating ferret and she was still a stuck up know it all. She didn’t trust him she only had to work with him and at the beginning of the year they both decided that that was more than enough.
Her eyes then flowed over to the group of centaurs, she saw that they had their weapons drawn, Hermione then noticed that the Professor and Malfoy also had their wands drawn. ‘What on earth is going on?’ she thought to herself.
The wind started to whisper back to her “The wizards were sent to come find you Inanna, the twinkly eyed Headmaster tasked them with it.”
‘Well I suppose I can understand that,’ she thought, ‘but what are all these centaurs doing here, don’t they normally stay far away from wizards?’
Again the wind responded in her ear, “They are your guardians, followers of your Mother and the Stars, you can trust them. They would give their lives for you dove.”
‘Alright I suppose, though no one will be dying for my!’ she thought back, ‘But I can accept that they are charged with my safety while in the forest.’
“Yes”
‘Well that still doesn’t explain why the ferret said that.’
“Inanna you are different now, you are the Daughter. Everyone shall see your beauty now and praise the light that shines from within you.”
‘If you say so,’ shaking her head she asked the wind, ‘how is it that you can hear my thoughts?’
“Did you forget what your mother told you Inanna, we are one now; you and the earth. I will always be at your side for guidance and comfort, I am yours dove.” The wind replied as it suddenly swirled around her making her curls fly.
Hermione giggled softly as the wind tickled her skin as it whirled around her. ‘Ok, what shall I call you then?’ she asked after the breeze had died down.
“Your mother calls me Ventus.”
‘Then so shall I, now Ventus what can you tell me about the centaurs?’ Hermione wondered as she looked at the largest of the group who had a large curved sword in his hand.
“That is Ahasuerus, the Great Warrior of the herd. Son of Agapitus the herd’s leader, the smaller golden warrior to his right is his younger brother Aurelius. When you came into your gifts their connection to you was awoken and they followed your pull of life to come and protect you while you’re here. They do not trust the wizard’s and before you awoke they were about to defend you I believe.” Ventus replied sounding as if he thought it was all rather funny while she started to stand up.
Hermione cocked her head to stare at the still silent group before her. Her eyes traveling from the centaurs to the Professor whose mask of indifference was slightly cracked into one of curiosity, as he stared back at her suddenly realizing he had been caught and the hard look fell back into place.
“The dark one is a servant to the snake lord, Ahasuerus doesn’t trust him.” Ventus said to Hermione as she continued to look on.
‘And what do you think, is he not to be trusted?’ Hermione thought.
“He is a dark one Daughter, but in his heart there is light, he is a spy. Ahasuerus is right, he does kneel before the snake lord, but he doesn’t believe and when he returns to the castle I hear him up in the Headmaster’s chambers telling him all that went on while he was away. After all voices are carried on the wind.” Ventus finished.
Hermione smiled at the last part, ‘So Snape is a spy for the Order! Harry will find that piece of information very interesting. But I still don’t trust them!’ she thought fiercely.
“Do not forget what your Mother told you Inanna,” the wind replied to her. It was then that her Mother’s voice rung out in her mind, words she had spoken earlier that night.
“There are those who are destined to follow the two of you through this journey to help protect and comfort you. Two who you do not yet trust, and two who are like family now, you will find them dove and they will find you and you will share your gifts with them to help in the fight.”
‘Does my Mother mean that these are the two that I do not yet trust? How can she be right in that, they are Slytherins! They are never to be trusted!’ she argued to Ventus.
“Do not be so blinded by the labels of wizards! You are a Daughter of Demeter, you are from the earth and you can see what truly lies when in their hearts; all you must do is see. Now look!” Ventus said forcefully and brushed against her cheek.
Hermione did as she was told and truly looked at the potions master. As she had seen in the small blue flowers before she was able to see the bright pulse of amber life that flowed within him. She looked into his heart and found a sadness that lingered there, and a longing for change, but there was no deceit. No distrust, Severus Snape was an honest man and she decided that Ventus was right; she would trust him, though that didn’t mean she would like him.
‘You are right Ventus, I see it now, he has an honest heart and I will trust him. But Malfoy, that little ferret he’s another thing entirely!’ Hermione thought as her amber eyes flashed over to Malfoy’s grey eyes clashing against her own. He had stopped greasing his hair flat against his head so it now hung loosely around his eyes. Her eyes continued there appraisal of him flowing down his face, he had a hard jaw line that he seemed to of finally grown into along with a sharp nose and full pink lips. He had also had a growth spurt over the summer and now towered over her five foot and five inch curvy frame at a neck craning six feet; though she noticed he was still shorter then Professor Snape who must’ve been at least three inches taller than him.
Her eyes continued over his broad shoulders following his amber life line to his chest where she looked deep into his heart. She saw confliction there, a longing for a hope of something different, but also a desire to please. His heart was conflicted so Hermione wasn’t sure what to think. Her eyes traveled back up to his that held a very well concealed confusion, to anyone else he would look fierce and indifferent but not to Hermione she could see through all of that now. After realizing this she looked back over to the Professor and saw pure curiosity behind the irritated face he wore.
Deciding that the her jury was still out on Malfoy she decided that it was time to head back up to the castle, the sky was starting to lighten with the coming of the dawn.
“Ahasuerus,” Hermione spoke finally to the group as she began to make her way over to them, “I understand the concerns you have about the wizards. But do not worry they will do no harm to me and have also been charged with returning me safely. My safety,” she said softly as she walked over to the eight foot tall warrior pressing her hand to the arm that held his sword. She softly ran her small hand up his muscled forearm enjoying the feeling of his life vibrating up through her finger tips into her core.
“Something you have in common I believe.” She finished has her hand dropped from him. “I apologize that you were dragged from your beds,” looking over to the Professor and the Head Boy, “Lets head back up to the castle gentlemen.” She said as she looked back up at Ahasuerus feeling his tension mount at her words.
“Ahasuerus will you and your herd brothers accompany us to the edge of the forest?” she asked silkily up to him.
“Of course Inanna, follow us we shall see you back safely.” He replied as he nodded to the herd as they began to move forward.
Hermione looked over at her irritated professor whom seemed to know to remain silent lest he offend the centaurs who already didn’t like him again. He sneered at her and started to follow them back towards the castle; she looked at Malfoy after Snape had walked off and saw a blank mask. He walked over to her not saying anything simply nodding his head in the direction of the castle and followed after her as she started to walk herself. Ahasuerus stayed close to Hermione’s side through the silent trek back up to the castle occasionally shooting an untrusting glare to the blonde that stood next to her.
“You’re barefoot.” Draco suddenly stated softly as he motioned with his large hand down to her feet.
“Yes I am.” Hermione simply replied. “Well what happened to them? Your shoes I mean?” he said in a curious tone.
“I guess I’ve always just preferred to not wear them, I never do while I’m outside unless I have to. And my Father always told me that ‘Granger woman shouldn’t be seen running around barefoot inside, it was very unbecoming behavior for a young lady’ Hermione said in a deep tone imitating her father wondering to herself why she had just told him that.
She shook her head clear of her thoughts and noticed they had reached the tree line, “Inanna you must come talk to my Father,” Ahasuerus said to her as she turned to him “there is much I’m sure he will need to discuss with you.” Her hand raised and rested against his chest sighing as his life pulse flowed through her, she noticed he seemed very relaxed as well. He reached out and brushed a curl from her face.
“We will feel you when you come into the forest, and I will be at your side to guide you through.” his deep voice rumbling through his chest down her arm and into her own. Her hand feel from the horseman and he and his herd brothers fell back into the darkness of the forest. She turned back to the Professor and Draco where the stood just beyond the trees waiting for her to emerge. She walked out to them and they continued on up to the castle, remaining silent until they reached the stone steps that lead up to the large oak doors.
“Miss Granger,” Snape said as he turned to her in a flourish of black robes, “I don’t know what has happened, and at the moment I am simply too tired to take the time to worry about it. But tomorrow, rest assured that we will be having breakfast in your quarters along with the Headmaster and you will explain what has transpired this night. Starting with why I was almost attacked by a group of centaurs and why your hair now seems to be dark gold! But for right now you will go up to your dorm and will not leave until I or the Headmaster has allowed it! Do you understand?!” As Snape finished his tirade Hermione was worried he might bust something the way the vain in his neck was popping out.
She walked over to him and brought her hand up to his robe covered arm making the Professor flinch slightly until he began to feel a calming vibration flow through him from where her hand rested.
“Yes Professor Snape,”she said softly as she stepped up onto the stone step immediately missing the connection with the earth. “Straight to bed.” She finished as she continued to make her way into the castle the Head Boy following behind her leaving a perplexed looking Snape in front of the school.
They walked through the stone corridors in silence finally coming to the mermaid portrait that concealed their dorm; she was still soundly slumbering when they tapped on her frame. She looked up and smiled at Hermione as she said the password nodding silently as it swung open to allow them entrance.
They walked in and Hermione started moving towards the stairs that lead to her room when Draco lightly grabbed her arm, both sighing softly at the feeling of their life lights combining. Hermione pulled away from him not know what to make of the feeling that just shot through her at his touch.
Draco opened his mouth looking like he wanted to say something and then suddenly his mask was firmly back in place and said simply to her “Night Granger,” turning from her walking up to his door and into his room.
“Goodnight Malfoy,” Hermione said lightly as she looked on with a curious stare. Continuing on her way up to her room she opened her door sighing when her eyes rested on her soft bed that stood empty inside. She let the white dress she had worn fall from her body enjoying the cool air against her naked flesh. Walking over to her bed she climbed into it and laid her head softly against her pillow. Thinking about what she was going to tell the Headmaster and Professor Snape tomorrow at breakfast, which was only a few hours away at that point, she fell back into the land of dreams. Dreams filled with ocean grey eyes..
